Chapter Text
“Man I could really go for some beybread right now,” Valt grumbled, staring off into space as his mouth watered.
“At least try and pay attention to the match instead of thinking about your stomach again!” Wakiya huffed from the bench while Shu just smiled.
“Ah it’s fine, we don’t even need a ref because we all know I’m the one winning this!” Rantaro boasted as Roktavor spun to the middle, Doomscizor circling it like a lion.
“Yeah right,” Daigo snorted.
The Beigoma Academy bey club were on top of the school roof training. Again. Sure they could never get sick of beyblading because come on it’s Beyblade, but they sure could use a change of pace. They’d already trained multiple times at Xander’s dojo, though there was only so many traps Valt could take. They’d practiced at Wakiya’s training camp too and even some pretty fancy gyms, but Daigo felt something was missing.
Alright maybe that was just a cover up, but he had only one goal at the moment. He’d talked to Ukyo a bit last time they were at the dojo and the blue-haired ninja had pointed out some very important details.
Now Daigo had never really considered himself much of a cupid, but he was always up to try new things. And his radar was going off like crazy.
And so began Operation Shalt ™
“Awww come on!” Rantaro groaned when Roktavor burst, its pieces scattered across the stadium.
“Wow who would’ve seen that coming,” Wakiya murmured sarcastically before shooting to his feet, “Me next!”
“Back off Goldilocks, I want a rematch!”
“As if! We don’t have the time to wait around and watch you lose again.”
Ah there goes the radar again, but not yet. Those two will be saved for a later date.
“I don’t know guys, I have to go meet up with a friend.” The bickering ceased as everyone turned to look at Daigo.
“Have fun,” Shu nodded, standing up himself. He also looked particularly tired, but that could just be from having to break up Honcho and Wakiya’s fights all day. Dealing with Valt was also never an easy task.
“How about we catch up with you guys later?” The shortest of the group suggested and the others quickly nodded.
“OOOOOH let’s do a team dinner! I’m starving!” Valt groaned, clutching his stomach.
Perfect.
“Sure. Sure. I’ll send you all the details,” and with that Daigo walked towards the stairs, ignoring Rantaro’s and Valt’s screaming about food.
***
“I’m telling you, it’s perfect.”
“I’m not disagreeing, I just have my doubts,”
“…Well I do have someone I can enlist for help.”
Daigo and Ukyo were laying on a grassy hill, just watching the clouds pass by. Their plan was slowly taking shape, but it unfortunately had some holes. Getting Shu and Valt alone without raising suspicion was actually a fairly simple task, as they were already best friends and spent most of their time together. The only problem was that Shu wasn’t stupid.
“Yeah get them to join. It’s not particularly an issue if Shu knows what we’re doing. He’s bound to realize eventually,” Ukyo pointed at the sky, “That one looks like a walrus.”
“Maybe it’ll even be better if Shu knows, get him to confess quicker. And what? No that’s definitely a cat,” Daigo protested.
“You and your cats,” His friend huffed in amusement. Daigo just shrugged and pulled out his phone, dialing a certain number.
It rang twice before a familiar voice came over the line.
“Yes hello? What do you want?” Wakiya’s breathing was labored and Daigo guessed he’d gone back to training. No surprise there.
“What are your thoughts on getting Valt and Shu together?” The line was silent for a second, the sound of whirling machinery filling the static background.
“…like as in a couple?” Komurasaki questioned, a little hesitant though the excitement was a second away from breaking through. Daigo hummed in affirmation and he could almost hear Wakiya smirk.
“Finally. What’s the plan?”
Daigo explained while Ukyo murmured cloud animals under his breath. It was nice to relax like this for a while, away from his crazy friends and with a relatively chill guy, though his constant shadow sneaking was a little unnecessary. Wakiya muttered something about violin music before confirming his participation and promptly hanging up with a brief ‘bye’.
“We’re all set for tonight,” Daigo grinned.
“Great great but does this look like a turtle to you?”
***
“Kiyama!” Wakiya shouted as he charged towards his tall friend and Daigo saw Honcho visibly brace himself, raising an eyebrow and no doubt a retort sitting on his tongue.
“I need your phone,” The blond planted himself in front of Rantaro and held out his hand.
“What? Why? Y’know if you wanted my number, you could just ask,” Honcho glanced from Wakiya to Daigo and Ukyo confusedly.
“Huh? No, I need to borrow it.” Wakiya beckoned with his fingers, eyebrows raised. Rantaro just looked even more confused.
“Why?” He questioned as he drew it from his pocket, though Wakiya snatched it from him with no hesitation and started tapping away.
“Fine fine sure don’t give me an explanation, not like I care,” Honcho grumbled, crossing his arms.
“We need you to tell Valt about canceling tonight, so it’ll be less suspicious,” Ukyo explained tranquilly.
“What do you mean canceling tonight?!”
“Top secret romance business, I wouldn’t expect you to understand, Kiyama,” Wakiya snarked offhandedly as he quickly pressed send.
“Pssh what do you know about romance?” Rantaro balked. He turned on his shorter friend, hands planted firmly on his hips.
“More than you, obviously,” The blond smirked as he handed back the device.
“Yeah right! I bet the only thing you’ve kissed is the ground!” Rantaro countered and Wakiya’s face lit up as he scrambled for words.
“Like you’re one to talk! I saw you kissing a rock the other day!”
“I was making fun of Valt!”
Daigo glanced at Ukyo and found his friend staring right back. They both nodded their heads.
“Come on Wakiya, we don’t have time for this, we have to get to the restaurant soon,” the bandanaed blader grabbed his blond friend’s wrist and dragged him away from the most pointless competitive argument ever.
“I still have no idea what you guys are doin’!”
“You’ll see soon, Honcho!”
***
“Move over, I can’t see,” Wakiya poked his head above Daigo’s, who glared up at him and tugged him by the back of his jacket. He fell back with a thud.
“Don’t let them see you,” Daigo warned as Wakiya grumbled.
“What happened to that ninja guy?” He asked instead.
“Right here.” Ukyo’s voice floated from…somewhere. The blond glanced around and still didn’t see him. He huffed and went back to peering through the bushes.
An exasperated sigh escaped as Daigo stared out at the restaurant. The bushes they hid behind gave them the perfect view of the table Wakiya reserved and now they just had to wait for their victims (friends) to arrive.
Any second now…
.
“Man too bad the others couldn’t make it,” Valt commented as he and Shu turned the corner, being led by a waiter.
“What did Honcho tell you exactly?” His friend asked, eyes narrowed.
“Ah that he wasn’t feeling well. Maybe we really did train too much…,” Valt frowned as his gaze grew distant, “Nah I’m sure it’s totally unrelated.” He shook his head.
“Maybe it’s all the lollipops he eats,” Shu suggested and Valt nodded.
“Your seats, sirs.” The waiter pulled out the chairs and the two quickly sat down.
“Thanks!” Valt exclaimed, Shu nodded politely.
“Can I get you anything to start with?”
“OOOh do you have any breadsticks?” Valt wondered and the waiter smiled.
“Coming right up,” He announced before strolling away, straightening his tie.
“Wow this place sure is fancy,” The blue haired blader stared in awe at the giant chandelier glittering on the ceiling and the plush velvet curtains framing the tall windows. Shu had to agree.
“Wakiya must’ve picked it,” he murmured. So why wasn’t the blond here? It’s unfortunate that they couldn’t make it, but Shu found himself glad he could spend a nice night with just Valt. Still… something felt a little off. He glanced at their clothed table, candle opera lit in the center. Flames danced in the still air and glinted off the rose petals scattering on the white surface. The whole atmosphere was calm and soft violin music floated from somewhere on his left. It all seemed very…romantic.
Shu flushed and now he knew exactly why the others weren’t here. This was a set up.
He glanced around, trying to see if he could find (regrettably) his friends. But all he saw was the musicians standing on a golden stage and perfectly trimmed hedges around the sides of the rooms. He should’ve noticed sooner, almost every table was occupied by a couple.
“Daigo…” he growled softly under his breath as he turned in his seat, determined to find where they were hiding. His friends were surely here somewhere.
And that’s when he spotted it, a tuff of blond hair peeking out from behind a bush.
Of course.
.
“I think he knows,” Daigo whispered to Wakiya, who shot him a look.
“Obviously.”
“Well we did expect this so it doesn’t exactly change much,” Ukyo told them from the shadows. They still didn’t know where he was hiding.
.
“Your breadsticks, sirs. May I take your order this evening? Our famous spaghetti is the special tonight,” The waiter reappeared and placed a small basket on appetizers on their table.
“Spaghetti sounds great, for both of us. Thank you,” Shu ordered as Valt attacked the appetizers. The waiter glanced at the blue-haired blader in distain, but nodded nonetheless and left to prepare their food.
“Wow this place is so fancy,” Valt commented, completely missing their server’s disapproving look and stuffing the rest of the breadstick in his mouth. Shu smiled, eyes shining in amusement.
“Like the candles, the roses, and there’s even violin music! So cool!” Valt’s eyes shined in the candle light and heat rushed to Shu’s cheeks.
“…some might even say romantic.”
.
Daigo’s eyes widened and he turned to Wakiya at the same time the blond did, both of them with a stupid goofy grin on their face.
“Yes!” Wakiya hissed, pumping a fist.
“Always knew he was my favorite,” Daigo murmured as Ukyo chuckled, resisting a cheer of his own.
.
“Huh? Oh I guess.” Valt replied as he shrugged and grabbed another breadstick.
Three simultaneous slaps filled the air as the matchmakers facepalmed.
Shu sighed under his breath just as their food arrived, and the “date” continued as any other time he hung out with his best friend. Valt commented on the spaghetti, saying it was delicious but of course not as good as Shu’s. The red eyed blader had to admit it was pretty good, he wondered if he could ever copy the recipe.
.
“Well this was a bust,” Wakiya grouched, folding his arms.
“If Valt wasn’t so…oblivious, it would’ve worked out fine,” Daigo argued back, but even he was feeling a little disheartened by their failed attempt.
“We need another plan.” Ukyo suddenly dropped from above them , shoes clicking on the cement. Yelps filled the air as the other two jumped and inhaled sharply.
“Thought I told you to stop sneaking up on me,” Daigo grumbled, but he did agree. They needed another plan.
“Well I’m leaving. As super interesting as this has been, I have training to do and the sun is setting,” Wakiya stood up and dusted off his jacket, not bothering to hide anymore.
Daigo wanted to tell him to make sure to rest, but he understood how important Beyblade was (heck he never wanted to rest either), and he didn’t want to be a hypocrite. So he just nodded and bid Wakiya farewell.
The bandana blader frowned as he turned back to the restaurant. Wakiya was right, this hadn’t worked out and it was going to get dark soon. Valt and Shu were even packing up to leave, Valt shoving as many breadsticks as he could in his pockets. They needed to either figure it out soon or today wasn’t the day.
“Too bad this didn’t turn out. The sunset’s pretty though,” Ukyo observed.
Sunset.
Something sparked in the back of Daigo’s mind and the cogs started whirling.
“Come on we have to go catch them before they leave.”
“Huh?”
Daigo emerged from their hiding space and sped walked to the entrance of the building, just in time to run into their friends.
“Oh hey guys,” he greeted unenthusiastically, ignoring the exasperated glare Shu shot him.
“Hey! Sucks that you guys missed dinner, it was really good,” Valt grinned, still munching on a breadstick.
“Yeah sorry about that,” Daigo didn’t really sound sorry, but really when did he ever? “Hey Shu wanna go battle?”
Shu just sighed and nodded, seeming too dejected by the failed date to care. He’d pick himself up soon, Daigo knew he would. Shu was strong, and not easily shaken.
“Oh OH can I join? Can I battle Unicrest?” Valt was practically hopping on his toes as he dug in his pocket to hold out Valtryek. Ukyo’s lips twitched up in a laidback smile, but he shot Daigo a glance first. The short blader nodded and Ukyo’s smile grew.
“Sure, but don’t expect an easy victory.”
As those two launched into a friendly conversation, Daigo started strolling towards the stadium at the park, obviously expecting Shu to follow.
“I am sorry. About the dinner thing,” he admitted as they walked side by side, because he truly was a teeny bit apologetic. Shu just stared at the golden sky, watching pink clouds drift by slowly without replying. Daigo glanced up at him and frowned.
“It’s not your fault. You tried,” Shu shrugged, red eyes still trained on the sun, “I don’t care much about that stuff anyway.”
“Yeah I guess.” The words fell to the ground in a lame attempt at comfort. They didn’t try to talk again, instead falling into a semi-comfortable silence as they traversed the familiar streets of their home town. They reached the park way before the others, who hopefully were following. Instead of going straight for the stadium though, Daigo plopped down on a bench and waited for Shu to join him.
“Having Rantaro send the message was smart, to seem less suspicious. Though I’m mildly insulted you underestimated my intelligence,” Shu joked and Daigo found himself cracking a smile.
“Nah we totally knew you’d figure it out, Honcho’s text was just an extra precaution,” he huffed in amusement.
“And you somehow got Wakiya in on it?” Shu raised an eyebrow and smirked.
“Ah he paid for the reservation and set stuff up. He probably just saw a romantic movie and decided to add candles and rose petals,” Daigo snorted, “I was surprised he even picked up on the chemistry between you and Valt.”
“Though he’ll definitely insist you owe him for dinner or claim he’s the one to credit for getting you guys together.”
Shu wrinkled his nose and chuckled, “Maybe. He’s not very emotionally vunerable and doesn’t always care about others’ feelings, but I think he’ll open up eventually.”
“Through the power of friendship,” Daigo deadpanned and Shu grinned.
“Exactly.”
The clouds had turned more of a purple now as the sun dipped lower and lower, casting a golden glow around them. Though his expression was full of mirth, the core of Shu’s eyes were still a little sad.
“You really like Valt, don’t you?” Daigo questioned, even though he knew.
“Is it ridiculous? Yeah, I do.” Shu offered him a self-conscious smile.
“I don’t know, just seeing him makes me happy. And I know, it’s cheesy, so if you ever breath a word of this, I will kill you. But his smile is just the best and yeah he can be a bit much sometimes, but where will you ever find someone just that enthusiastic about everything? He’s caring too, and can make friends with even the most stubborn people. So yeah, I have a crush on Valt and I like him a lot.”
Warmth flooded Daigo’s chest and he patted his friend’s shoulder fondly. Wind rustled Shu’s hair as he stared at Daigo a little confused.
“WOAH REALLY? I like you too!”
“AH!”
Laughter bubbled in Daigo’s throat and his arms clutched his stomach as he careened on the bench. He’d never heard Shu yelp that loud before! Valt hopped over the back of the bench and landed on it next to Shu. His brown eyes were absolutely shining.
“Do you really mean it?”
Shu looked absolutely mortified. Flushed and in shock, he tried to stutter out a respond.
“Y-yes of course I do.”
Sharp pain jolted Daigo and he glanced behind him to see Ukyo poking his shoulder. The blue haired teen jabbed his thumb towards the exit and turned to leave. Ah right probably a good idea to leave those two alone. Silently scrambling up from the bench, Daigo followed Ukyo out of the park, hands stuffed in his pockets.
“That was smart,” Ukyo complimented, nose to the sky as he stared at the golden clouds.
“I’m just glad it worked.” Daigo grinned, glancing up as well.
“Hey look, that one looks like a whale.”
***
“Y’know you never explained why you guys were acting all weird yesterday,” Rantaro pouted from where he was sprawled out on the ground.
“Doesn’t matter, it didn’t work anyway,” Wakiya huffed as he nudged his friend with the toe of his boot. Honcho swatted at his foot which only made Wakiya more insistent.
“Leave me alone, will ya? Why can’t a man lay on the floor in peace?” Rantaro draped an arm over his face dramatically.
“Because we should be training, or do you want to stay a benchwarmer forever?”
“Oh you’re on!”
Daigo shook his head at his favorite idiots and turned back to the sky. Ukyo always thought the clouds looked like animals but he swore that one was an apple. Or maybe an orange? Wind whistled and the fluff shifted. Well now it’s a banana. Clashes rang in the background as well as indignant shouts and geez do those two ever shut up? There are some (very rare) quiet moments with them, and Daigo knows to savor them whenever they appear. This, though, this was definitely not that time.
Luckily, Shu finally stepped onto the room.
With Valt next to him.
Holding hands.
Beaming, Daigo scrambled to his feet and gave Shu a thumbs up. He flushed slightly but just winked in return.
‘Thank you’ Shu mouthed, Daigo’s smile grew.
“Hey guys!” Valt greeted, waving with the hand not connected to Shu’s.
“Hey bud I-,” Rantaro’s eyes bulged and he glanced from Valt to Shu to their hands to Valt to Shu to their hands to Valt to Shu to-you get the picture. Wakiya snickered, but looked genuinely happy for them.
“Congrats.” He nodded once.
“You-!” Honcho spun on Wakiya, “You knew? Wait THIS is what you guys were doing- Oh my god!” He launched himself at Valt, arms around his neck.
“GOOD JOB BUDDY!”
“THANKS HONCHO!”
“I AM SO EXTREMELY HAPPY FOR YOUUU! And completely disappointed in both of you for not telling me,” Rantaro narrowed his eyes at Wakiya and Daigo, who both could really not care less, “BUT GOOD FOR YOU TOO SHU!” He gave Shu a friendly punch to the shoulder, who just looked really amused.
“Thanks Rantaro,” He smiled then glanced at Valt. His gaze was warm and loving, and now was Daigo’s cue to leave. Wakiya also looked a little awkward, and make a gagging motion to Daigo who just grinned back as he made his way towards the exit. He was happy though, some sunny feeling spreading through his chest.

Chapter Text
(Part A)
“Would you rather fight an elephant sized chicken or 50 chicken sized elephants?”
“Hmmm,” Rantaro rolled the lollipop around in his mouth, contemplating Valt’s question, “Probably chicken sized elephants, I could just smash them all with my fan.”
“But what if they all charged at the same time, y’know like a stampede,” Valt stared at his friend intently.
“Then I’ll just kick them aside. I’m pretty strong and a tiny elephant army is no match for me!” Kiyama pushed aside his jacket and flexed his biceps, making sure to show off. Valt ooed while the others rolled their eyes.
“Wakiya what do you think?” The blue haired blader turned to him, eyes wide.
Wakiya glanced around, searching for Hoji so he could actually have an intellectual and not pointless conversation. Of course his friend wasn’t here though, with only Daigo, Kiyama, Valt, and himself sitting in the gym, so he sighed and succumbed to his fate.
“I agree with Kiyama, smaller enemies are easier to step on,” He nodded resolutely as Rantaro grinned. Well it’s not like he purposely chose to be on his side, it just made more sense.
“You’d just squash them without a second thought?” Valt looked aghast as he glanced between the two.
“Yep.”
“Oh definitely.” They answered at the same time, glancing at each other.
“If these tiny elephants are coming for my life…,”
“Then it’s just in self-defense,” Wakiya finished for Kiyama.
“I guess…but- Oh look it’s Shu! Now we can start training!” A beaming smile cracked Valt’s face as he ran to greet his boyfriend.
“For the record, I agree with you guys too,” Daigo murmured, standing up and dusting off his jacket.
“Of course you do, it just makes sense.” Wakiya smirked, getting to his feet as well. They started walking towards the stadium but Daigo paused for a second to glance back at Rantaro.
“Uh Honcho do you think you could go grab me something from the storage closet?”
“Sure bud, wha’cha need?”
Wakiya totally would’ve listened more, but…he didn’t care, so instead he pulled Wyvron from his pocket and smiled at the shining surface. He remembered the very day he got it. They always say the bey chooses the blader and not the other way around, and frankly Wakiya believed it. His father had actually been home that day, a momentous occasion considering he didn’t even come home for his own son’s birthday, and he took Wakiya aside to explain what would soon become his favorite sport. He’d slept with Wyvron next to him on his pillow that night.
Most of his good memories were connected to Beyblade too. Meeting Hoji, teaching him and his siblings how to play the game, having something to really care about and work towards, and yes as much as he hates to admit it, Beyblade lead him to meet Valt and all his friends. It was…strange, definitely strange to care about someone other than Hoji and he wasn’t even sure when he started caring for these idiots, but he did. They were loud and annoying, but they weren’t so bad.
“Uh Wakiya?” Daigo asked and apparently he was standing on the other side of the stadium, when had he gotten there?
“Yeah let’s battle,” Wakiya snapped Wyvron to its launcher, feeling its restless energy transferring over to him.
“1,2,3 LET IT RIP!”
Their beys raced around the dish, Wyvron immediately taking the center. Perfect. Now all he had to do was wait. He totally had this. Doomscizor raced towards his bey with incredible attack power, but that was all just according to plan. Metallic clashes filled the air as Wyvron was knocked from the middle, swinging back twice as strong just like a pendulum. It crashed into Doomscizor and Daigo’s bey went flying around the dish. An awful screech split their ears as Doomscizor skid to a stop. Well it wasn’t exactly a burst finish, but a survivor finish would have to do.
“Geez…” Daigo stooped to pick up his bey, frowning in concern. Right along the edge of the dish, there was a huge scar etched into the stadium. Wakiya’s self-confident smirk slowly disappeared.
“What’s that?” He questioned, kneeling down as well.
“The force from Doomscizor must’ve scratched it.” A pale finger traced the mark. Well that wasn’t good. Stadiums had to be kept in tip top condition or the beys would veer off course and lose momentum.
“How do we fix it?” Wakiya glanced at Wyvron, admittedly a little proud of it for inflicting that kind of power.
“There’s some special wax in the supply closet if you’d go grab it,” Daigo stood up, examining his bey for any damage. Wakiya wanted to protest considering it was Doomscizor’s fault the stadium was scratched and why should he have to go get the supplies when it was Daigo’s bey, but he supposed he could do his friend a favor. Just this once considering Daigo must be smarting from his loss. Because Wyvron totally destroyed him. Wakiya smirked before heading off towards the hall.
.
“Wax, wax, wax…” Wakiya murmured under his breath as he walked through the doors to the storage closet, running his fingers along the metal shelves. He was sure there was some in here somewhere. Granted, he didn’t exactly come in here…like ever. Having his own gym and stadiums at home left a huge disconnect from the school’s training centers. Besides, they usually used the roof and there wasn’t exactly a storage closet up there. Unfortunately, they were stuck inside because of the rain. Wakiya plucked a small container from a shelf, but upon further exploration, it was just hand chalk. For what? The school didn’t have a gymnastics team did it? This was pointless. He should just get someone else to do this for him, like he always does at home.
Wakiya spun on his heel to leave and maybe force Valt to find the wax for him.
BAM!
Only to see a solid wall of wood an inch from his nose. The door had been slammed in his face.
What the…?
Wakiya jerked the handle, but it wouldn’t budge. He tugged with all his might to no avail. Stupid piece of-
“Geez what was that?”
“Ah!” Yelping, the blond whipped around, chest heaving. A shadowed figure lurked far in the back of the closet and Wakiya pressed his back to the door, willing it with all his might to just burst open before he was brutally murdered by some creep. This was just great, spectacular. This is what he gets for trying to help people.
On second thought…
“Kiyama?!” he snapped. The idiot finally stepped from the shadows, face completely innocent like he hadn’t just given Wakiya a heart attack.
“Uh yeah? What are you doin’ in here?”
“I was looking for wax, for the stadium. But the door just slammed shut and won’t open,” he explained, a little too shaken to be mad at Kiyama for scaring him.
“What do you mean ‘won’t open’?” His voice quivered slightly as he pushed past Wakiya to have his try at abusing the handle.
“I mean it won’t open, Kiyama! It’s locked or something,” The blond huffed as he placed his hands on his hips, standing tall and not at all scared at the idea of being trapped in a small space. For who knows how long. With Kiyama.
Per usual though, Rantaro refused to listen to reason and instead tried to bang his shoulder against the door to break it open. Which was a completely ridiculous idea. All he was going to accomplish was hurting himself.
“Give it a rest, Kiyama. That door isn’t budging,” Finally he stopped and turned to Wakiya, breathing slightly labored from his attempts to destroy the door. Rantaro sighed and ran a hand through his hair, dislodging a few locks.
“Hand me your phone, I’ll call for help,” Wakiya held out his hand. Kiyama just stared at it, moving the lollipop stick from one side of his mouth to the other.
“Why don’t you just use your own?” he wondered, plopping down to sit on an overturned bucket.
“I left it in my bag,” Wakiya stuck his nose in the air, still beckoning with his hands.
“Well mine’s dead,” Rantaro pulled out the handhold and shook it in the air. Its black screen reflected in the dim lighting. Wakiya frowned.
“Why’d you let it die?” he accused.
“Why’d ya leave yours behind?” Kiyama glared, stuffing his useless phone back in his pocket.
“B-because I didn’t need it for training!”
Well now they had no way to call for help. Still they might be able to alert someone to their predicament. Then again if their pounding on the door didn’t alert anyone, their shouting probably wouldn’t do anything. So Wakiya sat on an abandoned crate, legs crossed, and propped his chin on his hand.
Someone would find them eventually. Daigo knew he went looking for wax so he’d certainly come to investigate at some point. It’s not like the closet was especially cramped and Wakiya supposed there could be worse company. At least Kiyama didn’t feel the need to start a conversation.
“Are you claustrophobic?” Aaand he stood corrected.
“No. Why, are you?” Wakiya taunted, though his voice didn’t quite come out as biting as expected. He must be tired.
“Pfft n-no. Just asking.” Kiyama gaze flicked around their small prison, and Wakiya immediately knew he was lying.
“Someone’ll find us soon, don’t worry so much, Kiyama.” Something must really be wrong because since when did he find the need to comfort Rantaro?
“I’m not worrying! It’s just…I’m not a huge fan of being stuck,” His friend (they were friends right?) murmured, gnawing nervously on his lollipop stick. Wakiya sighed, not quite sure what to do now, but he was certain making fun of Kiyama wouldn’t make this easier. He’d never been very good at comforting people and soft words weren’t exactly his strong suit.
Loud screeches filled the air as Wakiya dragged his crate across the tile floor. He situated himself next to Kiyama, going back to crossing his arms, but at least trying to let Rantaro know he wasn’t alone. Hoji would’ve known what to do. Probably Valt too. But they weren’t here and Wakiya didn’t magically absorb their friendliness. Still Kiyama sent him a grateful, admittedly a little confused, look.
Wakiya expected some quip about him finally having a heart or caring, which of course he would adamantly decline, but none came. They just sat in comfortable silence.
.
Okay so…that happened. Granted, it wasn’t exactly Daigo’s best idea, but it should be effective. Perhaps forcing those two to spend time alone would get them to finally grow closer. Or at least stop bickering all the time. Either that or Daigo would open the closet to find them ripping each other’s throats out.
But he wasn’t a monster. Daigo only planned to keep them in there for ten minutes, before releasing them. It had currently only been three minutes and he couldn’t hear any distressed screaming coming from the closet from his place in the gym, so it probably wasn’t going awful.
.
“So what were you looking for before?” Kiyama finally questioned, breaking their silence. All tension had flooded out of his stance.
“Wax, for the stadium,” Wakiya explained, combing his fingers through his ponytail to pass the time.
“Oh! That’s what I was looking for too! It’s in the back.” Rantaro immediately stood up and started ducking behind shelves to rummage in the shadows of the room. A second later, a small container was sailing towards Wakiya and he instinctively caught it. A quick glance and yup that was exactly what he was looking for.
“This should fix up the scratching on the stadium.” He grinned, also getting to his feet. Now if only they could get out of here to use it. Strolling to the door, Wakiya squatted on his haunches and peered at the handle. Jiggling it did no good, it wouldn’t even shift. Which meant it was locked and not that something was blocking or lodged in the door.
“Hey what are the chances of us picking the lock?” Wakiya wondered aloud. It’d be great if they could find the key, but odds were it wasn’t anywhere near.
“Ohhh smart. But what would we use?” Rantaro’s nose scrunched as he immediately started scouring the ground for a paper clip or something. A feeling akin to coziness burned through Wakiya’s fingertips. Kiyama’s enthusiasm, as unnecessary as it was, was commendable. Geez what a ridiculous thought. Wakiya was smiling.
With nimble fingers, the golden blond drew a bobby pin from his hair, brandishing it like it was a trophy and ignoring how some of his locks fell.
“You can get off the ground, Kiyama. I’ve got this covered,” Wakiya boasted. He jammed the small metal piece into the lock and tried turning it.
…Nothing happened.
He shifted it and jiggled the device every which way, but the door didn’t budge. Wakiya growled in frustration. Maybe he just needed to try a new angle. Taking the hair pin out of the lock and shoving it back in proved fruitless though.
“Can I try?” Wakiya jolted at the voice right next to his ear. Kiyama, at some point, had moved to glance over his shoulder. Heat flushed the golden blond’s face in embarrassment, but nonetheless he handed over the device and stood back. Kiyama knelt in front of the lock and very expertly slid in the hair pin. He jerked his wrist a few times and Wakiya swore he had done the exact same thing! Like Kiyama could do any better than-
Click!
Well, what do ya know?
“Ta daaa!” Rantaro boasted as he stood back to his feet, grinning around the lollipop in his mouth.
“Do I even want to know why you know how to pick a lock?” Wakiya was impressed, even if he would in no universe ever admit it. Kiyama shrugged, but didn’t offer an explanation and instead shoved open the door. Light poured into the closet and they both ran out in relief.
“Woo! We did it! Team work!” Kiyama held his hands up in a high ten and Wakiya, just too caught up in the moment really, enthusiastically clapped their palms together. They both beamed.
“Felt like we were in there forever,” Wakiya commented as they both walked back to the gym, wax in hand. Rantaro nodded.
“Ah finally. You guys have been gone for the last five minutes, I was about to worry,” Daigo strolled over to them, taking the container from Wakiya. Oh. Okay so maybe it really was only five minutes, but it felt like an eternity okay?!
Still the short bandana-ed blader was staring at both of them intensely, eyes mostly veiled in shadow. He seemed to be waiting for something, but Wakiya wasn’t quite sure. Weird kid. Still he didn’t feel exactly inclined to explain what happened in the storage closet, other than to poke fun at Rantaro’s claustrophobia. So instead he shrugged and made his way towards one of the stadiums.
“So which one of you is ready to lose?” He taunted, flipped his hair over his shoulder and pulling Wyvron from his pocket.
“Oh you’re on, ponytail!”
.
Daigo sighed as he watched the two blonds run off. Well they didn’t seem much different, but something had definitely changed. Maybe their respect for each other grew? Maybe his plan of forcing them to work together had been successful, because seriously how did they get out of the locked room? Still, it wasn’t much and they were back to their bickering selves in no time. This was going to be harder than Daigo originally thought.
(Part B)
“Well Wakiya really started working with you guys as a team once you saved him from his fear of heights right?” Ukyo questioned.
“Yeah, why?” Daigo held his hand in front of his eyes to shield them from the sun as he watched the fluff stretch across the perfect blue sky.
They were currently up at Xander’s dojo, but this time with the whole squad. It was summer break, which of course meant training time. Valt had been titled the best blader in the world (though some would obviously protest) and decided that they should all go home to Japan for a bit to practice. Xander immediately volunteered his dojo even though Wakiya argued for his cabin. It was nice to see everyone again as it was hard to keep up with his friends from all the way in France. He hadn’t seen Ukyo since winter when he’d come home for his birthday and that was even brief as most of his time was spent with his little brother. It was also nice seeing Ken again.
When Wakiya had shown up in his plane with Valt’s family, Hoji, and Ken in the back to pick him up, he’d been mildly confused. He didn’t even get an explanation since the blond shoved him onto the air craft and only later told him they were going to support Shu and Valt in the tournament. But he was glad Wakiya essentially kidnapped him, because he got to catch up with Ken and the others. He hadn’t realized how much he missed them all and how homesick he’d gotten.
Laying in the grass, listening to everyone arguing and laughing in the background was seriously nostalgic.
“Maybe we could force another one of those scenarios,” Ukyo shrugged as he stretched his arms and settled them behind his head. Daigo’s nose scrunched up in thought. It…could work. Now he just had to get over the fact that he’d feel pretty bad putting his friend in danger. Well not really danger, but he would at least be giving Wakiya a good scare.
“Sure, what’s your plan?”
Ukyo shifted so he could face Daigo as a sly smile spread across his face.
.
Well this was certainly…interesting. Wakiya had never actually been to Xander’s dojo before, on the account that they weren’t actually friends. Acquaintances was a better term. He had to admit he was impressed though. They were all given a little tour and Wakiya immediately had respect for the laughing giant. The trek up here was a work out alone, but the added traps made it extra grueling. Then he saw their bey stadium. The spikes were deadly looking and Wakiya was practically buzzing to get to use it. Of course it wasn’t as cool as any stadiums he owned, but it was still amazing. They didn’t get a chance to use it though, something both him, Silas, and Cuza seemed severely disappointed about, because Xander insisted they do his pre-lunch work out (whatever that was).
So now they were standing all in a line, staring at a trail leading into the forest. Wakiya pulled off his jacket and gently set it down on a bench, letting the sun soak into his black t-shirt. He also tried to ignore how Yugo glared at him from down the line. Wakiya may have just perhaps provoked the samerai earlier, and earned his scorn for the rest of eternity.
Silas glanced between Wakiya and Yugo, snorting as he crossed his arms.
“Create a new enemy already?” he snarked. Wakiya just shrugged, smug smirk on his face as he readjusted his gloves.
“He said he could beat me in a battle.” That was plenty explanation. Silas cackled, imagining Wakiya as he ruthlessly insulted Yugo’s bey, all with a smile. Of course they hadn’t actually gotten to battle yet and that’d have to be saved for later, but obviously the blond was going to win.
“Alright guys we’re doing a special path today! Ukyo requested it, so everyone try to beat him to the end,” Xander yelled out, clapping his hands together. Ukyo just snickered.
“WOOO I’m totally getting there first!” Valt exclaimed, fists in the air.
“Yeah right! No one’s faster than me!” Cuza challenged back. Frankly, Wakiya’s money was on Cuza, the performer was very agile and nimble. Of course it didn’t matter because Komurasaki would still crush them all. He had tons of running experience and he was positive he had the best endurance here, though Shu’s was a close second. Then again Xander and the other dojo bladers knew the track better.
“I’m definitely winning this,” Silas grinned, all pointed teeth and no mirth.
Wakiya snorted, placing his hands on his hips, “As if.”
“Yeah ‘cuz I’m gonna be the one winning!” Rantaro’s voice rang out from behind them as he finally took his place on Wakiya’s left. He’d abandoned his jacket, much like the golden blond had, and was currently stretching.
“Everyone do your best and stay safe!” Xander’s voice floated from where he merged with the line, and everyone knelt into running position.
“You’re on, Kiyama,” Wakiya smirked as their gazes locked, eyes narrowed. Rantaro grit his lollipop between his teeth until it cracked and grinned back.
“READY, SET, GO!”
All at once, everyone took off towards the trees. Boots pounded against the dirt trail, kicking up dust as shouts filled the air. Shu’s laugh floated from where Valt immediately tripped and fell on his face and Wakiya spotted Ukyo swinging up to the trees amongst the chaos. The trail was only wide enough for five people to run side by side and Xander, Yugo, Cuza, Wakiya, and Silas immediately took the lead, everyone else on their heels. Of course this could change at any time, as shown when Silas stumped his foot on a log and wiped out, face grinding into the dirt.
“And that’s why you should be careful, people!” Xander called back as Wakiya burst into peals of laughter.
Silas pushed onto his elbows and growled, flipping the cackling blond off. Rantaro, that stupid saint, immediately stopped and extended his hand to help up his friend, admittedly he was snickering too. Silas stared in surprised, but took his aid anyway, letting Kiyama tug him to his feet. Daigo, Shu, and Valt ran past them, waving as they went and Wakiya left the other two behind to join them.
On the path in front of them, several logs lay on the ground and Xander, who was at the front of the pack, vaulted over all of them perfectly. Why’d he have to be so freaking tall? Daigo stared at the logs, contemplating how to get over considering they were up to his waist. Of course, Valt just leapt as high as he could and bounced over every single one. Cuza hopped on top of the wood, jumping to each log instead of over them.
Breathing only slightly labored, Wakiya dashed into the next leg of the training path.
“Well.” He stared up at the giant wooden wall, watching as a whoosh of blue hair disappeared over the summit. Fraying ropes hung from the top, but that certainly couldn’t be safe. Wakiya frowned.
“See ya, Wakiya!” Rantaro called as he launched himself at a rope, latching on and planting his feet against the wall. He tossed an infuriating smile over his shoulder before scrambling up the wall. Well obviously Wakiya couldn’t be out done! Growling under his breath, he grabbed another rope, ignoring the burn in his palms. Upper body strength wasn’t exactly his forte, but there was no way he was going to lose to Kiyama.
Grunting and arms aching, they both pushed themselves over the wall, crashing to the bottom with a thud.
“Ha!” Silas landed perfectly on his feet next to them and kept running, leaving them behind.
“I win!” Wakiya cheered, pushing himself up and grimacing at the dust covering his shirt.
“In your dreams! I won!” Dirt covered Rantaro’s face but he didn’t seem to care. Or maybe he just didn’t notice.
“Yeah right!” Wakiya snorted, sprinting along the path again, Kiyama right on his heels.
Even though his arms were burning, his legs pumped with all their might, carrying him as he poured on speed. He was intent on escaping Rantaro, but by his labored breathing stayed down Wakiya’s neck. Suddenly, they were nose to nose, eyes locking as green whirled past. Sparks flew and the air crackled. The sharp scent of pine filled Wakiya’s lungs and his eyes stung as their shoes kicked up dust, but he was finally able to pull ahead of Kiyama just a little. Hah! He clearly wasn’t built for endurance. Wakiya reveled in his small victory, but didn’t let up as he darted down the trail.
“AH!”
Digging his heels in, Wakiya skid to a stop and whipped around to find what that panicked shout was about. Not like he was concerned or anything, but when Rantaro panicked, it wasn’t usually good.
And up there, hanging from a tree branch, was Kiyama. Stuck in a net. Wakiya erupted into laughter.
“Hey don’t laugh!” Rantaro yelled, crossing his arms. Or at least he tried, but being stuck in a very small trap made that difficult. Wakiya doubled over, clutching his stomach.
“It’s not funny!” Kiyama whined, tugging on the rope of his prison. Of course the golden blond begged to differ as he wiped a stray tear from his eye.
“Have fun hanging around, Kiyama!” He called, letting out of the last of his chuckles before turning around.
Though he didn’t get very far because the second he took a step, the ground shifted. A yelp tore its way from his lungs as Wakiya was flung into the air, head spinning as he tried to assess what happened. All he could hear was Rantaro’s cackling. Oh come on! Wakiya was stuck in one of those stupid nets! Shooting a withering glare at Kiyama (that only served to make him laugh harder), he watched as everyone sprinted past on the ground. Valt even waved up to them as he ran past. The nerve!
“Watch out for traps!” Shu, very helpfully, warned the blonds.
“Thanks,” Wakiya deadpanned and he swore he saw that cheeky little shit smirk. Daigo just sent the two thumbs up as he expertly dodged the suspicious looking patches of dirt on the ground. Rude.
“Well now we’re both going to lose! This is all your fault!” Wakiya shouted at his hanging friend.
Rantaro’s eyes narrowed and he stared in disbelief, “How is this my fault?!”
Wakiya chose not to answer that and instead focused on the knot holding the trap together. Fortunately, the net was pretty close to the ground and he could easily just drop. Considering he could get out of it in the first place.
Digging his fingers in between the rope, he started pulling at the knot, loosening it bit by bit.
“Hey what’re you doin’?”
His hands was still red from scaling the wall and part of the line tore through his skin, but the tie was almost unraveled. Wakiya stuck his tongue out in concentration.
“Wakiya what-,” All at once, the net gave way and the golden blond crashed to the ground with a thud. Ugh his tailbone was so going to be bruised in the morning.
“Oooh smart,” Rantaro admonished and quickly turned to begin working on his trap. Wakiya wondered if he could still beat the others, but at this point doubted it. Well no point in rushing ahead then, he could wait until Kiyama got down to at least give the other boy a chance.
Rantaro fell with an ‘oof!’ but seemed otherwise unharmed. He pushed himself to his feet and gave Wakiya a lopsided grin. His heart stuttered.
“Come on let’s go,” Wakiya beckoned, turning around as fast as he could and not even wanting to wonder why his face felt flushed. It was just from all the running.
Obviously.
They continued down the path, avoiding traps and dodging falling boulders (seriously what was Xander thinking?!). Rantaro dashed forward and started walking across- Wakiya froze. There was no way. Oh god.
In front of him, was a huge yawning chasm. The two sides were only connected by a flimsy looking bridge that really shouldn’t even be considered a bridge because in reality, it was just three logs slashed together. There was no way that was safe! And absolutely no way, Wakiya would be crossing it.
He felt his knees shaking before his brain even jolted out of shock. He’ll just…he’ll just go back the other way. Surely the others would understand.
“Uh Wakiya?” Rantaro’s voice just briefly split through his haze of fear and the golden blond glanced up. Though, he really preferred the sight of his shined boots instead of the FREAKING DEATH TRAP SITTING RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM.
Kiyama was currently standing over said death trap and looking back confusedly. Wakiya wanted to be sick. And it must’ve shone on his face, because realization dawned in Rantaro’s eyes.
“It’s perfectly safe. All the others crossed,” he started, raising his hands in a placating manner and returning to solid ground.
“How could that be safe?!” Wakiya shrieked and he would normally be embarrassed but really there was no room for self-consciousness when one was faced with death.
“It’s only four meters!” Kiyama smiled sheepishly, but of course that didn’t calm the racing of Wakiya’s heart.
His nerves were cold, “Four meters too long!”
Rantaro sighed and planted himself in front of his friend.
“We have to finish the training if we want to battle y’know. I thought you challenged Yugo, ya have to beat him!” Confidence filled his stance and Wakiya had no idea how he was so calm.
“Yeah but…,” he peeked over Kiyama’s shoulder. No. Nope. No way. Wakiya screw his eyes shut.
“We can’t go back the other way. This’ll be faster and we can’t get back over that wall,” Rantaro’s voice was soft and gentle. It was soothing.
Logically, Wakiya knew he was right, they really couldn’t go any other way, but his feet didn’t dare move. Sweat dripped down his neck and, despite his best efforts to calm it, his heart still raced.
Suddenly, something warm wrapped around his hands. Jolting in surprise, Wakiya’s eyes shot open and saw Rantaro right in front of him, fingers wrapped around Wakiya’s. He lightly tugged his friend and the golden blond found himself taking a step forward. Then another. And another.
They continued their dance, gazes locked. Wakiya had never noticed the amber specks in Rantaro’s otherwise brown eyes. Had he always had those freckles too? Surely, he would’ve noticed that before. Maybe they only showed up in the summer. Wakiya liked them.
Wait, what?
Something bumped into Wakiya’s toe and all thoughts scattered from his head. They were here.
In front of that bridge of death.
The ground seemed to slip away and Wakiya felt like he was floating, head sitting on a cloud of fear. He started shaking again.
“Just one step. You’ve got this.” At least Kiyama’s voice was reassuring, but the golden blond was positive he didn’t have it in him to move. His feet were glued to the dirt.
Still, he just kept staring at Rantaro’s encouraging face. He could do this. He could do this. How bad could it be? Well he could slip and fall and die and-
Wakiya stepped up onto the bridge.
Rantaro beamed and Wakiya felt at least a little rewarded, if not also completely engulfed in fear. The hands in his were still grounding him though, even if everything felt so far away.
Alright. This isn’t so bad. Now he just has to walk, something Wakiya’s got plenty of experience in. Well at least it seemed that simple, if just his feet would respond to his brain.
Then again his mind was just constant screaming, so what good did that do his motor skills, really?
Another step. Another smile. Rantaro’s gentle voice urging him on.
He was really doing it! He was doing it!
Just don’t look down. This was easy. Just don’t look down. Don’t look down. Don’t look down. Don’t look-
“Oh geez,” Wakiya whimpered, staring at the yawning abyss below. It was going to swallow him up any second! He needed to get off this bridge! Of course that was the moment all his limbs decided to lock up. He was petrified.
“Hey hey it’s okay just-,”
“Ki-kiyama I can’t move. I c-can’t- you hafta get me off this bridge. I-I,” That drop looked awfully far down.
“O-okay just hold on,” His voice was so far away. Everything seemed so far away. God he was going to die.
Suddenly, his chin was jerked up, ripping his eyes from the gaping hole, and something was shoved in Wakiya’s mouth.
“Wha-?!”
“What flavor is it?” Wakiya blinked as he stared at his friend, confusion taking over his fear. Why…why was there a lollipop in his mouth?
“What are you-?”
“Just answer the question! I challenge you to guess what the flavor is!” Rantaro nodded definitely. Wakiya rolled the candy around in his mouth.
“I don’t know how you eat so many of these. They’ll rot your teeth y’know,” he quipped instead of answering his friend’s question. Kiyama glared though and Wakiya finally relented.
“Fine fine mmm,” Well it was definitely some sort of citrus, the fruity flavor coating his tongue.
“Lemon?” Rantaro took his hands again.
“No.” He grinned.
“Orange?”
“Nope!” Ugh, Wakiya shut his eyes and concentrated on the flavor. This should be simple! Why did he even care so much?
“Grapefruit?”
“Nuh uh.” Sighing in frustration, the blond ground his teeth against the candy, running his tongue over it and searching every citrus fruit he knew in his brain. It certainly wasn’t just a berry or some kind of melon. Even if he didn’t eat candy often, Wakiya still knew enough about the flavors to guess.
“Lime?!”
“Hah nope.”
“Well then what is-?!” Wakiya’s eyes snapped open and he immediately glanced down, feeling a dip in his walking. He was across the bridge.
He was across the bridge.
But how? When…?
“Now come on! We gotta get back to the others!” Rantaro…oh he had a cheeky grin on his face. Of course he did.
“Y-you tricked me!” Wakiya sputtered, ripping the lollipop from his mouth.
“It got you across the bridge, didn’t it?” …Wakiya supposed that was true and Kiyama did help with his fear of heights on multiple occasions. It’d be kind of rude to not express his gratitude, wouldn’t it?
“Thanks,” he mumbled. Rantaro beamed.
“Any time! Let’s go, the others are probably waiting for us,” Kiyama let go of Wakiya’s hand, but the golden blond quickly intertwined their fingers. Rantaro glanced at him in surprise and Wakiya tried to ignore how flushed his face was getting.
“I’m still shaking. I could fall,” Wakiya stuck his nose in the air, but he knew Rantaro saw through his act. Still he didn’t let go and they started strolling back down the path.
“By the way…the lollipop was lemon.”
“I KNEW IT!”
(To no one’s surprise, Ukyo had won the race. And yes Wakiya beat Yugo in their battle. Of course he gloated.)
(Part C)
When Honcho and Wakiya had walked back to the dojo hand in hand, Daigo figured he had finally succeeded.
APPARENTLY NOT!
That was summer and not one of them said anything about it! It was currently winter! They had emerged from the forest holding hands, faces flushed and admittedly Wakiya looked a little pale, but then they broke apart and didn’t mention it at all. Ukyo had frowned and said obviously something happened and his plan of getting Wakiya to confront heights must’ve worked, but it still wasn’t enough.
So now they were forced to sit and watch as the two blond idiots danced around each other, in this sick game of love.
“God they’re so obvious,” Silas groaned, running a hand down his face. Daigo had to agree. The two were getting along even more, though they were still as competitive as ever, and it was kind of sickening. They blushed whenever the other would get too close, and the way they looked at each other when they thought the other wasn’t watching(Rantaro’s dreamy expression was sickeningly adorable). Wakiya even smiled more often around Honcho more than anyone else.
“Seriously,” Daigo deadpanned.
“I don’t know. Maybe they’re just meant to be friends,” Ukyo shrugged from his place on Daigo’s left. Both Silas and Daigo fixed him with a disbelieving stare, to which he just shrugged.
“No no I’m definitely not wrong about this. They just need a push. Ukyo, go flirt with Wakiya.” Silas snorted violently in surprise before bursting into laughter. Ukyo just turned to Daigo with bored eyes.
“Alright.” He shrugged again and started crossing the gym towards Wakiya.
“This is a great idea,” Silas cackled, shaking his head and leaving to go back to training. Daigo just grinned.
Now to go bother a certain lollipop loving teen.
.
“Aw man!” Rantaro grumbled as he scooped up Roktavor’s pieces. Of course Valt cheered from the other side of the stadium.
“I’ll beat you next time!” They were all training in France for Daigo’s birthday. Unfortunately they had to practice inside because who would’ve guessed but France is really stinkin’ cold in January. And Honcho just counted up his third loss of the day. Out of…four matches.
Maybe he could battle Daigo next. He seemed to at least have a decent track record with him.
“I’m gonna take a quick break,” Rantaro waved his hand and Valt nodded, leaving to pester his boyfriend who seemed to be arguing with Cuza. Grabbing his waterbottle and taking a swig, Honcho scanned the gym.
Hm. Since when did Ukyo hang out with Wakiya?
“Hey.” Rantaro jumped and immediately started coughing. He pounded his fist against his chest until his lungs felt clear enough for an easy breath.
“Uh hey,” He greeted Daigo, who was smiling in amusement. Loud laughter rang from the opposite side of the gym and his gaze was once again drawn to his blond friend. He seemed to be getting along…well with the ninja. Not that it was super surprising or anything. Still Ukyo seemed awfully close to Wakiya.
“You’re staring y’know,” Daigo commented.
“Since when were those two friends?” Rantaro asked, tone only mildly accusatory.
And why was Ukyo’s hand on Wakiya’s?
.
Oh this was just too good. Daigo tried to stomp down the giggles bubbling in his throat. Ukyo, to his surprise, was an excellent flirter. He was smiling flirtatiously and complimenting Wakiya left and right. He even placed his hand over Wakiya’s, who stared at it in confusion.
Honestly, knowing Wakiya, he probably didn’t even realize Ukyo was flirting with him. He just had one hand on his hip and accepted the praise.
Daigo knew Wakiya wasn’t one to be emotionally vulnerable and often didn’t share how he felt, while Rantaro was pretty much the exact opposite, so it made sense that the ponytailed blader was boasting and all bravado even if he was blushing.
“Uh I don’t know. They talked a little last time they were at the dojo.” Daigo shrugged, feinting nonchalance. He caught Silas glancing over out of the corner of his eye and almost grinned at his friend’s expression.
“Oh. Right makes sense,” Honcho rolled the lollipop stick from one side of his mouth to the other. Rantaro was still staring at Wakiya, but he didn’t seem to be making any moves and Daigo was eager to move this along.
“Honestly, I think he’s flirting with him.”
.
Flirting?
FLIRTING?
Ukyo was flirting with Wakiya.
Honcho’s chest tightened and a flame ignited in his stomach. And he wasn’t quite sure why.
“…flirting? W-why?” He finally noticed the blush on Wakiya’s face and how Ukyo leaned in even closer to his friend. The flame grew.
“I’d guess Ukyo likes him. He’ll probably ask him out or something,” Daigo shrugged, much too calm about this situation. Seriously how could he be so serene when Wakiya, their friend Wakiya, was being flirted with?!
“I-well he shouldn’t,” is the response Rantaro finally settled on. Because it was true! Ukyo and Wakiya together was just…wrong.
“And why’s that?”
“Well he doesn’t even know Wakiya that well! He’s a very particular person! Li-like does Ukyo even know his favorite lollipop flavor?” Honcho finally tore his gaze away from the blond and settled it on Daigo. He wasn’t sure why but he definitely had to prove his point.
“I thought he didn’t like lollipops,”
“He does! His favorite flavor is lemon! A-and did you know his favorite season is winter? But he also likes the beach.” Rantaro’s eyes floated back to Wakiya. “And honestly his only real family is Hoji and he needs people to be there for him, but of course he’s just too proud to admit it. He’s strong, but even the strongest need someone to lean on.”
“I-I just don’t think Ukyo is that person.” He nodded and turned back to Daigo, only to find his friend with a soft knowing smile on his face. What? What did he say?
“And who is?” he asked, purple eyes searching. Rantaro stared back for a second. Well the answer was obvious! It’s…
Oh.
OH.
Honcho spun on his heel and stomped across the gym, feeling Daigo’s smile on his back. He planted himself in front of Ukyo and Wakiya, who stopped their conversation to glance at him in confusion.
“Kiyama what-,”
“I LIKE YOU! LIKE MORE THAN FRIENDS!” Rantaro blurt out, face burning.
Wakiya just stared at him, blue eyes wide and mouth gaping. Red steadily splashed across his cheeks. Honcho just barely registered Ukyo slinking away as he kept his gaze on his friend. Seconds ticked by. His heart pounding in his ears drowned out any other sound. Though there wasn’t any other because the gym was dead silent. Nobody said a word.
A minute pasted and dread started pooling in Rantaro’s stomach as he shuffled his feet awkwardly. His teeth grit the lollipop in his mouth. Maybe he’d made a mistake. Why did he-? Oh geez.
“Um do you-?”
“YES! I like you too, like uh m-more than friends!” Wakiya exclaimed at last and the whole gym let out a collective sigh. The blonds’ grins could out rival the sun.
.
“Alright I’ll admit you were right. They are very cute,” Ukyo relinquished.
Daigo just held out his hand and the ninja quickly clapped their palms together. It may have taken around two years, but mission blondies was complete. And a job well done it was, if the two giggling and blushing idiots were any indication.
Now…who’s next?

Chapter Text
“Hey honey, will you go set the table?” Shu’s voice floated from the kitchen.
“Course darling!” Valt leapt up from the couch and started towards the dining table.
Wakiya looked at Daigo and made a fake gagging motion, making his friends snicker.
“Ya gotta admit, they’re cute though,” Rantaro commented from his place behind his boyfriend, looking up from braiding Wakiya’s hair. Or trying to at least.
“This is just their honey moon phase, they’ll be back to normal by the end of the week,” Wakiya scoffed.
“They’ve been together for like a year and a half.” Ukyo rose an amused eyebrow, taking a sip from his punch. Daigo chuckled.
“Sweetie pie will you grab the spaghetti?” Okay now they were just doing it to spite them. Wakiya turned to stare up at Rantaro on the couch.
‘Pie?’ he mouthed. Honcho just shrugged.
“Food names are apparently affectionate,” Ukyo grinned.
“Obviously, right cupcake?” Rantaro nudged Wakiya, who glanced back and glared.
“Absolutely…celery,” he smirked. Honcho wrinkled his nose, looking mildly affronted.
“Aww chicken nugget you’re too sweet!”
“No you are, cabbage!”
“No really, egg.”
“BROCOLLI!”
“CHEESE!”
Ukyo turned to look at Daigo. “What have we done? We have inflicted this on the world,” he deadpanned.
Daigo winced, “I didn’t know this was going to happen.”
“I think we should just stick with babe,” Wakiya finally cut off their quarrel.
“What, you didn’t like cupcake?” Rantaro snickered as his boyfriend blushed.
“I mean…,”
“Oh my god shut up! I’m going to puke from adorableness.” Daigo groaned, tugging his bandana over his eyes while the others laughed.
Short knocks rang through the apartment and everyone turned, giggles still dying down.
“Heeeyyyy guys! Guess who’s here!” The door swung open to reveal Xander Shakadera and Ren Wu Sun.
“XANDER!” Valt cheered as he went to greet his friend, leaving the silverware to clatter to the table. The giant laughed and ruffled his hair.
“Hey buddy, you’re getting taller!” He exclaimed, voice full of mirth. The two continued to enthusiastically shout at each other while Ren Wu greeted the others calmly.
Daigo offered a small smile to the dojo master and glanced between him and Xander.
His radar was going off the charts.
Once everyone was acquainted, they all launched into polite conversations while Shu finished up the food. Daigo had helped in the kitchen early, but was now free of his duties so he grabbed Ukyo and pulled him aside.
“Those two…,” he gestured between their new guests, “definitely compatible.”
Both Xander and Ren Wu were very blunt and straight forward people. Daigo might not even need one of his schemes this time. It was probably easier just to say it directly to their face. And that’s exactly what he was going to do.
Ukyo glanced at them and back at Daigo, nodding along.
“Uh Daigo wai-,”
But he was already moving. Hands stuffed in his jacket, Daigo strolled up to Ren Wu and Xander, ignoring the way he had to crane his neck to look up at him. Luckily Rantaro, Valt, and Wakiya were too busy arguing to notice.
“Has anyone told you guys you’d make a cute couple?” he wondered, face completely blank.
All at once, Xander bellowed in laughter and Ren Wu grinned.
“Well I should hope so,” the dojo master chuckled.
“We are dating!” Xander explained, still laughing and placing his hands on his hips, whole body shaking.
“Oh,” Daigo fought to not let his face heat. “Good for you,” he dipped his head before retreating back to Ukyo, glaring at his friend.
“I tried to warn you,” he snickered.
“Whatever.” Daigo grumbled, trying to hide his embarrassment.
“Alright food’s ready!”
***
He can’t believe he’s doing this. Daigo, former captain of AS Gallus, was now co-director of a Joshua Burns movie. That was…actually pretty cool.
Joshua’s whole cast quit right before a shoot, all of them coming down with some really contagious disease after they went to a party, and of course the first thing he did was call Valt. They weren’t exactly close, but he remembered when the famous blader had acted in his movie back when he was at BC Sol, so this was his best shot.
Of course, because he’s Valt, Valt said yes and invited all his friends.
“Hey Ukyo, will you grab those lights?” Daigo called and watched as his friend darted away. At least it was a sunny day, with some stray clouds wisping about. It was nice to see everyone again too. They’d all been so busy over spring, it was hard to find time to meet. Daigo had spent most of his time in Japan, wanting to help his brother since he was finally old enough to enter tournaments.
Admittedly, they were just small tournaments held at his school, but Daigo was proud nonetheless. It also meant he had more time to spend with a certain ninja. They didn’t usually hang out at the dojo though, Yugo still smarting after that stunt pulled all the way back then, and instead chose to enjoy the good weather or just hang out. It was nice to have someone just to sit with, who wasn’t as physically and mentally demanding as Valt and the others.
“Hey Daigo, what about those two?” Ukyo’s voice suddenly appeared from his right. Daigo had gotten slightly more used to the shadow walker’s antics, after dealing with Clio back on AS Gallus, but he still jumped every time.
Sending a brief reproving look at his friend, Daigo followed his gaze as it settled on Free and Joshua.
Joshua seemed to be doing his usual and for once, Free seemed to entertaining it. Those two’s friendship had been thin at best in the beginning and after Joshua lost in that one tournament, it was definitely rocky. It seemed like they sorted it out though. It wasn’t like Daigo was friends with either of them though. His radar pinged back at him.
“Hmmm no. They don’t need help,” he decided. Ukyo just looked at him confused.
“Really? Because…,”
“They’ll figure it out. In time. In time.” Daigo turned to head towards his seat, glancing at all the chaos around him.
“YOU CAN’T BEAT ME IN THE BATTLE! I’M THE HERO!”
“Then get better.”
“UGH!”
In time.

Chapter Text
“Alright everyone listen up!” The doors slammed open as Wakiya stomped to the front of the room. Xander, Ren Wu, Valt, Shu, Rantaro, and Silas all glanced up from their card game.
“Uhhh what’s up?” Rantaro wondered, raising his eyebrows.
“I say we get our revenge on Daigo and Ukyo for their matchmaking! Give ‘em a taste of their own medicine!” Wakiya announced, hands on his hips and chin up.
“But they didn’t-,”
“Yes I know you two were technically already together,” he waved off Ren Wu and Xander.
“Plus…I don’t know why we need revenge? They helped us all,” Valt tilted his head in confusion.
“Wait they did?” Rantaro glanced around the room.
“Seriously, Kiyama?” Silas pinched the bridge of his nose, exasperated. Well that makes two of us.
“Yes! They’re always meddling, so why don’t we do some meddling of our own!”
“Ohhh I think I know where you’re going with this.” Shu sat a bit straighter. Clarity also lit up Ren Wu and Silas’s eyes.
“Exactly, thank you. We’ve all seen the way they look at each other.” Nods came from the three.
“You’re saying we do some matchmaking of our own. For Ukyo and Daigo,” Xander laughed, “I’m in!”
Valt nodded enthusiastically too. Of course, it was his own boyfriend who had to be difficult.
“I don’t know…isn’t it wrong to be messing with their love life?” Rantaro rolled his lollipop around in his mouth, staring at Wakiya earnestly.
“Of course not! It’s helping. I’m being helpful.”
“A rare occasion.” Wakiya glared at his boyfriend, but Rantaro finally seemed onboard. Whatever works.
“Okay but this is why I’ve enlisted you guys! I know…almost nothing about their friendship. What do they like?”
Silas immediately shrugged, of course he wasn’t going to be any help.
“Everyone likes beybread!” Valt shouted, having Xander and Rantaro add their agreements.
“Uh no,” Wakiya turned to Shu, considering Ren Wu barely knew them too.
“Well…,” he pondered, finger tapping his chin, “I think they like cloud gazing.”
Something clicked.
“Oh I know just what to do. Thanks, Shu.” Wakiya immediately spun on his heel and started dashing out the door.
“Good luck,” Shu chuckled.
.
Daigo flopped onto his back, letting the warm sun soak into his black clothing. Ukyo sat down on the grass next to him, running his pale fingers through the grass. Birds provided a melody as soft wind caressed their hair. It was a beautiful day.
“That one looks like a duck,” Ukyo pointed, murmuring into the calm air.
“I don’t know, I’m getting cactus.” Daigo admitted.
“Cactus? ...how?” Ukyo turned his head to try to catch the shape from a different angle and Daigo cracked a smile.
“See? That’s the main part, those are its arms and there’s even a flower on top,” Despite his description, the teen didn’t move from his place on the ground, instead tucking his arms behind his head. Ukyo shook his head in amusement and focused his blue gaze back on the sky.
While he was watching the sky, Daigo shifted so he could watch Ukyo’s profile. He didn’t know quite why, but he couldn’t tear his gaze away from his friend, with his hair fluttering in the wind and the sun on his skin, the peaceful sky as a backdrop.
“That’s weird…” Ukyo murmured, eyes narrowing at the clouds, but Daigo just kept watching, a slight smile tugging at his lips.
“Hey look at that,” Finally his friend’s abrupt pointing drew his gaze back to the sky and…what was that?
A plane swooped through the blue expanse, leaving a white trail of fluff behind it. It seemed to be…spelling?
Daigo sat up.
A perfect ‘D’ was suddenly written in the sky with a ‘+’ joining it. The plane dipped and now there was a ‘U’.
What…?
Realization slapped Daigo as the plane finished its art, a heart surrounding the letters. The initials. There was only one person this ridiculous and rich to pull this off. His face burned as he turned to Ukyo to explain it away, but Ukyo…
Ukyo was grinning.
His face was also a deep pink, but he turned to look at Daigo with that grin and all words died in his throat.
“I know this is your friend’s doing, but…they do say the clouds predict the future,” he commented, all calm and collected because of course Ukyo wouldn’t even freak out over this, while Daigo’s brain felt like soup. Well obviously his brief panic wasn’t necessary once his friend’s words processed.
“Yeah they do,” he murmured. All of a sudden, Ukyo placed his hand over Daigo’s, sending him a fond smile before turning back to the sky. Daigo grinned, letting the butterflies in his stomach melt, flooding him with warmth.
And although Daigo and Ukyo were the matchmakers, maybe…just perhaps…they were each other’s perfect match all along.
