    Summary

Tony’s words echo around in his mind, staring at the blinking cursor on his laptop screen and debating with himself.

The whole point of coming to MIT was to be different, to enjoy this— to finally live and act like a normal person for once.

    Peter straightens his shoulders.

    College was about reinvention anyway.

    He should probably get started.

“I think you’re making a mistake,” Tony finally says, not with malice but genuine concern-- a smile on Peter’s face as he looks up at the night sky-- stars that he’d never be able to see in New York glittering brightly at him.

“Maybe,” Peter says quietly, “but it’ll be mine.”

College Peter Parker and the upsetting rewiring of the self to fit... something.

My favorite section that stayed stuck in my head for a whole year before I finally read this again:

But that was part of the fucking up, Peter thinks-- not just in trying to make Harley into something that he was not but like how he had treated Ned, expecting Harley to be what he needed without thinking of what Harley even wanted to be.

Harley had his own issues-- a laundry list that Peter had barely even scratched the surface of, both separate from and because of Tony.

But that was just it, separate from Peter-- the Stark boys moniker being just a descriptor that neither of them really wanted to accept but should be honest with themselves that it is true, to an extent.

Neither of them asked Tony to be a part of their lives, even if in their own ways-- Peter thinks they’re both grateful. But being grateful for something to happen and wanting it to have happened in the first place were different, Peter sitting down on his bed and smiling as he looks into his backpack and takes out the badly made Spider-Man keychain that MJ had gotten him on their last day in the city for the break.

It was cheap and dumb and yet it felt significant because of the person who gave it to him, an understanding between the two of them that made Peter feel more grounded than all these months apart had.

They weren’t together and they both knew it but the trying to be friends who tried to pretend that they didn’t have feelings for the other wasn’t working for them. What would work for them going forward or what they could be to each other-- be for each other-- in the future, Peter doesn’t know.

What he does know is that they’re friends, just as much as he knows Harley is not-- just as much as Peter’s finally learning how to be okay with both of those things.

His fingers play around with the Spider-Man keychain, a smile on his face and a warmth in his chest as he thinks about what May had told him over the break.

    “What do you want, Pete?”

There are so many things he wants, so many things he can’t have. But fiddling around with the keychain in an empty dorm room, something slots into place for Peter that in hindsight, seems so obvious.

Being grateful for where he is doesn’t mean he has to be grateful that it happened.

College was supposed to be about reinvention.

Maybe, Peter thinks, he was trying to reinvent too much.
