Chapter Text
“Have a good day Weiss, remember to be respectful to your teachers and do try and make some friends.” The tall silver haired woman said, reaching down to hug a smaller copy of herself.
The girl in question grasped the edge of her dress nervously, “Do I have to go? I want to stay with you Mom.”
“Weiss, honey, it's your first day of school, you will be just fine. It might be frightening now, but before you know it you’ll be looking forward to coming and seeing your friends every day.” Weiss’s mother said with a smile.
Weiss rubbed at her eyes, sniffling slightly as she bid her mother farewell. After watching the sleek black town car pull out of sight, Weiss began to walk towards the doors. The school was, at first glance, an ordinary elementary school in a suburban town. However the school was considered one of, if not the best school in Vale, her parents had moved from Atlas so she could attend.
“Ommphf!”
Weiss looked over to a girl laying flat on her face. The girl, Weiss determined, was the source of the distressed grunt.
“Um, are you ok?” Weiss said as she walked over to the girl in the red hood.
*Sniff* “Mhmm, Mm’okay.” Slowly the girl got up onto her feet, she had a small scrape on her elbow and Weiss could tell she was doing her best to hold in her tears. Weiss stepped forward and took hold of her hand.
“Come on, I’ll walk with you and we can get you a band-aid.”
Weiss walked the young girl to the nearest classroom, the teacher coming to their side shortly upon seeing the nearly crying girl.
“She fell and scraped her elbow.” Weiss informed the adult all the while the girl held on tight to her hand.
After the teacher bandaged her up Weiss realized that this was not her classroom and needed to find it soon. She made to leave but was stopped by the redhead tugging at her sleeve.
“Thank you for walking with me after I fell.” She said bashfully, fiddling with the hem of her skirt. “My name’s Ruby.”
“You’re welcome Ruby, I’m Weiss and I need to go to my classroom now.”
“Wait!!”
Weiss was startled by the sudden outburst.
“Yes?”
Ruby kicked the ground before her and scratched her neck sheepishly.
“Do you want to be my friend?”
Weiss smiled, her mother did tell her to try and make friends.
“Sure Ruby I’d like to be your friend. Ok I need to go now but maybe we can play together at recess.”
_____
When the recess bell rang Weiss went out in search of her new friend. The start of classes had herself and the rest of class introducing themselves, and while she had talked to her tablemates, she was looking forward to seeing her first friend.
“Weisssssss!” She could hear the droning of her name drawing closer as Ruby ran up to her.
“You came to play!” Ruby said excitedly upon falling in step next to the silver haired girl.
Weiss gave a playful shove to Ruby’s shoulder. “Well I did say we could play at recess right? Besides, I didn’t really make any more friends in my class yet so I wanted to see you.” Weiss stopped and after a moment Ruby stopped to face her. “You’re actually my first friend like, ever, Ruby.”
Upon hearing this fact Ruby jumped up before grabbing Weiss’s hands. “Ohhh yeah, we’re gonna be best friends!” She declared, bringing a smile to her face.
“I thought I was your best friend baby sis.” Someone said with a gasp.
Weiss recognized her as the blonde girl from her class.
“Yaaaannnngggg we can all be best friends! Weiss this is my big sister Yang, Yang this is Weiss she helped me this morning after you ditched me!.” Ruby said with a pout.
Yang tousled Ruby’s hair. “Rubes, I walked you to right outside your building, what do you mean ditched you?”
Weiss giggled, “She fell down and I had to walk her to a classroom. But Ruby, I thought we were the same age?”
Ruby shook her head. “Uh-uh, I’m pre-k so I’m a year younger.”
Yang broke up the conversation by wrapping her arms around the pair.
“Anyway, thanks for helping my sister Weiss, we can all be besties!”
“Yeah! We’re gonna be BFF’s and rule number one of being besties is that we'll always look out for each other!”
“Well said Ruby-roo.”
Weiss wiggled out of the side hug and smiled at the two sisters. Her first day of school was going well so far.
Beside her Ruby giggled, “If anyone comes up with more rules we’ll follow those too.” She said before grabbing Weiss’s hand. “Come on, let’s go play!”
_______
The final bell for the day rang and Weiss found herself walking with Yang to the buildings she met Ruby at. She saw the brunette standing in the hallway outside the classroom she had brought her too earlier that morning.
“Ruby!”
Ruby’s head shot up upon hearing her call out her name.
“Hi Weiss, hey Yang. What time is mom coming to pick us up Yang?”
“Pretty soon but we can hang out with Weiss till then.”
Weiss nodded as the trio fell into stride with one another talking as they walked toward the parking lot. “My mom’s coming soon too so until she gets here.”
Weiss stood with the sisters at the curb talking about anything and everything. The two seemed to have the ability to talk about the most mundane things as if they were miracles performed by the gods. After a few minutes of this she saw her mothers car pull up.
“I have to go guys, but I’ll see you tomorrow?” Weiss asked hopefully as she opened the car door.
Ruby and Yang nodded in unison, “Yeah of course! Rule number two of being besties is we hang out anytime we can!”
“Okay, bye Ruby, bye Yang.” She said with a wave before entering the vehicle.
“Bye Weiss! See you tomorrow.” Ruby called out as Yang merely waved her goodbye.
“How was your day sweetie? It would seem as if you made some friends.” The older ivory haired woman asks her daughter.
Weiss lets out a long sigh, “It was good, tiring, but good. The blonde one is Yang and the other one is her little sister Ruby. They said we were going to be best friends.”
Her mother simply smiled at the comment. “Isn't that nice sweetheart.”
The next morning when her mother dropped her off Weiss was not dreading it at all, not when she knew she had two energetic girls to spend her time with. Hopping out of the car it took her no time at all to spot Yang’s brilliant blonde hair. Spotting her as well the sisters waved over at her, Ruby called out a ‘Hey Weiss!’ as she approached the pair.
“Good morning guys.” Weiss said with a smile, the moment she got to Ruby the younger girl wrapped her arms around her in a hug, catching Weiss off guard.
“Weiss! My bestie!”
“Are hugs a normal thing for friends?” Weiss asked with confusion, slowly wrapping her arms around Ruby as well..
Yang chuckled, “It’s normal for friends, but even more so with Ruby. She’s a little cuddlebug.”
Ruby pouted, “Weiss likes the hug. Right Weiss?”
“The hug is nice Ruby. I haven’t had a hug in a while.”
Ruby looked at Weiss with surprise. “Awwwwh, don’t worry Weiss, if you need a hug I’ll give you one!”
“Thanks Ruby, I’ll be sure to ask you if I need one.”
Ruby grinned a thousand megawatt smile, “Anytime Weiss, rule number one is taking care of each other after all!”
