“I’m so glad we ended up going somewhere warm for our honeymoon,” Juniper said, nuzzling closer to Athena in the hammock.
Athena nodded, looking over at the nearby ocean. The waves splashed onto shore in a steady rhythm, receding to reveal colorful shells just waiting to be collected.
They’d done plenty of that this afternoon. Now, they were content to just relax in their hammock.
Suddenly, Athena’s cell phone vibrated in her pocket. She took a glance at the caller ID, and funnily enough, it was Apollo, who was on his own vacation with his boyfriend in Poland.
“What do you think?” Athena said, “Should I take this?”
“Eh, why not,” Juniper said, scooching further up the hammock, so her head rested in the crook of Athena’s shoulder. She pressed “accept call” and was immediately greeted with the noises of loud Polish arguing when she turned it to speakerphone.
“I take it your vacation’s going well, then,” Athena said.
“Klav’s Polish relatives are really fucking loud, Athena,” Apollo said, sounding slightly out of breath, “I’m hiding in the bathroom and I need to talk to someone sane.”
“All Polish families are loud, Apollo,” Athena sighed.
“You’re underestimating these people. A few cousins got into an argument over politics and I’m pretty sure the house started shaking.”
“Grandma’s house used to shake all the time,” Juniper said, “old houses tend to do that.”
“Et tu, Junie?”
“Hey, you called in the middle of our sunset hammock sesh,” Athena said, “you take what you get, buddy.”
“Oh shit, I totally forgot you guys were still on your honeymoon,” Apollo said.
“Besides, you still have your ‘Chords of Steel’, right? Get back out there and assert your dominance, man!”
“I hate the way you phrased that with the passion of ten thousand suns, but yeah, you’re right,” Apollo said before hanging up.
The two women continued to be rocked by the warm winds, listening to the sounds of the waves, until Juniper said, “I’m so glad you talked me out of honeymooning at my cousin’s house in Rio de Janeiro.”
“Me too,” Athena said, holding her wife close to her, with no intention to let go any time soon.
