Work Header

Summer nights and stolen glances

Summary:

It’s summer holiday after fifth year. Ravenclaw student Remus is back home in his parent’s village and is shocked to find that his crush is there on holiday. When the Gryffindor boy doesn’t recognize him from Hogwarts, Remus does what anyone not knowing how to tell the truth would do; nothing.

Work Text:

The feeling of freedom that filled Remus at the feel of warm summer air rushing by him made him push his bike to go faster. The day was warm and sunny.

The summer holiday had done him good. The OWLs had been a trial, he felt like he’d been locked up in that stuffy library for months. The careers advice talks with Flitwick hadn’t been all that cheery either. Flitwick had wanted Remus to think big, but it was painfully obvious that Remus actual options weren’t that many. In the end he had just opted at choosing as many advanced courses he could, keeping the door open to as many career paths as possible. He knew that he would have a hard time finding a job on account of being a werewolf, so it was best not to limit himself.

Arriving at the small village store he could see Ben already sitting on the bench just outside. The brown-haired boy smiled at seeing him.

“Sup?”

Remus pulled to a stop and parked his bike just beside Ben “I’m alright. You?”

Remus had lost most of the few friends he’d had in muggle school when he left for Hogwarts. It had been hard to keep things normal when he stopped learning the same things as them, and when he couldn’t tell them anything of his new school. But Ben still called sometimes to hang out, like today. Remus loosened his backpack from the carrier and put it on his back.

“Good enough at least.” Ben answered, “Mom wanted me to go over to the summer tenants and offer to mow their lawns and such”.

“What did you say?”

“I said that I would have, but that I didn’t want to strip them of their opportunity of experiencing a real summer in the country” He grinned at Remus and then shook his head. “And you know how that family is, they never want anything to do with the rest of us anyway”.

Remus nodded. The Potters acted like any wizarding family would, except Ben wouldn’t know that of course. Ben motioned with his head to the pride pin on the strap of Remus backpack.

“Flashing our colors today, are we?”

“Worried they’ll mistake you for my boyfriend?”

Ben grinned. “They’ would never believe it. Posh boarding schoolboy seen together with local disappointment” Remus let out an amused snort. The pin had been a gift from Ben a few years earlier.

They made their way inside the store, the bell above the door chimed as they entered and the woman behind the counter looked up and smiled.

“Good morning Ben” She squinted at Remus “Is that you, Remus Lupin?”

“Good morning Mrs. Rogers” Remus went to pick up a few things for his parents before heading over to Ben by the ice cream. As they paid Mrs. Rogers peered at Remus.

“How’s that school of yours going?”

Remus gave her a small smile “It’s good”

“Yeah? Where was it again?”

“It’s up north”

“Right” Mrs. Rogers nodded. She seemed to be wanting to ask something more but changed her mind as the two boys made their way to leave. She turned to Ben “Say hello to your mother for me”

“Will do Mrs. Rogers.”

They left the store and started eating their ice cream.

“She’s a snoop that one” Ben said, referring to Mrs. Rogers.

“It’s alright” Remus said.

“Oh, but you wouldn’t know since you’re never here. I think she knew about me and Susan before my own mother did even”

Remus let out a laugh.

“How long have you’ve been together now?”

“We were 14, so two years now”

“Wow”

“I know right” Ben looked up at him “You want to head down to the lake?”

“Sure”

They got on their bikes. Lush vegetation passed them by as they went, the air smelling sweetly of summer flowers. It was almost noon. It had gotten warmer and the sun was glaring. Remus could feel his backpack sticking to the back of his t-shirt. They arrived at the lake and got off their bikes.

There were a few cars parked. Most people went to the larger beach more south, but this place was popular among the locals. Remus fiddled with the lock to his bike.

“Look, that’s the tenant’s son.” Ben said, sounding unimpressed “Surprising he would show up here like us regular mortals, one would think they had their private pool”

Remus looked up over to where Ben was looking. Walking up the small path were James Potter and Sirius Black.

The sight of Sirius made Remus do a double take. Remus had, together with half of Hogwarts, been crushing on him since third year. It was immensely stupid; Sirius was way out of Remus league and they had never really talked to each other since they were in different houses.

Sirius black longish hair was somewhat messier than normal, and he had a tan that suited him ridiculously well. He was grinning at something James had said, his eyes twinkling mischievously.

Remus felt like his breath had been taken away. When he dropped the key to his bike he forced himself to pull his attention back to what he was doing. He locked his bike before joining Ben and started heading down towards the path.

The Potters had been coming to Remus parent’s village for a few weeks every summer for a couple of years, but it was rare to see them out and about so Remus had actually never run in to James outside of Hogwarts before, and certainly not Sirius.

They were dressed so typically like purebloods trying to look like muggles it was almost painful. Their bathing shorts were out of style and their shirts were badly matched. Even so butterflies erupted in Remus stomach. Feeling self-conscious he quickly pulled a hand through his hair. It felt so strange meeting them here. It was like Remus had never been sure that they actually existed outside of Hogwarts.

Spotting them, James stopped and smiled. Remus nerves suddenly got worse. Ben didn’t know Remus went to the same school as James Potter.

“Hey” James eyes passed over Remus and over to Ben, then he pulled out a hand. “My name’s James, and this is Sirius” he motioned to Sirius. “You guys live here?” he made no sign of recognizing Remus whatsoever.

Ben reluctantly shook his hand. Remus was so shocked he didn’t even attempt to take James hand when James turned to him. When Remus didn’t move or say anything, Ben answered “Yeah. You’re staying at the villa, right?”

James nodded. “We came here yesterday. Do you guys know what there is to do around here?” He gave them his trademark Potter smile. It seemed to work on Ben. With a hesitant smile of his own, he started telling James about the surroundings and about any upcoming local events.

Remus looked over at Sirius who returned his gaze. Remus stomach flipped, did Sirius really not recognize him? Sirius arched a brow, questioning Remus stare. Not knowing what else to do, Remus blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “You’ve got a feather in your hair”

James and Ben got quiet. Sirius hand shoot up. He gave Remus a sheepish grin as he pulled out a brown owl feather from his tussled hair.

Ben gave Sirius an incredulous look. “Well” he said slowly, “it was nice meeting you” then he nudged Remus to start walking.

“Yeah, you too” James said, still smiling yet now a bit forcedly “Maybe we’ll see you around?”

“Yeah, maybe” Ben said and then they went down towards the lake. When they had gotten out of earshot Ben whispered to Remus “So, is it just me or was it something weird about those guys?”

Remus could only nod. They found Susan sitting on a blanket on the grass close to the small beach.

“Hey guys!” She went up and gave Ben a kiss.

“You up for a swim?” Ben asked her and she nodded, Ben glanced over to Remus. “You’ll stay here with the stuff?”

“Yeah”

Remus sat down on the blanket and pulled out a book as Ben and Susan went down to the water. Remus couldn’t think about anything else than James and Sirius. The way they had looked at him with zero recognition. His mind traveled to all the times the last two years that he had followed Sirius with his gaze.

It wasn’t like they were anything even close to friends. James and Sirius were popular, everybody knew them. They were handsome, brilliant and rebellious. Remus was quiet, private and polite. They were in different houses, James and Sirius were Gryffindors while Remus a Rawenclaw, and Remus had gone out of his way not to draw attention to himself, but still. Five years. Five years of sharing classes on and off they didn’t even know who he was?

He thought of when he first really noticed Sirius. It had been in the end of third year and they had been studying werewolves in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Remus had been so nervous that day that he had vomited before breakfast. Their teacher, Professor Brown, was a prejudiced man and had made it his mission to teach his students what he considered “correct values”. He was also one of the few teachers Remus had had during his time on Hogwarts that openly showed his disliking of Remus being allowed at the school. He had on numerous occasions given Remus detention for missing class after the full moon.

The class had been torture, Professor Brown had gone on and on about how they were beasts, how they even in human form weren’t to be trusted. They had just been about to start discussing signs on how to discover a werewolf when the other students had started laughing.

Remus who had been staring down at his parchment had looked up. Professor Brown had looked as confused as Remus felt. Then Remus saw the blackboard.

My name is Professor Brown and I like spreading lies about things I’m too stupid to understand.

“What are you laughing about?” Professor Brown asked the class, angry. As he spoke new writing appeared on the board.

I don’t know a thing about werewolves, except what I’ve read in tales of Beedle the Bard.

The class was laughing loudly now. Professor Brown turned around and his eyes landed on the blackboard.

“Who’s doing this?” He tried to reach for the chalk, but it hopped away, and he stumbled.

I don’t really care for facts. The only thing I care about is punishing students since it turns me on.

Professor Brown whipped out his wand, but just as he was about to make the chalk stop writing a Dungbomb exploded, filling the whole classroom with and intense putrid odor.

I also love the smell of my own farts.

The students had all screamed and tried to run out of the classroom. Professor Brown had locked the door and shouted at them to sit down. He’d made the odor vanish and erased the writing on the board. He caught the chalk, then he turned to the class. His eyes were burning.

“None of you are leaving this classroom before I find the one responsible”

His eyes had traveled over the students, before locking on Remus.

“Go to your master” He said to the chalk.

The chalk had started wiggling, and then it flew off to the back row where someone caught it.

Remus turned to see Sirius Black holding the chalk, with a defiant smile plastered on his face.

Since that day, Remus hadn’t been able to get Sirius Black out of his mind. But Sirius didn’t know who he was. He let out a sigh and laid back on Susan’s blanket and stared up at the sky.

It was two in the morning and Remus couldn’t sleep. It was warm, too warm and he felt restless. After twisting and turning another twenty minutes he gave up and got up. He needed to cool down, to clear his head. He dressed quietly before sneaking outside to his bike. It was still warm outside.

Arriving at the lake he pulled his bike all the way down to a wooden bench down by the water. He pulled off his t-shirt and went out.

As he broke trough the surface his body relaxed. The water was cooling. He took a few strokes underwater before returning to the surface.

As he turned to get back to shore, he could see someone sitting on the bench where he had left his bike. It was Sirius.

Remus stiffened. The summer night was bright so he could clearly see that is was him sitting over there in his leather jacket. A rush of emotions ran through Remus as he got out of the water and picked up the towel that he had left by the shore. He glanced over. Sirius was looking out over the water. Remus dried off and pulled on his t-shirt before walking stiffly up to his bike.

“Hi” He greeted.

“Hey” Sirius gave him a brief glance before returning his gaze over to the water.

Remus wanted to ask what he was doing here, but there was something that made him hesitate. Instead he started fiddling with the lock on his bike. He had to get his dad to fix it. He glanced at Sirius before taking off, but Sirius seemed to be somewhere else.

Remus had slept until late. When he got up, he found his mom sitting in the kitchen preparing lunch. A warm breeze coming in through the open windows made the flowery curtains flutter.

“Good morning, honey” She was peeling carrots by the kitchen table. Her long hair attached in a bun.

“Good morning” he went to get a glass of water. “Do you need help with lunch?”

“No, it’s almost finished”

Remus sat himself down at the table and started watching his mother work. The long stripes of peel landing in a porcelain bowl with a flower print.

“Is dad at work?”

“Yes, he had to go in early today.” She peered at her son “Did you need him for something?”

“It’s just the lock on my bike, it’s not working great”

His mother hummed “He’ll be home before seven”

Remus nodded. As he watched his mother he thought of Sirius, and what he could have been doing at the lake last night.

“Oh” Hope said suddenly “I almost forgot; Ben called”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah, it was something about a social event up by the grill tomorrow night. He wondered if you wanted to go. I promised you would call him back”

“Alright”

Remus played with the rings of water his glass had left on the table. He wasn’t a fan of those parties. It usually meant sitting around by himself while Ben was off having conversations with friends of his that Remus didn’t know anymore. And people usually got drunk. But maybe. He hadn’t been able to shake the feeling of restlessness that had come over him. Maybe doing something different would be good.

He thought of the last party he had been to. It was after the last OWLs exam and almost all of the fifth-year students had met at the lake. It had evolved into a party and people had been milling about, laughing and celebrating the end of the year.

He and Marlene had been standing by the big tree. James was joking around with Sirius and that other guy, Pettergrew, a bit further away. James saying that the boggart in the Defense Against the Dark Arts examination had taken the form of Snape, that Slytherin boy, claiming that they had slept together.

Marlene had gotten angry, whispering to Remus that they were probably homophobes. Remus knew that it was probably more about disliking Snape then homophobia, but it was bad either way.

Remus knew better than to speak up in front of burly Gryffindors, but as a prefect he did have a responsibility for preventing bullying. They weren’t really allowed to use magic in their role as prefects, but Remus saw it more as 'it’s not allowed if you get caught'.

"Mimble wimble" he whispered and made a small flick with his wand, and the group had suddenly gotten tongue-tied.

He watched as Sirius, still laughing, tried to get the words out. His mouth moving as if trying to form the right words. When Sirius realized they had gotten cursed he whipped around, searching the crowd for the culprit. But there were too many people. Remus hadn’t been able to help the grin forming on his lips watching him. As always, it felt ridiculously good not getting caught, and more so when it involved seeing Sirius Black getting flustered.

“You know it’s pretty weird checking someone out after you’ve cursed them” he felt Marlene whispering in his ear.

“I thought you knew better than to kink shame” He whispered back, and Marlene returned his grin.

Sirius and the others had soon stopped trying to talk about Snape and had gone back to being the life of the party. Marlene had tried to make Remus join in on a game of exploding snap but sensing that her other friends hadn’t really wanted him to join, he had declined.

A lot of his classmates avoided him. He didn’t blame them. Even though they didn’t know about him being a werewolf, the scars and the rumors of his mother being deathly ill made people uncomfortable. So, he had stayed put, every now and then stealing a glance at Sirius and his mischievous eyes.

That night Remus woke again at two in the morning. He’d always been a light sleeper close to the full moon, but this was different. Something was clearly bothering him, and he didn’t have to think twice to know what it was.

He got up and went to the lake. There was no one there when he arrived. He realized that he’d hoped he would find Sirius sitting there like the night before. He felt a bit foolish.

He parked his bike by the bench and then went down to the wooden jetty leading out into the water, walking out to its far end. Sitting down and removing his shoes he let his feet dangle from the edge. As he watched his feet disappearing under the water, he heard a noise coming from behind him. He turned to see Sirius coming down the path from the parking lot.

Butterflies appeared in Remus stomach. He was really here. Remus turned to face the water again, his palms sweaty. He listened as Sirius sat down on the bench. He wondered what he was doing here. Was he also here thinking about someone? When Remus feet got cold, he got up and made his way over to his bike over by the bench. As he got close Sirius turned to look at him.

“Do you always swim at three in the morning?”

“Do you always stare at people who swim at three in the morning?” Remus retorted. He winced inwardly as soon as the words had left his mouth. But Sirius just let out an amused snort.

“I have trouble sleeping” Remus continued after a moment.

“Yeah?” Sirius said, returning his gaze to the water. “Me too”

Remus just stood for a moment, watching him. Sirius looked solemn. But he was beautiful. Remus bent down and was just about to start fiddling with his lock when Sirius spoke again.

“Can I ask you something?”

Remus stopped, looking up. “Yeah?”

Sirius was looking at him. “Are you gay?”

Remus froze.

“You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. I just… I saw your pin yesterday”

“Right” Remus sat up and swallowed. “Why do you want to know?”

“I’m gay”

As he said it, Remus felt his eyes widen in surprise. He couldn’t help himself “You are?”

“Yeah” Sirius looked out over the water.

Remus paused for a moment; this was unexpected. Then he stood “I’m bisexual”

“Yeah?” Sirius glanced at him. “Do your parents know?”

“They do”

“What did they say when they found out?”

Remus hesitated, then sat down beside Sirius on the bench. He thought about it for a moment. Remembering how his father had sighed and asked him if being a werewolf wasn’t enough and his mother hitting his father hard with the ladle in her hands.

“My mom was fine with it. My dad… seemed to think it was some kind of choice that I could undo. But he came around”

Sirius nodded.

“Mine threw me out”

Remus turned to look at him. Sirius face was resigned. Remus knew of the Black family. It wasn’t a secret that Sirius wasn’t really honoring the family name, but Remus had no idea it was that bad.

At first Remus didn’t know what to say.

“That sucks”

Sirius let out a laugh

“Yeah”

They sat in silence for a while.

“Do you think they will change their mind?”

Sirius shook his head. “No.” He started scraping with his fingernail on the wooden bench. “But it’s alright. We didn’t really see eye to eye before that either”.

Remus nodded.

Sirius reached into his front pocket and withdrew a packet of cigarettes. He held out the package for Remus.

“You want one?”

Remus just stared at it

“Where did you get that?”

Sirius smile got mischievous “I nicked it”. Remus felt his stomach clench.

When Remus didn’t make an effort to take one Sirius pulled one out for himself before putting the package back in his pocket. He started fumbling with a lighter and Remus could see he probably didn’t know how to use one.

“Here” Remus took the lighter from Sirius hands. His fingers tingled as they touched. He made it light up and then held it out for Sirius to light his cigarette, his hand shaking slightly.

Sirius grinned “thanks”.

The sat together while Sirius smoked. It was only when Remus started to feel cold that he felt like he should go home.

He got up and started fiddling with the lock to his bike.

“Can I ride with you?”

Remus looked up.

“Sure”

They walked up the path to the road. Remus sat up on the bike.

“You can sit on the carrier”

Sirius nodded and sat down grabbing the saddle for stability and Remus pushed away. They wobbled and Sirius grabbed on to Remus t-shirt. Remus found balance, and Sirius let go. They rode up to the villa in silence. Sirius got off and gave him a smile “See you around”. Then he walked in through the gates.

Remus didn’t return to the lake until three nights later. He’d spent the first one with Ben, the next it was the full moon.

Exhausted after the transformation he’d slept the whole day and then the next, and when he finally woke up it was seven in the evening. When night came, he made his way over to the lake again. He didn’t really know what he was doing. Even if Sirius was there this whole thing was stupid. They weren’t friends, and Remus kind of felt like he was lying. But he just had to go.

When he arrived he found Sirius already there. Remus stopped further away and paused, feeling his breath hitching in his throat as he studied him. Sirius didn’t seem to have noticed him. The moonlight was reflecting in his dark hair. It felt like something rare, to be able to see him like this. Not surrounded by his friends, not showing off. Suddenly he turned and looked at Remus.

Remus pulled his bike closer. He rested it against the bench and took off his shoes. He went down to the water and started walking along the small beach. He could feel Sirius watching him but didn’t look over. Feeling the sand between his toes calmed him. He was still tense after the full moon. After a while he went up to where Sirius was sitting.

Sirius gave him a small smile “I thought I had scared you away”

Remus smiled back “Don’t overestimate yourself”. He stood a moment by the bench, not sure what to do. Then he sat himself down beside Sirius.

“So, my tragic backstory doesn’t scare you?”

“Why would it?” when Remus met Sirius gaze Sirius looked away, the small smile still playing on his lips.

He shrugged. “I don’t know. Most people get nervous when I talk about my family”

“Maybe I’m not like most people”

“Maybe you’re not”

Neither said anything for a while. Sirius was playing with the lighter in his hands. Remus shifted on the bench.

“You’ve always lived here?”

Remus hesitated. He settled for being vague. “In a way”

He decided that if Sirius would ask him what he meant by that; he would tell him. But Sirius didn’t.

“It’s pretty”

Remus nodded, but after a pause he said “It’s hard to say when you’ve grown up here. Sometimes I’ve wondered if it’s just everywhere else that’s… unpretty”

Sirius let out an amused snort. Remus looked over at him.

“You don’t think it’s boring here?”

“Haven’t really been here that long” Sirius put the lighter back in his pocket “Do you?”

Remus watched as Sirius pulled a hand through his hair. When Sirius met his gaze, he looked away quickly. Then he cleared his throat “Well, I’m pretty boring myself so I might not be the best judge”

“Why do you think you’re boring?”

Remus shrugged “I don’t know… I have to study a lot. I guess sometimes it feels like I’m missing out on other things”

“Like what?”

“Like nicking a pack of cigarettes” He gave Sirius a crocked smile.

Sirius smirked, eyes twinkling. “They’re right here you know, if you want one you only have to ask”

Remus shook his head, smile still tugging on his lips

The hooting of an owl could be heard in the distance. Sirius shifted, leaning back on the bench and looking up at the starry night sky.

“You believe in Karma?”

Remus did only have a vague idea of what Karma actually meant, but the idea of bad things happening to you as a punishment for your bad deeds didn’t feel right “No”.

“What makes you so sure?”

Remus peered over at Sirius. “I’m not” he turned his gaze back towards the lake¨ “But I find that there are a lot of people who don’t get what they deserve. Good and bad” He paused, then added “that’s just life”

Later when Remus had given Sirius a ride home Sirius turned to him.

“We’re leaving tomorrow”

“So soon?” Remus looked at Sirius and tried not to sound disappointed.

“Yeah” Sirius returned his gaze.

Remus said nothing for a while. He had to tell him that they knew each other. Even if he hadn’t recognized Remus before he probably would when school started again.

“You know, Sirius, I- “

Before he could finish his sentence, Sirius leaned in and kissed him. Remus froze and Sirius pulled back.

“Sorry” Sirius gave him a sheepish smile “I just… had to give it a go”

At first Remus just stared. But when the reality of what had happened hit him, he let his bike fall to the ground. He took Sirius face in his hands and kissed him back. Sirius answered immediately. He tasted like mint, and thankfully not like cigarette. It was warm, and wet. Sirius pulled him closer.

When they stopped, Remus heart was pounding. Sirius backed away. “Maybe we’ll see each other, yeah?”

Remus just nodded. Sirius smiled at him, and then he was on his way through the gates of the villa.

On the ride home Remus felt like he wasn’t real. Sirius Black had kissed him, and he had kissed him back. Thinking about it made him flush with heat, he felt dizzy.

It wasn’t until about halfway back home when the panic hit him. How was he going to explain this in September?

“I still can’t believe this” Marlene said as they sat down in the carriage. Remus had just pulled her into one after seeing Sirius and his friends further away on the path from the train station. Remus had told Marlene what had happened as soon as they saw each other on the train. She had laughed, and then when she realized it hadn’t been a joke, she had laughed even harder.

“Remus Lupin, Don Juan extraordinaire”

Remus buried his face in his hands.

“What I don’t understand is why you didn’t tell him?”

Remus let out a small groan. “First because I was angry, then because I thought it was too late. Then it was too late.”

“I’m going to be honest with you Remus, I’m impressed” She laughed again “well your only choice is obviously to hide. You can stay up in your dorm and I’ll send up homework”

“I’m serious Marlene, I don’t know what to do”

She leaned forward and pulled his hands away from his face. “Seriously speaking, he’s a complete arse for not recognizing you in the first place. And it was just a kiss, that he initiated. Pull yourself together”.

Remus let out a deep sigh.

Marlene started laughing again.

Remus made it a whole week before Sirius saw him. The thought of going up to him first had occurred to Remus. But a part of him wished he could just continue to be invisible, so in the end he’d done nothing. Burying the part of him that wanted Sirius to know beneath the fear of Sirius rejecting him.

It was their first lesson in Advanced Defense Against the Dark Arts. Remus was called up to demonstrate the Imperturbable Charm. As he turned to go back to his seat, he caught Sirius looking at him with a shocked expression, recognition passing over his face. When Remus was back in his seat he couldn’t focus. His heart beating furiously in his chest. He was so nervous that at first, he didn’t react when the lesson was over.

He could feel Sirius watching him as he got up and slowly gathered his things. When he was done, he took a deep breath and turned to meet Sirius gaze. Sirius motioned for him to follow and he did.

Sirius led him to an empty classroom. When Remus entered Sirius closed the door behind him.

“Who are you?”

Remus swallowed and leaned against the top of a table. He forced himself to look at Sirius.

“Remus Lupin. We’ve been in the same herbology class since first year.”

“But it’s you, isn’t it? From this summer?”

Remus nodded and Sirius went silent. Then he asked, “Why didn’t you say anything?”

Remus swallowed.  “I don’t know. At first, I thought you would recognize me. Then when you didn’t, I didn’t really know how to tell you. But I was about to tell you, the night before you left. Just before…” He went silent.

“I can’t believe I didn’t recognize you”

The situation was so absurd that Remus couldn’t help the smile tugging his lips. “Yeah” he looked away and tried to steady himself. “I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean for anything of this to happen.” He looked back at Sirius “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you”.

Sirius was just looking at him. Remus started to feel self-conscious and turned his gaze down to the floor.

Sirius stepped closer. He was right in front of Remus.

“Can I kiss you again?”

Remus looked up, eyes widening in surprise “What?”

Sirius eyes shifted before settling on Remus.

“When I saw you…” He hesitated.  “I’ve been thinking about you”.

There was a moment of silence.

“You have?”

“A lot actually” Sirius cheeks was a faint shade of pink. “Mostly I’m just glad to see you again”

Remus stared at him.

“I’ve had a pretty shitty summer. The whole thing with my parents, and coming out as gay… I’ve been feeling like I’m just here to fuck things up.” His eyes shifted again “But then you came along, wearing that pride pin in the middle of nowhere…” He swallowed “It felt like I wasn’t so alone anymore. Being with you, by the lake…”

Remus didn’t know what to say.

Sirius continued “I get it if you think I’m an idiot. But I thought that maybe, if you want, we could try to get to know each other for real”

Remus blinked.

“You’re saying you want to date me?”

Sirius smile was cheeky, but his voice shaky when he answered “Yeah”.

There was a pause.

“Alright”

“Alright?”

“Yeah” Remus gave him an embarrassed smile.

He could see a blush creeping up Sirius cheeks.

“So…”

Remus reached out and hesitantly pulled Sirius against him. Sirius closed the space between them and kissed him. His lips were soft and warm, and Remus thought his heart would stop.

They pulled away when they heard noises coming from outside the classroom. Sirius face was flushed. Suddenly he grinned and pulled out a hand for Remus to shake.

“Sirius Black”

Remus grinned and took his hand.

“Remus Lupin”

“You want to go make out in a broom cupboard?”

“Why yes, I do”
