The car thrums under them as each of them sit with the words: next time. When would that be? Shouyou would leave for Brazil in eight days; Tobio would follow suit, though only for as long as the Olympics were. Then the Japan leagues would get busy, and college would get harder, and job-searching season would rev its nasty engine and tailgate Tadashi at every street until he finally did something about it.
There’s always anticipation in the words next time, but there is also always uncertainty. Tadashi has never been sure whether to believe in these sorts of future promises.

She respects him, too, or at least understands him. He can tell from the worried glance she gives him before the mock trial on his dad’s death anniversary, and from the way she goes all out on him during the trial regardless. From the way she asks him to be her witness for her plagiarism case, knowing that he’ll agree if at least to have that leverage in the future. That sort of fucked-up understanding. He appreciates it more often than not.

Summary
Atsumu is a series of walking contradictions. He is both rude and kind. Reckless and hesitant. Confident and insecure. He is, by all sense of the term, antithetical to Kita, who prides himself in being a steady constant despite shifting tides around him.
Most likely, Kita will never understand people like him. But watching Atsumu fearlessly storm the court stirs something deep in the pits of Kita’s stomach. Like learning how to swim in uncharted territory for the first time—terrifying, at first. But exhilarating.
