Work Text:
She knows that multiple pairs of eyes are following her every step. But she doesn‘t mind. All these people will remember is a young lady who wanted to escape the harsh reality for a night.
For the better half of an hour she aimlessly walks from table to table, nipping at her glass that contains only water and slowly circling in on the man who has caught everyone’s attention even more than she has.
And not in a good way.
It is obvious that he is only here to let off some steam. He plays impulsively, betting when he should fold, folding when he still had a chance at winning. Lena smirks. She stops at the table next to him, shooting him a glance every now and then.
After a few minutes he is down to his last few Jetons. That‘s when Lena makes her move.
„A beautiful night, isn‘t it“, she says, as she walks up behind him. He turns towards her, his face a mask of anger until he really looks at her. Then it is replaced by pure desire. Lena bites her lip.
„This may turn into a beautiful night after all. But this is not my lucky table tonight.“
Lena runs her fingers along his shirt collar. She leans down and whispers: „Maybe your luck is waiting somewhere else.“
Her lips brush against his ear, barely touching his skin. It is a promise that sends shivers down his spine. Without waiting for a reaction, Lena turns around and makes her way through the crowded room, fully aware that he is following a few steps behind her.
She smirks. The suit has been the right choice.
More than one pair of eyes rests on her back as she presses the button and waits for the elevator. He comes closer and falls silent a few steps behind her. He won‘t have this kind of self-control much longer.
She steps into the elevator. From the corner of her eyes she watches as he and another man walk in. The lucky looser presses the button for the ninth floor. Where his room is. So predictable. Despite his obvious eagerness, he manages to keep his hands to himself until the elevator door opens and the other man, who had stepped in with them, leaves the elevator cabin. The door closes again and immediately his hands are all over her. He roughly presses his lips on hers.
She lets her hands roam over his waist. His knife is hidden well enough to not be detected at the entrance but not well enough to escape her skilled fingers. She grins into the kiss, moving her hands up his back. The leather strap of his holster is pressed tightly against his skin.
They part for a split second, long enough for Lena to glance at the elevator display. Fifth floor. Good. More than enough time.
While he lets his lips wander over her neck, she steps out of her right shoe and slowly pushes upward. Nothing on the left leg, but a small holster is clipped around his right ankle. Brainy hadn‘t lied when he told them that the security in the casino is embarrassingly corrupt.
Her ministrations have an obvious effect on him and as the elevator door opens at their floor, he stumbles out and follows her lead mindlessly. She pushes him against the wall right next to his room.
„The card?“, she whispers and softly bites his neck.
He moans. „Left pocket.“
She already knew that and only waited for his words to dispense his last disbelief. In one swift motion she unlocks the door and pushes it open. He clings to her as they stumble towards the bedroom.
The room is filled with a soft, sweet scent that heightens Lena‘s attention immediately.
„Do you want to refresh yourself?“
It surprises Lena that he still has enough senses together to ask this question. She shakes her head and presses her lips against his. Then she whispers: „Let‘s get this show on the road.“
But she doesn‘t look at him. Her eyes are fixated on a figure behind him in a beautiful satin suit.
„Gladly“, he whispers.
„I wasn’t talking to you.“
He wants to pull her closer, but Lena is faster. With a quick motion she pulls up her knee. He doubles over. With calculated force she brings her elbow down on his neck. In the next second, he lies motionless on the ground.
„Impressive“, Kara cues. Faster than humanly possible she is standing behind Lena and presses a soft kiss against her neck. Lena closes her eyes and leans back against her.
Kara wrinkles her nose. „You smell like him.“
Lena chuckles and grabs Kara‘s hand. „Not for very much longer, I hope.“ She turns around and kisses her girlfriend passionately. Their bodies press into each other, perfectly mirroring each other’s movements. When they part, Kara lets out a protesting moan. Lena grins and presses her finger against the taller woman‘s lips. „But first, work.“
Kara groans. But then she lets go of Lena and kneels down next to the unconscious man.
„Two pistols, not bad.“
„And the knife at his waist.“
Kara frowns and uses her x-ray-vision again. „I can‘t see it.“
„Then our intel was correct.“ Lena kneels down opposite from her girlfriend. She turns the man‘s body and removes the knife from his belt. She turns it in between her fingers. It is made from a light material, not quite metal, but not quite plastic either. Carefully she presses a finger against the blade. It is sharper than any weapon she has ever touched.
„Incredible“, she whispers. „Undetectable and deadly.“
„Just like you“, Kara returns and pulls Lena to her feet. The knife drops to the floor as Kara kisses Lena passionately.
„Someone is restless today“, Lena grins and presses her knee in between Kara‘s legs.
Kara groans and moves Lena‘s hair out of the way. „I had to wait up here while half of the people in the casino undressed you with their eyes.“
Lena almost dissolves under Kara‘s touch. Her lips are warm against her skin, her fingers like feathers, giving her goosebumps all over her body.
„Darling, don‘t pretend you didn‘t do just the same from up here.“
„You are my girlfriend.“
Lena can‘t argue with that. When Kara starts to open the buttons on her suit, Lena stops her with a short gesture and grins: „So eager!“
„Not my fault“, Kara mumbles. „This suit may look incredible on you, but-“
„Please don‘t say it would look better on the floor.“
„Ok, then I won‘t. But that doesn‘t mean it‘s not true.“
Lena laughs whole heartedly. This is so highly unprofessional that it is kind of enticing.
„We should check in with Brainy. And afterwards you will have my full attention.“
„Promise?“ Kara leans her forehead against Lena‘s. They stare into each other‘s eyes as if they could stop time like this.
Lena gives Kara one last kiss and nods solemnly. „I promise.“
Only grudgingly Kara moves back and opens the way for Lena to cross the room. She picks up a small devise and secures it behind her ear.
„Brainy, can you hear me?“
„Loud and clear. Did everything go according to plan?“
Lena looks at Kara who effortlessly lifts up the unconscious man and places him on the bed. She then proceeds to pick up and inspect the knife.
„Yes. We have secured the knife. You were right, Kara can‘t detect it with her x-ray-vision.“
„Bring it safely to the headquarters and I can analyse it to make sure that it is made from the stolen material.“
„Well, there aren‘t a lot of materials that Kara can‘t detect and the weight of the knife seems to align with the amount that was stolen from the secret lab.“
„We still can‘t be sure until I have analysed it“, Brainy insists.
Lena grins and shakes her head. „Of course, Agent Dox. We will make our way to the headquarters immediately. We‘ll be there in half an hour.“
„Maybe not“, Kara interjects.
Lena looks up. „What is it?“
Kara opens and closes her fists over and over again. The eagerness in her eyes is gone. Instead, Lena sees something that almost looks like fear. „Kara, what is it?“
„My powers... they are getting weaker.“
„What?“
The dark haired woman storms over to her girlfriend. She is incredibly pale.
„Kryptonite?“
Kara shakes her head: „It doesn‘t hurt. It feels like something is dampening my powers.“
„How is that possible?“
„Maybe they aren‘t as unprepared as we have thought“, Brainy chimes in.
With one hand pressed against her ear piece, Lena asks: „What makes you say that?“
„Something is happening in the casino. Your way out is blocked.“
„Can you fly us out of here?“
Kara shakes her head. „I can barely hear what‘s going on down there.“
„Brainy, how do they even know we‘re here?“
„It pains me to say it, but I have no idea.“
„And more importantly, why didn‘t they stop us from taking the knife?“
„Maybe because it is not about the knife“, Lena says and frowns. She turns towards the unconscious man. „Everyone saw him leave. No one cared.“
For a moment, Lena just stares at the unconscious man.
„It was a trap“, Kara realises just moments before Lena can say the words. „The knife was a red Hering. They’re after us.“
Their eyes meet as Lena presses the ear piece even closer to her head. „Brainy, it was a trap. Can you detect where the power dampener is located?“
„It is in the casino.“
Lena sighs. Of course it is. Why should this mission be an easy one?
„Are you strong enough to do this?“
Kara seems to be offended by the question. „I am not defenseless without my powers.“ As if to give more weight to her words, she pulls out a gun.
„I know you aren’t.“
The dark haired spy takes one of the guns of their unconscious guest. She leans in and kisses Kara softly. „Ready?“
„With you by my side? Always.“
„They are checking the building floor by floor“, Brainy informs the spies, as they run down the stairs that they had designated as their plan b escape route. „I can pilot you through to the Casino, but once you are there, a head on collision is unavoidable.“
„Just get us to the Casino and we‘ll take care of the rest.“
Suddenly Kara slips up and Lena can barely catch her before the blonde tumbles down the stairs.
„Kara!“
Immediately Lena is on her knees next to her girlfriend and carefully helps her to sit up. „Are you ok?“
Kara presses her hand against her forehead. Lena has never seen her like that. She seems... fragile. Like a child who has somehow stumbled into a James Bond movie.
„It‘s nothing“, Kara mumbles and tries to stand up, but her legs give in under her. Again, Lena catches her.
„It‘s not nothing.“ Lena presses Kara down and makes sure that the other spy stays put while she speaks into her ear piece. „Brainy, Kara is getting weaker by the second.“
„I am ok!“, the blonde insists and stands up. This time she can keep herself upright. But just barely.
„Don‘t listen to her“, Lena returns and shots Kara an angry glance. Her girlfriend is incredibly strong, but also unbelievably stubborn. „We need a way out of here without engaging. Kara cannot fight.“
„Yes I can!“
Lena jumps to her feet and has to control herself to not push her girlfriend against the wall. „You can barely keep yourself upright. You cannot fight.“
Kara scoffs: „I can always fight. And we don‘t have another choice anyways.“
„Then let Brainy find one.“
„I hate to disappoint“, Brainy chimes in. „But Kara is right. There is no other way. The windows of the hotel are made from bullet proof glass and without Kara‘s powers they are impossible to break. The front door and the kitchen entrance are heavily guarded. You have to destroy to power dampener, there is literally no other way.“
His words make Lena‘s heart sink.
Impatiently Kara makes a step towards her girlfriend: „What did he say?“
„We have to destroy the dampener“, Lena admits grudgingly. Kara nods and makes her way down another flight of stairs. Lena follows right behind, always ready to take an extra step to catch her girlfriend again.
This is not going to be easy.
When they reach the third floor, they hear the steps of their enemies below them. Brainy directs them into an empty hallway. Or at least they think so. After a few steps, Brainy calls out.
„They changed their route! They are coming directly towards you!“
Before Lena can even ask for a hiding spot, she can already hear their steps. Without giving it a second thought, she pulls Kara with her towards the closest door. She pushes it open and stumbles into the broom closet. It is barely big enough for the both of them. Kara opens her mouth, but Lena motions her to remain silent.
She can feel the heroes breath on her cheeks as they wait motionless. A few moments later, the men run past their position.
„Brainy?“, Lena whispers.
„All clear!“
Lena looks at Kara, who has closed her eyes. She is frowning in a way that Lena has only seen a few times. Kara is in immense pain. Lena carefully brushes a lose strand of hair out of the heroes face. „You stay here. I will destroy the power dampener and when your powers have returned, you‘ll come to help me.“
Kara shakes her head: „No way. I won‘t let you walk in there alone.“
„I am not leaving you a choice“, Lena returns. „I will not risk you getting hurt in this state.“
She brushes a kiss on Kara‘s lips. „Just promise that you‘ll hurry once you get your powers back.“
„I‘ll be with you in a heartbeat“, Kara promises and presses her body against Lena‘s. For a moment, they lean their foreheads against each other. Then Lena is gone. The door silently closes behind her and leaves Kara alone in the darkness.
The pain in her head is overwhelming and lets her forget how small the closet is that she is in. She leans against the shelf behind her and closes her eyes.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Her whole body feels like it is numb. As if all energy has been pulled from her cells. And from moment to moment, the feeling of helplessness in her grows. She shouldn‘t have let Lena go alone. This is insane!
The pain is almost unbearable, but Kara fights her way out of the closet and stumbles down the hallway towards the staircase. The men should be at least one floor above her at the moment.
Slowly she enters the staircase and listens. A sharp pain erupts in her head as she tries to use her superhearing.
„Shit!“, she exclaims and stumbles down a few steps of the stairs, barely managing to stay on her feet. The only thing that keeps her going is the thought of Lena fighting all alone, with no backup.
At the ground floor, Kara can barely see more than white lights dancing in front of her eyes. She opens the door to the casino without thinking about what could be waiting behind it.
Pain erupts in her temple as something hard connects with her skin. She stumbles backwards, clashing against the door.
„Kara! No!“ Lena‘s scream rings in Kara‘s ears. Then all hell breaks losoe. The other spy must have been able to overwhelm one of the attackers, at least the focus of their enemy’s seems to shift away from Kara.
She fights herself back to her feet.
Shots are fired, but Kara can barely make out what is happening right in front of her. Her hand rests on the wall to stabilise her. Then a loud noise echoes through the casino, as something breaks into a thousand pieces.
„Kara!“
This time Lena‘s voice is barely more than a suffocating whisper. But Kara hears hear as if she were screaming it at her. The pain in her head lessens.
„Kara...“
With every moment Kara sees clearer. Her muscles tingle as her strength returns to her. Even before she is back to her old self, Kara rushes towards the corner of the room, in which Lena is pinned to the wall by one of their enemies. Faster than humanly possible, Kara has grabbed his shoulders and thrown him through the room.
She doesn‘t turn around to see him hit the wall and instead crouches down next to Lena, who has fallen to the ground. Her whole body is shaking as she tries to get enough air into her lungs.
„Behind you!“, she presses out. Kara doesn‘t need to be told twice.
With a growl she spins around and uses her newly gained strength and superspeed to make quick work of their enemies. Seconds later they are all unconscious or have decided that fleeing is their best option if they want to survive.
Lena barely notices any of it. She is too occupied trying to breathe again. Going in alone had been a terrible idea and one of the men had gotten ahold of her. Suddenly, soft hands pick her up.
Intuitively she snuggles up against the strong chest of her girlfriend. Moments later, they are hovering above the city and for the first time Lena can breathe freely again.
„Brainy, we are out. The mission is over. Don‘t expect us back for at least 24 hours.“
Without waiting for an answer, Lena pulls out the ear piece and puts it in her pocket. She is still a little dizzy, but the fresh air makes it easier for her to breathe.
„Are you ok?“, Kara asks worried.
Lena nods: „What about you?“
„Everything back to normal.“
Lena frowns and extends her hand. Carefully she brushes her fingers over Kara‘s temple, where a dark bruise is starting to form. „Almost.“ Lena bites her lip. The soft wind slowly pulls apart Kara‘s ponytail.
„I told you to wait“, Lena finally says. „You shouldn‘t have come after me. You could have died!“
„So could you“, Kara returns. „And that‘s the deal, isn‘t it? No one gets to make this decision alone. We do it together or we don‘t do it at all.“
Lena grins. „Stronger together.“
Kara presses her lips on Lena‘s. The dark haired spy lets her hands roam through Kara‘s hair. When they part again, both are breathless. They press their foreheads together.
„El mayarah.“
