“Okay, she’s stable for now. Take her down to ambo and I’ll be right there.”
Gallo, Stella, Mouch, and Violet all nodded, carrying the stretcher with their OD victim on it out of the upstairs bedroom; Sylvie started gathering her supplies and putting them in her bag as Matt stood by.
“This place is weird.” Matt remarked. “Steel screen, steel security door, with what, five locks? Security windows?”
“It is a little extreme. I hadn’t expected we’d need a manpower assist for an OD.” Sylvie shrugged. “But if she lived here alone in this neighborhood, I kind of get it. It’s not exactly the nicest neighborhood.”
“Yeah, I-“ Matt trailed off as they heard a thud from inside the closet.
She motioned towards the handle. “Should I…?”
He shook his head, pointing towards the door. “Go.”
“What? What if it’s a kid or something?”
“I’ll -” Before he could finish his reply, the closet door flew open, and a man stepped out, a gun in his hand; it took one look to know he was on something. “We’re from the Chicago Fire department. Put the gun down.”
Sylvie had worked in Chicago long enough, and dealt with enough shady people through her job, to recognize the gang tattoo on the man’s hand, the hand pointing a gun at her boyfriend’s chest.
“Brett, go.”
She knew from his tone, and the fact he called her Brett, not Sylvie, that he was serious, yet the idea of her leaving him was ridiculous.
Leaving the man she loves in a room with a man pointing a gun at him? Yeah, right.
“Brett.” He repeated, his tone harder than before. “Leave. This is a direct order from your Captain.”
“Not happening, Captain.” Sylvie hadn’t taken her eyes off the gun, yet she knew he was glaring at her. “Sir, we’re with the fire department. We’re not cops. We don’t care what’s happened in this house.”
“Just lower the gun and we’ll walk out of here.”
Sylvie was closer to the man, even if she was facing his side, almost within arm’s length, close enough to see his grip on the gun tightening as his finger hovered near the trigger.
She took her eyes off the gun to look towards Matt, who nodded towards the door again; she shook her head again.
Sylvie’s radio crackled to life, and she saw his finger move again.
She acted on instinct; she rushed forward, shoving the man with all her force just as the gun fired.
The man hit the ground, his head hitting the floor, the gun flying out of his hand.
Her ears rang and her heart pounded as she took a deep breath and spun around to face Matt, exhaling the breath when her eyes landed on him, standing there, watching her with wide eyes.
“Are you okay?”
“Y- yeah, the bullet hit the wall.” Matt closed the distance between them, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her against him. “You… you saved me.”
The sound of footsteps running up the stairs alerted them to the fact their friends would burst through the doorway any second, but neither of them moved.
“What happened?” Stella asked.
“He was hiding in the closet with a gun.” Sylvie replied. “He’s gonna need an ambulance, he hit his head on the ground.”
“O- okay.” Stella called for another ambulance and police back up. “Are you two okay?”
“Yeah.” Matt nodded. “We’re good.”
By the time Sylvie and Violet had gotten back from dropping their OD victim off at Med, Matt was leaning against the desk at the tower, waiting for them.
“Upton and Halstead are in Boden’s office, waiting to talk to us.”
Sylvie nodded. “Okay.”
She followed behind Matt to the Chief’s office; Boden immediately eyed her, worry written all over his face.
“Chief.” She nodded as she sat down on the couch. “Upton, Halstead.”
“Hey.” Hailey replied. “Sounds like you guys had a scary one today.”
“I mean, I think we’ve both had worse.” Sylvie replied. “Have you guys found anything out?”
“Yeah, it turns out the house belonged to the shooter, Devon Laurent. The OD victim appears to be his girlfriend.” Jay stated. “Uniforms searched the house, found drugs, guns, cash. Looks like he’s a dealer.”
“He’ll be going away for a while with the weight we found.”
“Okay.” Sylvie nodded. “I heard at the hospital he has a minor concussion but he’ll be fine.”
“You guys handled yourself well.” Jay remarked.
“That was all Brett.”
“Well, you did good, Brett.” Hailey smiled. “We won’t keep you. I’m sure it’s been a stressful day. We just wanted to let you know he’s in cuffs at Med and he’ll be transferred to jail as soon as he’s medically cleared.”
Matt shook both of their hands. “Thanks for letting us know.”
As the detectives left, Sylvie moved to stand up.
“Actually, Brett, if you wouldn’t mind, I’d like a minute alone to talk to you.”
“Oh, of course, Chief.” She sat back down on the couch, glancing over towards Matt.
“I’ll be in my office.” Matt closed Boden’s door behind him, and Sylvie focused her attention on the Chief.
“I just wanted to check in with you, make sure you’re okay.”
“I’m fine, Chief. I promise.” Sylvie smiled. “It was scary, but I’m fine.”
“Well, if you decide you’re not fine, my door’s always open, and you know the department has resources available.”
“Thank you, Chief. I’m fine, but I appreciate it.”
Boden nodded. “I took 61 and 81 out of service until after lunch. Give you all some time to decompress.”
“I’ll be good to go when you put us back in service.”
As soon as Sylvie walked out of Boden’s office, she headed straight for Matt’s, not bothering to knock on the door before she slipped inside, closing the door behind her; Matt was lying on his bunk, one of his arms over his eyes.
“Hey.” Sylvie sat down on the edge of the bunk, grabbing his hand to pull his arm off his face. “What’s going on in that head of yours?”
“I don’t know if I want to yell at you or kiss you.”
She smirked, biting her lower lip. “Well, I’m sure you know which I prefer.”
“Don’t give me that look.” He laughed. “That’s not fair. I’m trying to be mad that you ignored direct orders and damn near gave me a heart attack today.”
“You had to know leaving you there was never an option.” Sylvie laced her fingers through his. “Would you have left if the roles had been reversed?”
His response was instantaneous. “No.”
“It was a scary situation, but we handled it and we’re both fine.”
“ You handled it, Sylvie.” Matt smiled. “Even if it terrified me, you handled it like the badass you are. That bullet would’ve hit me if you hadn’t done that.”
“I don’t want to think about that.” Sylvie shook her head. “Since we both know you aren’t going to yell at me, how about you go ahead and kiss me already, Captain?”
Matt grinned, pulling on her hand and pulling her on top of him on the bunk. “You don’t have ask me twice.”
