Work Text:

Trying to make humans understand was a sore point for him. No one could understand him, and no one could help him. Yet he needed help, and he needed to make someone understand. So that was his next endeavor – learn how to communicate with the humans.

Detective Pikachu was on the case, and he had been for a while, with various amounts of success. He had succeeded in getting them to go all mushy and end up talking to him like he was a small baby. He has even succeeded in getting some of the humans to follow him, but that was a bit more hit and miss. The best thing he had accomplished so far was to try and play a game of charades like he had with Mr Mime. Even then the humans had looked at him confusedly, some had even pointed and laughed like he was just entertainment to them. Detective Pikachu had later learned that there had been a video posted of himself acting strangely. That curtailed his perceived progress, putting him back to square one on ideas on how to get them understand his plight.

But that was nothing compared to what was about to befall him on his next attempt at getting someone to help him.

There was nothing for him in the city, his plan was not working out, so he had decided to go further afield to gain the help needed. The idea stemmed not from himself, but from a young woman, Lucy, something she had said was niggling at the back of his mind. The Psyduck who had attached themselves to her had also agreed that maybe a change of location would do him some good. Since Detective Pikachu could not shake the idea, so he was now leaving the city, but only to get the idea out of his head so that it stopped bothering him and taking up valuable space where other more useful pertinent information could be kept.

When he got off the train, he was surprised at how quiet it was, and at how there was not much going on, and at how there were not buildings and signs for as far as he could see. In fact, he could see for miles. Despite there being nothing but grass and trees, he really could lose himself out there. It would be a great place for him to come and think during any of his future cases.

That was what he meant to spend a few minutes doing, finding a suitable place to sit in the grass and think about his next steps. Just as he was settling down, he saw Cubone passing by, he did not see many of those in the city. Cubone kept his attention until they were out of sight and that is when he truly settled down to think.

Being deep in thought had its benefits, time passed by quicker, and he could get work done by mentally mapping out all the things he needed to do. Usually there was a lead in the case, resulting in a big break as it were. This time there was no such luck, all he knew was that he had to find someone, though he did not know who, or why. It was just a feeling that Detective Pikachu had.

The only downside to being within his own mind was that he could not tell what was happening just a few feet from him, not until he was already within a pokeball.
He was not having it, he was no ones pokemon, not least for someone he had not had the chance to meet. Detective Pikachu was going to thunderbolt them all the way to Ryme City when he escaped from inside the pokeball. But first he was going to wait until the last possible moment to escape, making his potential trainer think he had been caught. He was going to catch them unawares.

He counted down the seconds and then exploded out of the pokeball in what could only be described as a fit of rage.

“That was not cool. Nope. Not in any way cool,” Detective Pikachu said, orientating himself to face the person who had thrown the ball. The man, little more than a boy was looking at him like someone had stolen one of his berries. “You’re about to be in a world of pain,” Detective Pikachu stated, though he knew that the young man would only be hearing ‘pikachu’ in varying tones, the message would be clear.

Detective Pikachu took a few steps closer, and the young man took a step backward so quickly he fell onto his bottom. This was confusing as this was not the usual reaction to a pikachu.

“I’m sorry,” The young man said from the ground, still looking at him funnily.

“A thundershock. I think that will do,” Detective Pikachu mused. “Maybe I’ll find a squirtle to pour some water on you first,” he continued, doing his utmost to use a threatening tone, that’d teach anyone trying to capture him.

“Wait. Don’t do that. There is no need for you to thundershock me,” the young man said, causing him to pause.

“You can understand me?”

“I can…”

Detective Pikachu knew that this was his chance, so he jumped onto his chance at having help, quite literally, “That is great. There’s something which must be done. Though you must promise to never, and I mean never, try and use a pokeball on me again.”

“Done,” Tim said, and Detective Pikachu jumped off him, allowing him to get up from the ground as he had vacated his lap.

“I wasn’t going to try and catch you. I swear. There was a cubone-”

“You wanted to catch a cubone and not me!” Detective Pikachu said, incredulously, like he was somehow affronted this was the case. He frowned to himself, he had just chastised this man for trying to catch him and was now somehow angry that the man was trying to catch another pokemon. There was no way he wanted to be his pokemon, absolutely no way, they had only just met.

There was something he needed to ask as he couldn’t keep calling him the man, “What’s your name?”

“It’s Tim,” he said shyly, like he couldn’t quite believe that this was happening, before saying the following more confidently, “What is it you need me to do?”

“I need to find Harry Goodman, and you’re going to help me.”
