Work Text:
“How much do you know about constellations?” Kara asks causally as she slips into bed next to Lena.
“Hmm?” Lena hums, she didn’t really hear the question; she’s enthralled by the book she’s reading this week.
Kara gets closer and wraps her arm around Lena’s midsection as her cheek presses up against her shoulder.
“I said, how much do you know about constellations?” Kara asks one more time before Lena lays her book face down so she doesn’t loose her place.
“I did take a few classes on astrology when I was in college, but I don’t know a whole lot except for a few. Why do you ask, love?” She takes the hand she was using to hold her book and intertwines in with Kara’s outstretched hand.
“I was just thinking about how my family on Krypton taught me all about the constellations as a child. When I first got to earth, looking up at the constellations was a great comfort for me. I would spend hours laying on our roof, counting stars and constellations. It’s all I really had left of my planet and the life I had before earth became my home.” Kara let’s out a sigh and snuggles closer to Lena.
Lena gives Kara’s hand a squeeze and wraps her free arm around her shoulders. “I’d like hear more about them. How many constellations do you know?”
“I know all 88 known constellations and a handful of others that could only been seen from krypton.”
“I didn’t even begin to consider that there are more than 88 constellations out there. Which constellation is your favorite?”
As they continue to talk about the constellations, Kara begins to perk up. She doesn’t seem as sad as she was when she brought up her family. Sharing her love of stars with Lena has made this a better memory for her.
“I don’t really have a favorite, but when I got to earth, I found out about the Greek mythology behind some of the most beautiful constellations. Just knowing some of the myths was cool; like reading a short story.”
“Well you know I love a good book, darling.” Lena kisses Kara on the top of her head and rests her chin there, but Kara has other plans. She begins to detangle herself from Lena and turns to face her. She crawls between Lena’s legs, sitting with her legs crossed.
“Do you want to go star gazing right now?” Kara asks as she grabs both of Lena’s hands. “It’s not too late and it’s beautiful tonight.”
Lena let’s out a small laugh and pulls Kara close for a kiss before she answers.
“I would love too, but we’re in the city, Kara.” Lena thinks for a moment and realizes what Kara means. “Nevermind, you’ll just fly us to the stars, won’t you?”
“Is that okay? I’ll only go high enough to get a clear view of the stars.” Kara knows that Lena doesn’t particularly like to fly unless she has to.
“Yes, just don’t let me fall.” Lena laughs. She knows Kara would never let that happen.
Kara rolls her eyes, giggles, and pulls Lena out of bed with her.
She leads her out to the balcony and pulls Lena to chest. “Let me know when you’re ready.”
“This never gets any easier does it,” Lena says and takes a deep breath. “Ready.”
“Hold on tight.”
Lena does as Kara says and wraps her arms around Kara’s neck. In turn, Kara has her arms wrapped around Lena’s waist.
Kara flys straight up into the sky and hovers above the city for a moment.
“You can open your eyes now. I’ve got you.”
Lena does, but she is still feeling uneasy.
“I know what we’re going to do. You know how I some times float in my sleep? I’m going to do that and you’re going to lay on top of me, facing the sky.”
“Okay,” Lena says as she shakes out any remaining nerves, but closes her eyes again.
Kara slowly leans back while turning Lena in her arms so she’s facing away from her. Lena rests her head back on Kara’s chest. Kara keeps her arms wrapped tightly around Lena and keeps her legs still in the air. As funny as it sounds, it’s almost like Lena us using Kara as a bed.
“Lena, baby, open your eyes.” Kara reaches up to stroke Lena’s cheek for a little encouragement.
Lena does as she is told and opens them to view the wide number of stars in the sky.
“I bet you never saw the sky like this before.”
“Yeah, no, definitely not. So tell me Galileo, what do you see?” Lena laughs.
“From where the earth is currently positioned, I see - Oh! - this is great. We’ll start with Ophiuchus!”
Lena smiles to herself, knowing that this is going to turn into such a sweet memory for the two of them.
“In Greek mythology, it’s the God Apollo holding a snake in each hand. There’s Barnard’s Star,” Kara says as she points out where Lena can find it. “And then there’s Cebalrai,” Kara continues with each star until Lena has a clear picture of Ophiuchus.
“It also could be considered the 13th zodiac sign in some texts,” Kara adds. “Right below Ophiuchus is Scorpius.”
“Ophiuchus is said to be stepping on Scorpius actually. It’s one of the brightest constellations in the sky. Seems fitting that it’s your zodiac sign.” Kara gives Lena a small squeeze.
Lena is just enjoying the sound of Kara’s voice talking about something she loves so dearly. She only hums along to everything Kara is saying. She almost forgets that she’s floating miles in the air this very moment.
“There’s Antares, the brightest star in the constellation. The second brightest star is Shaula, which makes up the end of the tail. Oh! There’s the Butterfly Cluster of stars close by.” Kara let’s out a yawn after she finishes mapping out Scorpius for Lena.
“Getting sleepy, Supergirl?” Lena teases.
“Yeah,” Kara answers as she lets out another yawn. “I’m gunna straighten us out now, okay?”
“Wait,” Lena begins to say, “turn me around first.”
Kara does and Lena makes it a point to wrap her arms around Kara, snuggling her face into her neck. They float like that for a few extra minutes. It’s a silent understanding that they’ll hold this position for a little while longer.
“Now we can go to bed,” Lena finally says.
Kara brings them upright and floats slowly back down to their balcony. Without another word, Kara pulls Lena into a bridal carry and lays her down on her side of the bed. Kara goes to close the glass door and returns to Lena. When she crawls into bed, Lena immediately goes to lay in Kara’s open arms.
“I think I’d like to do that again.” She says.
“Yeah?” Kara asks. “You would go again?”
“Mhm, floating seems more tolerable than actual flying. I also just want to hear you sweet talk me with your vast knowledge of the night sky.” Lena looks up at Kara with adoration.
“I’m so glad to hear that,” Kara says as she reaches over to her right to turn the bedside lamp off.
