Work Text:

“God, he’s just so annoying, with that smile, those green eyes. Ugh, could he turn off that charm for one second?”

“Doesn’t sound like annoyance is what you’re feeling,” Jirou said, lying back typing on her phone.

Hitoshi batted away her phone so it landed on her head. “Hey. What are you trying to imply?”

Jirou rubbed her cheek, glaring at Hitoshi with a dagger like stare. “I’m just saying. Go talk to him, you idiot.”

“Why would I do that? I hate him.”

Jirou sighed and picked up her phone. “Of course you do. Of course you do, Shinsou.”

Halfway across the city, Midoriya Izuku was sneezing uncontrollably.

“Aw, your soulmate’s talking about you!” Uraraka giggled, resting her head on her palms. “They must be talking about you a lot, how long has it been now? Like an hour?”

Izuku wiped his runny nose on his sleeve, and desperately tried to focus on his schoolwork. “I really appreciate it, but it would be nice if if they could stop for like, a minute so I can get this done.”

Uraraka tapped his paper. “Give it here, I’ll do it.”

Izuku slid it over, and rested his head on the desk, groaning as another bout of sneezes exploded out of him.

“Thanks, Uraraka,” He moaned.

“No problem! Homework doesn’t matter compared to your soulmate anyway. Oh! I bet it’s that purple haired boy you keep staring at - ”

Izuku’s immediate retort was hidden under a new fit of coughing. Like he could have done much to disprove Uraraka anyway.

“So,” Jirou began conversationally. “You’re going on the same trip as him. Assigned to the same group. Same bus, even. And tell me why you’re not going to sit next to him?”

“Because he hates me,” Hitoshi groaned from his face down position on the bench. The bench was slightly damp from the rain earlier, but that hadn’t stopped him. He felt that the dampness soaking into his shirt matched the melodrama of his life right now.

“I thought you hated him.”

“That too!”

Jirou groaned, and poked Hitoshi in the forehead. Hitoshi looked up to glare at her, and Jirou grabbed his face within her palms. His cheeks squished together under her fingers.

“You are going to sit next to Midoriya, and you are going to tell him that you like him. If you don’t, I am going to go to him and personally tell him about that one embarrassing time in fourth grade. You know what I’m talking about.”

Hitoshi stared up at her in fear. “You wouldn’t,” he mumbled, gargled through his smooshed mouth.

“Oh,” Jirou said, terrifyingly. “I would.”

“But what if he’s not my soulmate - “ Hitoshi was cut off by the rapid shaking of his head in Jirou’s hands.

“You! Complete! Idiot! Do it anyway!”

“Fine! Please stop shaking me!”

Hitoshi slunk onto the bus, hands jammed into his pocket and head lowered. He slumped into the back, staring down at the ground. Midoriya wasn’t here yet, so he wasn’t technically breaking his promise to Jirou. Technically.

“Is it alright if I sit here?” A light voice asked him. A very familiar voice asked him.

Hitoshi jerked his head up and froze, eyes locked with Midoriya. His crush.. His heart pounded wildly in his chest.

“Um,” Shinsou said eloquently. “I - okay.”

“Cool!” Midoriya said, smiling brightly. All coherent thought in Hitoshi’s head made a break for it and jumped out of the window.

Midoriya sat down next to him, and his thigh touched Hitoshi’s leg. He stared straight ahead, desperately trying not to think of the warm skin brushing against him. He could do this. The trip was only an hour. Hitoshi could survive.

A brown haired girl waved to Midoriya from across the bus, skipping her way over. She swung into the seat in front of Midoriya and looked at Hitoshi. Her eyes flicked over to Hitoshi and her eyes widened.

“Oh, hey is that - “

“Shinsou, my friend, yes it is,” Midoriya said quickly, eyes jerking between Hitoshi and the girl.

“Uh. Hi?” Hitoshi said, fingers nervously pulling at his trouser fabric, hidden inside his pockets.

The girl snapped her fingers. “Oooohhh, you’re the guy Deku fought against in the last general knowledge competition, right? You were so close!”

“I wasn’t really…” Hitoshi muttered darkly.

“No, you really were! You were incredible. I loved fighting against you, Shinsou!” Midoriya gushed, eyes sparkling with honest intensity.

Hitoshi was about to say say something back, likely a very shy mumble of thanks, but was interrupted by a cough.

Both Midoriya and the girl stared at him. The girl slowly raised her finger to point at him. “Deku, Deku, he coughed - “

“Uraraka, it doesn’t mean that!” Midoriya said hastily, wringing his hands. “He could just have hayfever, right?”

“I don’t have hayfever,” Hitoshi mumbled, brain still trying to comprehend what exactly was happening.

Hitoshi looked directly at Midoriya as he said “I also enjoyed fighting against you.”

There was a brief second of nothing, a brief second where Hitoshi’s doubts run through his head, where he wasn’t Midoriya’s soulmate and he would never, ever have a chance -

And then Midoriya coughed.

Uraraka’s hands flew up in there air. “I knew it! You so owe me!”

“You… you’re my soulmate,” Hitoshi breathed out hazily.

“Do you wanna go on a date some time?” Midoriya blurted, and slapped his hands over his mouth. God, he looked so adorable.

“Yes. I would love to.”

Midoriya melted, green eyes softening, gazing up at Hitoshi in complete adoration. Hitoshi couldn’t help but melt back, lost in his emerald eyes.

The sound of a camera shutter clicking snapped their attention back to Uraraka.

“You guys are so cute!” Uraraka said, eyes focused on the screen of her phone.

She raised her eyes slowly to see both Hitoshi and Midoriya ready to jump.

“You take the left, I take the right,” Hitoshi said. Midoriya deftly nodded.

“No wait! I promise I won’t show anyone - “

Her words were lost to the scuffle that ensued. Luckily, somehow this didn’t manage to get them kicked off the bus.

During the chaos, Uraraka managed to send the photo to one person before it got promptly deleted. Jirou, who smirked, and whispered “Idiots” to herself, before saving the image to herself for later. Both her and Uraraka had lots to talk about. After all, getting the two idiots to sit next to each other had been a joint effort.

And finally it had worked.
