Work Text:
“Didn’t you wish we could be together forever?” Kou's voice was surprisingly light and innocent after jumping off of a tower with the intention of colliding with the ground below.
“Are you insane?! Jumping to your death! Are you really trying to kill yourself? You’re that much of an idiot?!” Mitsuba couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed, there was no way Kou was willing to kill himself for him. So then why did he jump?
“You… You’re the one who said everyone should die!” Kou was now yelling at the pink haired boy, trying to take as little blame in his stupid decision. Why did he think it would work? Of course Mitsuba would save him. But Kou still wanted to try.
“Yes! But not-” Mitsuba tripped over his words, eyes wide before he looked away and mumbled the end of his sentence: “Not you”
Kou wasn’t sure he heard him right, but blood still rushed to his cheeks.
The moment didn’t last long before Mitsuba returned to accusing Kou and talking about his blatant stupidity.
“Like this is my fault! You’re the one who secretly has a death wish!”
“No!” Kou was embarrassed at how quickly and loudly he responded, but tried to make it better by explaining his thought process. “I just thought that if I could be like you, I might be able to understand you better. Maybe you wouldn’t get so mad at me all the time.” Kou let out a soft chuckle as if it could lighten the mood. “Sorry.”
Mitsuba’s eyes went wide, staring at how intently Kou was inspecting the grass, still processing his words. Surely he didn’t mean it that way, but Mitsuba would be lying if he said there wasn’t a soft blush forming on his cheeks as he looked away from Kou.
“You don’t make sense.”
“Yeah. I know.”
It was now Mitsuba’s turn to look at the ground while he once again processed what Kou said.
“I get it now.” Mitsuba fell back onto the bushes “You're such a pain, but I guess I'll have to stop living here.”
“Really?!” Mitsubas heart skipped a beat at the sound of Kou’s lighthearted exclamation. Then Kou leaned in ever so slightly, causing Mitsubas cheeks to darken even more. After seeing the shocked look on his friend's face, Kou backed away and looked up at the stars.
“I really am sorry. I didn’t expect…”
“What? For me to actually catch you?” Mitsuba teased, expecting a laugh, but he was instead met with a solemn nod as Kou’s eyes returned to the ground. Mitsuba sat back up.
“You’re joking right? You didn’t actually mean to…” Mitsuba stopped talking as the look on Kou’s face answered his question. “Kou-“
“You’re the most important person to me. I know that I'm not powerful, or smart, or anything that matters. I don't even know if I'll be able to find a way to turn you into a human. But I know I would be able to become a supernatural. If I could just… then, even if we were both supernaturals, at least we’d be together.” Kou gave Mitsuba a sad smile, and Mitsuba returned it with a terrified look on his face. “I know it’s selfish, I wasn't thinking about how it would affect you. I just wanted to be with you.” Kou looked back down, letting every bad thought in and dropping the fake smile on his face. Before he could react, Mitsuba reached out and pulled Kou into a tight hug. Tears falling down both their faces as they embraced, Mitsuba managed to let out one phrase.
“You idiot.”
