Work Text:

Jay could hardly believe his own eyes.

They were wide, glossed over, and his mouth opened slightly, tears swimming at the corners.

Nya--his beloved Nya, his Yang--stared back at him. Only it wasn't his Nya. It wasn't her eyes, it wasn't her face. Yes, she was gorgeous. Of course he always believed that, and he would tell her over and over again. But it was glowing, and though she wore a gentle smile, she did not know him. He had already known this and thought he was prepared, he had gone out to go look for her because of this. But the way she looked at him hurt. He could feel his heart shattering again.

A sob left Jay's throat; he couldn't hold back the tears any longer. Slowly, he melted to his knees, unable to keep her gaze. His head bowed before her as the tears fell to the watery floor underneath him. He was so tired. Of the pain. Of the tears. He wanted her back, wanted it to go away.

"My child," She spoke, but it wasn't a voice he recognized. A hand reached down and lifted his chin gently so that he was looking at her again. She had her head tilted, a concerned frown on her face. "Why do you cry?"

The Master of Lightning's bottom lip trembled. He simply shook his head, unable to find words through the lump of his throat, and he lifted a hand to grip at her arm. He would have relished her touch if it wasn't wet, cold, and not solid.

Nya-- Nyad --smiled sympathetically. She knelt down to his height and pressed her forehead against his with a small hum, closing her eyes. All Jay could do was follow her lead.

"There there. It will be alright." Said the spirit that took his beloved away.

He did not come all this way to break down. He did not come here to be pitied, to be held like he was falling apart. But he allowed himself to be, once again sobbing away his sorrows until there was nothing left for him to cry. And when he had, when his throat was sore and his eyes were heavy, all he could do was speak a simple sentence.

"We never seem to have enough time.." He whispered hoarsely.
