Chapter Text
For as long as Madison and Zoe could remember, they have been best friends. No matter how unnoticed and unpopular they were, they stuck together since kindergarten. Ever since they got to high school, Madison had this interest in being popular. The girls are soulmates but according to Madison, being popular with her best friend would be the cherry on top.
In another attempt of getting popular, Madison decided to sign up for homecoming queen. She had no king yet but she decided to sign up anyway.
Zoe found this strange, "Why would you sign up for homecoming queen? Do you really think people will vote for you?"
Madison rolled her eyes, "Well I'm better than Coco and her boyfriend, besides, I thought you were gonna support me."
Zoe grabbed a sticker a Madison made for her campaign and stuck it on her forehead, "Yeah I support you but our school is weird, even if you get homecoming queen will you even be popular?"
Zoe was right, the school was very quirky. Robichaux's High was one of the weirder schools in New Orleans, everyone was super supportive and up to date. The teachers pride themselves on being understanding and the lockers don't even have doors, this school has nothing to hide.
"It's just to get my name out, It's fine if my plan doesn't work, there's always senior year," Madison replied while taking off the sticker.
"And your homecoming king?" Zoe teased knowing that Madison hasn't found one yet. Both of them haven't dated in the past so for Madison to go out and get a boy was different.
"He will come when it's time and speaking of boys. How's your ongoing boy crush on Kyle?" Madison teased back. Ever since Zoe arrived at high school, she had her eyes on the same popular boy. It was annoying for Madison to watch all of this since she knows that he's never gonna notice either of them.
The bell rings before Zoe could respond. Both of them grab their bags and head to class.
When Madison was heading out of math class she got a note on her desk. Zoe had no way of getting into her class so she knew it wasn't from her best friend. Madison looked around the room to see who it could be from but only a few people were in the room and it couldn't be any of them. She unfolded the note and read the writing.
Party at Gallant's house, 8:00 pm. Bring Zoe.
Madison stared at the note, smiling. She's never been invited to a party in her life and this was a big deal. Her plan might be actually working. Quickly she pulled out her phone and texted Zoe to come over after school.
Time went by fast and Madison was at home taking out all the outfits she owned. Zoe watched Madison manically try on dress after dress while sitting on her bed.
"How does this look?" Madison asked for the 10th time. She's holding a tan dress with white lines on the side.
Zoe nodded her head, "I think you'd look good in all of these, you totally gonna impress Gallant."
Madison quickly turned around, "Gallant? Gross no, he's gay. And I'm just trying to look good for my first party, maybe even find my homecoming king there."
"What, Gallants not gay," Zoe said, or maybe he is? Zoe shrugged. "Whatever, you're totally gonna gain some attention."
Madison smirked back, that's the plan.
An hour later, both of them arrived at the party. Gallant's house was pretty big, and they could hear the music from the end of the street. When they entered, the smell of alcohol and sweat hit their faces. It was just like what Madison dreamed of.
"Look," Madison whispered, then pointed to the couch. "Kyle is here."
Zoe slapped Madison's hand down, "Don't point! And yes I saw him once I entered the room."
"Well, aren't you gonna go talk to him?" Madison asked.
Zoe's eyes widened at the thought and she shook her head, "No, definitely not, I can't do that."
"I think you can," Madison said and then disappeared behind her to go explore the house, leaving Zoe to face this party alone.
Zoe cursed Madison internally, pretending that the other girl could hear her. She closes her eyes and sighs, What the hell Madison, what do I do now?
The next thing she knows, a wet liquid hits her chest and Zoe's eyes fling open. In front of her is a sorry-looking Kyle and a crushed plastic cup in between them.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry," he apologized while trying his best to wipe off the soda on her chest.
Zoe stood back, away from him, she was a little stunned that Kyle Spencer, her crush since 9th grade, is talking to her. "Yeah I'm fine," Zoe laughed but internally was screaming.
He chuckled a little too, "I'm Kyle, you're Zoe right?"
Zoe tried her best not to let her jaw drop, whaaaat Kyle Spencer knows my name, that's not crazy at all. Be cool, be cool. All that could come out was a starstruck "You know my name?"
"Yeah, Gallant was talking about you and your girlfriend," Kyle explained.
He knows my name, Zoe repeated in her head not even caring or understanding anything he said. Kyle was just standing there smiling for a few seconds until Zoe got out of her head.
"Yeah, Totally, Bye." Zoe abruptly said and then walked away to find Madison and tell her the news.
Madison is in the backyard sitting on the couch alone until Gallant approaches her. Neither of them has ever talked before but Madison knew that he was popular.
"Where's your girlfriend?" Gallant asked, before sitting down next to her. He had almost white, platinum blonde hair and was dressed in a purple vest.
Maybe he is gay after all, Madison thought quickly before responding. "My girlfr- what? I don't have a girlfriend."
Gallant tilted his head, "Oh honey, It's okay. Im gay too." His voice sounded sympathetic which was never the case with him. Whenever Madison heard him, he was either yelling or being obnoxiously himself.
"I'm not gay-" Madison started but was hushed by gallant's finger going to her mouth.
"It's okay, I know it's hard but you can't keep this part of you hidden. After all, you are gonna be the homecoming queen soon and the cats are gonna come out of the bag. The school is going to be so happy to hear that we're going to have our very first Lesbian homecoming queens."
Madison sat there contemplating to punch him but instead she let him go on. Even though she had no idea what he meant about all this gay stuff, she couldn't even get a word in if she tried.
"Come on, I can help you. It only gets better if you come out," he said and then grabbed her arm.
Against her will, Madison was now being dragged into the house by a very smug Gallant. They got to the middle of the living room before Zoe walked in.
"Madison I was looking for you, where did you go?" Zoe spoke but then noticed Gallant was holding her hand. Madison looked at Zoe, her face was confused and concerned about what was happening.
Gallant grabbed both of the girl's hands and made a loud noise to grab the attention of everyone in the room. The classmates stared back at the three of them.
"Robichaux's students, I have an announcement regarding homecoming!" He yelled. People from outside started coming in to watch what was happening. Both Zoe and Madison fumbled to get out of Gallant's tight grip. "This year's homecoming will be the most important because in the entire history of our school, meet the very first lesbian candidates for homecoming queen and queen!"
"What?" Both Madison and Zoe yelled but they couldn't be heard due to the loud cheering and clapping around the room.
"Let's hear it for our future queens!"
