warm hugs on the rooftop

Summary:

"I'll just lie down here and wait for the rain to end. I've heard that when the stars come out after the rain, they're brighter and more beautiful."

He smiled and stared at the roof of the tent. Pang placed his head in Wave's lap. Wave sighed exasperatedly, but fondly, and began to run his fingers through his hair.

A sweet memory relit itself in the back of Wave's mind. The memory was of the first time he and Pang were at the rooftop after he got his memories back. The stars were exceptionally beautiful that night, and yet, Wave couldn't stop looking at the person next to him.

Work Text:

The nighttime has always been a place where Wave could express his feelings, his thoughts and his fears. When accompanied by rain, wind and soft blankets, it was heavenly.

A little known fact about Wave, he loved the rain. The sound of the constant droplets of water hitting the ground, the smell of the earth, as if it has just bloomed. He loved the scenary, the fog it created, and the chill it brought him.

The only people that knew this were Pang and Claire. Pang, because Wave told him (obviously), and Claire because it had rained once when they were at a cafe and it just so happened that she saw a bright orange colour illuminating him.

As calming as the rain was, at that moment, he couldn't sleep.

Wave stared at the wall, long enough for the design to be etched into his memories. He had gotten a terrible headache that day, one that didn't cease to exist. The sound of thunder that night accompanied the massive flurry of thoughts he had.

He could not sleep. That thought kept repeating itself. Goddamn it, if his brain was so aware that he was tired, then why didn't it just sleep?

The dim light from the moon and the feel of the wind was incredibly comforting. The pleasant sounds of the wind-charm created a rhythmic melody that practically anybody could fall asleep to.

And yet, here he was, exhausted.

He clutched the blankets around him, looking at the moonlight shining through the window. He could smell the sweet scent of rain and hear its sound.

And yet, he couldn't sleep.

Damn, was this how Korn felt all the time? Tired, and desperately wanting to fall asleep, yet to no avail?

The times that he couldn't sleep, Pang would always be there, cooing him, until he inevitably fell asleep in his lap. God, Pang was so warm. He hated it. No, he didn't. Whatever.

He hadn't taken enough time to get used to having someone he trusted completely, and it scared him a lot, but he also loved the feeling. He doesn't have to look out for everyone now, and he has someone to depend on, someone he can tell everything to.

He found himself smiling. Goddamn it, he was supposed to be tired and angry, not lovesick and a fool who couldn't spend a night without thinking about his boyfriend.

He felt like going to Pang. He would definitely figure out a way to make him fall asleep. On the other hand, he didn't want to wake him up.

Pang's voice shrouded his mind, reminding him to never hesitate from asking him about anything or telling him something. However, Pang doesn't care enough about himself or his sleep, and Wave does.

He decided, ultimately, to go to the rooftop. He carried his pillow and wrapped himself around in his blanket. He wore his glasses, put his slippers on and wore his earphones, putting on his sleep playlist. He remembered to take his waterproof tent so that he wouldn't get too wet because of the rain.

Korn had a lot of experiences with not getting sleep. When he heard that Wave had trouble sleeping sometimes, (read: when Pang told the entire gifted class about him not sleeping well on some days because he was worried and wanted to find a solution) he sent him the link of a playlist that he always listened to at night and got the closest to sleeping that he possibly could.

It seemed to work quite a lot of times, Wave would admit. But Pang's hugs were better.

He decided to walk out of his dorm and took everything up to the rooftop. The rooftop was the most deserted place in the school, and it was only their gifted class that had ever even gone up there.

It was his and Pang's safe place, where they would share everything with each other. They had set almost everything up there as if it was a different home.

They had gotten a projector up there, kept portable heaters if they wanted to cook some instant noodles or heat up any food they had, cleaned charging plugs, kept pillows, blankets, food packets and spare clothes.

He had decided that going there would be comforting, and he'd manage to sleep without waking him up.

Which was why he didn't expect Pang to be up there, in an old cardigan and an umbrella, rubbing his hands to preserve whatever warmth he had left.

"Pang?"

Pang's eyes scanned through the rooftop and landed on Wave.

"Wave?" He smiled. "Oh, Wave, what are you doing here? You're gonna get a cold!" He covered him with the umbrella.

"I couldn't sleep. I came up here."

"Oh. Wait, I'll set the tent up."

"It's okay. We can both do it."

It was funny how worried he could become.

They set it up as quick as they could and crawled into it. Pang, gesturing at him to wait for a minute, walked out of the tent with the umbrella and came back, holding some water, a teabag, milk and the portable heater that they'd conveniently kept up there.

"Tea helps you in sleeping!"

Wave paused for a while. "Why were you up here?"

"Just wanted to take a walk, you know? The thunder woke me up and I assumed that it would be beautiful up here."

Pang continued making the tea like he always did for Wave, just how he liked it. Pang, however, didn't know that Wave liked it because it was made by him. He would drink anything as long as it was made by him.

Goddamn it, get a grip on yourself.

He was probably just delirious.

"Mm, Wave?" Pang said, still looking at the tea.

"Yeah?"

"You're endearing in your pyjamas."

"Shut it."

Pang laughed and poured the tea into a cup he had also brought. Handing him one, he took the blanket and placed it around Wave, wrapping him up in it.

"Are you warm enough?"

"Yeah. Are you?"

"Mhm! I'll just lie down here and wait for the rain to end.

Pang looked up at him. His eyes were like the stars.

Pang wrapped his hands around Wave's and snuggled up.

Wave thought that he looked absolutely adorable, and so he placed his blanket on him. Pang's eyebrows furrowed up, then relaxed.

"Come on. Let's cuddle." Pang muttered softly.

He hummed in response and placed a pillow on one end of the tent. He gently placed Pang's head on it and then lied down next to him.

Pang opened his eyes and wrapped his arms around him, fitting into the crook of his neck. Pang ruffled up his hair, grinning when he managed to do it.

Both of them had the blanket over them now, as they hugged each other as tight as they could. Pang kissed him, and for a second, he didn't feel like anything else was of importance.

He had everything he needed to be content in that moment. The sounds of the rain, the warmth he felt in the cold atmosphere, the periodic breeze, Pang's arms around him and his soft smile that always adorned his face when they cuddled.

Pang buried his face in Wave's shoulder, as Wave pressed kisses in his hair. Pang giggled, and Wave couldn't help but kiss him for the second time.

Wave basked in his warmth, and he loved it so much that he didn't even realise that the rain had stopped. It was Pang who did.

"Wave! The rain! It's stopped! We have to see the stars. Come on, come on!"

He got up and crawled out of the tent to look at the sky. The view was breathtaking.

The stars were shining so brightly, and he could see millions of them in a single glance. It was a beautiful contrast to the dark sky in the background. The stars were so much larger and uplifting, illuminating almost the entire sky.

The clouds were still present, although they were not able to stop the shine of the stars from coming through and making the sky as gorgeous as it looked.

Wave felt warm hands embrace him from behind. He rolled his eyes. They stood there in silence for some time and just looked at the stars.

"Wave. The stars are beautiful. But none are as beautiful as you."

"Shut up. I love you."

They soon decided that it was time for them to go because Wave needed sleep. Pang decided to stay at Wave's dorm and help him sleep, although now, Wave decided that he wasn't going to need help.

Just being with Pang for some time, knowing that he was there, having the certainty that he would be able to hold his hand if something went wrong, that he remembered him and loved him: just that was enough.
