Chapter Text
The crown always felt heavy on her head. It was a never ending reminder of the trials they went through but they did it together. Just how she wanted them to remain, together. Marcy got her wish but at what cost? They lost their way home forever and were now stranded here in Amphibia. They killed their king. Well, Anne actually did that. But now, the citizens have new ruler. The human that they once called a monster, they now called queen. Oh how the tables have turned.
Marcy wanted to rubbed her temples but it was a look that didn’t look good on a queen listening to her subjects. Lucky Anne was running around Newtopia with Sprig. Sasha was set to come back later tonight from a three day trip out into the toads towers. How she missed her wives right now. They were the ones who could ground Marcy back when everything got too much. When the scars of her past actions overtook her logic. When she would feel that god awful burning sensation going through her chest, her blood spilling. Hearing that voice in the back of her mind.
“Now look at what you made me do.”
He body spazzed at that voice. The toad in front of her pleading their case gave her a terrified look. Marcy rubbed her eyes. She felt the little prickles of tears at the corners.
“No. Don’t give them a look of weakness. You can not be weak to the people.”
“Are you okay my queen?”
“Oh yes. I’m fine. Perfectly fine. I’m better then ever. Can’t stop this queen. Now what were you saying?”
“I was.....asking about the potential to expand our farming into the wilderness.”
Marcy leaned forward and rubbed her chin. “Farming is the lifeblood of our kingdom. I will see what we can do. I will send word on a plan.”
“Thank you my queen,” The toad bowed before walking out.
Marcy was alone. She sighed as she leaned further into her throne. It still felt too big for her and that was still true even after they destroyed the old throne. Anne actually destroyed most of it during the fight with Andrias in her heightened state.
“I would say you need a rest but knowing you, you will fight it.” Marcy looked up to see Grime standing close to her. “You poor tadpole.”
“I’m not a child Grime. I’m about to turn twenty five.”
“To you humans that may be an adult age. To me, you are a tadpole. A lonely tadpole. If Sasha didn’t ask me to watch over you, I would be with her right now at toad tower. Beatrix is probably sharing stories of our youth to her.”
“Wait. Sasha asked you to watch over me?”
“My lieutenant said you were looking down and she said she was worried about you. She kept pestering me for a week to stay. I was tired of her constantly asking me.”
“Sasha only asked you once didn’t she?”
Grime sighed. “Yes.”
“Thank you Grime.”
“I will do my duty. Nothing will get close to the queen or they will face the POWER OF MY HAMMER!”
Grime held Barrel’s hammer high above his head. Marcy chuckled.
“How many more appointments do I have left?”
“Ummm.......twelve more.”
“Nonoooooooo,” Marcy groaned, slipping further into the cushion.
All she could feel was a burning sensation. She looked down to see a sword sticking out. She looked at Anne and Sasha who both gasped.
“Now look at what you made me do.”
“I’m sorry....for everything.”
She could see darkness slowly take over her vision. The last image she saw was the tear streaked faces of Sasha and Anne. They were meant to be together forever. Oh how wrong she was.
She gasped as she looked up from her documents. Marcy just wanted to stop but being a queen never stopped till she crossed the threshold of their bedroom. That was a promise Anne made her make. No work was to cross that door. In the privacy of their room, they were just wives and lovers. It was a place where Marcy could be herself, where Sasha could allow her walls to break, and where Anne was allowed to absorb the pain of the past. They all had their trauma. They just always dealt with it differently but they at least had each other. They had love. However, the crown felt heavier then usual today.
Was she tired? No. She had her proper amount of sleep.
Did she more buggacchinos? No. She already had a couple before coming to this meeting.
She felt a hand touched her shoulder. Yunnan looked down at her with a touch of softness in her features. When did their dynamic change? Yunnan was the rough general when Marcy was first thrown into Amphibia. Now, Yunnan was like a mother she wished she once had.
“My lady, you should get some rest now. You look tired.”
“No Yunnan. I’m fine. I just.....”
“Had a memory?” Marcy wasn’t going to hide it. Not to her adopted mother.
“Yes. His voice came rushing back to me. That damn moment came back to me.”
“You have been so busy these last few days while Anne and Sasha have been gone. You should take a few days to yourself. To rest.”
“I can’t! I can’t just stop being queen for day so I can recharge. The people need me. They need me.”
“They need a ruler who is of sound mind and body. Which you are not right now. Don’t make me get Olivia.”
Olivia was a very reasonable threat. That newt could make even the strongest person (Sasha and Yunnan) stop doing what they may be about to do. She was scary in her own strange living way.
“Do we have an agreement?”
“Only just for the rest of this day. I will not take a few days off. I don’t need it. The people of Amphibia doesn’t deserve a queen who shows weakness. Sasha and Anne don’t deserve a wife who is weak either.”
Marcy grabbed her papers and books and walked away from her desk. Yunnan’s last words made her stop.
“Marcy, please. Do not follow his path. You have friends and family behind you. Think of them. Think of us. We are your strength, not a weakness. Rely on us. Don’t push us away.”
Marcy stepped away toward her room, tears streaming down her face.
How she wanted to curl up into a blanket cocoon and just snuggle with her wives. But as queen, she wasn’t allowed that. She needed to finish this little bit of paperwork. She just needed a little bit of time to get this done.
“Hey Marbles, didn’t we say that you were not allowed to bring paperwork into our room. It’s our scared place,” Anne leaned against the doorway to their shared bedroom. Marcy just laughed.
“Hey Anna banana. I just wanted to double check on some things. I couldn’t do it in my office because Yunnan just kicked me out.”
“Yes. So I’ve heard. Yunnan told me you looked tired. Marcy, are you okay?”
Anne came up and settled her hands on her shoulders before slowly beginning to gently message them. Marcy sighed in happiness as she leaned her head back into her chair. Anne took that opportunity to press a kiss to her forehead.
“Good girl. Just relax. No more queen work. You need to just relax.”
Marcy wanted to argue but didn’t. Anne’s massage was a blessing. She felt little peppers of kisses all along her face. It was nice.
“Now look at what you made me do.”
Marcy flipped out, jumping out of the seat. Andrias’s voice echoed in her head. She wanted to run from that blade before it hurt her again. Before he shattered her heart again with his lies.
“Marcy, what’s wrong? You okay? What happen?”
Anne was cupping her face. Those brown eyes with hints of blue calmed her down a bit. She let Anne pull her into a hug.
“MarMar, what’s wrong with you?”
“I’m fine Anne Banana. I just need some food and I probably should clean up a bit.”
“Okay. I will send word to the chefs to get us something. I am going to see if Sasha is back yet. Go bathe.”
Anne quickly pressed a small kiss on her cheek before leaving Marcy alone. She knew it wasn’t going to be for long but she felt cold all of a sudden. She found herself in the bathroom, staring at that nasty scar. A long slit running down the front of her chest. For a split second, she saw that blade sticking out.
“Now look at what you made do.”
She gripped the sink to still herself. Marcy glanced at the image in the window. The crown was still on her head. The very same design as his, only made to fit her head. Only, it wasn’t fitting right. It was tightening every day. She ripped it off and threw it across the room before curling underneath the covers. She could still feel that accursed crown around her head.
Sasha hated being away from her girls for even a few hours. She stretched, on high alert for a piece of fruit to be thrown at her head. Nothing so far. Maybe they were slowly accepting her here, or Marcy sent down a law to forbid them from throwing anything at her. She wouldn’t put it past her wife. She laughed as she grabbed her belongings and carried them into the castle. The various frogs, newts, and toads that worked there greeted her. She was soon greeted by one of her favorite sights. Anne was talking with one the head frog chef.
“Hey wifey!” She waved to her wife as she ran towards her.
“Sasha, welcome back.”
Anne ran up to her and pecked her on the cheeks. Sasha took that moment to kiss her on the lips.
“I missed you and Marcy so much.”
“I’m glad you are here. Marbles isn’t been herself these last few days.”
Sasha raised an eyebrow. Marcy wasn’t herself? What did Anne mean by that?
“What do you mean? Has she been working endlessly.”
“Yes and no. I mean, Marcy has been working almost endlessly. She has been working on that new bill and that has been eating up her time. But I more worried about how she has been acting.”
“How so?” Sasha was now worried about Marcy. She knew that Marcy would concentrate on that one thing when she was so focused on something. But this was worrisome. There would be times where Marcy would retreat into herself when the memories of that day would resurface. Marcy’s lifeless body briefly flashed in her inner mind. She closed her eyes to block out that memory. The blonde felt a hand on her cheek. She looked down to see Anne cupping her cheeks, to further block the memory.
“She just seems different.”
“It is almost that anniversary.”
Anne and Sasha went silent. The anniversary of when they shattered the music box which caused the gems power to transfer back to them, stopped Andrias, used the green gem to revive Marcy and forever stranded themselves in Amphibia. It wasn’t an easy choice for them but if they had to do it all over again, they still choose the same option. They loved Marcy.
“Let’s go. I’ve been missing you guys something fierce. I just want to take off this armor.”
“I’ve missed you and I know Marcy has. It has been quiet without you.”
“Anne, I am the life of the party. Of course you would miss me.”
Anne slapped Sasha on the shoulder for that comment. Sasha let out a full belly laugh. Anne thought it sounded similar to Grime.
“Hey MarMar, guess who is home. Obviously your loving, doting, favorite wife.” Sasha almost all but smashed down the door to their bedroom with her entrance. It didn’t help that Sasha was still in possession of the pink gem stone. Anne came up behind her and slapped her arm again.
“Consort Sasha, be careful. I don’t want to have to repair another door. That would the fifth one this month,” Olivia chastised Sasha who shrank into herself. Olivia’s eyes narrowed before she pinched her the space in between her eyes. “While it is a pleasure to see you again Sasha, please be quiet. Marcy is asleep.”
Sasha peeked into their shared bedroom. Marcy was sound asleep in the middle of their king sized bed. Marcy always loved being in the middle of them, saying it was comforting to her. Sasha sighed as she saw Marcy, who had curled herself into a little ball. She looked so small there.
“Thank you Olivia. Can you go ask the chef how dinner is coming along. Also, pass the message that Sasha is home and that we will be dining in our room tonight,” Anne commanded as she steered Sasha towards the bed.
“Yes Consort Anne. I will pass along the message.” Olivia sighed, turning her head towards the queen’s body. “Please do make sure my daughter eats something and doesn’t do anymore work.”
“We will,” The human woman piped up together.
“Thank you. Yunnan and I care for her greatly.”
With that Olivia walked out of the room. Sasha looked over at Marcy. She unclipped her cape off and slowly tugged her armor off.
“How was toad tower?” Anne helped take the armor pieces and set them onto the the mannequin in the back.
“Fine. Beatrix was still in high spirits as always. She asked how you were doing.”
“Um. Did you ever find out about....the assassination attempt?”
“I found more information. I’m not liking this one bit.”
“Same here. I don’t understand why anyone would want Marcy dead.”
“They disagree with that idea that a human, a monster, could run the kingdom.”
“Marcy has done nothing but good to Amphibia. She isn’t some tyrant like Andrias.”
“I know Anne. I know. But there are many who believe in the queen. They outnumber the ones who want her dead. We will continue to be by Marcy’s side no matter what, even when that crown goes on her beautiful head.”
Marcy could hear small chatter in the background. She recognized those voices. Sasha was home. She groggily got up and turned to see Sasha sitting on the edge of the bed.
“Hey wifey. How are you feeling?” Sasha placed a hand on her knee.
“Good. I’m happy to see you back. How was the trip?”
“Always a joy. I love being on the trail, getting dust in my hair, and resorting to feasting on the wild berries. It’s so much better then being home with my wives, in the comfort of this comfy bed.”
Sasha grinned when Marcy chuckled.
“I see your humor hasn’t dried up.”
“Of course not. I am the life of this marriage.”
Sasha got another slap on the arm for that.
“Aw Anne babe. You know you are just as much the life of the marriage as I am.”
“I sometimes wonder how I even put up with you.”
“Because I am gorgeous and you love me.”
“Sure. That’s the reason why.”
Sasha pouted. Marcy felt the stress from the past few days lift off her shoulders. Her wives presence helped her calm down. Especially after the news she has received. The three soon settled into a comfortable silence. Marcy snuggled into Sasha’s side as the blonde gently run her thumb along her arm. Anne was settled next to her.
“So, what is on the menu for dinner tonight,” Sasha finally asked.
“I asked our chef to prepare us a pizza with mushrooms and a chocolate cake.”
“It’s not a vol-cake-no right? Grime doesn’t have a hand in the dessert right?”
“It’s not a vol-cake-no.”
“Oh good.”
“While we are waiting are dinner, I think I am going to work on some more paperwork. I feel asleep so I need to make sure I finished this.”
Anne and Sasha shared a look.
“MarMar, what are you thinking. Once you cross the threshold of our room, the crown comes off and you are just our Marcy.”
“I CAN’T! I AM THE QUEEN. I CAN NEVER STOP BEING QUEEN.” Marcy inhaled from her screaming before exhaling. “Not even when we are in our room. Our lives are constantly on the line. I want to make you two are safe from any assassins or even from the people. I have to be the queen all the time. This crown does not come off.”
“MarMar.” Anne attempted to reach out to Marcy, who backpedaled away.
“Don’t MarMar me. I am the queen. I can’t show weakness.”
Marcy saw Sasha’s eyes. The normal blue hue turned into a bright pink, the gem stones power.
“I understand your majesty.” Sasha drug out the majesty through gritted teeth. “We are just your servants. Not your equals. Not your wives. Just mindless puppets to your ploy. That crown truly has gotten to your head.”
“Sasha.” Anne whispered, grabbing her wife’s arm.
“No Anne. I am proving a point. Marcy, you may be queen but you are not alone. You have Anne and I. Yunnan and Olivia. The Planters. Hell, even Grimsey. You are not Andrias. You are different. You are unique. That’s what made us love you. Marcy, do not forget that. Do not push your friends and family away. You don’t have to do this alone. Relying on someone is not a sign of weakness. Now, I will be going and seeing how that food is coming along. Good day your majesty.”
Sasha walked out, door slamming and splintering the door.
Marcy settled down into the chair and pressed her face into her palms and cried. She continued to cry. Maybe Sasha was right. This crown had gotten to her head. She slipped the crown off and stared at her reflection. Cheeks botching and brown eyes bright red. Not even a hint of green was there. The crown soon had another reflection. Anne’s face was seen staring above her.
“Marcy, Sasha is right. You have Sasha and I. You have family to rely on. You are different from him. You are the queen. You are also Marcy Wu, A+ student, Vanguard Chronicles fan, and Flipboard master. Take what you know and what you are and make that crown your own. Not his.”
Marcy watched Anne’s eyes flash blue. Anne took her hands and kissed her knuckles. They stayed like for about twenty minutes when Sasha came back with dinner.
“Your majesty, dinner.” Sasha was monotone, eyes still bright pink. It sent a shiver down her spine.
“Sasha, I’m sorry. I never meant to try to control you. To make you less inferior. You are my wife and equals. You have kept me sane. You still loved me even when I betrayed your trust.”
Sasha’s eyes started to shimmer down to their normal blue color.
“You silly girl. I just wanted you to understand you are not alone in this. I loved you even then and I still love you now. Marcy, we are in this together. We choose this life. We would continue to choose this life. Let us handle the crown together. Got it?” Marcy nodded her head, wiping away the tears that were falling. Sasha looked at the crown in Marcy’s hands and grabbed it. “So, we have some new reforms that will soon sweep this kingdom. Starting with this.”
Sasha stepped out to the balcony. Anne and Marcy followed behind her. Sasha flipped the coral like crown in her hand before throwing her arm back in a pitcher pose. She tossed it.
“Sasha! What the hell!” Anne screamed out.
“We are designing a new crown for Marcy tomorrow. Maybe something from that JRPG you love. Something that will show Marcy’s role. Now, I want to eat some grub and then cuddle my wives.”
Marcy enjoyed just eating and laughing with her wives as they remembered fond times. They were soon in bed, Marcy in the middle. As Sasha and Anne soundly slept, Marcy smiled for the first time in the past few days. She could show weakness cause she had strong arms to fall into. She feel asleep, in peace and had no nightmares that night.
Anne and Sasha placed the newly designed crown on her head. It was a simple design. Just a gold band with three gems centered in the middle.
“Perfect. It fits you perfectly Marbles. I like it,” Anne smiled at her.
“Thank you. I wanted something to symbolize us.”
“Look at my MarMar. She looks so beautiful. I am lucky to be married to a wonderful queen. Anne, I could take or leave you.”
“Hey. I love you.” Anne slapped Sasha in the arm.
“You know I love you. I love you both.”
Marcy snuggled into both of her wife’s arms as they tightly hugged her.
The crown felt lighter then ever. It never once felt that tight again. With Sasha and Anne by her side as she always wanted, Marcy was ready to take on the strange world of Amphibia.
