Rin was used to nightmares; to waking up in a cold sweat and wishing she had someone to help calm her down. But this dream was certainly... different.
She was lying down in a field, except the ground was bouncy and orange. She experimentally placed her hand on it and pushed her nails in, they broke the surface easily and she brought up a large scoop of jello. Rin couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it.
She carefully stood up, the jiggling below her feet threatening to topple her down at any second. But once she found her bearings she took a tiny leap forward and landed on her feet instead of her ass, which she considered a small victory. She jumped up and down in place a little, giggling a bit more after every increasing bounce.
She had never had a dream this joyous. The only thing she thought would make it better was if someone was here to play with her. To keep her company.
She was like a worry free kid again, frolicking through a meadow of fruity gelatinous dessert. It was utterly ridiculous, but a welcome respite from her usual night terrors.
She did eventually lose her balance, falling and landing flat on her face. Luckily the jello gave her a slightly less harsh place to land than regular dirt would have.
She didn’t bother getting up, only nuzzled her face into the softness below her. It smelt fantastic, fresh and citrusy. It reminded her of the jello Tohru had brought her while she was still in the hospital. While Rin would find it difficult to admit to Tohru’s face without turning red, it was the best jello she had ever had.
Rin licked and nibbled the jello floor, appreciating the sweet flavour it left on her tongue. It was blissful to bury her head in the scent.
It wasn’t long till she began to hear a few noises coming from someone else; she turned her head around to see if anyone had materialised into her dream world, but there was no one.
“Isuzu-san?”
Rin heard a voice now, clear as day. It was high pitched but gentle, reminding her of Tohru.
“Isuzu-san?”
Rin groggily opened her eyes now, fading out of her strange but lovely dream. As she adjusted to the light piercing through the closed curtains she noticed the position she was in.
Her face was resting on top of Tohru’s chest, the other girl's neck and clavicle covered in Rin’s saliva. Tohru’s hair gave off the same citrus scent as her jello. What Rin had been burying her face into wasn’t some imaginary land of sweets, but Tohru.
The two girls locked eyes, both flustered beyond belief.
Rin quickly jolted up and turned away, “I'm sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Tohru’s voice squeaked.
Rin cursed under her breath and covered her face with her hands. She was immensely embarrassed for herself, but even worse she had put Tohru into such an uncomfortable position, “I’m so so sorry,” she repeated.
“It’s alright really,” Tohru reinforced.
“No, it’s not, stop brushing it off. I did that to you in your sleep, that’s practically the definition of awful,” Rin retorted.
“You were in your sleep too, it was just a mistake!”
Rin looked over to the clock on the bedside table. It was still too early for either of them to stay up, they could still squeeze in another few hours of sleep, “I’ll sleep on the floor till the alarm goes off,” Rin stood up and grabbed her pillow, ready to fashion a makeshift bed.
“No,” Tohru grabbed Rin’s wrist, “I can’t let you do that! You’ve been in and out of the hospital, you need to get proper rest!”
Rin didn’t seem to be listening as she put the pillow under her arm and grabbed the blanket from the top layer, leaving the comforter and sheets behind for Tohru.
Tohru mumbled her next reply, “It wasn’t so bad.”
“What?” Rin asked.
“It wasn’t so bad, it was kind of nice,” Tohru blushed.
Rin was caught off guard.
“I understand if you’re embarrassed, but I'm not upset at you and it didn’t feel... bad, at all. It was… nice,” Tohru looked away as if she couldn’t believe what she was saying, “Please stay in bed, Isuzu-san.”
Rin sighed and gave in, slowly putting the pillow and blanket back to their original positions. She slid in between the sheet again and lay on her side, facing Tohru, “Are you sure?” She asked.
“Positive,” Tohru replied.
They lay in silence for a minute or two.
“Tohru?” Rin began to ask.
“Mhm?”
“Can I rest my head against you again?”
Tohru’s mouth parted into a perplexed “o” shape.
“Like... this?” Rin asked and moved so that their bodies were right next to each other, her head resting against Tohru’s shoulder. She looked up, prepared to move away the second Tohru asked or indicated any sign of discomfort.
But Tohru didn't, she cuddled right up to her, “That’s perfectly fine.”
They spent the rest of the night like that; and when drifting back to sleep, Rin was relieved to see no nightmare was awaiting her.
