The mandatory Interlude

Summary:

Izuku's life being broadcasted on the TV had far reaching effects.

And not all of them were good.

Hawks and All-might stop a few criminals here and there. But something much more sinister grows in the background. And amidst this chaos, All-might finds his successor.

Notes:

Heya! Here's the next part of the series, yayy. This is mainly for building the base for the conflict I guess? This chapter is very dialogue-heavy and a bit all over the place for some reason. Hope that's alright!

Read on! (I'm not giving context anymore, if I should, please let me know!)

Chapter 1: Rebel

Chapter Text

Yagi Toshinori, a regular citizen of Japan, drops all the groceries he's been dragging for the last 30 minutes onto the counter. He coughs to draw attention of the young boy who is supposed to be the cashier but is only playing the role of a teenager too engrossed in a TV show right now.

"Oh," the lad says when he notices the tall but almost skeletal customer, "Sorry, sir. I- uh, just got a bit distracted."

Yagi smiles at the boy, "No worries there. I can understand why you're weren't focused. The current news is quite intriguing, I must admit."

The boy nods as he passes each product under the scanner, "Exactly. It's just, um, amazing to see the quirkless stand up in such huge numbers together."

Yagi hums, leaning one elbow against the glass top and looking out the store, "It's humbling if nothing else. And a wake up call for all of society."

The boy puts the last product into the bag and hands it to Yagi, "I agree. That will be 1300 yen."

Yagi pulls out the necessary bills and gives them to him, "That was a nice chat. Have a good day."

The cashier smiles, "You too, sir."

Yagi steps out and sighs, letting the smile drop from his face.

The quirkless are indeed doing great things but the whole revolution kind of has its drawbacks too. Just as all good things do. Cases of vandalism and public brutality have gone significantly higher in the last 2 weeks and Yagi can't seem to catch a break.

The blond man walks two blocks to enter his building's lobby, drops his groceries by the receptionist and hurries outside. Stopping by a narrow alleyway, he stops and transforms into his buffer, taller and healthier form. And then, he waits.

Soon enough, a man, much younger than Yagi- All-might- approaches him. Only, this man is flying. His red wings fold inwards as the person with gold eyes tries to cramp into the tiny space of the lane. Landing silently on his feet, the pro hero, Hawks, grins at the tall blond.

"Oh look here," he comments, pocketing his hands, "When my boss from the commission told me that I had to work with another pro-hero, I didn't think it'd be the no. 1 himself."

All might chuckles good-naturedly, "Then Hawks, I suggest you start getting used to the idea of working with me because this partnership won't be ending anytime soon."

Hawks rolls his eyes but he's serious now, All might can tell this by the way Hawk's smirk becomes subdued and an almost imperceptible frown takes refuge on his face.

"Yeah, that's right. You're briefed already? 'Cause I thought you just came to town recently."

All-might gives the young hero a bright grin, "Been here long enough to know about all the rebel movements going on. That show did what it did with good intentions but malicious people do exist everywhere. And really, we can't blame the quirkless people for being bitter about their treatment and now trying to taking revenge for it."

Hawks nods, "That's all fine, but point stands that they're crossing the law for this petty revenge. The business man who was killed last night deserved it because he underpaid his quirkless staff and fucking sanctioned three murders but just 'cause it wasn't death by a court sentence, these quirkless people who did the deed are criminals too. So-"

"So, we have to stop this." All might says, something heavy in his tone, "I know. And what about the missing cases?"

Hawks quirks an eyebrow, "You aren't supposed to know about that."

All might smiles, "Being the no.1 gets me some perks. So? Those cases?"

Hawks leans against the wall of the building, "All Investigations say one thing: All of those people left their homes by their own accord. They ran away."

All might frowns, "Do you think this is connected to the show again?"

"Maybe," Hawks says, "Maybe not. But the real question is, where did these people go? All of them disappeared in the span of one week."

"You think they're the ones leading the rebellion?"

"No, no. We have faces, names and their whole bio data for the rebel leaders. We'll subdue them easily, no problem. But these disappearances? They concern me."

"Maybe they're grouping up too. Another rebellion? Another fight?"

Hawks huffs, "If that's their masterplan, then they're just stupid. Quirkless are already the minority and if they keep spreading out like this, none of their little rebel groups will pose any threat to us."

All might stays silent for a little bit, then he says quietly, "But, what if they're not just fighting with fellow quirkless people? What if.....they've got allies?"

Hawks bites his lip, "Well, fuck."

~~~
"This will be your last big case, take the job after that All-might. It's for the best." Nedzu, a stoat with the whitest fur dressed in formals says. As the small animal with intelligence far beyond an average human's sips his tea, All-might sags into the couch, now becoming Yagi again.
"Nedzu, I know you mean well but you know that I don't even know the ABC's of teaching. I'll be horrible at it."
Nedzu places his cup gently on the table, "That just means that you have 10 months to learn how to not be horrible at it." He looks intensely at Yagi, delighted to see the man squirm just the slightest bit, "Besides, you'll benefit from this too."
"How so?" The blond asks, confused.
"You're looking for a successor, aren't you? Oh, don't look so surprised. I have my ways to know about such things. Anyway, U.A is a gold mine of potential heroes, I'm sure you'll find a worthy candidate for your power in these halls."
Now, if Yagi is really looking for candidate, better yet, still looking for a candidate, he'd have jumped on that offer right that instant, but he hesitates and smiles fakely, before agreeing with the Principal and Nedzu being Nedzu catches it,
"Oh sweet Jesus, you've already found a candidate, haven't you?"
Yagi sighs, "Yes I have. And before you ask me his name, let me just tell you that I haven't met him before, in person. Ever."
Nedzu smiles through his cup, "Never met and yet you know his name. Let me guess, it's Izuku Midoriya, the currently dubbed, quirkless saviour, isn't it?"
"Goddamnit Nedzu, how do you always do this?"
Nedzu fills himself another cup of tea, "As I said, I have my ways All-might."
"Well, whatever. Point is, I've got to meet with that kid and ask him, you know?"
Nedzu looks at Yagi and smiles again, it's a lot creepier this time, "Well then, it's just your luck that Izuku Midoriya applied for the U.A entrance exams and I approved his application just yesterday."
Yagi rolls his eyes, "So where do I find this training to become a good teacher again?"
~~~

Izuku sweats profusely as he comes to a halt outside the central park. His destination for today. He's been running nonstop for the past hour and all he wants to do now is collapse on a bench and sleep. For a whole day.

But, obviously, that's not an option. Not when he has less than 10 months to get into proper shape and build his body to get ready for combat.

His muscles throb achingly as he approaches a small stall to buy a bottle of water. Gulping it down, he sighs at the coolness that spreads through him as he drinks it. He likes this moment of calmness.

The past few weeks have been utter chaos for him. From replying to fanmails, to signing up for a gymnastics class, he's had his plate full, but no matter how tiring it gets, Izuku knows one thing. He enjoys this. He enjoys working towards his dream with some support.

A pro hero passes him by on his patrol and since Izuku is apparently well-known now, he nods amicably at Izuku. The greenhead smiles in return but soon it's wiped away from his face. Because he's been noticing something. And that's the increased surveillance of Mustatafu's lanes since the airing of his life on TV.

Izuku is many things. But stupid isn't one of them. So he knows there's some sort of trouble brewing here, knows that somehow the quirkless are once again affected by it or the cause of it and it unsettles him.

He worries that he might be the root of this.

He pushes those thoughts aside and starts jogging towards his home.

..

If there's some catastrophe waiting to happen then Izuku will fight it tooth and nail.

But for that, he needs to exercise first.

Oh, well.

Were some parts cryptic? I mean, I tried to make it obvious but not too much. :D
