stuck in the dark

Summary:

Chanhee and Sunwoo are stuck in the dark. Not figuratively- literally.

Notes:

Hi! I don't have much to say regarding this story other than the fact that I wrote this when my power went out one day and I had nothing to do lmao.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"Hey Kim Sunwoo!" Chanhee starts as he stomps around his shared apartment, searching for the culprit who left his dirty socks on the living room floor. "Pick up your filthy socks! We live in an apartment, not a landfill!"

Instead of going straight to the living room, Sunwoo springs up from his bed and rushes to flick off the lights, hiding with his back pressed against the wall next to the door frame. Eyes wavering, he momentarily debates whether or not it's a good idea to anger Chanhee any further, but decides he's already in trouble for not responding immediately to the latter's request (or demand, he doesn't really know).

Chanhee, who hasn't moved from his spot in front of Sunwoo's socks, brings his thumb and index finger up to pinch his nose bridge. Deeply inhaling, Chanhee rests his arms by his sides and balls them into fists, preparing to berate Sunwoo again. "One more time you rascal, pick up your damn socks or you're never going to see the light of day again!"

Not fazed at all by Chanhee's frustrate nagging and lame insult, Sunwoo snorts and adds a little "Oh no, I'm so scared" to mock him.

Chanhee, on the other hand, grits his teeth and blows his bangs out of his eyes. He makes his way towards Sunwoo's room, every step containing more and more annoyance as he walks. At this point, Sunwoo mentally admits he might be a little scared, but there was no way he would actually say it out loud. He's sure Chanhee already has one foot in his vicinity but he's too busy closing his eyes to confirm that thought. The apartment stays silent for a brief moment and Chanhee swears he can hear Sunwoo's accelerating heartbeat from inches away. And to think they were making such a big deal out of a pair of socks.

Chanhee moves his body slowly, determined to frighten Sunwoo and get his revenge. As soon as he's fully in the room, Chanhee pushes both his hands towards Sunwoo's shoulders and yells out "boo!" as loud as he can. Sunwoo lets out an ear-piercing scream and backs away from Chanhee in retreat, signaling to stop with both palms facing out in front of him. Sunwoo's eyebrows are scrunched in fear as he continually mumbles incoherent words in an effort to calm himself down. Chanhee has a challenging time deciphering Sunwoo's facial expressions due to the lights still being off, so he flicks the light switch up and the light bulbs shine above them. Sunwoo sighs in relief and Chanhee laughs with his whole body, hands on his knees to keep himself balanced.

Before either person can say anything, the ceiling lights flicker and shut off on their own, leaving the pair in the darkness again. Sunwoo begins to whine and searches for Chanhee by feeling the air around him.

"Hyung, that's not funny. Turn on the lights please." Chanhee is just as perplexed as Sunwoo this time, pushing the light switch up and down but receiving no response.

"Uh Sunwoo, not exactly sure how to say this, but the lights won't turn on."

"What?"

"I said the lights won't turn on."

Sunwoo whines for the second time, not appreciating what seems like Chanhee's next trick.

"Oh really? I had no idea." Sunwoo retorts in mock innocence. He gravitates towards Chanhee's direction. "But seriously, why won't it turn on?"

Chanhee steps out of Sunwoos room (at least he thinks he does- he can't see) and notices that the rest of the lights had also cut off. "Well, it appears we have experienced a power outage. It's only eight pm and it's still too early to sleep so we just wait it out, I guess."

"What do you mean, 'wait it out'?" Chanhee rolls his eyes as he barks back, "Why do you have to question everything I say? I said what I said, asshole." There wasn't any real menace in his voice (the older male was just being hot-headed) and Sunwoo knew his questions were pretty useless anyway; he was constantly asking them to distract himself from thinking about the darkness.

Sunwoo raises his arms as if to surrender (even if no one could see him do so). "Okay okay, I get it. But does that mean we have to stay here?"

"I don't care, I'm not your mom- but there isn't anything else to do, really. We should save our phone battery in case of an emergency." Chanhee rolls his eyes again and recounts what his best friend Younghoon told him once ("You know, Chanhee, if you keep rolling your eyes they're going to stay there and you'll have to look up for the rest of your life" "Shut up, Hoon").

Sunwoo wanders around his room, knowing it well enough to successfully make it to his bed where he planned to reside until the power came back on. He sat quietly, limiting his movements as if someone would attack him if he moved.

"Hey Sun, can I join you? I'm cold and I can't stand sitting on the floor."

No answer.

"Sunwoo? Sunwoo? You better not be sleeping already, you brat."

All Chanhee got in response was heavy breathing coming from Sunwoo's direction. "You good? Are you-" Chanhee paused mid-sentence and his mouth formed an 'o' shape in realization. "I'll be right back, okay? Gonna grab my phone and try to find a flashlight. You'll be fine, right?"

"Y-yeah, just fine hyung." Sunwoo internally celebrated being able to mutter out a decent sentence. Chanhee nodded in understanding and carefully sprinted out of Sunwoo's room to retrieve the necessary items.

When he reached the living room, Chanhee felt around the coffee table to pick up his phone, Sunwoo's phone, along with an electric lantern he'd always left on the table for decoration. Turning on the lantern so he could make his way back, Chanhee spotted a blue blanket that lay on the couch next to him. It was Christmas present he'd gifted to the younger male a few years back when they had just become roommates. Chanhee had bought the blanket with the idea that Sunwoo would replace it within the next couple months, but to his surprise, Sunwoo had brought it to bed with him every night. Often times when Chanhee would check on Sunwoo (he'd basically become the little brother Chanhee had always wanted), he would be sleeping peacefully while hugging the soft material close to his body.

Figuring it would bring him comfort, Chanhee picked up the blanket, threw it over his shoulder, and headed back to Sunwoo's bedroom.

"Hey, I'm back. I brought your blanket for you." Chanhee announced in a hushed whisper in case Sunwoo had fallen asleep. Now that there was some light in the room thanks to the lantern, Chanhee could see the latter sitting in the corner of his bed, knees pulled up to his chest and arms wrapped around his legs. The older approached Sunwoo and draped the blanket over his figure, noticing his subtle smile as he did so. Chanhee handed Sunwoo his phone and settled down in the spot next to him, taking some of the blanket to cover his exposed legs (to which Sunwoo stuck out his tongue in playful annoyance). Trying to limit their phone usage, the two boys sat in silence, Chanhee bringing a hand up to pat Sunwoo's knee and whispering words like "it's okay" and "I'm here, don't worry".

Only twenty minutes had passed but it felt like an hour. The more time that ticked by, the more bored and tired Chanhee and Sunwoo became. 11 o'clock rolled around and by then both males had fallen into deep slumber.

********************

Multiple loud beeping sounds awoke Chanhee, causing him to roll out of bed and into the kitchen. Pressing buttons on the microwave and oven to shut off the noise, Chanhee rubbed his tired eyes and looked around to notice that the lights were on and sunlight was filtering through the living room curtains. He trudged back to Sunwoo's room where the other was already pacing around while brushing his teeth.

"Don't brush your teeth out here. Back to the bathroom, Sun," Chanhee started as if he were scolding a young child, "and good morning".

"Mmm, 'mornin hyung." Sunwoo mumble back, toothbrush still in his mouth as he went back to the bathroom.

"Disgusting."

A couple minutes and Sunwoo was dragging Chanhee into the kitchen to cook breakfast for him. On the way there, the two passed through the living room, and that's when Chanhee remembered.

"Sunwoo please, and I beg you, pick up your freaking socks!"
