Summary
A one shot collection that is a continuation of the good/right/real universe. Now featuring a one shot set after 5x22:
They’ve gone several days without telling anyone about their engagement. Keeping it a secret feels wrong but also like the correct decision. Temporarily anyway.
At first, she lets making sure Matt is okay take precedence. They agreed they would celebrate once he was discharged from the hospital, which was yesterday, but even after that being there for Mouch and Trudy feels bigger and more urgent. As soon as they’re able to, they intend to join the rotation of people who will sit in the cardiac ICU with Mouch and Trudy. They make a decision to put off any announcements to 51 until they know Mouch is going to pull through.

Summary
The rental car pulls up to a stop against the curb at Firehouse 51. It’s second shift’s day and they haven’t called first. Mostly because they can’t stay long. They only have time for a quick visit before they need to be back in the car and on their way to Fowlerton. They arrived in Chicago last night and spent the evening at Christie’s, catching up with Matt’s sister and niece.
“So,” Matt begins as he turns off the car. “How’s it feel being back for the first time?”
“Strange. Almost like I’m outside of time and space a little bit,” she replies, gnawing on her bottom lip between sentences. “This is dumb, and I know we’ve been gone eight months but coming back for a visit makes the move feel so final. Is that crazy?”
“No, and it’s not dumb either,” he assures her, lifting the backs of her fingers to his lips. “Trust me. If anyone understands that feeling it’s me.” He glances in the rear view mirror, clearly checking on Julia, who’s sound asleep in her car seat, and then turns to face her. “The people in this house are our family and always will be. No matter where we live or what we do. Coming back to find things different is always going to make the decision to leave Chicago feel…bittersweet.”

Summary
From the second she accepted the position with Portland Fire and Rescue, she and Matt agreed they would work the same shift but not at the same house. Minimizing the odds of a situation like Arnow, where they were both at risk on the same call, became priority number one. Julia needed them. That was more important than working side by side every day.
In fact, their firehouses weren’t even in the same district. That was intentional. Different districts typically meant they didn’t overlap. In her six months on the job there had only been one exception and that was because of an extraordinarily large fire in between their neighboring districts.
Did she miss seeing Matt in action? Of course she did, but she’d give up seeing him in action as a fire captain for seeing him in action as a dad any day. He was born to do both but only a handful of people got the opportunity to see how wonderful of a father Matt had become up close and personal. She was lucky to be the person seated in the middle of the very first row.
However, when the opportunity came up to cover a shift at his station, she won’t lie and say she didn’t jump at the opportunity.

Summary
She didn’t remember a lot of what she did after getting home from her shift. The last clear memory was her meeting with her chief. Now that she had officially hit the end of her first 6 months with Portland Fire and Rescue, she could be considering for internal job postings. Chief Grier wanted to make sure that Sylvie not only knew that, but registered for the next ambulance commander exam. There was an opening in the Non-Emergent Medicine Unit but they wanted someone who could, at the very least, grow into a promotion. She wanted to talk to Matt about it first so she’d asked how long she could have to make a decision.
“I can give you till the end of next shift. Is that enough time?”
“Plenty,” she replied.
And it should have been.

Summary
Valentina’s eyes glitter with satisfaction, an almost predatory gleam. “You’re a lone wolf with a thousand-yard stare and a body count that rivals a small army. It’s not charming, James—it’s terrifying. The public wants heroes they can relate to, someone they can feel safe around. We need a softer angle. Someone to hold your hand. Someone the public can root for, someone who humanizes you.” Val’s gaze, which had been fixed on Bucky with surgical precision, softens ever so slightly, morphing into something resembling… consideration.
It’s a dangerous shift. Mel feels a prickle of unease at the back of her neck. Val’s 'solutions' are rarely simple, and never without a hidden cost. When she finally says, “Someone to hold your hand,” the words hang in the air like a poisoned dart, and Mel knows, with sickening certainty, exactly where that dart is aimed.
Mel feels the shift before she sees it. The silence stretches, elongating into something suffocating. The precise, quiet click of Valentina’s pen as she caps it punctuated the room like a countdown, each second ticking away toward an unknown detonation.
Then Val turns her head—slow, deliberate, a predator making its choice—and looks directly at her.

Summary
Violet Mikami doesn't normally let her guard down, except she’s one beer deep, just buzzed enough to take the edge off after a long shift, and Sam Carver is looking at her from across Molly’s like he wants to take her apart.
And she lets him. Look, that is. And she looks back.

Summary
Their timing was never right.
Except for one night. Their timing could not have been more insane.
The universe heard her desire to keep Matt Casey in her life and it made sure that he had that permanent spot... as the father of her children.
Everyone had questioned even more after that why they never gave things a go. It seemed like the universe was shining a big neon light saying - THIS IS YOUR PERSON – but it never quite worked out like that.
