Kojiro was woken up by someone stepping on a creaky floorboard. The room was completely dark, the only light was the soft pink glow of Carla charging in the corner, but that wasn’t enough to see who had made the noise. Kaoru was still next to him, and there weren’t really many other options for who it could be.
“Miya?” Footsteps shuffled closer to the bed. “Is there something that you need?”
“Can I sleep in your bed? I had a nightmare, and I already tried to fall back asleep, but it’s been like an hour and”
“Of course you can sleep here,” Kojiro cut him off. He didn’t want Miya to get stuck in a nervous loop of rambling.
Kojiro untangled Kaoru’s limbs from around him and moved to the side to make room for Miya. Now that Kojiro’s eyes had adjusted to the light he could see that the kid looked nervous. He didn’t know if it was because of the nightmare or something else, but either way he wanted to help.
“What about Cherry? Isn’t me getting into the bed going to wake him up?”
“I doubt it.” Once Kaoru was asleep he usually stayed asleep until Carla woke him up or he woke up on his own. “And if it does he won’t mind. I promise.”
“Okay.”
Miya climbed over Kojiro to lay in between him and Kaoru. He elbowed him in the side while trying to get comfortable. Kojiro tried to hide his reaction as much as he could, he didn’t want to worry Miya more.
“You comfortable?”
“Yeah.”
“Would a story help you fall asleep?”
“I’m not five,” Miya said, although it didn’t have the usual meanness behind it, the kid just sounded tired. “But I guess you could tell a story. If you wanted to.”
Kojiro smiled. If you had told him three months ago that he would be telling a bedtime story to the kid in a cat hoodie at S because he had a nightmare he would have not believed you. A lot had changed in the past couple months, but Kojiro was glad that it had. He couldn’t imagine not having Saturday night dinners at Sia la Luce with his friends, and taking care of Miya while his parents were away on business trips was becoming a regular part of his life.
He started telling a story about him and Kaoru from highschool. Kojiro could feel Miya start to relax next to him as he got further into the story. He even let out a small laugh at some points. Kojiro had made it about half way through when he saw that Miya had fallen asleep. He pulled the blanket up to cover him better before falling asleep himself. Kojiro had no idea what time it was, but he could barely keep his eyes open at this point. Both Miya and Kaoru were asleep so he let himself drift off as well.
