Chapter Text
“I made a mixtape.”
“God, Dickie, what is this? The 90’s?”
With a pout, Dick shoved the CD into the stereo. “It’s for when we lose cell signal.”
“Wayne Tech won’t let that happen.” Jason rolled his eyes as they pulled into a parking spot. “You just wanted to burn a CD, didn’t you?”
“A little bit.” Dick grinned. “Remember how we used to make them together?”
“A whole stack of them for one weekend camping trip.” Jason chuckled. He pulled his obligatory sunglasses and hat disguise on as they leaned side-by-side against the car. He sighed, “Such a sap, Dickiebird.” Dick jostled his shoulder playfully.
Damian was the first one out. His Gotham Academy uniform was still tidy and tucked in, unwrinkled even with his backpack on. He stopped on the sidewalk, looking for Alfred in the pickup line until Jason whistled sharply. His eyes snapped to them. Then he frowned.
“Where’s Pennyworth?” Damian demanded. “Has something happened?”
“Nothing except fun, kiddo.” Dick pulled Damian into a hug and mussed up his carefully combed hair.
With a scowl, Damian jerked his head away but didn’t shake Dick’s hand off his shoulder. “Why are you and Todd here?”
“A surprise,” Jason said. “Your favorite shortstack.”
Tim came rolling down the sidewalk on his skateboard five minutes later, shoving a book in his backpack as he chatted with classmates. He spotted them faster than Damian had and his face lit up.
“What are you doing here!" Tim called excitedly, picking up speed as he headed to the car. A teacher glared at him and he hopped off the board with a roll of his eyes. Then he suddenly frowned. “Wait, what are you doing here? Is Alfred–”
“Everyone is fine!” Jason rolled his eyes and lightly pushed Tim towards the car as he chucked the skateboard in the trunk along with Tim and Damian’s bags. “Now get in, you worry warts. We’re having fun.”
“Fun?” Tim asked as he clambered in.
“Yeah babybird, fun. Ever heard of it?”
“Richard–”
“I’m not telling you either!” Dick sang. “We packed bags for you both and you’ll find out soon enough where we’re going. Just sit back and enjoy the mixtape I made.”
Both boys groaned loudly at that. But then Tim was hanging onto the back of Jason’s seat, talking about a breakthrough in his coding project, and Damian was looking at the highway signs with not-so-subtle excitement. Dick and Jason shared a quick look as they tried to hide their grins.
It was going to be a good weekend.
