After a week or two they started dating, Makishima and Toudou began to be more open about their relationship. Makishima, although he was anxious, muttered the news to his team during a practice.
“Makishima-Senpai, that is great!” Onoda said, his eyes welling with tears due to the good news.
“It’s nothing to cry over, sho,” he replied, gently placing a hand on the first year’s back. Announcing the news meant he couldn’t help but smile a little. While the rest of the team congratulated the climber, Tadokoro let out a loud laugh and made a gesture towards Kinjou.
“Hah, now you owe me 2000 yen as I told you he would start dating the headband guy from Hakone this year,” he said. Kinjou replied with a small nod as he accepted defeat in the bet he had made. Of course that is the sort of thing Makishima’s fellow third years would do.
Similarly, Toudou also told his team the same day. However, unlike his boyfriend, he decided to call the whole team to his attention so he could announce the news proudly. The team all clapped after he made the announcement that he was ‘the proud boyfriend of Maki-chan’. While he mostly received compliments, which he responded to with a smile and a ‘thank you’, Arakita typically killed the mood with his opinion on the news.
“Well it’s about time you got off with that weird Christmas Tree guy from Sohoku, you two were already practically banging,” he commented in his usual tone. Placing a hand on his chest dramatically, the climber took some offence.
“Could you at least pretend to be proud?” the climber responded. Arakita folded his arms,
“Nah, because I saw it coming miles away,” he added, before going to find Shinkai, who had made his way outside. Watching his permanently irritated teammate leave, Toudou took the time to smile at himself, proud of his announcement. He was glad that he and his boyfriend had finally told everyone the news and become more open about their blossoming relationship. Friends and family knew. However, there was one group he hadn’t told yet: his fans.
Toudou had been hesitant about telling his fans. Being so flirty and friendly with his fans, who he often spoke with, meant that he had no idea how they would react to their idol being ‘off the market’. Toudou was also well aware of the dangers around the sort of fans that genuinely loved him and would hate the fact he was in a relationship, as the last thing he wanted was for Maki-chan to get death threats from an over-obsessed fan for ‘stealing their Toudou’. However, Toudou was also pretty certain most his fans were sane and would be fine with it, and he knew he would eventually have to spill the beans, as he discovered one Saturday afternoon when he was having a casual conversation with some fans he had met up with.
“It is so nice that you speak to us, Toudou!” one female fan exclaimed, as Toudou walked through a park with a number of fans. Toudou gave the girl a beaming smile.
“I think it is important that I am nice to my fans, and I like hanging out with my fans and friends,” the girl then played with the ‘Toudou’ fan she was holding in her hands for a moment before speaking again.
“Yes, like last Saturday I think I saw you with a friend, I couldn’t see properly as I was on the other side of the street, they were wearing a funky tie-dye t-shirt and had long hair” she said, this comment made Toudou panic for a moment, she had saw him when he was on a date with Makishima, feeling his hands grow sweaty he muttered under his breath.
“Maki…” upon saying this, another fangirl then piped up.
“Is Maki another one of your fans?” she asked, the small girl then lowered her voice “or is Maki your girlfriend?” the first fan then spoke again.
“I couldn’t see properly, but I think he was a guy,” she added, Toudou nodded.
“Maki-chan is indeed a guy, we are friends and rivals, nothing else,” he lied, hoping his fans would drop the subject. The first fan then smirked and folded her arms, ‘she saw something, didn’t she?’ He thought as he saw her expression change.
“Well that is funny you say that as I’m pretty sure you were holding hands, and that I’m certain I saw you reach in to kiss each other,” this comment made Toudou’s lightly tanned cheeks turn a bright pink.
“Toudou has a boyfriend!” the smaller fan exclaimed, the other fans present all ‘awwed’ upon this announcement. He couldn’t lie anymore so Toudou gave a beaming smile and decided to fess up.
“Yes, Maki-chan is my boyfriend,” he announced, his fans reaching to hug Toudou as a way to congratulate the dark-haired cyclist. Another fangirl spoke.
“Can we meet him?” she asked. Toudou thought over this question, he had no idea how Makishima would react to him being organised into a social meeting, knowing how much his boyfriend hated that sort of thing, plus he had no idea how his fans would react to Makishima, maybe they would find him weird. However, the exciting smiles of his fans were something he couldn’t say no to.
“That sounds great,” he said, no hoping that he would be able to rope Maki-chan into the meeting. The girl smiled, a smile which made Toudou panic over his decision.
That evening Toudou spent the evenings around Makishima’s, the couple lounged on Makishima’s bed, Toudou snuggled up to his boyfriend as he flicked through the TV channels.
“Jinpachi, there is nothing on at all,” Makishima noted, putting the remote to one side. He took a moment to relax and gently ran a finger through his boyfriend’s glossy hair and then down his back. The gentle tickle caused Toudou to shiver a little.
“Are you doing anything tomorrow, Maki-chan?” Toudou asked, gently slipping a hand up his boyfriend’s brightly coloured shirt, his hand resting gently on the surprisingly well-toned chest of Makishima.
“No, nothing special,” Makishima replied letting his boyfriend touch his chest. Toudou gave a small nod and took a breath in before he prepared to tell his boyfriend of what happened earlier.
“Well, I told some of my fans we are dating and now they all want to meet you. They said to go to the café we sometimes cycle by at 11 tomorrow, I will be there too, so don’t worry,” he informed, Makishima jerked away for a moment.
“You know how terrible I am at being nice to people, they won’t like me, I will probably scare them or something, sho,” he replied, panicking at the arrangement. Toudou reached to gently play with some of his boyfriend’s wavy green and red hair, in hope it would soothe him.
“That isn’t true, just be yourself Maki-chan, that is what you always tell other people,” Toudou commented, speaking in a calm smooth voice. Makishima went silent for a moment before speaking again.
“Even you say my smile is terrifying sho, plus what if they start judging you for being a ‘perfect ten’ yet dating someone who is probably a five on a good day,” Makishima added, his tone still agitated, he knew how concerned Toudou was about appearances and reputation. Toudou let go of the hair he was playing with, letting it fall back into place at his lower back.
“That is not true, Maki-chan, you are beautiful without having to smile,” he said, adjusting his headband, “you are an eleven as you are my beautiful, perfect boyfriend who is of the scale,” he added, as an attempt of flattery. However, Makishima didn’t accept it.
“Sho, I know that was completely sarcastic, Jinpachi,” he muttered. Toudou took a moment too look over his boyfriend before speaking again.
“Ok, you are probably just about a nine, as while a beaming smile would help push you up to a ten, you are very attractive, your facial features and look are quite unique, yet handsome at the same time. I love you for it,” Toudou said, this time being completely sincere and honest. While Makishima wanted to dispute it, he could tell Toudou meant what he said, causing his cheeks to turn as red as the streaks in his hair.
“That… is so nice of you, Jinpachi,” he muttered, before reaching to give his boyfriend a kiss on the cheek.
“It’s the truth, Maki-chan,” he replied, “so, will you go to meet my fans?” he asked. Makishima let out a deep sigh.
“I guess it won’t be so bad since you will be there at least, so I will,” he decided, the decision put a smile on Toudou’s face.
“Thank you, Maki-chan!” he exclaimed, proceeding to plant a kiss on his boyfriend’s lips.
Toudou looked down at his watch. Five minutes to eleven. Makishima hadn’t arrived yet, he still had another five minutes, yet both he and his fans were already sat around the table and drinking coffee.
“I can’t wait to meet him,” one fan said, stirring the coffee she had ordered.
“He should be here soon,” Toudou said, reassuring himself. Maybe he should send a text to remind him, but he was probably cycling on his way. Toudou took a sip from the drink he had ordered, it was now eleven on the dot. Any minute now he told himself. Another minute or so passed before Gina, the girl who had seen Makishima with him before, pointed to the window.
“Is that him there?” she said, Toudou looked over to see that outside the café there was a lanky figure locking up a bike. He smiled as he watched Makishima make his way to the door, and then walk in.
“Maki-chan!” he called, waving his arms to attract his attention. Catching the signal, Makishima made his way over to the table and took a seat next to Toudou, “you look nice today, Maki-chan,” he noted, as despite how reluctant he had been to come along, Makishima did look particularly good. He had a gentle, pleasant scent about him and had straightened his hair, which made him look so good that Toudou was struggling to not start blushing like an idiot. Makishima was also wearing a new black t-shirt with a white spider silhouette on it with a pair of bright blue jeans with cobwebs embroidered around the hem. Before Makishima could introduce himself, one of the fans spoke.
“Fashionably late?” she commented. Makishima gave a confused look.
“No, I just had issues getting here as the usual path I cycle on was blocked for roadworks,” he replied. There was a moment of silence, worried he had made things awkward, Makishima gave a small, weak smile.
“He is so cute!” one fan called, breaking the silence.
“Yes, I know who he is now, he is the Peak Spider, he was in a cycling magazine once,” another added. Toudou put a hand around his boyfriend’s shoulder.
“Careful, he is my boyfriend,” Toudou commented giving Makishima a kiss, causing him to blush.
“How long have you been dating Toudou-san?” Makishima was asked.
“Two weeks,” he replied, scratching his neck.
“We have known each other much longer though, as Maki-chan is my eternal rival!” Toudou announced.
“Don’t call me that…” Makishima muttered in response, as a waiter came over so Makishima could order himself a drink and a cake to share with Toudou.
The girl who was beside Makishima gently tapped his shoulder, causing him to glance over.
“Your hair is very pretty… Maki-chan, can I touch it?” she asked. The girl was small and younger looking than the rest of the fans and wore glasses, causing Makishima to be reminded of Onoda.
“I guess, sho,” he said in response.
“So what is Maki-chan into, other than cycling?” a girl asked from across the table.
“Don’t call me Maki-chan!” Makishima blurted out, feeling embarrassed at the use of the nickname Toudou gave him, “Gravure and fashion mostly,” he said, as a waiter appeared to place the drink and cake on the table. Toudou went to take a mouthful and then spoke.
“Maki-chan has a… unique sense of fashion,” he noted. Unique was one way of putting it, ‘ridiculous’ another, but Toudou loved Makishima all the same.
“Oh fashion? What sort of fashion would you recommend then?” one girl asked in response. Makishima took a moment to finish eating the cake he had in his mouth before giving a response.
“Find your own style, sho,” he stated, giving a small smirk, he then glanced over to the small girl beside him, who by this point had weaved a small braid into his hair, “umm…. Can you stop now, sho?’ he requested, the girl nodded and stopped. Even though the social interaction was tiring for Makishima, he was glad that Toudou’s fans were much nicer than he had expected. The conversation continued as he finished his drink and cake. After finishing, Makishima turned to Toudou.
“Jinpachi, we should leave soon,” he said. Toudou responded with an understanding nod.
“Ok, but before we go, let’s have a picture together Maki-chan!” Toudou suggested, passing his camera to a girl across the table.
“What?” Makishima said, but before he could say anything, he was being pulled into the picture with Toudou, flashing a small smirk. When the girl passed the camera back to Toudou, Makishima watched as Toudou smiled at the result.
“Not bad,” he commented, before giving Makishima a kiss.
“Ok, I need to go, sho,” Makishima said getting up. While doing so the fans all said goodbye.
“Nice to meet you, Makishima!” they called.
“You too…” he muttered in response.
A few days after the meeting, Makishima decided to go for a cycle after school and practice was over for the day. Nothing strenuous, just a ride around the block, since it was pleasant, sunny weather that day. While enjoying his cycle, he saw a group of high school girls together. One was holding something in her hand which threw him off. Double taking, he parked up his bike and made his way over to have a closer look. Approaching the girls, one let out a loud scream, causing Makishima to jump back in shock, had he scared them by sneaking up on them? No, it wasn’t’ that, as the girl who screamed held up the paper fan she was holding. The fan was a light green in colour with ‘Maki-chan’ written across it in blue and featured an image of Makishima himself, tilting his bike and smiling. ‘Where on earth did she get it?’ he thought, looking at the fan.
“Where did you get that?” he asked, curious to why fans featuring his mug were being owned by anyone.
“I got it from a shop Maki-chan!” the girl said, “they are selling them in quite a few places, didn’t you know, you and Toudou-san’s relationship have become the talk of the town!” shaking his head, and slightly bemused, he made his way back to his bike. He should have known that dating Toudou was going to come with some side effects.
