Osamu was dreaming. He was playing volleyball in an empty volleyball court. By himself, with no one annoying him. He threw the volleyball into the air and was about to spike it when to his amazement, the volleyball transformed into a crumpet the size of an elephant. Osamu dropped back to the ground and watched it warily. The giant crumpet was suspended in the air. It stayed that way for several long moments. Then suddenly, it flipped once and flew towards Osamu. With a squawk of surprise, he jumped backwards, avoiding the crumpet as it hit the floor.
The crumpet landed with a thud and was still for a moment. Osamu began to slowly retreat, then the crumpet flipped itself over again and started to roll right at Osamu, who turned and ran. The court seemed to stretch on forever with no end. As Osamu ran and ran, the crumpet was rolling closer and closer. He was going to get crushed. The smell of the crumpet was overwhelming.
With a gasp, Osamu woke up, breathing hard. The clock beside him glowed in the darkness and showed the time. 2:00 A.M. It was just a dream, thankfully, so then why could he still smell crumpets? He looked around and saw one on his nightstand, looking very innocent and definitely not like the one in his dream. Atsumu must have put that there, Osamu thought irratebly, with a flash of affection. Seriously. With a grunt of disgust, he reached over, grabbed the crumpet and threw it into a trash bin. Then he turned around and went right back to sleep.
“SAMU! SAMU WAKE UP!” Osamu heard Atsumu’s raucous tones from the doorway of his bedroom. He groaned and turned in his bed.
“Shut up Tsumu,” Osamu muttered.
“Come on, get up,” Atsumu walked into the room. Osamu ignored his brother and pulled the blanket over his head. He heard Atsumu say something. Then before he knew what was happening, the sheets were ripped off him. Osamu cursed and sitting up, he saw Atsumu at the side of his bed holding the sheets in one hand and grinning. “Rise and shine!”
Osamu scowled. “Do you mind?” He spat, grabbing his sheets back, he glanced at the time and gave a start of surprise. “It’s only 7:30! There’s still 15 minutes before my alarm rings. You don’t normally wake up until 30 minutes after the alarm goes off.
Atsumu shrugged. “I felt like waking up early today,” he replied.
“Well, since I am now awake because my sleep was rudely interrupted,” Osamu placed heavy emphasis on those words and glared at his brother, “Can I please be left in peace to change?”
“Fine, but you have to be finished in ten minutes.”
“I’ll take as long as I want,” Osamu retorted, “What the heck are you worried about?”
“That you’ll dive straight back into bed the moment I’m gone,” came the blunt reply.
Osamu winced. Atsumu knew him too well. “Okay okay,” he said impatiently. “Ten minutes. Now can I be left alone?” He watched Atsumu leave his bedroom and wondered if he should go back to sleep, but he knew he would have to listen to his brother rant if he wasn’t dressed within ten minutes. So with a resigned sigh, he climbed out of bed and changed. Then, he did his morning bathroom routine before meeting Atsumu at the head of the stairwell, who started to descend down the stairs.
Osamu followed. Feeling slightly annoyed he lingered on every step. Atsumu, seeing his brother, also slowed to a stop. Osamu was taking his sweet time down the stairs when a strange, horrible scent hit him. Immediately recognizing it, he quickened his pace. Atsumu, seeing this, also quickened his pace. This resulted in both of them running full speed down the stairs and Osamu having to smell the scent the whole way down. He gagged and drew in large gulps of air, panting as he jumped down the last few stairs. Atsumu…. He thought with a flash of irritation, always so competitive. He sighed, no point dwelling on that thought. Straightening up, he entered the kitchen.
“Heads up Samu!” Came Atsumu’s voice.
Osamu looked up in time to see two bagels flying through the air towards him. He lifted his arms and caught the bagels, one in each hand. Then he walked over to the table, sat down, and took the cream cheese. Wordlessly, he began to smear the cream cheese onto a bagel.
Atsumu sat opposite of him and was thickly buttering a crumpet. “Cream cheese again?”
“What’s wrong with cream cheese?” Osamu finished with his bagel and took a bite.
“Cream cheese is overrated,” Atsumu began to eat.
“Says who?” Osamu took another bite of bagel.
“Says me.” Atsumu swallowed a mouthful of crumpet.
“That doesn’t mean anything,” Osamu continued eating.
“Cream cheese doesn’t taste good, butter is so much better,” Atsumu ripped out a piece of crumpet.
“No it isn't.
“Yes, it is.”
“No it isn’t.”
“Yes it is.”
They continued to bicker and eat until they finished their piece. Then Atsumu stood up and walked to the refrigerator. He opened the fridge and looked inside. “Apple juice or orange juice,” he muttered to himself.
“Apple,” Osamu began to apply cream cheese to his second bagel.”
Atsumu jerked his head around. “Why not orange?”
“Orange juice tastes bad,” Osamu replied absently.
“Is not!”
“Is too.”
“Is not!”
“Is too.”
“You’re just saying that to-,” Atsumu stopped mid-sentence and stared up at the clock.
Osamu followed his brother’s gaze and sprang to his feet. “Damn it, we’re going to be late.” Stuffing the bagel into his mouth, he began to hurriedly put on his sweatshirt.
“Samu… I have to go to the bathroom,” Atsumu said.
“Are you serious you fool?! Now?” Osamu snarled in disbelief.
“Not my fault!” Atsumu danced around and headed for the bathroom. Osamu hissed and shook his head in exasperation. He waited impatiently until his brother reappeared.
“Finally,” Osamu exclaimed, “What took you so long? I thought you overflowed the toilet.”
“Don’t be silly, I’m not stupid.” Atsumu said breezily, “I was only born two seconds after you.”
“The best two seconds of my life,” Osamu muttered. He rolled his eyes before bolting to the door. Atsumu grabbed the keys and ran after him. Both Miya brothers burst through the door into the morning air… still arguing.
