Ruby Red

Notes:

Hey! I decided to write a one-shot!
This takes place about a week or two before Sangria
You can read this as a stand-alone one-shot, but things will make a bit more sense if you read Sangria first!

Work Text:

Wels looked at his palms, eyes drawn to the callouses where his hand was almost always on his sword. The sword that Hels made. Wels didn’t know why he kept it, after what happened. He shuddered. He quickly looked at his new squire, a small draconian avian named Impulse. Wels found Impulse in an alleyway, wing torn and cuts littering his arms. Wels could tell that Impulse was a fighter, as there were a few rope marks and burns on his arms. When Impulse saw Wels approaching, he tried to move his wings to make a shield around him, but he couldn’t. After a bit of confusion, Wels convinced Impulse to be his squire. Yes, Impulse wasn’t of noble blood, but Wels was never one to care about the common way to do things.

Wels was thinking about this, when he heard screams. Wels looked over to the stables, and saw Impulse flying over, looking panicked.

“Sire, someone is here.”

Wels nodded.

“Impulse, go inside the castle.” Wels said.

“But-”

“Just go!”

Impulse took off, but before he could get very far, he fell out of the sky as an arrow peirced his leathery wings. He fell to the ground, and Wels watched as Hels revealed himself, his fiery red eyes glowing. Wels rushed forward, hoping to catch his brother by surprise, but Hels blocked Wels’ sword with his own. They locked eyes, blue meeting red. The sound of the swords rang in their ears, as the swords locked again. Wels looked for a weakness in Hels’ fighting and, fourtunately, found one. He swung at his side, and struck a heavy blow on his chainmail armor. Hels fell to the ground and crimson blood spilled from his side. He clutched it and got up.

“You, my brother are strong, but I will come back stronger.” Hels said, and he threw an rare ender pearl. The whooshing sound of the teleportation was heard, and Wels rushed to Impulse, still on the ground. Wels rummaged in his bag, and grabbed a healing potion. He poured it on the wing, but instead of closing up as it should, it stayed open. Wels poured a bit more on, but it didn’t do anything. Hels must have created a tipped arrow, covered in poison. Impulse flinched, and Wels held his arm.

“It’ll be okay. Let’s get you to the medic.”

Impulse got up, his whole body shaking. He walked slowly, almost dizzy from blood loss. A trail of burgundy blood drying in the dirt followed them through the courtyard.

The dull clank of Wels’ armor echoed in the air, almost creating music. Impulse looked like death, his normal dark tan skin a ghostly white. After a bit of walking they got to the medic, and they started to fix Impulse’s wing. The door swung open, and False came in.

“What in the name of Notch happened?” False said, slightly confused at the sight before her.

“Hels happened.” Wels replied, looking at the ground.

False nodded, and looked at Impulse, who had gone to sleep. His wing looked better already, the hole much smaller than just minutes earlier.

“I’m assuming that Hels got away, based on your expression.” False stated, and Wels nodded.

“He did, but that’s not the concerning part.”

“Your murderous brother coming and attacking you and your squire isn’t concerning?”

“False, he had an ender pearl.”

“How!? The only portal in the world is in the palace!”

“That’s what I’m confused and concerned about, False.”

False nodded, and looked at her sword. Almost all of the swords in the kingdom were made by Hels.

“What if it has to do with it our swords?”

“I don’t think that is the thing, but we can never be careful enough.”

False nodded, and watched as Impulse started to stir.

“I just hope it takes him a while to recover.”
