Work Text:
Luz Noceda couldn’t recall a time when she had smiled this much from just being around someone.
She adored Eda, and King was absolutely precious. Willow and Gus were wonderful friends, and if they ever had problems, she knew they would be able to work through anything. But this felt different.
She knew why- and quite honestly, it was becoming a bit of a problem.
Amity was not just a friend. At least, not to Luz’s brain.
When they first got to know each other, she was pretty, super brave, and really cool. Like, everything Luz had wanted whenever she dreamed up some fantasy world with a mysterious, broody partner.
Even if they hadn’t gotten off on the right foot.
And maybe Luz was a bit obvious every time she tried to befriend Amity, because what kind of person tries to befriend some aggressive stranger that badly without some further reasoning behind it?
But even if it was obvious she was crushing before she even knew it herself, maybe it was worth it for this.
Because Amity was unbelievably cute when she was reading.
In this specific moment, and so many others, she was completely enamored with Amity- the way she smiled as she propped her leg up on the library desk, one hand pointing dramatically to the air, was unlike anything Luz would’ve expected from her first impression.
“Hecate faced the dark witch Opeli with an expression of unwavering bravery. She lifted Azura’s staff in the same direction, a spell already being charged at its end and called out to where a shadowed arm held her beloved partner above a threatening ravine. “Stay away from my Azura!” And with a burst of light, the shadow hand relinquished its hold on the good witch, leaving the two to fight side-by-side once again.”
Amity shot Luz a soft smile from above, and Luz felt herself fall in love with the moment all over again.
This was definitely worth it.
She smiled back at Amity, allowing herself a moment to appreciate just how cute she was as the witch was focused on the book. She zoned out on what Amity was saying- having read the book on her own dozens of times, she figured it wasn’t all that important.
Soon, though, Amity’s expectant smile turned towards Luz.
She knew they had been reading together. Knew there was probably a line she was supposed to respond with. But she couldn’t be bothered to think about how much time had passed or what page they were on now- or anything, really, aside from one thing that was definitely not the response Amity was expecting.
“I really wanna kiss you.”
Luz felt a blush rise to her face, only processing the words after she said them. She moved to hide her face in her hoodie and, for good measure, shoved her hands in front of her eyes.
Maybe if she didn’t perceive the world around her, she could disappear.
It wasn’t like she had said anything wrong - and it was definitely true- but Amity always went red any time she said or did anything that was too much.
She was so dead.
“That’s um- that’s not how the line goes.”
Oh thank the Titan, there was still a chance to recover from this.
“I wasn’t acting.”
Or not.
Despite every atom in her body wanting to refuse, Luz parted her fingers slowly so she could look at Amity’s face in an attempt to gauge her reaction.
Amity stared straight at Luz, her eyes wide and face red. Her ears twitched from being pushed down nearly perpendicular, and she almost looked like she wasn’t breathing.
She must be so mad…
“You- what? Hang on, I just- Huh?”
Luz tapped her hands on the library desk, trying to distract herself before she could start talking again and embarrass herself further.
It didn’t work.
“Yeah, sorry, I’ve actually uh- I’ve had a crush on you for a while. And for a while I just thought I would never tell you because I’ve never had a crush that felt this real, y’know- it was always just some random guy I’d talk to or a cute girl in my class, and I didn’t think we’d ever even become friends so I didn’t really have a chance. Actually I didn’t even mean to tell you now- I wouldn’t say I tried to stop it from happening but actually I just wasn’t thinking like at all so i didn’t try to do anything. Sorry again for, y’know. So anyways I can like, leave, or we can keep acting out Azura or whatever. Whatever you want.”
Wow, way to go Luz! Such a wonderful, controlled conversation!
She couldn’t help but feel her face drop further when she heard Amity begin to laugh. It wasn’t a malicious laugh, Luz knew that, so then what?
“What I want- what I want is to kiss you too.”
Wait…
“What?!”
Her eyes widened as Amity drew her arms up to the sides of her face.
Was she going to…
Amity flipped her hoodie down so her full face was visible, along with her ears- which were surely a few shades darker than normal.
She laughed again, grabbing Luz’s hands with each of hers, and she allowed some of the tension to dissipate.
“Honestly I’m surprised you never noticed.”
Luz scoffed, folding her arms- and immediately missing the feeling of Amity’s hands in hers.
“How would I have noticed? You- you just- any time I say anything even remotely nice to you your face turns all red like you’re mad or- or embarrassed and oh my God I’m going to kill Edric that liar.”
Amity only laughed harder at Luz’s slow realization, pressing her face to Luz’s shoulder for support.
“In Ed’s defense- wow, never thought I’d be saying that- I do get red whenever I’m mad. It’s just... not the only reason.”
Luz nodded, her mind finally feeling calm enough to look up at Amity.
Wow.
Her face was so close.
“So are we gonna- um- y’know…” Luz’s eyes darted away from Amity’s for a moment because even though she’d built up the courage to look at her she really had not accounted for the fact that they would be this close or that Amity would look this pretty.
Amity stared at her blankly before it seemed to click.
“Oh! Oh yeah we can um- we can do that.”
Luz nodded, turning so she was fully facing Amity.
The two looked at each other for a few moments, trying to catch their breath, trying to think.
How does kissing actually work?
Where were they supposed to put their hands?
How long were kisses supposed to last? Specifically first kisses?
A few too many moments. Because neither of them were moving in and she really hoped Amity wasn’t having second thoughts about this.
Don’t think, just go for it!
Luz squeezed her eyes shut, pushing herself forward.
Only, apparently Amity had the same idea at the same time, and they were both wrong about that being the way to do things and it fucking hurt.
Amity rubbed her forehead tentatively, watching Luz do the same.
“I’m so-”
“I didn’t-”
The two started at the same time, only stopping when they noticed the other talking.
“My head hurts,” Amity mumbled after a moment.
“Sorry,” Luz laughed awkwardly.
“It’s fine! I mean- I’m sorry too. Not sorry for- um- just- sorry I did it wrong. And sorry for rambling, I'm gonna stop doing that now.”
Luz laughed again, more genuine this time, and moved to hold Amity’s hand.
“It’s okay,” she mumbled.
Much slower this time, Luz allowed her eyes to drift shut as her face moved towards Amity’s.
It still wasn’t right- their noses bumped this time, because she forgot to tilt her face to fit against Amity’s, and they both ended up groaning in frustration.
Neither of them had ever kissed anyone before- that much was obvious- but Luz had hoped she would at least retain some kind of idea of how to do it from all the graphic novels and cheesy TV show romances she would get invested in.
Amity seemed to be going through the same thing, her face scrunched up in thought.
Luz felt a bubble of fondness creep up her chest, blossoming in her throat.
She looked very cute like that.
Determined to get it right, Luz took a deep breath in before deciding to reposition her hands.
She moved one of her hands to rest around Amity’s waist, drawing the other one up to cradle her face- this way, she could at least have some way of guiding herself.
Amity let out a soft “oh” as her mind snapped back to the present.
Luz ran her thumb across Amity’s cheek gently.
“Is this still okay?” She whispered. She hoped Amity could hear her over the thumping of her heartbeat.
“Yeah- yeah it’s-”
Amity cut herself off the moment before Luz’s lips met hers. The tension seemed to fall away from her, her shoulders relaxing and her head tilting slightly to adjust against Luz.
A smile edged its way onto Luz’s face, forcing her to pull away from the kiss.
“Perfect,” Luz whispered to herself.
Despite all the bumps in the road, Amity found herself agreeing.
Yeah, it was perfect.
