Summary
“Time is ticking boy.” Pagan’s voice rang loudly in his ears from the static of the radio. Ajay didn’t care to hear it. The ranting and raving, the constant promises of tough love and the betterment of him as a person. Ajay was sick of it. This wasn’t tough love. Pagan didn’t understand the meaning of that phrase. There was no love here, only a sadistic game for his own amusement justified as actually giving a shit about him.
Tough love.
Love was already harsh and unrelenting. Love was what got him into this mess in the first place. A love for a mother who gave him everything, only to die alone and miserable in a hospital, her body ravaged by a cancer that ate her up inside. The pain of the treatments was constant as she endured sickness just to stay with him a little bit longer. He wasn’t there when she finally passed away. He wasn’t there, not when she needed him most. But she forgave him, just as she had forgiven him when he turned himself in after the clerk was killed. She forgave him, with grief filled eyes when he enlisted in the Army to avoid a prison sentence. The pain in her eyes, he understood now after seeing her home country.
There was love, but it died in the midst of war.
