Chapter 1: Secret

Chapter Text

He knew the secret was going to be out the moment that he started to lose consciousness.

1. Avoid hospitals (unless it’s minor injury).
2. Don’t allow full check ups (specially not at UA).
3. Don’t allow them to contact mom.

Izuku started to recite the rules in his head as his eyes started to feel heavy and his head started to hurt.

“Oi, Deku. Don’t pass out, we’re almost there.”

Kacchan’s voice sounded harsh. Mad. Izuku fail to say if he was mad at him for getting injured and fucking up the exam or at the person who was carrying him for not going faster to get to Recovery Girl. Izuku didn’t care either, he had other things, more important things, to care about at the moment.

1. Avoid hospitals-

He shifted his weight so that he could escape the stretcher by falling of the edge. Maybe, if he could stand up, they could take him back to the dorm to rest and this nightmare would be over.

“Deku-kun, stop moving, the wound-“

“I’m fine-“ He tried to say but his voice was thin and his lungs hurt. But what else was new, right?

Still, he tried to get up.

No hospitals. No check ups. No mom.
No hospitals. No check ups. No mom.

He needed to stand up-

His motion was interrupted by a hand closing around his wrist and then another pushing him to lay down again. The scent of sweat so familiar and intoxicating. He tried to hold his breath.

4. Don’t cough in front of people.

“The fuck you think you’re doing. Stay the fuck down.”

“Bakugou stop swearing.” Aizawa scolded him.

His eyelids were so heavy. Izuku couldn’t make them stay open. He started to hear concern voices around him. Uraraka on the verge of tears asking him to stay awake, Iida reciting the protocols, Todoroki just calling his name, Aizawa calling All might because he couldn’t deal with all the children…

And, in the middle of the chaos, a firm hand holding his.

Then, it all went black.

—————————

When he opened his eyes, he found Uraraka, Iida, and Todoroki sitting on the corner of the hospital room, whispering, while looking at something on Iida's phone.

He tried to speak but his throat was sore. Instead, some kind of sound came out and, almost instantly, the other three turned to look at him.

"Deku-kun,"

"Hey," He forced himself to answer, almost coughing up in the process.

"I'll go get Aizawa." Todoroki said before exiting the room. Tone even colder than normal tainting his voice.

Iida fixed his glasses before crossing his arms over his chest.

"Forgive him, Midoriya. He's just worried."

"We all are." Uraraka said.

Uncomfortable silence.

Izuku couldn't bring himself to ask whether they knew or they didn't. But given the fact that this wasn't the first time he had landed himself of the hospital, but it was the first time thay he had woken up to all his friends right beside him as if he were dying-

No. Not as if he were dying. He was dying. There was no 'if' about it.

Aizawa entered the room, followed by All might and Todoroki. Izuku didn't know what hurt the most to see, the anger on their faces or the dissapointment.

"Just what were you thinking?"

"Shouta, Young Midoriya has been through a lot-" All might tried to say but Aizawa continued his speech.

"The moment you found the first petal you should've come to me or any other adult for that matter."

" I was handling it, I didn’t want to worry everyone-“

“ Well, it appears you did just that.”

Izuku looked down then, embarrassed. He knew it had been selfish but he also couldn’t bring himself to regret the choice he made. And maybe he wanted to say something, but what could he say? That he thought that if he kept ignoring it then the problem didn’t actually exist? That he didn’t want for people to know just how desperate he was, even though he did absolutely nothing to hide it on a daily basis? That he thought that life sucked because first the universe had made him quirkless and then it punished him for being in love? Instead he said nothing.

He could hear loud angry whispers from the other side of the door. Back and forth, Izuku couldn’t understand what they were saying. Not until he heard his voice.

“I don’t care.” He hissed.

“But Sensei said-“

“Kirishima, move out of my way or I’ll blast you out of it.”

And the door opened revealing a very angry boy with wild blond hair and a perfect frown adorning his features.

“Bakugou, I thought I’ve made myself clear that you had to go to the dorms and stay there.”

But Kacchan’s eyes hadn’t left Izuku’s since the door had opened, not even to acknowledge the man’s words.

“You’re awake.” The boy said flatly to which he could only nod in return.

Kacchan crossed the room with his frown still in place, took some kind of sheet that was on laying the table where his three friends had been before, and almost threw it over Izuku’s head with a pen.

“Sign it.”

He blinked at him.

“What is it?” He asked confused as he tried to read what it said. Kacchan rapidly grabbed the sheet, pointing to the little X on the end of it.

“It doesn’t matter. Sign it

“That’s not how it works, Young Bakugou. He has to be fully aware of the terms for it to be taken into account.”

What…? Oh.

Oh.

“Is it the surgery?” He asked softly.

Izuku knewthis would happen.

“It is.” Uraraka’s voice said. “Although we were waiting for the right time to talk to you about it-“

“As soon as possible is the ‘right time’, Round cheeks.” The boy cut her off before turning again to look at him. His severe red eyes finding his green ones. “ Sign. It..”

“I want to talk about my options first.”

He could see patience rapidly abandoning Kacchan as his frown seemed to deepen. It was possible to almost feel the heat starting to radiate off of his palms, not quite exploding yet but almost.

What?”

“Kaminari, Kirishima, take Bakugou away from here.” Aizawa’s voice sounded calm but Izuku could tell that he was only trying not to stress Kacchan more than he already was.

“I ain’t going fucking nowhere until this dumbfuck agrees-“

“Young Bakugou I think it’s better if-“

No.“ Kacchan snarled before focusing on Izuku again. Fire in his eyes, that amazing determination that he always had just…emanating off of him. He had to hold his breath not to cough just from the sight of him. “They haven’t contacted your mom yet. If you sign it, then maybe she’s not gonna die from the news alone. Fucking sign it and let’s be done with this shit.”

Silence.

His eyes were still locked with Kacchan’s.

He had thought about this. This situation was exactly why he hadn’t want anyone to know. But, well, there was no fixing it, he could only tell them and wait for the yelling.

“I’m not getting the surgery. I don’t want it.”

“Midoriya, let’s wait until you talk with the doctors-“

“No. I don’t want it. I want to discuss my life expectancy given the situation and how much time I’ve spent coughing already.” He answered.

He needed to know how much time he had left, It was important to find a successor for One for All (and train them). His choice was obvious but he still needed to discuss it with All might. Maybe he would prefer Mirio instead.

Iida, Todoroki and Uraraka didn’t seem surprise at all. Probably because they figured that if Izuku had hidden it for so long it was for a reason… Their faces weren’t less hurt and sad despite the lack of surprise though.

Kacchan was a whole other story though. And ,of course, Kirishima and Kaminari looked liked they were scared that their friend would murder Izuku right there in front of everyone.

“Deku. I’m not fucking repeating myself.”

“Good, ‘cause I don’t want you to.”

Silence, again.

Kacchan looked up before taking a deep breath, probably gathering patience to stop himself from exploding Izuku’s head in a billion pieces.

“Whatever. Die. See if I care.” He said before turning away to exit the room. ‘Don’t cough now. Don’t. Cough.’“You’re explaining this to Auntie.”

——————————

Laying on the hospital bed, Izuku looked at the ceiling. He couldn’t sleep. He just couldn’t stop thinking.

‘Give it or take, three to four months.’

The words of Recovery Girl resonated inside of his head.

It wasn’t a lot but it was something. Given the fact that Izuku had spent the last eight months coughing petals he thought that he would had less time. This was good though.

Four months to get everything in order.

Four months to train Kacchan.

Four months to say goodbye to everyone.

Four months to say goodbye to him.

And that was the whole problem, wasn’t it? Because Izuku never could say goodbye to Kacchan. Not really. And now he had to.

At least I’ll die being myself.

Because Izuku wouldn’t be Izuku if he weren’t in love with Kacchan. He’d rather die than stop loving him. Quite literally.
