Work Text:
Reki had to admit, he hadn’t been looking forward to the camping trip. Langa and his mother had decided to go camping, and Langa had invited Reki along. He had given him those adorable blue puppy eyes and he just couldn’t bear to say no.
But now he’d have to spend a couple days away from his bed, woodworking, and skating. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do. He’d never been the kind of person to enjoy hiking or exploring nature.
Thankfully, he did enjoy Langa’s presence. He didn’t know if it would be enough to keep him happy for several days out in the woods.
Langa’s mom had been driving upwards towards the camping site for almost an hour. Reki was leaning his head against the car door to try and relax, but the car door was hard and uncomfortable, so he wallowed in shallow misery for the whole ride.
When they finally arrived near the campsite, they all hopped out of the back and began retrieving the things that Langa’s mother had packed.
They had prepared all sorts of things that would have been necessary for a camping trip in Canada. But in Okinawa, there was no need to protect oneself from bears or wolves. Reki was thankful he didn’t have to worry about such things, even if it did take a bit of thrill out of the whole experience.
Reki and Langa carried a majority of the backpacks. They didn’t mind, considering Langa’s mother would take care of the cooking and a large part of setting up the tent.
After about fifteen minutes of searching, Nanako finally found a spot. It was in a meadow, and there were several patches where the ground was flat enough to comfortably set up a tent.
Reki and Langa took care of setting up the tents while Langa’s mother found a safe spot to make a fire so that she wouldn’t torch the entire forest. When she found a spot she was satisfied with, she cleared absolutely everything remotely flammable and began assembling rocks in a ring. Any wood chips, dead grass, or otherwise flammable vegetation was put in the center.
But, once everyone’s tent had been set up and the fire pit was created, there really wasn’t much else to do. It was late afternoon, Reki estimated that sunset was about two hours away. What was he supposed to do with all that time?
“Langa, I’m bored.” Reki complained.
“Hmmm, well, in two hours, we’ll start cooking. Have you ever had a s’more before?” Langa asked.
“No.” Reki replied. S’more was a weird word. It definitely didn’t sound Japanese, which meant that it was probably like poutine, where it was either a cultural dish or didn’t even have a Japanese name.
“What is a s’more?” Reki asked, awkwardly pronouncing the word.
“Oh my goodness!” Langa shouted. He then went on a whole tangent describing all of the components of a s’more. Then, that conversation spiraled into a vast retelling of all his past experiences with camping.
He told Reki all about camping with his parents when he was younger. Reki couldn’t help but be enthralled by Langa’s joy as he retold stories. There was a time when he’d gotten lost, a time he’d accidentally burnt himself and had to have absolutely everything spoon fed to him, and even a time where someone else in a campsite they stayed out encountered a bear poking through their tent.
There was a hint of sadness to it too. All of the stories involved his father in some way, but he was gone forever now. Reki couldn’t help but feel inadequate. How could he make up for what Oliver’s absence was doing to Langa in a situation like this?
It was then that Nanako started cooking dinner. She’d gotten chicken noodle soup. Reki hadn’t tried it before, and it was strangely filling. He found himself unexpectedly full after just one small bowl.
Langa being Langa, had several bowls. Even then, he didn’t seem to be full, and felt fully ready to eat s’mores.
Nanako took out several long, thin sticks. Then, she retrieved three packs. One was filled with chocolates. Another was filled with marshmallows. The other was filled with dark colored rectangles that looked somewhat like cardboard. Although, Reki had been reassured by Langa that it was a sort of sweet cracker.
The marshmallows were impaled on the sticks and held into the fire. Reki hesitated before sticking his in, opting to see how much Langa and Nanako cooked theirs. Unfortunately, they cooked theirs to different temperatures. Nanako stuck hers in for mere seconds while Langa kept his in for longer, allowing parts of the marshmallow to scorch.
Then, they sandwiched the marshmallows between two pieces of sweet cracker and a piece of chocolate before pulling the marshmallows off the sticks and putting them in the paper plates that they had brought along.
Reki nervously stuck his marshmallow in before pulling it back after two seconds. Langa was about to eat his own s’more before he put it down and scooted closer to Reki.
“Here, let me help you.” He said, grasping Reki’s hands within his own. In contrast to the somewhat cool evening, his hands were warm. They gently guided Reki’s, and he kept the marshmallow in for a few more seconds before pulling it out.
“There, that’ll be better.” Langa said. Then, he helped sandwich the marshmallow and chocolate before pulling it off the stick.
“It’s like a sandwich, or burger, but sweet.” Langa said. He looked at Reki expectantly.
“What is it?” Reki asked quietly.
“I want to see how you like it.” Langa replied. Reki nervously lifted the s’more towards his mouth before taking a bite out of it.
The first thing he picked up was the crunch of the cracker, and its mild sweetness. Then, the sweetness was overtaken by the sugary marshmallow before being accentuated by the mildly savoury chocolate. The chocolate was cooler than the marshmallow, but just as goey.
By the time the meal was over, it was dark. Both Reki and Langa wanted to have several extra s’mores, but Nanako advised saving marshmallows for the coming couple of nights. Then, she gathered all the paper plates in a trash bag.
Nanako and Langa worked together to snuff out the fire before waiting to fully ensure that it wasn’t going to catch anything. Then, Nanako crawled into her tent, and wished the boys goodnight.
Reki was staring up at the stars from a lying position on the ground.
He’d never seen so many of them in the night sky before. There were no big cities or towns for miles around, so light pollution was low.
“Enjoying this?” Langa asked.
“Yeah.” Reki said. He was, although, he was still somewhat dissatisfied.
Langa lay down next to Reki and stared up at the stars with him.
“My dad used to tell me all about the constellations. But, if I’m being honest, I’ve long since forgotten all of them.” Langa admitted sadly.
“Well, they’re just connected dots. And there’s plenty of dots up there. Let’s make our own?” Reki suggested. He looked over at Langa. He could swear his eyes were just barely shimmering in the starlight that poured down from the heavens.
Reki tried to create constellations, but, he had to admit he wasn’t that good at it. Langa gave him suggestions though, and they were able to connect a few of them together.
Langa’s laugh, his smile, his input. Reki valued all of them so, so deeply. He scooted just barely closer to Langa.
But, Langa noticed him doing so.
“Are you cold?” Langa asked, sitting up and setting himself right up against Reki.
The night was cool, but Reki wasn’t exactly cold. What was Langa thinking of? There was no fire to keep the two warm. Then, it occurred to Reki.
“Yes, a little.” Reki lied.
Langa sat criss crossed behind Reki before putting his hands on Reki’s waist. Reki felt Langa pulling him up. Reki followed his lead, and found himself sitting in Langa’s lap. Langa’s arms then wrapped around Reki and pulled him as close to his chest as possible.
Reki certainly felt warmer, especially in his face, where he felt uncomfortably hot.
“Is that better?” Langa asked in a whisper, his face mere inches from Reki’s ear.
“Yeah.” Reki replied, leaning forward and using the support of Langa’s arms to keep him from slouching over.
“I like this.” Reki said.
“Good. I’m glad to hear it.” Langa replied.
Reki was certainly happy to be this physically close to Langa. But, he couldn’t fight something within him. He wanted, more? But he was already getting so much. No, he definitely needed even more.
He put his hands against the grassy ground and pushed himself up. Langa released him from his grasp and tilted his head curiously.
Reki stood up, turned around, and began sitting back down in Langa’s lap. Only this time, he was facing Langa, and his thighs were pressed up below Langa’s ribs. Langa’s face was bright red, but color was difficult to see in the darkness around them. The only colors were the blue tint of the sky and the color variations within the stars themselves.
“Now, we can be closer.” Reki said, wrapping his arms around Langa and pulling himself towards his chest. He felt Langa’s hands placed upon his back, helping him get closer. He could faintly feel Langa’s warm breath on the back of his neck, and he fought the impulse to shudder each time.
“Reki. You know, most friends don’t do this.” Langa said.
“Yeah, I think you’re right.” Reki realized. He’d had friends before, but none of them were like this. He would never have even considered this. But with Langa, he hungered for physical closeness, even when he was pressed up against him.
“Do you think… we’re more than just friends?” Langa asked in a whispered tone.
“What do you mean?” Reki wondered, needing clarification.
“Like. Boyfriends?” Langa suggested. Reki’s eyes went wide. Could they be boyfriends? Then, he’d get to hold Langa’s hand and cuddle with him and kiss him and…
“Yes.” Reki said. While he couldn’t see it, Langa was beaming brightly.
“You… you really mean it. You… want to be my boyfriend?” Langa repeated, phrasing the question more clearly.
“Absolutely.” Reki replied, cementing his affirmation.
“Umm, I know that I’m asking a lot right now. But do you want to... kiss?” Langa asked.
“Yes! How did you know that I wanted to?” Reki wondered.
“I didn’t. I-I just wanted to kiss you, Reki.” Langa stammered.
“I want to kiss you too.” Reki said. Reki pushed himself away from Langa’s shoulder, so he could stare into his blue, sapphire-like eyes. He could savour every bit of Langa’s beauty. His smooth skin, his pale blue hair, his vibrant blue eyes, and his soft, subtle expressions.
Reki felt Langa’s hands on the back of his neck. They were slightly sweaty, and Reki could feel them trembling too.
“What’s wrong?” Reki asked.
“Nothing, just… I didn’t think this conversation would get here, and I really like that it did.” Langa said, a wide, goofy smile on his face. Reki beamed. Langa often smiled softly, but this was far more rare. Reki remembered it from the first time he’d landed an ollie.
Then, Langa pulled Reki’s head closer, and their lips touched. Langa’s lips were soft, and his face was warm. Everything about him was so, so warm. On a cool night like this, he could more easily appreciate it.
Reki was certainly surprised when he felt Langa’s tongue knocking on his lower lip. He wanted to come in, and Reki opened the door.
Their tongues met and mingled and danced. Reki had never felt so warm in his life, and yet he wasn’t even remotely uncomfortable. Then, Langa pulled away, and Reki hadn’t realized how out of breath he was.
“Again?” Langa asked between panting.
“Yes.” Reki replied confidently. Langa rapidly leaned in and resumed the kiss. Reki didn’t notice as gradually leaned back, and Langa’s legs relaxed from the criss cross position.
Reki felt Langa’s full weight on top of him, and his body relaxed. His hands began gently brushing down Langa’s back more and more. Reki could see both the undisturbed starscape above as well as Langa’s face. It wasn’t hard for him to decide which of the two was more beautiful and captivating.
The two pulled away for a moment, taking the time to breathe. Reki leaned his head back against Langa’s hands, and he could feel Langa curling some of his hair around his finger.
“Again?” Langa asked.
“Yes.” Reki answered.
And so they continued. Reki’s hands made it past Langa’s lower back, and they grasped tightly. Langa’s entire body tensed for a brief moment, before relaxing quickly. Almost as if in response, Langa gently bit Reki’s lower lip and he rapidly inhaled, shocked by the sudden movement.
He gladly returned the favor, and Langa quietly groaned in delight. Langa bit again, this time harder, but it was still gentle and loving.
Then, Langa pulled himself away.
“Are you okay with that?” Langa asked. Reki smiled.
“Could you do it more?” Reki asked. Langa nodded. He pulled Langa’s face towards him.
Reki’s hand made it to Langa’s thighs and grasped for dear life. Reki felt Langa scrape his lower teeth along Reki’s upper lip. Then, he did it again, and again, with more and more strength each time. Reki’s response grew more and more drastic in response. He would groan and tense before relaxing once again.
Reki’s hands navigated back up Langa’s thighs. They made it to the edge of his shirt and underneath it, reveling in the texture of Langa’s smooth skin. Then, his hands began peeling the shirt away to rev-
“I don’t mean to spoil your fun but I’m trying to sleep!” Nanako shouted. Langa and Reki froze and their eyes flew over to Nanako’s tent. Her face was poking out of the front flap.
Langa pulled away and stood up.
“Sorry!” Reki shouted, his face bright red. Nanako rolled her eyes.
“I can’t believe I didn’t expect this.” Nanako muttered, her palm pressed firmly against her forehead.
Reki slowly stood up and began walking towards his tent. Langa changed his course and began walking towards it as well.
“Oh no you don’t! I know that if you share a tent you’ll try to be subtle, it won’t work, and I won’t sleep. You can do that stuff some other time, but not right now, understood?!” Nanako asked firmly.
Langa nodded profusely and began walking towards his own tent. Reki nodded too, although Nanako was directing more of her focus towards Langa.
She breathed a sigh of relief before retreating back into her tent, regretful that one cannot unsee things they have already perceived.
Reki and Langa gradually drifted off to sleep, the thrill of the shared moment gradually wearing off. Reki would never admit it out loud, especially in front of Nanako, but he couldn’t wait for “some other time” to finally arrive.
In the meantime, he would enjoy being with Langa, and sharing less… intimate moments with him. Regardless of how he spent this camping trip, he knew he’d enjoy it, as long as he was with Langa.
