Chapter Text
That morning when Atsumu woke up, he just knew deep in his gut told him that something was going to go wrong today. He just knew it, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. He was jostled out of his thoughts when he felt the babies kicking his belly. His frame shuddered in pain. He winced and whimpered in pain, leaning back against the headboard.
His entire body hurt. He sat up on the bed in a daze, the right side of the bed empty and cold. Atsumu and Kiyoomi were currently staying at their apartment in Tokyo. They were once again preparing for the Olympics. Kiyoomi hadn’t wanted Atsumu to stay by himself in Osaka and he was trying to spite Osamu by not letting the now raven haired male to go back to Hyogo.
Atsumu very nearly divorced and disowned his husband and brother at that time. At the time, it wasn’t funny but thinking about it now, it was funny as hell, especially when the two of them panicked.
*~Flashbacku~*
“WHAT IN THE HELL DO YOU MEAN YOU’RE TAKING HIM TO TOKYO?!?!!”
Osamu had slammed his hand onto the table that the family was sitting at. Atsumu groaned in embarrassment and hid his face in his hands. Sunarin, the jackass, was laughing his ass off and recording the whole thing. One peak at Motoya showed that he had his phone out as well. The eyebrow jerk. Their parents were shaking their heads at the pair. The Miya parents shared a look knowing that their youngest was being an overprotective brat. The Sakusa parents became accustomed to the fight between the two men and continued eating their meal. Kiyoomi’s older siblings, Haruto and Sasaki, snickered at their younger brother being lectured to hell and back by his brother-in-law.
Atsumu sighed heavily and leaned back into his chair and rubbed at his 7 month swell. He hissed when the baby kicked him hard and it caused everyone at the table to look at him in worry. Kiyoomi and Osamu were by his side and waving their arms like a couple of mad people, earning them even more looks. Atsumu growled and slapped Osamu and Kiyoomi on the heads and called the waiter for their check before they got kicked out of the restaurant for causing a disturbance.
When they got back to the hotel room of the Miya parents, Kiyoomi and Osamu had continued their match from the restaurant. Atsumu was sat on the plush chair in the room with Haruto and Motoya massaging his feet, while he was massaging his temples.
(They asked, not him….)
“I’m telling you that he should come back with us!!! He needs some country air and Tokyo has too much pollution in the air and it’ll be bad for the baby.”
Kiyoomi growled and sighed in frustration.
“But you work and we both know Tsumu wouldn’t want to go back, so he wouldn’t feel like a burden to your parents.”
Osamu felt an eyebrow twitch and crossed his arms.
“Now, we both know that Mom and Dad are retired and therefore, would love to have their oldest baby in the house to baby again.”
“And what the hell makes you think that he wouldn’t want to be by me, huh?”
“And when are you going to have time for Tsumu? You, Rin, Moto have to be at the facility training all day and maybe late into the night, who the hell knows?”
The more he listened to them, the more Atsumu felt the tears building behind his closed eyelids. Motoya and Haruto looked at the pregnant male in worry. Many a times, Atsumu has phoned one of them in the middle of the night in tears when he felt like he couldn’t talk to Kiyoomi. Both males knew of his insecurities. Of how he felt inadequate to stand by Kiyoomi’s side despite the fact that the Sakusa parents approved of him. They knew stuff that Osamu didn’t know of.
Motoya and Haruto slowly backed away when they saw Atsumu gripping at the arms of the chair. Without warning, Atsumu stood up and faced the arguing males.
“ENOUGH!!!! I DON’T NEED TWO IDIOTS TELLING ME WHAT I CAN AND CAN’T DO!!! I AM MY OWN PERSON AND I GET TO DECIDED WHO AND WHERE I STAY WITH!!!”
Without thinking, Atsumu stormed out of the hotel room ignoring the calls of his family, and patting his pocket to make sure he had his wallet, nodded and hailed a taxi. Jumping in, he gave the driver the address of a friend’s apartment on the other side of Tokyo. Getting out of the taxi and giving the man a hefty tip, he thanked him and made his way into the building, going to the fifth floor and knocking on the door.
“Hai~~”
The high pitched voice from the inside brought a small smile on his face. The door opened to reveal the shocked face of the athletic trainer’s mate’s face.
“Tsumubabe?”
“K-kawabae”
The tears gathered in Atsumu’s face and slowly rolled down his face in front of his friend. The Setter panicked a bit and brought his pregnant friend into his embrace. The Setter gently shushed his friend and guided him into the apartment.
Iwaizumi came from the bedroom to see who came knocking at their door this late at night. He was shocked when he saw Atsumu crying into his mate’s embrace. He sighed in sympathy and went over to sit on the other side of the pregnant male. The two of them tried to comfort the crying male. After Atsumu had calmed down a bit, he sat in silence as his two friends cuddled him. The question lingered in the air, but none of the other males knew how to address the issue.
“Tsumubabe, did something happen with Kiyo-chan and Samu?”
The raven’s bottom lip wobbled and Oikawa quickly went to the fridge and grabbed the jar of umeboshi and gave it to Atsumu. The younger male opened the jar and shoved one into his mouth.
“It’s because of them that I’m here.”
The husbands looked at each other in question and waited for the Setter to continue.
“Kiyoomi and Samu just kept arguing with each other, saying how I should spend the Olympic training period with each other and they just kept talking about what was best for me like I wasn’t there.”
The pregnant Setter inhaled a breath and whimpered a bit as he thought about the fight.
“A-and I was just getting so fucking frustrated and it felt like they were attacking my insecurities and it just fucking sucked. they were even arguing in the restaurant and Samu was getting annoyed and it attracted the looks of other people and ughhh. And after we got back to the hotel where my parents were staying at, they got more aggressive with each other. So, I yelled at them and came straight here.”
The two looked at the pregnant male in concern. Other than the tears, they didn’t see any injuries on the ex-blonde. They sighed in relief. Kiyoomi and Osamu would behead them if anything happened to their precious Tsumu. The two looked at each other before turning their attention back to their friend.
“Tsumu, have you told either of them about your insecurities?”
Atsumu grabbed the fluffy alien plushie and hugged it to his chest.
“No, I’ve only told ‘Toya and Haru-nii. I feel like I’d just burden Omi with this and I reallllly don’t want to get teased by Samu for it.”
Tooru and Hajime’s jaws dropped. Tsumu couldn’t go to Kiyoomi cause he felt like a burden??? And he couldn’t go to Osamu for fear of the younger twin to make fun of him??????? Well, shit…. Tooru looked up at the ceiling and sucked some oxygen into his lungs. It took everything in his willpower to not go across Tokyo to give those two a piece of his mind.
The two comforted the raven haired male and allowed him to sleep in the guest room with the fluffy pillows and blankets. Tooru opened his phone and saw Osamu and Kiyoomi (and everybody else!!!) spamming the group chat about Atsumu. He huffed at them all and wrote a simple message.
Iwaizumi Tooru: Tsumu babe is with Hajime and I. You need to think about your actions tonight and get him in the morning. For now, leave him alone.
He turned off his phone and flew it onto the couch next to his husband.
“The GC?”
“Yep~”
“Alright…”
Needless to say, Osamu and Kiyoomi received a tongue lashing from Tooru as Atsumu was munching on Hajime’s special pancakes. The males at the table ignored the three males in the living room and ate while having a conversation about volleyball and the upcoming season. At the end of the tongue lashing, the two apologized profusely while Atsumu continued to eat his pancakes. Atsumu then placed down his fork and turned towards the two, where they received tongue lashing part 2.
From that day on, the two vowed to not fight in front of Atsumu and they promised to make an effort to get along better with each other. Atsumu made the decision that he would stay with Kiyoomi in Tokyo and that the apartment was big enough to have the family rotate. The Sakusa’s even offered their mansion (they rich rich ok???) and all parts of the family were finally content and satisfied with the compromise.
*~End Flashbacku~*
Atsumu chuckled softly as he rubbed at his nine month swell. Kiyoomi had left for Olympic training and Tooru would surely be with his team somewhere in the country. He sighed and slowly slid off of the bed. He winced at the sharp pain and checked the his watch.
9:45am
Osamu would be at the apartment at 10. He slowly shuffled his way to the bathroom and started on his morning routine. He went over to the laundry hamper and grabbed Kiyoomi’s pajamas from last night.
(A/N: I know that it’s unsanitary and disgusting but it has Omi’s scent and Atsumu misses him >:( so yeah….)
He put on the sweatshirt and changed into a different pair of sweats and shuffled out of the room, just in time to walk towards the door when the bell rang. He opened it and immediately saw the concerned face of his twin.
“Tsumu, ya alright? Yer lookin’ a little pale there.”
Atsumu leaned against the doorframe and huffed out a breath. Osamu quickly went towards his brother and led the pregnant male into the house. After sitting the male on the couch, Atsumu huffed out a breath. Osamu looked at his brother in concern and lifted up the bag in his hand.
“Ya hungry, Tsumu?”
///
By lunchtime, Atsumu didn’t know if he wanted to sleep or die. The pain from the morning increased and Osamu became increasingly fidgety. Atsumu hissed and leaned on one side of couch and huffed.
“S-samu…”
Osamu turned towards his brother and looked at him.
“S-something doesn’t fe-feel right…hng”
Osamu felt his jaw drop and he jumped up from his seat and ran into the nursery to grab the hospital bag. He ran back in and grabbed Tsumu’s key, picked his brother up and ran out of the apartment. He ran down towards his car and places his brother into the passenger seat, buckling him and tucking a blanket (that he always kept for Suna and Atsumu cause they got cold too fast). He got into the driver’s seat and sped off towards the hospital.
Once his brother was settled into his room and asleep, he went out to try and get ahold of his brother-in-law. After 6 different calls, the younger twin decided to call his fiancé, who was constantly on his phone, only for him to not answer either. He called Tooru in hopes of the brunette answering, and to his luck, he did.
After relaying the situation to the brunette, Osamu got the reassurance that Tooru will try to get a hold of Hajime, who will have Kiyoomi call him back. Osamu sighed in relief and went back to the room. He stopped in his track when he saw the paleness in his brother’s complexion. He looked out the room and saw the nurse passing by. The nurse went in to check on Tsumu, after seeing Samu’s panicked expression, and stopped when she saw the paleness in his face. She rang the button for the doctor and they had asked Osamu to wait outside.
The growing anxiety for his older brother steadily grew and he was pacing the floors. Osamu heard a multitude of footsteps heading in his direction and wondered what was going on. He turned around and saw the entire Japanese Team hunched over and breathing heavily. Osamu stared at them and pinched his arm to see if he was dreaming. He winced when he felt the pain and watched as they all got into some semblance of calm. Kiyoomi sat up and the two males stared at each other conveying their thoughts to each other and hoped that they were both dreaming.
“How is he?”
Samu groaned and ran a hand down his face, shaking his head.
“They just kicked me out of the room cause he was really pale.”
Rintaro went over to his husband and guided the male to sit on the chair.
“What happened?”
Osamu inhaled and sighed deeply, shaking his head.
“I don’t know. Tsumu was on the couch watching Tsurune (A/N: I fucking love that show 😭) and then he was just like, something didn’t feel right. So, I took him here.”
Osamu slumped over his seat and placed his elbows on his knees, head in his hands.
“W-what if…”
“NO!!!”
Rintaro grabbed onto his husband’s face and made him face him, staring sternly into the gray eyes.
“No, do NOT think about such things. We need to stay positive for Atsumu. If we think negative thoughts, then something bad could happen to him. We-we can’t think like this….”
Rin wanted to stay strong, but the thought of losing his brother-in-law/ best friend was a lot. He shook his head. He needed to take his own advice. His husband, in-laws, and friends needed something else to focus on. He whipped out his phone and started scrolling through it.
“You guys wanna see a video of Samu and Tsumu crying in our third year after our final match?”
Samu whipped his head up from Rin’s shoulder, a scandalous look on his face.
“Ya swore ya wouldn’t show that ta ‘nyone!!!!”
Everyone howled in laughter and gathered around the two. Aran and Suna keeping an arm around Samu to keep him from escaping. A few coos came from the group and Samu’s heavy Kansai accent made an appearance as cursed out his husband.
They didn’t notice the nurse coming down the hallway towards them, a concerned look on her face.
“Excuse me? I’m here for Sakusa Kiyoomi and Miya Osamu?”
The two males looked at each other, biting their lips nervously as they followed the nurse.
///
Atsumu knows something bad is going to happen. There’s a deep instinctual feeling that all people get, at least once in their lives. Honestly, if he wasn’t so tired, he’d deck the doctor in the face for yelling at him to ‘stay awake’.
Samu and Omi are looking at him with concern. He looked at his baby brother and chuckled inwardly to himself.
“S-samu, yer lookin like a real dummy right now. Don’t you worry nothins happenin to me, ya scrub.”
The laboring male didn’t know if he was saying it to himself, his brother, or his husband. He knows that somethings gonna happen. And it’ll happen soon. He just needs to reassure himself and Kiyoomi that the younger male and their son’s will be alright.
“O-Omi”
Kiyoomi looked down at his beloved. The unshed tears clinging on for dear life.
“Omi, need ya ta promise me somethin.”
Kiyoomi visibly swallowed the lump in his throat.
“What is it, honey?”
“Need ya ta promise me that if anything happens that you won’t shut yourself in.”
Ice cold fear ran through the taller raven’s veins. What was Atsumu saying? Of course he was going to survive, he had too. Kiyoomi didn’t know if he could do this by himself. He told himself that Tsumu would be the one for him. Now the dumb bee was saying something like this? No, he needed Tsumu to be with him. He can’t—
“Tsumu, honey, what’re you talking about? Of course, you’re gonna make it. You’re gonna be a good mother and scold the child and me when we fight over your love, affection, and attention. You—“
Atsumu let out a groan of pain as he felt the baby moving down, getting closer to entering the world. Kiyoomi stopped mid sentence and paid attention to his love. He was confused. He didn’t know why Tsumu was saying these things. A glance at Osamu told him that the younger twin was just as nervous.
///
Twenty minutes later at 9:45am, on the 28th day of the fifth month (A/N: is my birthday :D), their first son Natsume was born. At 10am, their second born, Akihito made a screaming entrance. Osamu and Kiyoomi held a twin each and felt the tears gathering in their eyes. The love that their my felt for their sons/nephews was so overwhelming, that they were wholeheartedly unprepared for what happened next.
“HE’S FLATLINING!!!!”
Osamu and Kiyoomi whipped their heads around and saw Atsumu as pale as the sheets, the heart monitor beeping loudly and everyone scrambling about in the room. The nurses came and spoke to them, but neither could hear a single word. The nurses took the babies from them and they were lead back to the VIP waiting room and saw the rest of their friends and family waiting for them.
The next thing you know, Kiyoomi could no longer hold himself up and collapsed onto the hard ground. Motoya, Haruto, and Sasaki quickly made their way to the young father. Rintaro grabbed ahold of his husband and quickly sat him on the nearest chair before the same thing happened to him.
“Hey you two, what in the world happened in there?”
The others looked at the two in anticipation.
“He-“
Kiyoomi started, but couldn’t bring himself to finish his two word sentence. He was afraid of it being a real thing. He wanted to pretend that Atsumu was still complaining, crying, and cursing him out trying to push the twins out. The tears fell from his eyes as he faced the reality that he could very well lose Atsumu and he would become a single parent to their children. He leaned over into the person closest to him (Komori) and started sobbing into his shoulder. Komori could only blink in shock and rub at his sobbing cousin’s back.
Rintaro did the same for his husband as the younger twin stared at the tiled floor.
“He flatlined.”
Everyone’s head whipped around to look at Osamu.
“He- Natsume and Akihito were perfectly born and the nurse just screamed that he flatlined and Atsumu was...he was just so damn pale. He-he kept talking and telling Omi that he needed to be strong enough to take care of the kids if something happened. And oh god...DID HE KNOW??? Did...did he-“
The younger twin cut himself off and turned to bury his head into the middle blocker’s shoulder. The waiting room was quiet, save for the crying of the two men. The people in the room tried to process the words of the twin and shivered. This could be the very last time that anyone would see the sunshine incarnate.
No one liked it.
///
A couple of hours later, a nurse came by and saw the two distressed men sleeping peacefully, surrounded by friends and family. The nurse was reluctant to wake them up, but she needed to relay the news. She knocked on the door and a lot of them jumped up and looked around.
The nurse giggled, bringing the attention to herself. The current and former volleyball players coughed in embarrassment and slowly sat on the chairs again.
“You’re here for Sakusa Atsumu-san?”
They looked at the nurse with wide frantic eyes and nodded their eyes.
“Ok. Well, let me start off by saying my name is Takahashi Reina. I was one of the nurses present during the delivery of the twins.”
They nodded.
“As you know, Sakusa-san ended up flatlining in the delivery room. We were able to bring him back. The cause of it was mostly due to blood loss and shock. There were also traces of bleeding in his womb and it wasn’t known until the doctor went in to repair the cause of the blood loss.”
The people in the waiting room nodded their heads, feeling relief that the doctor caught the problem and fixed it.
“I’m happy to say that Sakusa-san will make a full recovery, but there are a couple of things that need to be done once he’s discharged. First, he’s going to need a lot of bedrest. This situation put a tremendous burden on his body, so he needs some sufficient time to recover from this ordeal. He needs to eat food that will give him nutrients, but I suggest a liquid diet for the first week.”
(A/N: the author has not been pregnant/ nor is she dating anyone for that matter…. #LonelyandSad26yo)
The others nodded and let the silence wash over them. The nurse looked at them and took out her pager. She brightened up and looked at them.
“If you want to see him, you may. I recommend you all to be quiet though, since he’s still resting. Priority will be given to the family first and everyone else may visit when they come back.”
"YES!!!!!"
