“It’s pretty, your fate mark.”
“I hate it,” Kento mumbled, looking down at his boney knees not happy to be wearing shorts but needing them to help him deal with the heat.
Yu’s head tilted in confusion as he stared down at the place where the mark was, Kento was carefully pulling the fabric down to cover the mark on his thigh. It wasn’t the most obvious fate mark Yu had ever seen, it was barely visible. Yu’s own was displayed on his ribs, he hadn’t ever seen someone with one so easy to hide like him before.
“Do you know who it is? I found my fate on one of those online connection forums! I can show you and then maybe-”
“Yu, please drop it.”
Yu blinked slowly at the solemn request from his best friend and only classmate. Kento rested his forehead on his knees, hiding his face from view. They were currently on a brief break from training for the upcoming crossover event. Despite the fact they weren’t participating, they were training with the older students to help them prepare for the event. Yu had been enjoying spending time with their senpais, he couldn’t keep away from Suguru but that didn’t mean he hadn’t noticed Kento’s change in demeanour.
“Don’t you want to find your fate?”
“There’s someone I like,” Kento mumbled, lifting his head and resting his chin on his knees. “I like them, and I hate the idea that someone else could walk into my life and become the most important person. How can anyone fall in love, if there’s some ideal person out there waiting for us? What about someone we meet and learn to love? Surely that love is stronger than fate.”
Yu watched the way Kento’s eyes started to glisten, it wasn’t like the other boy to get emotional. Yu shifted closer to Kento and rested his head on the boy’s shoulder, watching as Ieri and Suguru threw various items at Satoru to try and block with his infinity with some success. Kento let out a shaky sigh before tilting his head to rest over Yu’s.
“Do you like Satoru?”
The small amount of relaxation that Kento had in his body instantly disappeared when the teen tensed dramatically, his head shooting away from the other boy. He slipped out from beside Yu and stood to retrieve one of the bottles of water in the nearby cooler. Yu grinned at the blush on Kento’s face, he must have caught the blonde teen by surprise with his question. Kento took a long drink of water, staying stood away from Yu as if the distance would protect him from the invasive line of questioning.
“You found your fate on a message board, are you sure that’s safe?” Kento asked, changing the subject away from himself.
“Yeah! We’re going on a date in Shibuya next weekend.”
“Please be safe,” Kento told Yu quietly, before sitting down slightly further away this time.
“Always am!” Yu gave Kento a thumbs up before standing to stretch his still aching legs. “Want to get back to it?”
“I guess.” Kento sighed.
In an awkward twist of fate, Yu’s soulmate turned out to be Suguru. The date still went ahead, despite them both being flustered by their awkwardness at the surprise twist of fate. They both had fun once the initial awkwardness passed, they showed off their fate-marks on their ribs, had food together and spent time shopping in Shibuya. Towards the end of their date, they started to make their way back to Jujutsu Tech together, both teens had told their respective best friends at some point in the day of their weird coincidence.
They both shared laughs over their friend’s reactions to the strange coincidence. Satoru ended up being the most surprised by the turn of events and Kento being happy that Yu could actually act on his crush on Suguru. Then the conversation drifted to said friends and school, all the things that the teens shared that they’d never really had time to discuss alone before.
“Satoru is totally smitten with Nanami, you know.” Suguru confided as they found seats together on the train.
“Really?”
“Yeah, but he’s a total idiot. He seems to think that pissing Nanami off is the way to get the teen to notice him, he’s like a little kid with a crush. If Nanami had pigtails I’m sure you’d find Satoru pulling them.” Suguru shook his head, looking down at the hand holding his fondly. “He even tried to get Ieri to take his medical file so he could check his fate mark is the same.”
Yu didn’t want to tell Suguru straight away that he suspected that Kento reciprocated the crush, not without ensuring Suguru wouldn’t just spill to his best friend straight away. Yu wondered if he could find out about how Satoru felt about his fate mark if it was even that important that he find the person with it. But first, he needed to know the most important thing that could perhaps save his best friend from all his agonizing.
“What does Gojo’s fate mark look like?”
Suguru flipped open his phone and found a picture to show his date, it was a picture of them both on the beach after completing a successful mission away and both boys marks were on full display. Yu gasped when he saw the same mark he’d noticed on Kento just weeks before. The reaction must have given him away, as Suguru’s eyebrows raised at his response before a smirk settled over his features. Yu grimaced as he realised he had given himself away completely, Yu shyly smiled at Suguru and squeezed the older teen’s hand.
“So, are we going to help them out?”
“I mean, they’re oblivious. If we don’t help them will it ever happen?”
Yu grinned at Suguru’s words, that settled things then.
Satoru groaned as he waited for Suguru to meet him at their usual crepe shop, he was late again. The other teen had asked to hang out and meet him here, insisting they spend some quality time together away from the school. Ever since his best friend had found his own soulmate, that had left him very little time to spend with Satoru outside of missions. In truth Satoru had been eager to spend time with Suguru, the other part of the strongest duo always gave the best advice for dealing how to deal with his own disastrous love life.
Earlier that week in an attempt to do something nice with Kento he had brought the teen some food and drink to where he was sitting alone reading in the shade. Satoru was planning for them to maybe eat together and talk.
But he had become so distracted by Kento’s long golden hair shining in the sun he had tripped and thrown the food all over his crush. Kento had looked furious to the point of tears, the book he had reading was ruined and he was forced to go back to his dorms to shower and change. Satoru had apologised profusely, but Kento stormed away leaving his ruined things behind.
Satoru was embarrassed to say he had headed into the city early today to stop by a few bookshops looking for the book that Kento had been reading. He wanted to make sure he replaced it as his own attempt at a sincere apology, he hoped that was the right thing to do. Suguru would help him figure it out. His best friend was definitely better suited to this kind of stuff.
“What are you doing here?”
Satoru’s blood ran cold at the familiar voice, he turned his head to see the person who occupied his thoughts almost constantly. Kento was stood staring at him, his phone in hand against his ear.
“Huh? I’m meeting Suguru, what are you doing here?”
“Meeting Yu.” Kento turned his attention back to the phone to his ear. “Yu, call me back. You’re in trouble.”
Kento hung up his phone before sliding it into his pocket and staring at the white-haired teen in front of him. It took Satoru a minute to realise what was happening, had Suguru mislead him? Tricked him into spending quality time with the guy he spent way too long staring at behind his shades by his own best friend. Satoru cursed internally, swearing revenge on Suguru and Yu in some manner.
“I think we’ve been stood up,” Satoru stated, gesturing with his thumb to the crepe shop. “Want to grab a seat anyway?”
“Fine.” Such a simple reply sent waves of relief and euphoria through Satoru, who had been utterly convinced that Suguru was either the best friend and wingman in existence or the worst.
They found a booth inside and slid onto opposite sides of the table. Satoru quickly grabbed a menu and placed the bag he had been carrying on the seat next to him. He slid a menu in front of Kento who stared at the door anxiously, probably hoping Yu would sweep in and save him.
Satoru doubted that would happen.
“Hey, I got something for you. As an apology.”
Satoru put the bag on the table beside Kento, anxious for the other teen to look inside and hoping that it would wipe the sour look off of his face. Satoru watched Kento over the edge of his glasses as the teen unpacked the bag of books carefully.
“I’m sorry I ruined your book. I didn’t mean to drop all that food on you, it was an accident and I’m really sorry. I noticed that the book is the second in the series, so I bought you the rest in case you didn’t have them. If you do the receipt is there and you can take them back for store credit or something and get something else.”
“Thank you, Gojo. This was very kind of you, I accept your apology.”
The soft smile on Kento’s face was the most beautiful thing Satoru had ever seen. The teen carefully looked over all the books in the bag, turning the covers over to admire them. Satoru shouldn’t be so attracted to the way a person looks at books but here he was, falling deeper and deeper in love the more he learnt about the blonde.
When Kento caught him staring he quickly shot his gaze back down to the menu and scoured the crepe options. He had been here plenty of times, he knew what he was going to get his usual favourite crepe. Satoru watched as Kento stared at the menu, his gaze constantly drifting back to the bag of books. Satoru’s heart couldn’t take how cute the blonde was acting over such a simple gesture. Maybe Suguru was right all along, if he was thoughtful maybe Kento wouldn’t run away screaming.
After they ate their crepes and made small talk, Satoru decided to ask if Kento wanted to take a walk through one of the local parks together. Surprisingly the blonde agreed and off they went, as soon as they arrived at the park Satoru became giddy at the sight of the Sunflowers that were in full bloom near the entrance. He grabbed Kento’s wrist and dragged him over to them.
“What are you doing?”
“I want to see the sunflowers, they’re my favourite.”
“... Why?”
“They remind me of you, Kento. Also… I have six sunflowers as my fate mark, but even if yours is different I’d take you over my fate a thousand times. But deep down, I know it's you. No matter what any mark says if it's right or wrong. I know you're my soulmate” Satoru was feeling extremely bold, the sight of the beautiful flowers pushing him to actually make the confession he’d held in for what felt like so long.
Kento blushed a deep red and clutched the fabric of his trousers over his fate mark. The fate mark that Satoru had just described. His chest tightened, unable to understand if fate was being kind or cruel to him. Kento looked up to see Satoru staring down at him, a nervous smile on his features. Kento sucked in a breath before deciding that if he looked foolish for doing this he would never forgive Gojo Satoru.
Kento stepped closer to Satoru and pressed his lips against the taller teens in a soft kiss.
“Thank you for giving me a reason to love our sunflowers, Satoru.”
“Our? Wait.” Satoru questioned after spending a moment shocked by the chaste kiss.
“Six sunflowers on the left thigh.”
The grin that spread across Satoru’s confused face cause a small chuckle to escape Kento. Satoru whooped and cheered, before pulling Kento into a tight embrace initiating their second kiss. While they were basking in the warmth of each other’s arms, Kento’s attention was drawn by a pair standing not too far away watching them in silent celebration. Kento blushed and hid his face in Satoru’s shoulder.
“Suguru and Yu have been watching us,” Kento murmured into Satoru’s shoulder.
“Oh, well I suppose we better give them something to watch.”
Satoru pushed Kento backwards against a nearby tree and slid his hand up the other boy’s shirt, going in for another kiss as he explored Kento’s soft skin. But this time he deepened the kiss, sliding his tongue inside Kento’s mouth causing the blonde to make a soft gasp. Satoru had never realised how badly he had always wanted this before this moment, having Kento against him, kissing him back and clutching onto him. This moment was perfect.
His soulmate was perfect.
“I didn’t know you were into exhibitionism, Satoru!” Suguru called, trying to break the pair away from each other by calling out.
“Oh it’s not me, quiet Kento here has quite the adventurous side!”
“Kento!” Yu cried, shocked at the older teen’s words.
“I-I do not!” The blonde protested, trying to push Satoru’s hand down and out of his shirt.
Satoru snickered and pressed a kiss to Kento’s forehead, already addicted to being close to the boy. His skin felt so good against his own and he could spend eternity kissing that mouth, but he had forever to spend with Kento. They could stop for now, because they had their whole life together ahead of them and Satoru knew he was going to protect his soulmate with his life.
