Chapter Text
Sylvie walked into 51, a smile on her face. Matt's fingers were interlaced with hers, and she could smell his cologne.
Dating Matt Casey for the last six months had been pure bliss, and she could honestly say she'd never been happier. The weeks and months of hurt and misunderstandings had no doubt been awful, but she'd do it all again in a heartbeat, because the outcome was definitely worth it.
Sure, they had a deep and complicated history, but at the end of the day, they both deserved to be happy. And that's what they did for each other. They made each other happy. That’s all Sylvie had ever wanted for Casey.
She laughed as Matt gave her one last kiss before they turned their focus to their jobs. They didn't pause their relationship at the doors of the firehouse, but they did set certain boundaries. As Captain and PIC, they had to maintain a certain level of professionalism, even if it was slightly annoying.
However, despite their leadership positions, they could still spend time together on the job. So, they headed to the common room for breakfast together, and Sylvie couldn't help but think that all was right in the world.
She knew it was premature thinking, but she was going to marry Matt one day, she just knew it. She was ready now, but she didn't want to push Matt or make him uncomfortable. So she waited, patiently. She could absolutely wait while Matt and her continued to get to know each other better.
Someday, hopefully soon, she would finally make it past the engagement to the actual marriage. Matt Casey was the one. When you know, you know.
Matt scooted closer to Sylvie. They were at work, so being as close to her as possible would have to suffice. He couldn't pull her in for a kiss like he wanted to, because they were sitting in the common room with everyone, eating breakfast. Even if they weren't at work, he wasn't sure he or Sylvie were comfortable kissing with so many people present. So far, they had saved most of their intimate moments for when they were alone. Small touches and hand holding were common in public, but it didn't often go further than that.
Being in a relationship with Sylvie wasn't something he really wanted to share with anyone else. Finding the words to describe how he felt about her was hard enough. His feelings ran deeper than he ever even thought possible.
It had only been six months, but he was already considering marriage. He didn't want to rush, because that's what caused many of the problems in his other relationships. However, he and Sylvie had been getting closer for years. They already wasted enough time getting together; he didn't want to waste any more. Despite these feelings, so far he had kept the marriage idea to himself. He didn't want to rush Sylvie or do anything against her wishes. Their relationship was the best thing that had ever happened to him, and he didn't want to mess it up. So for now, he'd keep his feelings to himself, although he wasn't sure how long that would last...Sylvie had a way of pushing him to share what he was thinking in a way no one else ever had. Besides, he didn't want to keep anything from her.
For now, he'd continue to wait, and enjoy his time with Sylvie. And that was perfectly fine with him, he realized, as he studied his girlfriend's face. The most important thing was that they had found each other, not that they were married. That would come, because they belonged together. They were right for each other. He would overcome his failed engagements and divorce, and get it right with her.
He was jarred out of his thoughts as the bell went off, calling them all to a fire. Giving Sylvie one last smile and hand squeeze, both of which she returned, they headed out to save lives. Matt couldn't believe his luck. He got to continue doing his dream job, but now his off days were equally amazing, as he spent time with the woman he loves. Life was about as good as it could get right now.
