Chapter 1: Notice

Chapter Text

When the alert popped up on your screen that Mr. Kaiba required you in his office ASAP within seconds of you logging in for the day, you felt a momentary flash of fear. Just last week, one of your flatmates had been called up to the CEO’s office and he had been gone by the time you had finished work. You were not sure why, though you suspect it was something to do with the phone calls you had overheard, where he had been talking about things you knew were under non-disclosure agreements.

If Mr. Kaiba suspected that you were aiding and abetting in leaking company secrets, you just knew you were going to be the next one evicted from the company building AND the apartment block that he owned.

You logged off of the computer, unwilling to leave your project open for anyone to mess with and snatched up your bag, hoping that it was simply a matter of an adjustment to the work you had submitted. You could not help the nervous trembling as you headed for the elevator however. An adjustment could be passed down via your Team Leader. This seemed much bigger than that.

As you took the ride up, you brushed off any dust that might be on your clothes and straightened the hem of your suit jacket, trying to make yourself look presentable. If you were going to get fired, you were determined that you were not going to embarrass yourself on the way out.

The moment you stepped from the elevator the secretary paged the CEO, clearly recognising you despite the fact you have never been up here before, suggesting that Mr. Kaiba warned her in advance. The look you received from her as you headed for the office door was sympathetic, not helping the nervousness as you step into the white walled room within.

Mr. Kaiba’s office was an almost blank canvas, its white walls broken up occasionally with photos of the CEO’s little brother. Not that you were paying that much attention as you shut the door and approached the desk, where Kaiba Seto watched you carefully.

“Take a seat.”

His tone was brusque, his expression closed off in the way that everyone at the company knew meant that he was trying to hide how he was feeling. As you took the seat opposite him, you could not help but wonder what was going on. “How can I help, Mr. Kaiba?”

“You are the only resident of apartment 7-F in the KC Apartment Block, correct?”

Your eyes widened at the question and you sat back. Your apartment was one of the three person apartments in the tower and neither of the other rooms in your flat were occupied right now. The third who had lived there had jumped ship and gone to work for a lower stress company. You had been kind of enjoying the peace and quiet of having the place to yourself. “Yes, Mr. Kaiba.”

“There was a fire at the Kaiba Mansion and it requires substantial renovations.” The CEO informed you, “I will be moving myself and Mokuba into the spare rooms in your apartment until they are complete.”

You opened your mouth and closed it, hesitating to ask the questions racing through your mind.

“I will compensate you for the intrusion, but you are to go home. Now. And ensure the rooms will be ready for us to arrive at 6:30. You will be paid for the full day’s work.”

“Yes sir.” Your mind raced as it went over the mess that the apartment had become over the last week. You had had no one to worry about, after all, there had been no need to keep the place tidy. “May I?”

“You can go.”

As you rushed from the office, you paused in the doorway, “Should I order something for dinner? I don’t have much in to cook…”

“That will be taken care of.”
