Chapter Text

The beginning of April has always been Yoongi’s favourite time of the year. He loves the beginning of Spring, the beginning of the warmer weather. Walking through the small farm land he acquired a year ago has become his new favourite thing to do in the morning.

As he walks through the newly paved stone path he’s spent all summer on the year before, an unexpected flood of memories he thought he'd gotten over came rushing in. “Fuck.”

Out of all his quiet moments he’s had over the winter season, why would his memories decide to haunt him now?

* * *

It has been roughly two years since his life has been turned upside down. He had started his  original business in the middle of university, a small music shop he started out of a whim while teaching guitar part-time. It eventually turned into a big scale music superstore in merely four years. It was a business he never dreamed he could have. Not only was the store flourishing, he had the life most people in their late 20s would consider a perfect one.

Right after graduating university, Yoongi proposed to his childhood sweetheart Seoyeon. While their engagement lasted longer than Yoongi had expected, they finally tied the knot after signing the lease for the second location for his music store. Everything was just going the way he wanted, his business expanding at a healthy rate and he’s finally married the person he loved.

His relationship with Seoyeon was perfect, or so he thought. They rarely fought all through the years and Seoyeon would never complain about anything since they started dating. Marriage life was peaceful, Yoongi had continued his busy work schedule while Seoyeon would stay at home. Roughly a year into their marriage, Seoyeon voiced her concern for the very first time. She would complain about how boring it was to stay home with nothing better to do. Yoongi, as the most understanding husband one could have, accommodated anything she requested. Without giving it much thought, Yoongi agreed to Seoyeon’s request to let her become a part of his business. She would accompany Yoongi to work three days a week, learning all the ins and outs of the business and eventually, Yoongi even added her name as a co-owner of the business.

Yoongi couldn’t recall exactly when or how it started, but it was definitely a few months into the opening of the superstore he had started getting weird messages from his best friend. Jung Hoseok, another childhood friend that grew up with Yoongi and Seoyeon, would start texting Yoongi about Seoyeon’s whereabouts.

SMS:

Yoongi: Why are you asking again? She should be home today.

Hoseok: Are you sure she’s home?

Yoongi: Yeah, or maybe she could be out shopping, idk

Hoseok: Hmm ok

Yoongi: This is the third time you’ve asked me this week, what’s up?

Hoseok: I… don’t know if I should say anything..

Yoongi: Hoseok-ah, just spill… we’ve known each other long enough for this bs

Hoseok: sigh… I know, it’s just that I’m not 100% sure about it

Yoongi: Ok, then we can find the rest of the % to be sure, what’s up with Seoyeon?

Hoseok: … I think she’s cheating on you….

Never in Yoongi’s life did he ever imagine connecting the word ‘cheating’ when it comes to Seoyeon. They’ve been friends since they were six, dating since highschool and now they’re married. They were the perfect couple, or at least in Yoongi’s eyes anyway. How could someone he’s shared most of his life with cheat on him?!

Things didn’t take long before it evolved into a full on drama fueled breakup. A long string of lies started uncovering itself as Yoongi slowly traced Seoyeon’s whereabouts. Not only was Seoyeon cheating on him with another man, they have been scheming to take over Yoongi’s business, leaving him with nothing after the divorce.

Yoongi was broken, he couldn’t understand what went wrong. If Seoyeon was unhappy with him, why didn’t she voice it earlier? And worse of all, was she only with Yoongi for the money?

SMS:

Yoongi: Hoseok-ah, am I a terrible person?

Hoseok: the fuck? Of course not!!! Why do you even think that!

Yoongi: because why else would Seoyeon do this? I must have done something terrible to make her this way…

Hoseok: Well, while idk what happens behind closed doors, you’re not a terrible person, FAR FROM IT! Why don’t you try and talk to her, you know, just to have some closure?

Yoongi: Sigh..

SMS:
Yoongi: Seoyeon-ah, can we please talk?

Seoyeon: Why? I’m not changing my mind about the divorce.

Yoongi: I’m not trying to change your mind, I just want to know why.

Seoyeon: Why what?

Yoongi: Why all of this… if you’re not happy with me, why marry me…? Why didn’t you say something…

Seoyeon: Because you never listen! Everything is always about you, nothing’s more important to you than work. What am I supposed to do, wait for you everyday to do something?

Yoongi: But you could have said something, I thought we were happy…

Seoyeon: Look at you, blaming me again for all of this. You brought this all on yourself Min Yoongi. Just sign the damn papers and get over with it.

Yoongi believed all her words wholeheartedly, he must have been a terrible partner for all of this to happen. It was true, he had always thought about work more than anything. He wanted to make enough to have a comfortable life for himself and his future family. Perhaps it was all a mistake for wanting that in the first place, Yoongi told himself repeatedly.

While Yoongi was left with almost nothing, a year before all of this mess happened, Yoongi had secretly acquired a small piece of land in the outskirts of the city. He had kept it a secret not because he wanted to hide it from Seoyeon and other people, but mostly because he wanted it as a peaceful place for himself when he needed it. Why would he even think he would need such a place, he never realized until much later.

* * *

He really shouldn’t let those memories ruin a beautiful morning. Realizing he’s been standing on the same spot the past five minutes, Yoongi quickly gives himself a few good slap on the cheeks, shakes off the bad feelings and heads towards his apiary.

The warm weather and fresh air definitely made a difference, within a few minutes Yoongi already felt better than ever. The farm land isn’t a big one, obviously when he made the purchase, he never expected he would end up alone with nothing. His original intention with this piece of land had definitely changed from leisure to part of his source of sanctuary and a means of income.

Yoongi was no stranger to raising bees, he’s read up on them a lot over the years and even took a workshop for it a while ago. But actually being hands on raising them by himself was definitely a first. As he walks closer towards the dozen hives he had set up deeper into the farmland, the buzzing of the bees become louder. They are like music to his ears. Thinking back to his younger years, he remembers for years he would get made fun of for his fondness of bugs and insects, kids at school would even make up nicknames for him such as bug boy or worm head. He didn’t like any of it at all, and perhaps that was also why he became close friends with Hoseok and Seoyeon, they were the only ones that never made fun of it and even fought the other kids whenever they would tease him for it. Then his obsessions turn solely over bees, he loves everything about them. Eventually it turns to more than just bees themselves, he would decorate his home with things related to them. The shelves in his home are custom made into looking like honeycombs, the walls are a shade of pastel yellow and golden brown. Most of his glassware is covered with designs of bees. Along with his obsessions, the nicknames that followed him to his adulthood changed as well. He was no longer the bug boy anymore, instead his friends and family would start calling him the honey boy. Definitely a name he didn’t mind at all.

The bees are buzzing about as he goes through them one by one, checking on the condition of each hive, marking down things he observed on a tiny note on each box. Making sure each of the queens are still thriving and that the hives are growing at a steady rate. Seeing each of them doing well gives him a sense of accomplishments even though he didn’t have to do much. Then he noticed something off with the last two hives at the corner of the apiary. There’s no bees buzzing about, and the boxes have obvious damage on the outside. Did something or someone mess with them over the winter? It’s a complete disaster as he gets closer, there’s a pile of dead bees on the ground under the stands. He opens up the lid, pulls out a few of the frames and there are nothing but honey and empty cells in it, the queen is nowhere to be found. The state of these two boxes are worse than Yoongi imagined, the sight of all the dead bees saddens him, more than he expects. And soon one thought leads to another, the sadness slowly consumes his mind, sending him into a spiral of emotions. If there were other people around, Yoongi would most likely keep it bottled in. But now that he’s all by himself, without others' judgement, he breaks down in a sobbing mess.
