Summary
“I love you.” The words fall out of Zuko’s mouth, artless and perhaps ill-timed. Even after two years, Zuko is unsure how to show his love, does not come naturally to sharing affection the way Sokka, Toph, and now Izumi do. But if the moment is wrong, Sokka does not pass comment. He simply smiles, returns the declaration of love, and lets Zuko bask in the strangeness of being happy.
Sokka’s hands have trailed up to trace the line of Zuko’s brow, dropping low to follow the line of his scar back to his ear. “We’ll have to get ready for tonight soon.”
Zuko groans, but he’s laughing. “You can’t make me,” he pouts, just to be petulant, just to reassure himself that he can be disagreeable and loved all the same.
Sokka makes a commiserating noise, runs a few fingers through Zuko’s loose hair. “I know, Sunshine. They’re awful.”
Zuko sighs, lets his eyes flutter shut. “It will be pretty awful,” Zuko admits. “But it will be less awful with you.”Series
