Chapter Text

It's written in big, bold letters on a small note that almost disappears among all the other, more colorful and attention-grabbing notifs that are plastered over the corkscrew board in the school's hallway: Do you hate your power?

The rest of the note simply reads: Hi! I'm a senior here at JYP, and I've gone through a lot of struggles because of my power, so I figured I'd try to put together a support group for people who feel the same way. You don't need to hate your power to join, we don't even have to talk about powers at all, I just thought our lives might be easier around people who can relate, which is why I'm putting together a group chat. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please don't hesitate to reach out!

At the very bottom of the page, there's a phone number.

Chan!: And hi, I'm sorry for being a mess but you're the first person to text me and just finished a producing session so I'm kinda dazed haha

Leenho: lol no, it's a mashup of my first and last name

Leenho: I think you're gonna need to prepare some more before the next person texts you, but you can practice on me first

Chan!: Haha thanks, but I think I've got this!

Leenho: I highly doubt that but I don't wanna kill your confidence so I'll just let it slide...

Leenho: Anyway, what made you want to start a support group?

Chan!: I'm not a fan of my own power so I figured there would probably be more people like me out there!

Chan!: Everyone puts so much emphasis on how great powers are, and what a blessing it is to find out what yours is, but that's not the case for everyone

Chan!: I'm hoping we can find more people who relate to how we feel

Leenho: That's very nice of you

Chan!: Thank you!

Leenho: If you don't mind, what's your power?

Leenho: Mine's flying

Chan!: I have dreams about the future, dreams that usually come true, and a lot of them are nightmares

Chan!: I usually avoid sleeping because of it...

Chan!: What about you? Do you wanna share why you don't like that power?

Leenho: I guess I've just never had much use of it

Chan!: Ah, I see

Leenho: But what about the support group? Are you making a group chat, or will it be an irl thing?

Chan!: There will be a group chat! Maybe in a week or so, once there are enough people to make one

Chan!: Do you want me to tell you before I make the chat? Or should I just add you to it?

Leenho: lol it's fine if you just add me, I don't need a warning

Chan!: Since we're at the same college, do you mind sharing your major, or maybe what year you're in?

Leenho: Since you seem like you're a real person, and you're actually serious about this, I guess I can tell you about myself

Leenho: I'm a dance major in my 3rd year, and my name is Minho

Chan!: Nice to meet you, Minho!

Leenho: can I give you some pointers for the next time someone texts you?

Chan!: Please do

Chan!: I'm not clueless but my brain went empty when this conversation started

Chan!: Not in a bad way or anything! I just haven't really planned further than putting up that note and making a group chat with everyone who reaches out!

Leenho: haha I kinda figured

Leenho: But don't worry too much, I think you're doing good so far!

Chan!: Debatable, but thanks

Leenho: The only thing I was gonna say is to keep in mind that the person who reaches out is likely feeling nervous about it, so asking them questions is good

Leenho: Obviously you shouldn't be intrusive about it, but a lot of people might not know what to say, so it will make the whole conversation easier if you take the lead immediately

Changbin!: Yeah okay, I can wait! There's not really anything immediate going on that I need the support group for

Changbin!: Actually, there's not really... anything? going on with me? And that's kind of why I wanted to join

Chan!: Oh, how do you mean?

Changbin!: Well, I don't really have a power...?

Changbin!: or I guess I do, but I haven't discovered what it is yet, so your support group just sounded nice to me because I'm feeling a lot of pressure right now

Changbin!: All my friends and family want me to try different things to see if it will trigger my power, and it's very tiring to hear them go on about that all day

Changbin!: I'm fine as I am now, I don't need to find out what my power is to "complete my life" or whatever

Chan!: Ah... Even thought I can't relate to the situation, that sounds like it would be really exhausting

Chan!: Do you think they know how it makes you feel when they do that?

Changbin!: I've tried talking to them, but they don't seem to get it... :/

Changbin!: but yeah that's why I wanna join your group chat!

Changbin!: Why did you decide to make it, by the way?

Chan!: I have insomnia because of my power, and I also have a lot of nightmares when I do manage to sleep, so my power has been way more negative than positive

Chan!: And I hate the narrative that powers always make your life better, or "complete", as you said

Chan!: Prophetic dreams

Changbin!: Yeah I can see why that would give you insomnia

Chan!: Yeah... Do you have anything else you want me to know, something related to powers, or do you mind me asking what you major is?

Changbin!: I don't mind! My major is music production, and I'm a junior

Chan!: No way, I do music production too!

Changbin!: I have professor Min in music production, and he used one of your tracks as an example once

Chan!: Yeah I remember him asking if he could do that, lol

Changbin!: I mean, I wasn't the only one who rapped so I'm not sure if you're talking about me

Chan!: It was a really dark track and your voice was kinda rough

Chan!: No worries! I've never found another place to talk about things like this so I think it can be helpful for a lot of people

Seungmin!: I think so, too

Chan!: Do you wanna tell me what your power is? Or do you maybe want me to tell you about my power?

Seungmin!: Could you go first, maybe?

Chan!: I have prophetic dreams which makes it really hard for me to fall asleep, and then it's hard to stay asleep, so my experience with it hasn't been very good

Chan!: I also have insomnia because of it

Seungmin!: That sounds really bad... I hope you get enough sleep

Chan!: I get as much as I can, and it's usually enough, so don't worry! : )

Chan!: But what about you? Don't feel pressured to share, but I'll listen if you do!

Seungmin!: I don't have any actual medical conditions because of mine so it might sound way easier compared to yours

Chan!: Hey, no! We don't compare pain here! If it's bad for you, it's bad for you, period. You never have to justify the way you feel

Chan: hahaha I hope that didn't come across as too aggressive, just wanted to get my point across

Seungmin!: Not too aggressive, it was nice! Thanks for that

Seungmin!: but yeah I guess my power sounds kind of good. What annoys me isn't actually my power, it's other people's reactions to it

Seungmin!: My ability is that I can understand any language that I encounter

Chan!: Woah!

Seungmin!: Yeah! I can read and write in most languages that are used today, plus some dead ones

Chan!: That sounds like it could be very useful

Chan!: How do people usually react to that?

Seungmin!: It might not be only because of my power, but a lot of people assume that things come easy to me...?

Seungmin!: I've always gotten good results in school, I guess, and since my power is related to learning, a lot of people just... blame it on my power, if that makes sense?

Seungmin!: And I don't know, it's just pretty discouraging that no one ever seems to realize how much effort I put into studying

Chan!: I don't know you, but I'm proud of you for doing so well, even if it absolutely sucks that people don't give you enough credit for it!

Chan!: Good job for studying hard!

Seungmin!: Thank you

Chan!: What's your major, by the way? Do you take any language classes?

Seungmin!: The only language class I'm taking right now is actually English

Seungmin!: I'm a photography major

Chan!: Oh, wow, and people still try to blame good results on your power? Does that only happen in English?

Seungmin!: Surprisingly, no

Seungmin!: People just hear that I have a power related to learning and assume that it makes everything easier for me, including things that have nothing to do with language

Chan!: That is a very weird assumption to make... And it doesn't make a lot of sense

Seungmin!: I know :/

Chan!: But I'm sure the other people in the support group (including me!) will offer some validation whenever you need it!

Chan!: I plan on doing it at the end of the week, unless I get too many messages today or tomorrow and have to do it earlier!

Jeongin!: i don't hate my power, i just wish i could turn it off sometimes

Chan!: How does it work? Do you share emotions with everyone who's around you, or are there limitations?

Jeongin!: whenever i have skin contact with someone, i feel what they're feeling and have no control over it

Jeongin!: i can also sense people just by looking at them, but i have control over it when i do that

Jeongin!: skin contact is just... overwhelming

Jeongin!: the thing is, i don't think i would mind it as much if i didn't have this power?

Jeongin!: i actually think i would love hugs if i didn't have to feel so many emotions every time i hug someone

Jeongin!: idk i think i've gotten used to avoiding skin contact with people

Jeongin!: all my friends and family know that i don't wanna be touched, so they avoid doing it

Chan!: Is there no way to get around it? Like wearing clothes that cover all of your skin, or something?

Jeongin!: yeah, but that's a hassle and it often ends with me accidentally touching them, anyway

Felix!: i move to korea for college last year, and didn't speak much of the language when i got here

Felix!: problem is, people don't trust me when they find out what my power is

jisung!!!: everyone has intrusive thoughts sometimes, thoughts that just pop into your head out of nowhere

jisung!!!: usually violent or very rude things that you don't actually agree with, or something you would never actually do, but the thought still gets in your head

jisung!!!: most people just dismiss those thoughts, or they're like "wtf i don't agree with that!!"

jisung!!!: and god, i hate saying people are "good" or "bad" because morality is not black and white, but some people are much worse than others

MinHET: Do you mean their thoughts, or them as people?

jisung!!!: i mean, i can deal with people who have intrusive thoughts about killing someone or setting fire to a house or who just think really offensive things, as long as they disagree with or dismiss those ideas

jisung!!!: but some people don't dismiss it, and those are the ones i would say are "bad"

jisung!!!: i have some examples of this but i'm not sure if it's too graphic...

jisung!!!: not when i'm stressed or anxious though, and these are situations that made me stressed or anxious, which means that it's not an option for me to just stop listening

jisung!!!: i've heard men think about groping or assaulting and even raping women on public transport

jisung!!!: you can't report people for things they haven't done, so the only thing i could do in those situations was try and place myself between the creep and whoever they were staring at

jisung!!!: sometimes it worked, sometimes they started thinking about me instead

jisung!!!: she's a mindreader just like me

jisung!!!: i freaked out the first therapist i went to by reading her thoughts and calling her out on everything she did, so they had to find someone who could deal with me :p

Binnie: but you mentioned drugs, so I'm just wondering if you meant like prescribed medication, or drugs that you buy from dealers?

jisung!!!: uhm, i meant dealers, but i don't really do that anymore?

jisung!!!: i have prescribed medication now, but in the past i used to take some... questionable stuff

jisung!!!: there were pills i had that would wipe my short-term memory

jisung!!!: whenever i overheard thoughts that were too bad for me to deal with, i'd take one and forget about it

jisung!!!: i used to take those pills until the side effects became too bad and i physically couldn't keep taking them
