Work Text:
Luka stood in the hallway, watching his wife from there and knowing what was going through her head. He knew that she was always lost in the what ifs, but they were happy. Truly happy. Marinette stood in the kitchen and stirred her coffee, lost in thought. She took a deep breath and licked her lips. She was happy with Luka, thankful for him, but it didn’t stop her from wondering what it would have been like to have married Adrien sometimes.
Luka placed his hands in his pockets and walked into the kitchen. He walked past her, lightly brushing against her arm on the way to grab a cup for his own coffee. He warmly smiled and walked up behind her, wrapping her in his arms to set his cup down onto the island. He kissed her cheek with a warm smile.
“I love you,” Luka whispered against her ear and watched a smile appear on her face.
“I love you too,” Marinette brought her cup to her lips and took a drink with a hum. “I never get tired of coffee.”
Luka laughed and grabbed his cup, walking over to fill his own from the press on the counter. “Me either.” He thought for a moment and walked over to sit down at the kitchen table, spinning his cup between his hands. “Marinette?”
“Hm?” Marinette peered up at him and licked the sweet coffee from her lips.
“I know you still think about him and that’s okay. You went through a lot when we were teenagers. A lot more than I thought or knew about.” Luka peered down and messed with his dark hair.
Marinette nodded and walked over to sit across from him. She took his hand and rubbed her thumb along his knuckles. “I miss him. I do. I wonder what it would be like to be with him, but I also am so, so, glad that I have you. I love you to pieces and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Yes, it was hard being a superhero and it was very hard to keep secrets from those I cared about, but don’t discredit yourself. You struggled with a lot and still do. My time being Ladybug is over, but you still are having to handle your parents and your sister. I help where I can, but- but I can’t even imagine what it’s been like for you and what it’s still like for you. I want to. God, do I want to. I try.”
“You do more than anyone ever has, my melody.” Luka intertwined her fingers with his and warmly smiled at her in the way that showed he was burying his pain again.
“I know that face, you’re burying something again.” Marinette brought his hand up to kiss the back of it.
“I’m hurting, you’re right. Mostly for my mom and sister. Worried.” Luka sighed and brought their hands back to the table. He brought his cup of coffee to his lips and took a sip from it. “I have always felt like I had to be two people. The dad and the brother.”
“I know,” Marinette sighed and brought her own drink to her lips. “And you’ve done an amazing job.”
“Yeah, but sometimes I too get the ‘what ifs’. What if I had done this or what if I had done that.” Luka sighed and set his cup down to grab his hair. “Ya know?”
“I do, everyone gets the ‘what ifs’,” Marinette sighed and reached over to caress his cheek. “But I also know… I wouldn’t change my life and where it has led.”
Luka smiled and nuzzled her palm, turning his face to kiss it. “Me neither.”
“So, let’s forget about all the bullshit we’ve been through ages ago and make better memories. Happy memories.” Marinette smiled at Luka.
Luka nodded and stood up, yanking her up and leaving her to ask, ‘what are you doing?’, repeatedly. He led her over to the record player and dropped the pin down to play a classic rock album. It was a slow ballad, one about love, and he took her into a slow dance around the kitchen. Marinette sighed and laid her head against his chest as he danced her back and forth. He pushed her away and spun her before spinning her back towards himself and catching her. She giggled and reached up on her toes to gently kiss him.
“Thank you for loving me and for listening to me all these years without judgement,” Marinette ran her hands around his neck and played with the hair at the nape of his neck.
“I should be thanking you for being so damn amazing,” Luka leaned down to capture her lips in a loving kiss. He pulled away to cradle her face gently in his hands, “I am one lucky man.”
Marinette peered down and softly laughed with a warm smile before looking up at him, “I am one lucky girl.”
“My ever amazing, beautiful, talented, Ma-Ma-Marinette,” Luka teased with a warm smile and watched her giggle and shove him in the chest. “Never gonna live that down.”
“I know, but… I wouldn’t change that.” Marinette reached up to kiss him again.
“Mmm… good,” Luka broke the kiss to softly laugh. “Me either.”
He held her close again to take her back into a slow dance, getting lost in the music that surrounded them.
