Work Text:

Aoi yawned and stretched. Luckily his guest wasn't offended and understood his situation.

Uruha was working late. He sent a text to let Aoi know the moment he’d wake up. The vampire thought it would be a lonely, uneventful night. He had no plans apart from lazing in bed until his lover came home. So he was surprised when he received an unexpected visit from one of his closest friends.

Kai was smiling at him as he sipped his tea. Taking no offense to Aoi's tiredness. The two met many, many years ago. Well before Aoi met Uruha. Kai was human. Well, as human as any immortal sorcerer could be considered. He was a powerful magic user and a master warlock. He specialized in kitchen witchery, an often overlooked practice. He spent years learning and memorizing recipes while his colleagues studied more brash and theatrical magics. But through his hard work he managed to uncover the long thought secrets to immortality. Which he keeps as a closely guarded secret, rarely sharing it with others.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you." Kai shyly hid a smile behind his cup.

Aoi saw his trademark dimple appear as the man let out a soft laugh. At first impression, the man looked harmless. Adorable even. But the vampire knew better. The innocence was a facade for the truly malicious sorcerer. He’s seen it first hand. And pities anyone who gets on Kai’s bad side.

"No worries. I was getting up anyway." Aoi waved off the concern and sat up straight, cracking his back. "But with Uruha out I didn't have any reasons to leave the bed."

Aoi finally settled back against the couch and crossed his legs. The curtains were open revealing the darkness of night just outside. The dim glow of streetlights outside let the vampire know that it was rather late by human standards.

"So what brings you here?" Aoi knew the man wasn’t here for just a random visit. Though he was grateful for the company, he knew Kai well enough.

"I just wanted to visit my favorite vampire. Do I need any other reason?" Kai tilted his head and smiled. His brown eyes lacked the warmth of the smile.

"Uh-huh...so where's Ruki?" Aoi folded his hands, unconvinced by the sorcerer. "Did you two have a fight?"

It was odd to see Kai without his beloved. Ruki was younger, and not as experienced as Kai. But that didn’t mean he lacked skill. Ruki had great proficiency in numerous schools of magic. His most prominent field of study was the dark arts. Combined with Kai’s knowledge, the couple were one of the most accomplished, and powerful sorcerers. Both taking advantage of their immortality by further studying and perfecting their craft.

Their love for each other was obvious. Both of them are hard headed in their pursuits, so naturally they’ve had a few spats. Nothing serious, just comical little fights. Aoi has always been entertained by their bickering.

"Oh no, nothing like that." Kai laughed and placed his empty cup on the end table beside him. "He just came home with a box full of stray puppies again. So I told him if he didn’t take them to a shelter by the end of the day he may end up with a surprise in his breakfast some morning.”

Though Ruki was oftentimes seen as the most intimidating of the pair, Aoi knew the real force to be reckoned with was Kai. Though the man laughed, the vampire knew it wasn’t an empty threat. Kai wasn’t above poisoning his own lover. It was mostly harmless. Ruki’s immortality prevented him from dying. But he wished for death with how sick the poison makes him.

The vampire was sure the threat was enough to have Ruki find a proper shelter for the strays.

“And Reita?” Aoi smirked, knowing Ruki wasn’t the only reason for the visit.

Reita was the demon the pair summoned centuries ago. They made a pact and Reita has loyally followed them. Aoi wasn’t sure of the details of their pact, all he knew was that Reita was like a child. The demon has always been eager to learn of the human world. He turned into a bookworm craving knowledge. You could always find the demon with his mask-covered nose in a book. Too bad the books he mostly read were fictitious stories instead of actual reference books. But it made him happy so they all let him go. The trio were like a family. Kai and Ruki were the parents and the big, tough demon was their child. The image was humorous to Aoi.

“You know, I am always pleased to see him so adamant in reading. But he has a hard time returning my library back to alphabetical order. So I’m giving him a few hours to organize it properly.” Kai tapped his chin with his index finger.

“And if he doesn’t?”

“Oh, he will.” Kai’s voice dropped low and he smirked.

“Very unsettling.” Aoi laughed. For both Ruki and Reita’s sake, he hoped they got the house back in order before Kai returned.

Humans are so interesting. The vampire thought. They are capable of so much. He has watched from the shadows as society has evolved through the years. He’s seen what mankind is capable of; space travel, globalization, even magic. There truly was nothing out of their reach. Any challenge placed in front of them was met head on. Aoi has seen the depths of creativity and the spark of innovation. Generations fighting for a better tomorrow for those that come after them. The human mind knows no limitation. It is all so beautiful to the vampire.

The door to the apartment swung open and Uruha staggered in. He struggled with the laces of his shoes and dropped his phone. When the honey blonde man bent over to pick it up, his glasses fell out of his shirt pocket. He accidentally stepped on them while trying to take his one shoe off. He spent five minutes juggling his belongings before finally slipping his shoes off and coming to the living room to greet the two of them. Aoi and Kai watched in amusement at the bumbling, Three Stooges-esqu entertainment the mortal provided.

Humans may be beautiful, but nothing compares to this particular human. Aoi thought as he watched Uruha hold up his now broken glasses. They way the man pursed his lips as he inspected them. His eyes squinted as he looked at his now useless spectacles. Uruha was perfectly imperfect. Nothing could ever compare to him.

“Sorry for being so late, we were short staffed.” Uruha walked further into the living room putting his glasses down and sighing. He looked up and saw the two sitting on the couch.

“Oh, hi Kai! Didn’t know you were here.” Uruha smiled brightly.

Aoi was transfixed by the way Uruha’s nose scrunched as he smiled a full tooth grin. Showing off each of his sharp teeth. The vampire wondered how he ended up with a human whose own teeth were sharper than some vampires. Aoi smiled at his lover, the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.
