Work Text:

-------

Kirishima always asked Bakugou out in the same way. He would call Bakugou’s name in such an obnoxiously endearing manner that Bakugou couldn’t help but focus on him. Then he turned on the cute, eyes widening in a plea for him to take some time out his weekend and do whatever Kirishima was asking of him.

He could never refuse. Not Kirishima.

So when Bakugou heard Kirishima knocking on his door, whining his name in the signature tone, Bakugou resigned himself to getting nothing done this weekend.

But he couldn’t complain when he opened the door to Kirishima beaming at him.

“Katsuki!” Kirishima flung himself at Bakugou, the latter barely catching him as they both stumble backwards into Bakugou’s room. Their heads bang together, the noise echoing around the room, followed promptly by giggles from Kirishima.

“What the fuck was that for?” Bakugou releases Kirishima, opting instead to rub the quickly reddening spot on his forehead.

“Accident. Here, cmere.” Kirishima removes Bakugou’s fingers from his face, replacing them with his lips. Bakugou pouts, unable to stay mad.

“Better, Kat?”

“I guess.”

“Good, good.” Kirishima pushes Bakugou into a seated position on his bed, sitting in his lap and wrapping his arms around Bakugou’s shoulders.

It takes Bakugou a moment to fully process what was happening. They had been dating for a while, but every time Kirishima started to show him affection, his brain short circuited for a while. The more affection he was shown, the harder it was for him to think.

Kirishima knew exactly how to take advantage of this, as he began to walk his fingers up the back of Bakugou’s neck, dragging the tips along the edges of his ear softly enough to make Bakugou squirm.

“Soooo Katsuki…” Bakugou doesn’t have the presence of mind to respond. He was too focused on not going insane from the physical contact.

“The carnival is going to be in town this weekend. Will you come with me, pretty please? I’ll make sure you enjoy yourself.” Kirishima upped the affection, tilting Bakugou’s head up slightly and pressing a kiss to his lips.

It was all Bakugou could do to nod.

-------

Bakugou had to go home to celebrate his dad’s birthday the day he and Kirishima were supposed to go to the carnival, so he was running late getting to their meeting point.

Late was 10 minutes early instead of his usual 20.

“Kat!” Kirishima’s voice reaches Bakugou’s ears just as he pulled out his phone to text the redhead that he was there. He turned to see Kirishima holding two wristbands and smiling brighter than the lights that illuminated the carnival space.

“Hey.” Bakugou leans into Kirishima’s embrace a little too easily, causing Kirishima to stiffen with concern.

“You okay? We can leave if you want.”

“I’m fine. Just...some of my family that doesn’t see often stopped by as a “surprise”. It didn’t go well. They piss me the fuck off. My mom made me leave before I could knock my cousin out, which is completely unfair.” As he spoke, Bakugou took the wristbands from Kirishima and put them on them both of them, taking great care to make sure the sticky part didn’t attach to Kirishima’s skin.

“Is it the ones that always says your mom married down?” Bakugou nods, clearly done with the topic. Kirishima sighs briefly before taking Bakugou’s hand in his and beginning to drag him through the carnival.

“What do you want to do first?” Bakugou’s question made Kirishima pause, looking at his surroundings before his eyes land on his selected target. He can’t help but smile as he pulls Bakugou over to the bumper cars. They stand in line quietly, Bakugou fidgeting with his wristband until they’re allowed inside the ride.

Kirishima knows his choice will distract Bakugou from what was going on at home, and insists they ride in separate cars, despite Bakugou’s protests.

Protests that disappear once the ride starts.

Bakugou had never ridden the bumper cars before, but he got the hang of it rather quickly. Too quickly. He started laughing maniacally, slamming into anything that crossed his path. On one hand, Kirishima was glad to see him enjoying himself. On the other...he had made 5 kids cry by the time it was over. Kirishima tried to apologize, but Bakugou’s resistance to sympathy made it difficult.

“You could’ve taken it easy on them. Now I feel bad.” Kirishima linked arms with Bakugou, trying to get away from the parents they had angered as soon as possible.

“They shouldn’t have gone in if they weren’t ready to get their shit rocked.” Bakugou looked absolutely giddy, and that alone was enough for Kirishima to soften. He leaned on Bakugou’s shoulder as they walked, scrunching his face up when Bakugou rubs their noses together unexpectedly. Bakugou wasn’t usually one for public displays of affection.

“What’s that?” Bakugou gestures to a funhouse, walking them over to the line.

“You’ve never been inside a funhouse?” Bakugou shakes his head, threading his fingers through Kirishima’s hair softly, tugging at the spot where they get stuck until the knot comes undone. He wasn’t very vocal today, but Kirishima wasn’t particularly worried about Bakugou’s lack of talking. He knew that getting away from his family would be enough for him.

“I don’t think you’re actually going to like this, Kat.”

-------

True to Kirishima’s prediction, Bakugou did not enjoy any part of the funhouse.

The first section was the hall of mirrors. Kirishima, who got out pretty easily, turned to see Bakugou still stuck at the entrance, spinning in circles frustratedly.

“Kat! What are you even doing?”

“Why are there so many of these damn mirrors?? What the fuck is this shit?” Kirishima had to rush back inside to stop Bakugou from blowing up the mirrors.

He didn’t let Bakugou leave his side after that. Not that it helped.

The next section was a ball pit. It wasn’t very deep, but it was just enough to piss Bakugou off. This time, Kirishima couldn’t help but laugh as Bakugou struggled against the sea of colored orbs restraining him.

“Stop fucking laughing at me, idiot!”

“That’s so rude, Kat.” Kirishima picks up a ball, tossing it in the air a few times before lobbing it at Bakugou, hitting him on the nose.

“Oh word? That’s what you want to do?” Laughter bounced off the walls as the pair began an all out war, only ending when Bakugou slipped and fell deeper into the pit, sending Kirishima spiraling into more laughter.

The third section was a room where the floor moved depending on how you walked. Both of them had good senses of balance, but for some reason, Bakugou kept falling halfway through and having to start again. Not even having Kirishima lead him helped, as he sent them tumbling time and time again. He ended up having to crawl through the room, much to Kirishima’s delight. He recorded the interaction until Bakugou stood and threatened him with hell on earth if the video ever surfaced. Kirishima responded to the threat with a kiss.

The last part was a steep slide leading to fluffy mats. Having gone through the entire funhouse together, Bakugou was reluctant to slide down himself, and tugged on Kirishima’s sleeve until he asked for a double seated mat.

The sliding wasn’t that bad until they got to the bottom, where it curved just enough to send them flying in the air. Bakugou landed splayed on top of Kirishima, limbs tangled together awkwardly. He was also halfway off the mat, knees scraped against the hard concrete that the carnival was situated on.

“Get off me, man. You’re heavy.” Kirishima tried to push Bakugou from underneath, making Bakugou squirm and roll off unceremoniously.

“‘M not heavy; you’re just weak.”

“Oh I’M weak? Really? I’m weak? Bet.” Bakugou almost shrieked when Kirishima picked him up off the ground and threw him over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. It took 3 whole minutes of apologies for Kirishima to put him back down.

-------

Kirishima led Bakugou around until they stopped in front of a game booth.

Well, Kirishima stopped. Bakugou wasn’t aware they were stopping until he bumped into the redhead. Which didn’t break Kirishima’s concentration from what stopped him in the first place.

Bakugou follows Kirishima’s line of sight until he sees what forced Kirishima into a stupor.

A giant red shark was the top prize for the game booth they stood in front of. Some sort of targeting shooting game that Bakugou knew Kirishima didn’t have the focus or agility for.

“You want the shark?” Hearing Bakugou’s voice broke Kirishima out of his mental prison of sharks.

“I- You would win it for me?”

“In one try.”

-------

It actually took Bakugou four tries to win the shark. By the time he had, they also ended up with a light up necklace, a pair of cat ears, and a pair of matching bracelets. Kirishima donned the light up necklace and a bracelet, leaving Bakugou staring at the black cat ears in his hand.

“C’mon Kat; you gotta wear em.”

“There’s no way in hell that you’re getting these things on my head.”

“Not even for me, Katsuki?” The whine that worked its way into Kirishima's voice told Bakugou he wouldn’t be winning this battle either.

-------

And that’s how he ended up in line for the Ferris Wheel in a pair of cat ears and a bracelet complementary to the one Kirishima wore. As they stood, Kirishima took pictures of Bakugou until Bakugou grabbed his phone and deleted them all, making Kirishima pout until Bakugou took a selfie with him.

The line for the Ferris Wheel wasn’t that long, and soon Kirishima and Bakugou sat in a red car with orange seats, slowly rocking their way to the top of the wheel.

“I can’t wait to get to the top.”

“I’m in love with you.” Bakugou’s confession took Kirishima by surprise, but only slightly. Bakugou was the type to say stuff like that at the randomest times, but that’s what made him so endearing.

“I know. Love you too, Kat. Always.” Kirishima reached out a hand to place on Bakugou’s knee, rubbing his skin through the purposeful tear in the fabric.

“You’re important to me. I don’t…” Bakugou trails off, and Kirishima knows better than to interrupt his train of thought. Whatever he had to say was important enough to be on his mind the entire night.

“My relatives from earlier said that my parents were a disappointment because I’m gay. My mom didn’t want me to hear it, but I accidentally caught the end of it as I came out the bathroom.”

“She was mad, but my dad was madder. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him that angry. That’s the real reason my mom made me leave. She didn’t want to ruin the image of my dad I have, I guess.”

“But just seeing him get so mad on my behalf…it felt nice. My parents have always supported me and shit but this was different.” The quiet that followed was so drenched in emotion from both of them that it threatened to weigh the entire car down. Neither of them had anything in particular to say, because there was enough unspoken sitting in between them that they had nothing to say.

This was always one of the best parts about being around Kirishima. He could read what Bakugou was saying without any words transpiring between them. All Bakugou had to do was breathe and Kirishima knew.

It was so easy.

“I know it wasn’t always easy with your parents, Kat; I’m glad that you guys have taken this step forward.” Kirishima’s fingers sitting underneath the rough material of his jeans comforted Bakugou in a way he wasn’t adept enough to explain. He knew that he didn’t have to, but he ached to put into the air how he felt about Kirishima.

He thought about it all the way up to the top of the Ferris Wheel. Kirishima’s gasp brought him back to Earth, and seeing Kirishima brighten at the sight around them took Bakugou’s own breath away.

“Kir.”

“Yeah, Kat?”

“Don’t ever leave me.”

“Wasn’t planning on it. You’re stuck with me, Kat.”

-------

After the Ferris Wheel, Kirishima and Bakugou wandered over to a secluded patch of grass and trees and sat down. Shark held firmly in his lap, Kirishima sat next to Bakugou, holding one of his hands with both of his own.

“There’s supposed to be fireworks soon.” Kirishima couldn’t shake the feeling that Bakugou had cut himself short before, but he didn’t want to press him too far. Whatever it was, Bakugou would tell him when he was ready.

“Do you think we would ever get married?” Bakugou’s question barely missed the start of the fireworks, and Kirishima let go of his hand in order to turn and face him.

“Do you want to get married, Katsuki?”

“Dunno. Never thought about it before.” Bakugou picked at the grass underneath him, pulling up one blade at a time until Kirishima grabbed his hands again.

“Stop hurting the environment, bully.”

“Would you say yes if I asked you to marry me?”

“Well, Kat, I think we’re a little young to get married, don’t you?”

“Didn’t say we had to get married right now. I just...wanna know if you would ever want to.”

“Propose to me and see what happens.” Bakugou’s scowl made Kirishima lose himself in giggles, and the fireworks illuminated him from behind, making him glow in such a fiery way that Bakugou couldn’t stop himself from leaning forward and kissing him until the fireworks ended.

-------

“This was a good date.” Kirishima stood at the entrance to his dorm, trying desperately to insert his key into the lock.

“You’re only saying that because you got that damn shark.”

“Hey! Don’t talk about her like that!” Kirishima finally got the door open, stepping inside and letting Bakugou follow.

“Her?”

“Yes. Her name is Shanae.”

“Shanae the Shark…”

“What, you have a better idea?”

“Whatever makes you happy, Kir.” Bakugou flopped stomach up onto Kirishima’s bed, obviously ready to go to bed.

“Maybe I should’ve named her after you then. Lady Explosion Murder the Second?” Kirishima laid on top of him for a while, blowing air into Bakugou’s face until Bakugou managed to throw Kirishima off of him.

“Shut up. Do you want me to stay over?”

“You think I let you in here for fun, Katsuki?”

-------

“I want to get married to you.” Bakugou’s whispers came when Kirishima had almost fallen asleep. He was tucked so succinctly into Bakugou’s shoulder that he could barely keep his eyes open, especially when Bakugou started to massage his head.

“Mmmm told you; we’re too young.”

“Not now. It doesn’t even have to be soon. But one day. Promise me.”

“Promise. Now get some rest Kat. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Not sleepy.”

“Kat, you’re sleepier than I am. Go to bed, babe; I’ll be here when you wake up.” That affirmation, along with Kirishima’s lips brushing against his cheek, was all it took, and soon Bakugou fell deep into a slumber filled with the reds and oranges of a sunset that soothed his soul.
