In Your Arms (Is the Safest Place)

Summary:

Suga resigns himself to his fate – a limbo in intimacy with his best friend. On one side, losing a source of comfort and trust in their friendship, and on the other, something completely unknown, and for that reason, something completely terrifying.

A gift for Plum (@whippysan) for the 2021 DaiSuga Exchange!

Plum's prompt list had me weak at the knees (hello physical touch as a love language?) so this piece kind of took on a life of its own. I really hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

Suga remembers clearly what thought went through his head the first time he met Daichi: Arms. Followed almost immediately by: What?? A lot has changed since that first day, including Daichi bulking up considerably, but Suga has not noticed this, because that would be a really strange thing for him to notice about his best friend who is also a guy. Suga is one hundred percent attracted to girls. He likes their hair and also... Well, the details don’t really matter, just that Suga definitely likes girls.

He certainly does not pay attention to the way Daichi’s thighs flex when he dips into a low squat for a receive, or how his back looks when he’s serving, and he especially does not pay attention to Daichi’s arms.

And Suga thinks he’s doing an excellent job of not paying attention, given how much time he and Daichi spend together. Being in both the same club and the same class had turned them into fast friends in their first year as they bonded over receive forms and chemistry notes. Daichi was one of the first friends he’d made who could take Suga’s cheeky banter and even send it right back at him. Of course, Suga also loved spending time with Asahi, but he and Daichi seemed to really get each other on a different level.

Now, two years later at the start of their third year, Suga can’t imagine trying to make it through high school without Daichi. They’ve become each other’s confidants in all things from silly volleyball club drama and nightmare teachers to even more serious topics, like when Daichi had come to him first for comfort after his grandmother passed away during the winter of their second year.

They’d even talked about their ideal future partners together. It had been after a long day of practice during Golden Week, but Daichi and Suga were only second years and still full of energy. Unable to sleep, they’d snuck out of their futons to a vacant classroom further down the hallway where they’d stayed up way too late trying to conceal their laughter and whispering embarrassing secrets to each other.

Daichi had come out to him as bisexual that evening as they sat in the sliver of moonlight passing through the classroom window. It was during a moment of brief respite from their silly confessions, the quiet between them making space for something more serious, and the weight of Daichi’s words caused a palpable shift in the mood of the room.

Even with the dim lighting, Suga had been able to see the vulnerability on Daichi’s face as he’d spoken, but there was still such strength there. Daichi was nervous, but he wasn’t afraid. To this day, Suga still remembers feeling awe at Daichi’s composure through it all.

And so Suga had smiled softly, made some joke about ‘leave it to Daichi to overachieve’, and that the girls at their school had better watch out – they had some strong competition – and that was that.

Until Daichi had asked Suga about his ideal future partner. Suga had spluttered his way through some list of traits he thought were attractive in a woman: dark hair, a kind smile, a good leader, strong thighs – wait. He’s pretty sure he didn’t say that last one out loud.

The truth is that Suga finds himself spending more time thinking about Daichi’s thighs than he does about any girl he’s met. But that’s just because they’re on a team together, Suga sees them every day, and he does his best not to dwell on any of the thoughts that might arise in his brain when he feels Daichi’s hand on his lower back as he guides him into the club room or on his shoulder as he congratulates him on a practice match well played.

Although Daichi certainly makes it difficult for him to maintain his resolve. He knows that some people tend to be more… physical in their affections, but Daichi seems to be topping the charts when it comes to finding reasons to put his hands on Suga. And Suga is uncomfortably comfortable with it.

Suga supposes he should be used to it by now, the touches and gentle looks. Daichi’s been doing it since their second year at least. And yet here he is, trying to focus on an upcoming game and all he can think about is the feeling of Daichi’s hands on his own.

Like many things in life, this problem had arisen partially as a result of Suga’s own stupidity. He’d wanted to try wrapping his fingers in tape for a game but was struggling with the mechanics of it when Daichi had offered to help. The next thing he knew, Daichi was delicately wrapping tape around each of Suga’s thin fingers, giving special attention to his knuckles to avoid pinching or pulling on his skin. Even after all that, he’d found himself annoyed by the feeling of the tape throughout the entire game, but when Daichi offered to wrap his fingers before their next game unprompted, Suga’s mouth had said yes before his brain could catch up.

To this day, he hasn’t been able to figure out if the tingling he feels in the tips of his fingers when Daichi is done is due to some side effect of the wrapping, or from being paid such gentle attention for so long.

The whole ordeal has become somewhat of a pre-game ritual at this point: Daichi silently reaching out, waiting patiently for Suga to place a hand in his warm palm. They use the time to talk strategy, straddling the bench face to face with the roll of tape and their hands between them.

“I was thinking we should have Kageyama set to Tanaka more than usual.” Daichi is saying, and Suga has to make a concerted effort to focus on the words coming out of his mouth, rather than the fact that Daichi has finished wrapping his fingers and is now absentmindedly warming up his palms.

“Hmm?” Suga responds intelligently, tearing his eyes away from where their hands meet to look at Daichi as he speaks.

“He’s really been nailing his straight shots lately, and I think it could be a good way to get past their block.”

Before Suga can try to form a response more becoming of a vice captain, Kageyama wanders up to them, looking about as awkward as usual.

“Daichi-san,” He starts. “I was thinking we could try the new synchronized attack-”

“Kageyama!” Hinata hisses from behind him before he can finish the sentence. “Don’t interrupt them, they’re having boyfriend time.” He whisper-shouts, making a fruitless attempt to pull Kageyama away from the bench.

“I know, but this is important,” Kageyama returns angrily, just in time for Suga to actually process what’s been said.

“What?” He deadpans.

At the same time Daichi chuckles awkwardly. “Oh uh, we’re not dating. I’m not sure what gave you that idea.”

“You’re not?!” Hinata exclaims as he jumps out from behind Kageyama, having given up on trying to drag him away from the conversation. “But you guys are always touching and holding hands! And you’re always together!”

“And Daichi-san is bi.” Kageyama adds helpfully.

Suga feels like they must be speaking another language because he can’t seem to process this conversation. They thought we were dating? They thought Daichi and I were in a relationship? He thinks he should probably say something, but he can’t for the life of him get past the implication that he could be dating his best friend.

Thankfully (and unsurprisingly), Daichi seems to have a much better handle on the situation. “No, we’re just really close, that’s all.” He says, and there’s something about the way he says that’s all that Suga might have paid more attention to if he wasn’t already using up all his brain’s bandwidth on they thought we were dating.

“And also, I’m straight!” Suga finally blurts out, and he realizes that it’s perhaps more of a reminder to himself than to anyone in the conversation.

“Huh.” Hinata says, but it’s partially cut off by the sound of the ref blowing the whistle, signaling the start of their warm-up time. Suga jumps up right away, wanting to move on from this conversation as quickly as possible.

“C’mon Hinata,” he says resting a guiding hand on his shoulder as he passes. “Let’s go warm up your receives."

As he makes his way towards the court, he spares a single glance back at Daichi, who he expects to see following him. Instead, Daichi is still sitting on the bench, eyes downcast and cheeks tinted ever so slightly pink.

A week later, Daichi is spending the night at Suga’s on a rare evening where he doesn’t have to take care of his siblings which means Suga is “treating” him to a night of no stress. In other words, Suga nearly burnt dinner, burnt Daichi’s mouth with how spicy he’d made it, and then laughed the entire time Daichi was choking back milk with a deep scowl on his face.

As a peace offering, Suga let Daichi pick their plans for the rest of the evening, so now they’re sitting on the couch watching the next installment in the action series they’ve been marathoning for the past few weeks. At the current moment, Suga is painfully aware of the fact that Daichi’s arm, Daichi’s bicep , is draped over the back of the couch behind his shoulders.

And of course, because the only thing he really doesn’t want to think about is Daichi’s arm behind him, it’s the only thing in his head. Suga swears he can feel some sort of electromagnetic force field radiating out of Daichi’s arm and prickling the back of his neck. It’s like an itch, but instead of wanting to scratch it, he wants to close the space, wants Daichi to shift his arm from the couch to Suga’s shoulders.

But that’s a strange thing to wish for, so Suga continues to stare at the explosions on the screen in front of him, eyes stuck on a single spot without really taking anything in, while he thinks hard about not thinking about Daichi and his stupid arm.

Instead, his mind wanders to his recent discovery that the first-years thought they were dating. At first, it had seemed ridiculous to Suga that anyone could think that, but in the time since, he keeps finding himself in compromising positions such as this one, and suddenly it doesn’t seem so far-fetched. But what does that mean? Suga doesn’t really want people thinking he and Daichi are together when they’re definitely not, but he also can’t imagine a world where their friendship is any different, where Daichi doesn’t extend physical affection like it’s second nature.

So, he resigns himself to his fate – a limbo in intimacy with his best friend. On one side, losing a source of comfort and trust in their friendship, and on the other, something completely unknown, and for that reason, something completely terrifying.

Eventually, Suga’s thoughts begin to wear themselves out, and his eyes start to droop from fatigue. He risks a glance to his left to see that Daichi has already fallen asleep, head resting against the back of the couch. Suga finally allows himself the comfort of dropping his head back onto Daichi’s arm before falling asleep as well.

It must be hours later when he wakes because they’ve both shifted considerably, and Suga is- well, he’s practically laying on top of Daichi now. He risks a glance up to see that Daichi is still fast asleep, his mouth just slightly agape.

For a moment, Suga is too caught up in the sight of Daichi’s eyelashes fluttering gently as he dreams to even react to their precarious position. His soft brown hair looks so fluffy, and Suga must still be half-asleep, because he finds himself reaching a hand out to run his fingers through it. It’s exactly as soft as he’d imagined.

But then, the sane part of his brain wakes up and provides some much needed reason. He and Daichi have always been more comfortable with physical contact than most people but this ? Surely, this is too intimate. This is a step out of limbo and into that unknown place, and Suga doesn’t want to be here.

Before he can retract his hand, Daichi shifts slightly, his face scrunching up as though he’s about to wake up. Suga’s heart leaps into his throat right as he jumps off Daichi, and off the couch entirely.

That of course, wakes Daichi fully. Suga stands frozen over the couch as Daichi groggily lifts his head, looking around to gather his bearings before resting his gaze on Suga.

The adrenaline of the close call fills Suga’s veins with panic and embarrassment. He has no idea what he was thinking just moments ago, but his head is completely clear now, and it’s telling him he needs to leave.

“I uh, have to go home.” Suga splutters out.

“What? I thought you were sleeping over.” Confusion is written clear across Daichi’s half-asleep expression.

“My mom called.” Suga racks his brain for some sort of excuse as he shoves his shoes and jacket on. “She needs me to, uh, do laundry.” Certainly not his best work, but it would have to do.

“Umm, okay.” Daichi responds, having sat up fully on the couch by now, and Suga can tell he’s skeptical but he’s already almost half-way out the door. “Get home safe!” He calls after Suga’s retreating form.

“I will. See you later Dai!” Suga calls back before nearly slamming the door closed.

On his way home, Suga tries desperately to conjure up memories of all the girls he’s had crushes on in the past, tries to give himself that fluttery feeling in his chest that he knows he’s supposed to feel for them. Anything to erase the image of Daichi’s soft, sleeping expression out of his head.

It doesn’t work anywhere near as well as it should.

It takes almost a full twenty-four hours for the complete weight of the situation to hit him. He spends the first twelve hours pretending nothing happened at all, and the next twelve realizing he’s been lying to himself for much longer than a day at this point.

He can’t stop thinking about the prospect of being in a relationship with Daichi, his best friend, who is a guy. And the most terrifying part is that Suga’s heart is aching for it.

His mind is racing all throughout dinner the next evening, and he doesn’t say a word to contribute to the conversation. He’s too busy trying to explain away whatever feelings have surfaced. Surely, they don’t mean anything, right? Daichi is his best friend, it’s normal for him to want to spend all of their time together. And the touching? Also a normal best friend thing to do. Yamaguchi and Tsukishima do it too, and they’re definitely straight! ….Right?

When he’s finished eating, he jumps up to offer to clean the dishes in an attempt to give his mind something else to focus on, but it doesn’t work. Instead, he ends up putting all the plates in the wrong cupboard, and he doesn’t even notice when his mother quietly moves them back to the right place.

There’s no way he can get any studying done with his mind racing like this. He needs to get some fresh air. He needs to get out of this house where every single one of his thoughts seems to be echoing directly back at him. Before he knows what he’s doing, he’s pulling his jacket on in the genkan and calling out a quick goodbye to his parents.

“Mom, Dad, I’m going for a walk!” He calls out.

His mother appears from the living room while he’s putting his shoes on.

“Isn’t it a bit late to be going for a walk?” She asks, with a small frown on her face. Suga feels like he’s going to crawl out of his skin if he doesn’t get out of the house soon.

“Sorry, can’t talk Mom, I gotta go have a mental breakdown!” It’s admittedly a bit dramatic but his mother knows this. She’s been handling his antics for years now and could probably be considered an expert in the field by now. Which is why she simply hands him his scarf and tugs his jacket tighter around him.

“Okay, you have your phone?”

He nods, trying not to fidget too obviously.

“Alright, be safe then.” She says, before giving him a quick kiss on the forehead. Suga silently thanks her for giving him space and understanding when he desperately needs it.

The outdoor air is refreshing for a few moments, the cool breeze clearing his head a bit, but it’s not enough. The thoughts are still there gnawing at his nerves, amplifying every emotion to the thousandth degree. Before he knows it, he’s shifted from walking to a light jog, and then from a jog to a sprint.

Perhaps a part of him thinks that if he runs fast enough, he can leave these thoughts behind. Maybe he can run hard enough to forget that he might be gay, and he might be in love with his best friend, and then everything will be normal again. He can be normal again.

At least for a few moments, the familiar burn in his lungs and the ache in his legs protesting the unforgiving pace he’s set is enough to distract him. He takes solace in the mindlessness, a place where his only concern is putting the next foot in front of him. Another step forward is another giant leap away from inevitability.

But it’s not long before he can’t carry on, and he stops to catch his breath, doubling over to rest his hands on his knees. He wasn’t paying attention to where his feet were taking him, so he’s surprised when he looks up to find himself standing in front of Daichi’s house. And because the universe is clearly playing some kind of sick joke on him, it’s in front of Daichi’s house that he’s standing when Daichi himself opens the front door.

“What are you doing?” Suga blurts out, because there can’t possibly be a good reason for Daichi to open his door at this exact moment, and frankly, his brain isn’t willing to accept it.

“What am I doing.” Daichi repeats back slowly. Surprise is written all over his face at the sight of Suga, who must look completely insane, sweaty and heaving in front of his house in the middle of the night. “I’m taking out the trash,” he says as he gestures at the bag of trash in his hand that Suga failed to notice.

He pauses then, and Suga watches as the surprise on his face shifts into concern. “What are you doing?”

Suga’s mind races. He’s not at all prepared to face Daichi, the source of all his anxiety, in the middle of such a life altering realization. His heart is pounding and he can no longer discern if it’s from his run or the prospect of explaining the situation to Daichi.  But then, Daichi sets down the bag of trash and takes a couple of steps toward Suga. He’s backlit by the soft glow of light coming from his home, but Suga can still make out the kind features on his best friend’s face. It’s enough for him to remember that he’s always been able to trust Daichi with anything, including this life altering realization.

A fight against his lungs for one, deep breath. Then, an admission.

“Daichi, I think I might be gay.” He says, and promptly bursts into tears.

The next few seconds go by in a blur. First, Suga is mortified by the unwelcome tears, but in the next moment, Daichi is right in front of him, running his hands up and down Suga’s arms soothingly and a fresh wave of tears forms.

“Oh, hey, it’s okay.” He says, and where Suga is panicked and frantic, Daichi is- always has been- strong, and sure.

All of a sudden, Suga feels the magnetic pull of Daichi’s embrace, and instead of panicking at the thought like he has for the last two years of his life, he gives in, stepping forward into Daichi’s space. Daichi reciprocates immediately, wrapping his arms around Suga’s shaking frame, warm hands rubbing up and down his back while Suga sniffs pathetically into Daichi’s shoulder.

A part of Suga’s brain tries to protest, that same mantra running through his head: this is far too intimate. But now that he’s come to terms with his sexuality, at least a little, it feels like a giant weight has been lifted off his chest. He doesn’t have to be afraid anymore, because Daichi is still here, and right now, that’s all that matters.

Eventually, Suga becomes self-aware enough to choke out a half-hearted apology. “Sorry for just- showing up here like this.” He manages to get out, pulling away from Daichi a bit. “I don’t even know why I’m crying.”

“That’s okay, you’re always welcome.” Daichi says quickly, in his no-nonsense captain voice, the one that means there’s no room for argument. “Hey, maybe we should get you inside?” Daichi says, dipping his head a bit to catch Suga’s downturned gaze.

Suga suddenly realizes that he’s started to shiver from the cool night air on his sweat dried skin, and the sensation pulls him back to reality a bit.

Oh right. Suga tries to shake himself back into the situation at hand, which is… what? He’s just run all the way to Daichi’s house like a lunatic and now he’s let Daichi hug his sweaty mess of a self for a good few minutes. He’s gross and he probably smells, and Daichi just had to put up with all of that.

Daichi must sense that Suga is still a little dazed, because he places a gentle hand on Suga’s hip and guides him towards his front door and into the house, the bag of garbage from earlier completely abandoned on the front step.

“Why don’t you go up to my room and I’ll get you some water. Do you want anything else?”

Suga’s heart does a funny flip at the soft look Daichi is giving him, and it’s all he can do to shake his head no before making his way to Daichi’s room.

When Daichi gets upstairs a few moments later with a glass of water and a homemade cookie, Suga has already made himself comfortable in bed.

“I texted your mom to let her know you’ll be sleeping here.” He says, then pauses. “Do you want to talk about it?"

Now that Suga has mostly calmed down, he thinks that he probably should. That’s what emotionally mature people would do after coming out to their best friend right? But the only thing he can think of to discuss is how he came to this conclusion, and that’s the one thing he absolutely can’t tell Daichi. He can imagine the conversation already:

Hey, how’d you realize you might be gay?

Oh well I figured out I’m probably in love with you, so that kinda narrowed it down for me!

Yeah, no thank you. So instead, Suga pretends to be too tired to talk, taking a sip of the water Daichi brought him before laying down.

“No, I think I just want to sleep if that’s okay.”

“Yeah, of course, we don’t ever have to talk about it unless you want to.” Daichi says, and Suga feels a small pang of guilt at that. Here is Daichi, being so sweet and caring, while Suga can’t even begin to tell the truth about his feelings. What did he even do to deserve such an amazing best friend? Certainly nothing that warrants this kind of treatment.

Unfortunately, Suga’s rattled brain had forgotten to do the math on where Daichi would sleep if Suga took his bed, so he’s a bit taken aback when Daichi begins pulling out the futon to set up on the floor.

“Wait, you shouldn’t have to sleep on the floor.” Suga says before his brain can process any of the implications of what he’s just said.

It’s the first time Suga’s seen Daichi’s poise crack the whole night, even if just for a moment, and it finally occurs to him that if Daichi’s not sleeping on the floor, he’s sleeping in the same bed as him. And Suga literally just came out to him. And apparently has a massive crush on him.

Before Suga can have a full scale meltdown over his own idiocy, Daichi has already composed himself again, and is climbing into bed next to him after turning off the lights.

Suddenly, Daichi is close, seemingly closer than he’d been while they hugged outside, despite them not even touching. Something about lying in bed in the dark makes the whole situation feel a thousand times more intimate.

Suga is busy trying to figure out how to arrange his body in a way that leaves as much space between them as possible when Daichi speaks up.

“I know you said you don’t want to talk about it, but I realized I never said something really important.” Daichi says, voice closer to a whisper than actual speech. He waits for Suga to make eye contact before continuing on. “What you told me, that you might be gay, it doesn’t change a thing for me. You’re my best friend and who you like is never going to change that. Ever.”

Suga feels unwelcome tears well up in his eyes for the second time that night. Damn Daichi and his ability to make Suga feel things. When Suga takes too long to respond, Daichi reaches a hand up to brush a strand of hair from his face and tries again.

“Okay? I need to hear you say it.”

“Okay.” Suga manages to choke out, barely a whisper. For the second time that night, he wonders what he did to earn such care and understanding from his best friend.

“Okay.”

Suga finds he’s forced to shut his eyes to the tears threatening to fall, but a few leak out anyways. He pretends not to notice as Daichi wipes the wetness from his cheeks, and he also pretends to be asleep a few minutes later when Daichi presses a kiss to the top of his head.

He knows it doesn’t mean anything. It’s what a good friend would do, and Daichi is nothing if not a good friend.

The next morning, Suga wakes feeling more relaxed than he has in a long time. While Daichi still doesn’t know the true extent of his feelings toward him (and won’t for a long time if Suga has anything to say about it), the relief that washes over him now that he can finally stop over-analyzing those feelings and just accept them is unmatched. All the energy he’s expended over the past few years trying to shut down any thoughts about his best friend has left him tired, and now that he’s allowing himself a modicum of freedom, the thoughts won’t stop flooding in.

Over the next few days, Suga’s mind is practically consumed with those thoughts. He thinks about how reliable Daichi is, both as a captain and a friend. He thinks about Daichi’s kind eyes and soft gaze, and remembers every time that gaze quite nearly knocked him off his feet.

When he thinks back to how he’d described his ideal woman to Daichi, almost a year ago now – dark hair, a kind smile, a good leader, and yes, strong thighs – he realizes that Daichi has always had every single one of those qualities and more.

The feeling of freedom doesn’t last long though. After what Suga internally refers to as his ‘coming out honeymoon phase’, a general feeling of unease begins to settle over him. Now that he knows he has a crush on Daichi, he feels weird letting Daichi be so physically intimate with him. Before, they were just two best friends who didn’t mind occasionally holding hands or falling asleep on each other, but now there are feelings involved, and only on Suga’s end. He feels like he’s taking advantage of Daichi’s comfort in their friendship every time he allows Daichi to touch him.

So, the next time Daichi reaches out to rest a hand on Suga’s shoulder, he pulls away and tries to play it off with a playful jab to Daichi’s ribs. The next time Daichi holds his hands out before a practice match, waiting to wrap Suga’s fingers, he says he doesn’t want them wrapped for this game.

In every case, Daichi gives Suga a strange look, confusion pulling his brows together, but he always lets it go.

It’s around a week later after a practice match against Seijoh when things finally come to a head. Daichi had been falling asleep on Suga’s shoulder on the bus ride back to Karasuno and Suga had literally gotten up and changed seats to avoid the contact. Again, he’d tried to play it off, saying he wanted to ask Tanaka something, but he could tell Daichi didn’t believe it. His chest had squeezed painfully at the hurt look that flashed across Daichi’s face, but he didn't know what else to do. They can’t keep going on as they were before or Suga will surely do something he’ll regret.

When they get back to the school and finish up their post-game meeting, Daichi pulls Suga aside as the rest of the team files out of the gym. He notably doesn’t let go of his grip on Suga’s arm when Suga half-heartedly tries to break the contact.

“Okay, what’s been going on with you lately?” He asks. “Is everything okay?”

“Everything’s fine,” Suga lies, even as he feels himself begin to wilt under Daichi’s intense eye contact.

“I feel like you’ve been pulling away from me lately.” Daichi continues. “It’s honestly kind of scaring me.”

And that’s the last thing Suga wanted out of all of this.

“I just don’t want things to be weird between us, now that I’ve…” He trails off. It’s not exactly the whole truth but it’s a start.

“Didn’t I say nothing would change?” Daichi responds, and he says it with such force, such conviction, but Suga realizes that’s the very core of the problem. He can’t handle being in limbo any longer.

“Daichi, what if I want something to change?”

Suga doesn’t think he’s ever seen his dependable captain at a complete loss for words before now.

“What if I want it to actually mean something whenever we touch? What if I’ve been pulling away because I know that it doesn’t?” Now that he’s started, he can’t stop himself. “What if the reason for all of this – me realizing I’m gay, coming out – what if it’s all because I figured out I-” His bravery finally wears out and he finishes the sentence at a whisper, eyes downcast. “I really, really like you Daichi.”

The silence that fills the gym is terrifying.

“Can I kiss you?”

“What?” Suga whips his head back up to look at Daichi, searching for the lie in his words, but he only finds the same sincerity with which Daichi has always looked at him. Now it’s Suga’s turn to be stunned into silence.

“I’ve had a crush on you since our first year, Suga. A week ago, I found out I might actually have a chance with you, and now you’re telling me I definitely do, so I would really like to kiss you now.”

“Oh. Uh yeah, definitely.” Suga nods a bit frantically. He thinks his soul must have entered into another plane of existence because this was not at all how he was expecting Daichi to react. Before he has time to second guess himself, Daichi leans in to press their lips together.

Suga has spent most of his life imagining himself kissing faceless girls, trying to guess at what that would feel like. Having only come out to himself a few days ago, he’s spent very little time imagining what it would feel like to kiss a boy, and for it to be Daichi for that matter. But he’s certain that even with all the time in the world, his daydreams could still never compare to the real thing.

The kiss is gentle and chaste. Daichi’s lips are warm against his, and he finally lets go of his grip on Suga’s arm to thread his fingers into Suga’s hair at the back of his neck. His other arm wraps around Suga’s back, deepening the kiss. Suga’s head starts to feel light so he instinctively grabs a hold of Daichi’s arm to ground himself. Some far away part of his brain is rejoicing at the chance to finally, finally indulge in those biceps.

When they break apart, Suga feels breathless, and Daichi looks it as well. Suga can’t resist the bright smile that cracks his face.

“We just kissed.” He says, since his brain is still eight light-years away.

“Yeah, we did.” Daichi laughs incredulously, and the sight of it makes Suga want to kiss him again, to kiss him a thousand times over.

“I really liked it.”

“Thank god.” And Daichi looks so genuinely relieved. As though Suga could have possibly felt any different.

“Well then,” Suga starts, flashing a grin at Daichi. “I guess you’re my boyfriend now.” And he really likes the way the word boyfriend sounds.

“Oh yeah? Then I guess that means I can do this whenever I want.”

He kisses Suga again, and Suga is pleasantly surprised to learn that kissing Daichi can get even better. He feels a wave of giddiness wash over him at the prospect of learning all the different ways being around Daichi can get even better now.

“By the way, Daichi” Suga starts when they break apart again, “I feel like I have to tell you because we’re dating now, and it’s bad to start a relationship on a lie. I actually don’t really like wearing tape on my fingers during games. I just let you wrap them because I liked it when you held my hands.”

Daichi laughs, a deep, bright sound. “And you didn’t know you were gay?!”

Suga smiles a bit sheepishly.

“Okay, fine, I probably knew deep down for a while. Probably since the day I met you.”
