    Summary

A one shot collection that is a continuation of the good/right/real universe. Now featuring a one shot set after 5x22:

They’ve gone several days without telling anyone about their engagement. Keeping it a secret feels wrong but also like the correct decision. Temporarily anyway.

At first, she lets making sure Matt is okay take precedence. They agreed they would celebrate once he was discharged from the hospital, which was yesterday, but even after that being there for Mouch and Trudy feels bigger and more urgent. As soon as they’re able to, they intend to join the rotation of people who will sit in the cardiac ICU with Mouch and Trudy. They make a decision to put off any announcements to 51 until they know Mouch is going to pull through.

    Summary

The rental car pulls up to a stop against the curb at Firehouse 51. It’s second shift’s day and they haven’t called first. Mostly because they can’t stay long. They only have time for a quick visit before they need to be back in the car and on their way to Fowlerton. They arrived in Chicago last night and spent the evening at Christie’s, catching up with Matt’s sister and niece.

“So,” Matt begins as he turns off the car. “How’s it feel being back for the first time?”

“Strange. Almost like I’m outside of time and space a little bit,” she replies, gnawing on her bottom lip between sentences. “This is dumb, and I know we’ve been gone eight months but coming back for a visit makes the move feel so final. Is that crazy?”

“No, and it’s not dumb either,” he assures her, lifting the backs of her fingers to his lips. “Trust me. If anyone understands that feeling it’s me.” He glances in the rear view mirror, clearly checking on Julia, who’s sound asleep in her car seat, and then turns to face her. “The people in this house are our family and always will be. No matter where we live or what we do. Coming back to find things different is always going to make the decision to leave Chicago feel…bittersweet.”

    Summary

From the second she accepted the position with Portland Fire and Rescue, she and Matt agreed they would work the same shift but not at the same house. Minimizing the odds of a situation like Arnow, where they were both at risk on the same call, became priority number one. Julia needed them. That was more important than working side by side every day.

In fact, their firehouses weren’t even in the same district. That was intentional. Different districts typically meant they didn’t overlap. In her six months on the job there had only been one exception and that was because of an extraordinarily large fire in between their neighboring districts.

Did she miss seeing Matt in action? Of course she did, but she’d give up seeing him in action as a fire captain for seeing him in action as a dad any day. He was born to do both but only a handful of people got the opportunity to see how wonderful of a father Matt had become up close and personal. She was lucky to be the person seated in the middle of the very first row.

However, when the opportunity came up to cover a shift at his station, she won’t lie and say she didn’t jump at the opportunity.

    Summary

She didn’t remember a lot of what she did after getting home from her shift. The last clear memory was her meeting with her chief. Now that she had officially hit the end of her first 6 months with Portland Fire and Rescue, she could be considering for internal job postings. Chief Grier wanted to make sure that Sylvie not only knew that, but registered for the next ambulance commander exam. There was an opening in the Non-Emergent Medicine Unit but they wanted someone who could, at the very least, grow into a promotion. She wanted to talk to Matt about it first so she’d asked how long she could have to make a decision.

“I can give you till the end of next shift. Is that enough time?”

    “Plenty,” she replied.

    And it should have been.

    Summary

It’s 10 in the morning on a Sunday and somehow Sylvie is still in bed. She wakes up disoriented by how brightly the midmorning sun lights up the bedroom. The daylight is merely slipping through the cracks in the blinds and still no additional lighting is needed. She never sleeps this late. Not since a certain little girl came into her life.

As her eyes blink open she tries to tune her ears to the baby monitor and, simultaneously, the hallway beyond their closed bedroom door. Both are eerily quiet.

    Summary

A blush colors Sylvie’s cheeks as she rests her chin on his shoulder and beams up at him. “Too late to back out now anyway. You’re stuck with me.”

“Good,” Matt declares, turning to face her. He pecks a quick and casual kiss to her lips while a low chuckle escapes him. “And I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with you.”

“This is sweet and all and I get the symbolism,” Stella says, smiling warmly at her friends. Matt swears he sees pride and relief in her eyes too and he wonders how hard it was for Kidd to stay out of their relationship even when things looked their darkest. She and Severide don’t like to meddle but he can’t help but wonder about her point of view. “But are you really going to deny your friends and family, and most importantly me, the chance to see Casey’s face when you step into the venue in your wedding dress?”

“Oh come on,” Sylvie says, waving a hand dismissively. “Is that really that big of a deal?”

Stella freezes while consolidating the breakfast dishes and then stares at Sylvie as if she’s lost her mind. “You can’t be serious. Tell me you’re joking.”

Sylvie looks truly clueless. Matt is too, to be honest. “What?”

    Summary

One month after he decided to impulsively propose to Sylvie Brett in the doorway of her apartment, he finds himself waiting for her at the airport baggage claim. Back then he went home the next day, just long enough to arrange for a week of furlough, and then flew straight back. She needed help adjusting to life with Julia whether she admitted it or not so he made sure to show up.

It was an intense week. Adjusting to being back together and co-parents while also figuring out the plan for long distance going forward -- it was a lot.

The first plan they made centered around Ben’s graduation. Upon learning the news of their engagement, Ben’s first request was to make sure Sylvie would be attending. The boys missed Sylvie as much as him.

    Now, Graduation weekend is here.

    Summary

To say Sylvie is surprised by today’s turn of events would be an overstatement. Did she hope she left these sort of occurrences behind in Chicago? Yes. Did she think she really did? No.

So, no, she isn’t surprised when she looks up and sees a car heading straight toward the ambo just a few hours into her fourth ever shift with Portland FD.

They just parked at a vehicle accident. Her partner had already stepped out of the driver’s side, but just as Sylvie reaches for her door handle a car comes speeding out of opposing traffic and rams the ambo head on. Sending the ambulance backwards into the existing vehicle accident.

Matt swipes down and taps his private text chain with Sylvie.

    MC: How’s shift?

The dots at the bottom undulate for a few seconds before they stop completely. He wonders if the bells at 51 went off, but then a picture of them from Severide’s wedding fills his screen along with her name, the green answer button pulsing periodically.

He taps and then presses the phone to his ear. “Hey, babe.”

“Hey,” she greets, sounding tired but cheerful. “Shift is good. So far anyway. A lot better than last shift when I had to leave Julia with Capp and Tony.”

He snorts through a laugh. “At least Herrmann was there. Super Dad would never let you down.”

    Summary

It took a week for her to feel it.

Those first 7 days were a whirlwind. She ran on giddy excitement and lots of caffeine. Since the last time she’d stayed at the house, Matt converted the basement into a tiny studio apartment for Griffin, and set up a nursery for Julia in his newly vacant room.

She moved in the crib, the changing table, and the antique rocker her mother had given her while Matt refitted the closet with racks and shelves meant to accommodate children’s clothing. And then they had to fill out the rest of the room with furniture and decor. Coming from her one bedroom apartment in Chicago, Sylvie hadn’t had the space for much more than the essentials. Setting up the nursery alone took at least two days. It was the perfect project.

There was so much else to do to get settled in. Her list of tasks grew by the hour. Or so it seemed. Everything from finding time to go to the bank and have her added to Matt’s accounts to visiting the dreaded DMV and trying to get her car tags and license switched over from Illinois to Oregon. None of it was glamorous but all of it was necessary.

    “Marry me?”

Is this really happening? Is she dreaming about him again? It’s happened more often than she’d like to admit. But then she remembers she’s in overalls and socks with her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail because she couldn’t be bothered to wash it that morning.

If it were a dream, she’d look cuter than this.

    Summary

“What is all this?” Matt asks as he steps into the bunkroom and finds Stella and his paramedics spread out across the room, hockey sticks in hand.

“Oh, uh, nothing, Captain. Just screwing around,” Stella says, shrugging with an overly innocent grin.

“That hockey team we saved last year, sent us some thank you gifts,” Sylvie explains.

“Yeah, we absolutely were not fake sword fighting with hockey sticks,” Stella states, nodding slowly while avoiding Casey’s eyes.

He chooses to ignore her. As long as they didn’t break anything, what does he care?

“They also sent us passes to the National High School Hockey championships tournament out in Woodridge,” Foster adds, holding up 6 lanyards with laminated passes at the end of them. “VIP, baby!”

Sylvie laughs and shakes her head at her partner. The sound of her laugh and the smile on her face captivate him more than they should. He can’t help it though. He’s become somewhat obsessed with Brett and her happiness.

“We invited Severide and Cruz. You should come too.” Her cheeks flush slightly and her smile turns pleading. “It’ll be fun."

    Summary

They get back late from dropping Griffin off at the airport. Ben’s all settled on campus and the nursery is finished. Matt knows Sylvie’s a moment away from launching into a very long pre-shift to do list so once they’re inside he keeps a hold of her hand and tugs her over to the couch.

“Matt, I need to pack my duffle—“

“It can wait a few minutes.” He sits down and pulls her with him. “Relax with me for a bit. We’ve been running around all day.”

When he tucks her under his arm, she doesn’t argue. Just nods and yawns, laying her head on his shoulder.

“So,” she asks, snuggling in deeper. “Do you think we should set a date for the wedding? I know we haven’t had a lot of time to think about it yet and maybe we need to let things calm down first, but I realized we’ve never even discussed a general timeline.”

“We haven’t discussed wedding plans at all,” he reminds her. “Not even to discuss best man and maid of honor.”

Sylvie chuckles. “That’s cause we already know who we’re choosing. Obviously, it’s Severide and Stella.”

“Obviously,” Matt agrees, grinning as he kisses her.

Her last two days off were spent house hunting.

Amidst all the houses they viewed, they found one they both agreed was perfect. It had 5 bedrooms and three and a half baths. It was close to Matt’s new house and yet still not an unreasonable commute to 51. On days when Matt would have meetings at the Academy or HQ, those buildings were close as well. To top it all off, the school district it was in was one of the best in the county. Not an immediate concern for Julia, but certainly something they needed to think about.

    Summary

After brunch with Christie and Violet, that went exceptionally well in Sylvie’s opinion, they all pile back in the car and she plugs in Patty and Maurice’s address to Matt’s phone's GPS. It’s long past time that Matt and the boys meet Julia and today is finally the day.

She called yesterday and confirmed a visit. Patty said to stop by anytime since they would be home all day. Sylvie cannot wait to hold her little squish of a baby girl. It’s been too long since a visit, even if she just saw her a day before Matt arrived home.

The second they pull into the driveway, Sylvie senses Matt’s nerves. He’s squirmy and his hands never quite settle anywhere for longer than a second or two. She glances toward the backseat and notices the boys are more antsy than nervous. Griffin’s leg is bouncing up and down, knocking into the back of her seat.

Reaching across the arm rests, Sylvie rubs Matt’s shoulder soothingly. “You’ll be great. Julia will love you.”

Severide winces and then mutters an apology to her, pointing at the ESPN broadcast with his beer bottle. "You might wanna see this."

She turns on her stool to see Matt's solemn face. It's a picture of him on game day, headed into the arena before changing into his uniform. He looks dressed to impress in an expensive suit, with his hair combed back. When she knew him he kept his hair short, but she has to admit his longer hair looks fluffy and soft and suits him. Her fingers flex and then tighten as she shoves down the urge to touch it.

God, she misses him. An unbearable amount.

After taking in his photo, she reads the headline on the screen.

A magazine is thrown down on the bar top next to Matt. He skims it just enough to read the cover. It's a tabloid. One of those that claims to have inside sources but never does.

CASEY TO RETIRE AT END OF CURRENT SEASON.

"Looks like you're out, old man."

He rolls his eyes and slides the magazine away, a dry grin on his face as he stares down at his whiskey. "We're the exact same age. If I'm retiring, so are you, Severide."

"Yeah, but I'm not the face of the franchise," Kelly says, grabbing Matt's chin and squishing his cheeks. "I mean look at this face. They're all obsessed with it."

Matt shoves his best friend and teammate away. "Get away from me."

    Summary

Matt’s never seen the back of this ambo before.

He’s been parked on the back bumper of 61 many times. For a forced rest or to let Mikami or Shay tend to him. But he’s never spared 36 more than a passing glance.

    Until today.

Upon stepping out of that apartment building fire, he was struggling to breathe. It didn’t take long for the PIC on 36, the nearest ambulance to his location, to spot him. He tried his best to put her off and go back inside, but she essentially blackmailed him with a write up if he didn’t take a break.

So now he’s sitting on the back bumper of an ambulance he’s never seen before — not even in passing on a huge multi-rig call — willing himself to breathe. He’s still struggling to inhale and exhale without coughing, but he’ll begrudgingly admit that taking off his oxygen tank and SCBA was the right movie. It’s helped immensely.

The PIC hands him a water bottle, tossing her blonde french braided hair to one shoulder as she does. “Better?” Her expression is more patient than he deserves at the moment.
