Episode 2 - You Can’t Get Closer To Him Then Me

Summary:

What if Shin Da On and Woo Tae Kyung are in a secret relationship? Here is my take on the scene from episode 2 when Da On went after Tae Kyung and helped him carry a box of recyclable.

Notes:

Hi, I’m obsessed with this drama and my mind couldn’t stop wondering, “what if Da On and Tae Kyung are in a secret relationship all these while?”. My hands are itching to write more on this AU so I might have a few more coming up based on the episodes. I might do this headcanon for ep 1 next!

Ps. The first half, the dialogue is from the actual episode itself :)

Work Text:

“Woo Tae Kyung. Let’s get along,” Da On cheerfully said as he grinned brightly at the younger boy, “we do a lot in student council so we’ll get close quickly while working on it together.”

Just as Tae Kyung was about to return the other boy’s smile and nod in agreement, a voice butted in.

“If this place is ever messy, it’ll be over,” Shin Woo warned, his stare unwavering, “we won’t go easy on you.”

It took all of Tae Kyung’s willpower to suppress an eye roll towards the Shin Woo. He knows that Da On wouldn’t like it if he showed an attitude, especially to one of his friends. Instead, Tae Kyung stared pointedly at the boy in front of him, “I get it.”

“Ehh, Shin Woo. That’s enough,” Da On said, voice still gentle but there was a hint of firmness. He leaned closer to Tae Kyung, nudging his head slightly in his direction and continued, “stop picking on him on his first day.”

“Right. Didn’t he clean this morning too?,” Namgoong chimed in as he brushed his hand against the tabletop and lifted it up, eyes widened as it came up clean. “Wow, you can eat off this table.”

Shin Woo deadpanned and inched closer to blow Namgoong’s hand, frowning slightly when no specks of dust could be seen floating. Not wanting to lose the upper hand in the conversation, Shin Woo pointed out, “on my way in, I saw that the recycling bin was full”

Just be patient. It’s just going to be a month of putting up with this douchebag. “I’ll go throw it out,” Tae Kyung said behind clenched teeth.

“Why? Do you not want to do it?”

Eyes still intensely looking at the boy in front of him, Tae Kyung placed both his hands on the table and pushed his chair backwards. Clenching his fist, Tae Kyung walked towards the direction of the recycling bin.

You know why you’re doing this. It’s only for a month. Shin Woo is probably going to get bored picking on him sooner or later.

“Haven’t you heard about being polite?” Tae Kyung grumbled to himself as he lifted up the two boxes filled with recyclables.

“Aigo, thank you for letting me be a temporary member,” Tae Kyung continued as he walked down the hallway, “as if.”

Tae Kyung stopped in his tracks and let out huff, “Ya, No Shin Woo, the only reason why I’m even trying to be a member is because…”

“Is because?” a voice piped up from behind. Before Tae Kyung could register the voice, his hands were suddenly one box lighter.

“Da On?” Tae Kyung asked as the older boy stood next to him, throwing him an easy smile.

Tae Kyung attempted to bit back a grin that was struggling to take over his face. His stomach did the usual somersaults, bouncing up and down whenever the older boy was near and all the anger that was holding onto him was gone.

“I thought you might needed a hand in carrying  these.”

“You don’t -“

“Wah, this is so heavy,” Da On interrupted as he feigned struggle in carrying the box filled with empty plastic bottles, “really heavy.”

“Da On,” Tae Kyung said, a hint of whine could be heard as the former pouted slightly at the older boy. One might think that he was whining about the help but Da On knows better. Of course he knows better.

Da On sighed and smiled apologetically at Tae Kyung. Balancing the box with one hand, Da On used the other hand to gently pat Tae Kyung’s head. It isn’t easy being on Shin Woo’s bad side and it hurts his heart knowing that his boyfriend is currently on that side. Da On mindlessly played with his boyfriend’s soft locks, running his fingers through it, hoping it will soothe the younger boy.

Normally the couple would oppose such public display of affection, especially on school grounds but it is currently self study period and no students would be wondering around. Judging by Tae Kyung’s dejected look, he definitely deserve some comfort.

“I know. Shin Woo can be…” Da On trailed off as he attempted to find a fitting word to describe his vice-president

“A jerk,” Tae Kyung helpfully continued his boyfriend’s sentence, smiling victoriously when Da On simply smiled back.

“I won’t deny that Shin Woo can be a jerk,” Da On gave in, “but he is kind and considerate. Maybe even kinder than me.”

“That’s hard to believe,” Tae Kyung retorted as he gazed down. “Everyone looks nice to nice people. They understand why they behave that way.”

Since Day 1 of meeting him, Shin Woo has been nothing but cold and rude to him. But he could see why his boyfriend would think otherwise. Da On sees the good in everyone and believes it and arguing otherwise would be useless because when it comes to defending others, his easy-going boyfriend can be awfully stubborn.

“I won’t blame you for thinking that way. You won’t know each other until you get close. You should use this chance to get close,” Da On ran his fingers to the side of Tae Kyung’s face, gently stroking his cheek. He could see the hesitance on the boy’s face and once bitten, twice shy. He wouldn’t deny that Tae Kyung has been making efforts in befriending Shin Woo and it’s only so much rejection Tae Kyung could take from one person.

“Please? For me?” Da On softly pleaded. He could see the gears in the latter’s head grinding as he attempted to figure out his next move.

Tae Kyung’s resolved broke and he nodded his head, leaning into his boyfriend’s touch, “okay, I’ll try.”

“That’s my boyfriend,” Da On praised, smiling victoriously as he leaned forward to press a light kiss on the top of Tae Kyung’s head, “but you can’t get closer to him then me. You’re still my boyfriend.”

Tae Kyung looked up, only to have Da On quickly steal a quick kiss from him.

“Let’s go. We still need to hand these recyclables over,” Da On said as he finally stepped away from Tae Kyung whose naturally pale porcelain skin was suddenly flushed, “we don’t want the others to wonder what’s taking us so long.”

Tae Kyung stared after Da On who took off first, leaving him eyes widened as he tried to register what just happened in the last few seconds. Realising it wasn’t worth the headache, Tae Kyung shook his head and ran after his boyfriend, “ya! Da On! Wait for me!”

And it will certainly be a headache trying to figure out why was Da On suddenly daring enough to kiss him in public and the sudden possessiveness that his boyfriend was displaying.
