Work Text:

It was late. The stars were out. The moon was full. The city was bright and somehow still bustling, and yet it was the calmest Killer had ever felt. Maybe it was because being in a dark, victorian castle wasn't the most calming setting when you've grown up on loud sounds, bright lights, and the feeling of the world revolving around you. But that was just them, personally.

At that moment, Killer was sitting on the edge of a tall city building, watching the traffic chug along and the people speed walk down the sidewalks. Their boyfriend told them to wait here for him while he got some stuff for Killer, so they listened. Though they hadn't expected "some stuff" to take nearly ten minutes... they were tempted to text him, but at the same time, they felt like they might accidentally pressure Cross. It had to be important if it was taking this long, right?

"I'm finally here, I'm so sorry!!" Speak of the devil. Cross rushed over beside Killer, pressing a quick kiss to their cheek before sitting down. "I swear I didn't mean to take so long, I ended up getting nervous but I realized I don't know if you'd even like it, so I spent the whole time wondering if I should return it or-"

"Cross," Killer interjected, "I haven't even seen what it is yet, calm down, babe! I'm sure if you were that worried about me liking it, I'll love it." Cross flushed a light purple, averting his gaze.

"You're... you're probably right, yeah. Uh, here, then. I hope it's not too overbearing, or something." Cross chuckled nervously, pulling the wrapped gift out of his jacket.

The wrapping paper was a pale orange covered in cats. Various doodles, some sleeping, some playing with yarn, doing a polite little sit, things of that nature. It felt more rough compared to typical, sleek wrapping paper, bringing Killer to the idea that Cross made it himself. The idea vaguely amused them, and since they're not exactly known for keeping their mouth shut, they voiced their thoughts.

"Gee, Cross, did you make this gift wrapping just for lil' ol' me?" They teased, but the silence Cross gave them made them hesitate. They turned their gaze to their boyfriend, whose hood was drawn over his head now. "Did... Did you actually make the wrapping for me?"

"I couldn't find any good ones at the stores we usually go to, and I thought you'd like it more if I made it specifically for you!! I even added a few that looked like you, but I realize now that's probably really cheesy and-"

"Cross, oh my god, shut up, you dork." Killer chuckled, leaning over to give Cross a quick kiss. "I love it, hun, I love that you went out of your way to make it special for me." Cross stared in surprise for a moment before looking away, flustered.

"Thank you... B-But that's just the wrapping, you don't need to get sappy for the paper around the actual gift!" Killer rolled their eyes playfully.

"Alright, alright! I hear ya." They chuckled, finding where the paper met and gently unwrapped it. It was hard to see for a moment, the lights from the ground cast a shadow over the gift, but their eyes soon adjusted and Killer stared in shock. Cross pressed his "lips" together, a nervous and hopeful look on his face.

"Do... Do you like it?" He asked sheepishly. The guard's partner didn't reply, however, they only slowly picked the flag up and stared. It had four stripes, the first yellow, then white, then purple, and the last black. Between each stripe was a faint blue thread, glowing with magic. "I-I, uh, asked Error for help putting it together, I hope that's okay..."

   "Cross?"

   "Y-Yeah??"

"Cross, this is the best thing I could've gotten," they said with a stunned laugh. A smile slowly crept onto their face. "You got my flag! Oh my god, holy shit!!" They covered their mouth, laughing with glee. "Cross?" They looked up at their boyfriend, a giddy smile on their face. The guard's heart melted at the sight.

"Killer?" Cross replied with a chuckle.

   "Cross!"

   "Killer!"

   "Cross!!"

   "Killer!!

   " Cross!! "

"Oh my stars, Killer, what!!" Killer burst out laughing, grabbing onto Cross' shoulder for support. The guard, confused, desperately tried to ask what was so funny, but Killer's laugh... He had to admit it was extremely contagious. Soon, the two were both giggling and cackling, the sounds of the city below muted by each other. Moments like this were special for the couple; moments where the rest of the world melted away and there was only the soft warmth of the other's SOUL.

On the job, all they can manage is small smiles at each other, fleeting touches, whispered words of care. Their boss is accepting, yes, she's caring when she wants to be; but she spends too much time focusing on her work, her wrath for her brother. They still don't know what the poor soul did wrong. All they know is they need to listen and trust her words. They don't need that here, though. Alone, unbothered, only the mindless ambiance of the world around them. Killer sometimes wishes they had more times like these.

Eventually, their laughter died down into quiet giggles, Killer slumping into Cross' arms with a goofy grin. "Thank you, babe, I love the gift." They muttered. Their boyfriend chuckled lightly.

"There's, uh, one more thing actually," Cross reached into his coat pocket, pulling out two small rectangular patches. One the same as Killer's flag, the other a light blue, pink, and white. "Nightmare said she was going to take us to a parade soon, so I thought we could match with these!" Killer looked at the patches, reading the small lettering on them. ' I love my boyfriend ' on theirs and 'I love my partner' on his. The eyeless skeleton snorted.

"God, you're so gay." they teased, leaning into Cross's jacket fluff.

"Oh please, says you of all people." Cross chuckled, resting his chin on the smaller ones head. "Happy pride, dork. I love you." Killer smiled, looking up to press a kiss to the guard's jaw.

   "I love you too, Cross."
