The first thing Amity thinks once she recovers her conscience is “who turned off the lights of her room?” and that her room was uncharacteristically small. She could barely move!
Also (and probably the most concerning part) she was struggling to breathe.
She moved around in the small space, groaning, and finally, cracked open whatever was holding her.
She gasped as air finally filled her lungs. This was sure a weird dream, but it was better than the dreams she was having about Luz and-
“AMITY?”
Oh no.
She looked at the source of the voice and there she was. Luz Noceda.
“Luz?!” the witch gasped as she took in the situation she was in and the place she was in, “Where are we?” She was sitting in some sort of bed made of leaves and some kind of fur (she was pretty she also saw a bone). The place was dark except for the light ball just beside Luz. This was definitely not a dream. All of her dreams were set in places she had already been in her life, but she had no clue where she was.
Then her memory started working again. She just wanted to get out of the manor and somehow ended up walking towards the house of her crush. Then she remembers hearing Hooty and it all went black.
“I… think Hooty brought me here?” she put her hand on her head, the cogs on her brain still processing the fact she had just been kidnapped by a house demon.
“Ah, well, this is our basement.” Luz explained, the light orb casting a beautiful light against her face that was adorned with a blush, “I am so sorry about this!” She offered Amity a hand to get up from whatever had been trapping her, “Hooty's been acting weird all day!”
Amity quickly let go of Luz’s hands and felt her face heat up as well. She took a step away from Luz.
“Yeah. House demons get like that after a couple of thousand years.” She said, not trusting herself to stand close to her crush, “It’s fine.” She repressed a nervous laughter and looked away from the other girl.
“Listen…” she felt her heart beat faster as she chose her next words carefully, “about what happened at my place…” She had been practicing this talk in the mirror for the past few days but she was far from ready. Especially since now, she wasn’t talking to a photo of Luz that she had glued to her mirror. This was the real Luz. The one that changed her life for the better, “I kinda-” the words got stuck on her throat as she looked at Luz, “If we could just forget about the whole thing maybe? I-”
“Hey!” Luz interrupted her, “All I care about is getting you out of our dirty, weird basement!” Her body was stiff as she walked closer to Amity.
As Luz took the step to stand right beside Amity, the floor under them made a loud noise and trembled, making both of them lose their balance and instinctively hold onto each other. Luz’s head was against her chest and Amity rested both of her arms and chin on top of Luz’s hair. Amity looked at Luz and Luz looked at Amity, her cheeks red. Amity was pretty sure the human wasn’t the only one flushed.
She was preparing to let go of Luz but then the floor under them disappeared, making them both fall as they clung and held onto each other during the fall, both screaming.
The end of what Amity would call the scariest playground slide ever was a bunch of pillows.
She pressed her hand against her forehead, trying to make the world around her stop spinning.
From her side, she heard Luz mumble something and immediately set the pillow between them on fire with one of her glyphs, making Amity scream from the scare.
Luz didn’t wait for her as she crawled off the pillows. Amity’s vision finally adjusted to the darkness and saw a bunch of heart-shaped pillows.
She had barely time to register it and the lights of the area lit up. One by one, revealing a tunnel flooded with water, decorated with dozens of hearts, flowers, and ribbons. A big swan was to the left of the tunnel. Music started playing and Amity carefully walked closer to Luz, wondering if this was some kind of human thing.
“What is this?” she asked and Luz made some kind of noise from the back of her throat that didn’t sound good.
Before she could do anything, the big swan looked at both of them and it had Hooty’s face, making Amity want to run away, but neither she nor Luz had a choice as the swan wrapped around both of them and put them in its back, revealing itself to be a boat with space just enough for the two of them.
“Hooty!” Luz screamed at the demon just as the boat started moving. Amity once again wished the world around her would stop spinning.
The boat crossed a couple of pink curtains, which were behind a heart-shaped gate with the words “Tunnel of Love” above it.
As they passed through the tunnel, Luz buried her face into her hands and Amity kept her knees close to her chest, confused by the whole thing.
Then she looked to her right and saw a banner being held by two giant rabbit plushies: “I think you’re smart, cool, and classy” it wrote.
Oh.
Amity took all the context into her mind. The hearts, the flowers, the “tunnel of love”, the romantic and cheesy music playing. Did Luz and Hooty plan this? It had to be. This was just the amount of cheesiness she would expect from Luz. And she loved it.
Feeling her face heat up, she pressed her hands against her hair, trying her best to look great for whatever Luz was planning to happen during the ride.
Right on cue, Luz mumbled something under her breath.
Trying her best to keep her blush at bay, Amity fidgeted with the ends of her dress.
“Did you, uh…” she looked at Luz, not being able to contain her smile, “Did you just say something?”
“Uh…” Luz looked at her for a split second and then at something behind her, her eyes widening, “no!” she jumped towards whatever was behind her, destroying what seemed to be a couple of statues of fire bees holding a heart.
Holding a part of the prop, Luz looked at Amity, an expression that could be described as some kind of mix between horror and faux confidence.
“That was uh… an invasive species.”
Then someone giggled, grasping Amity’s attention. She looked around and saw a bunch of robots that looked like statues of babies, some had Hooty’s face. They were all holding bows and they started shooting dozens of arrows at them. Luz started trying to deflect the arrows from them with her hands
“I'm so sorry, Amity!” Luz shouted, still holding onto the neck of the swan, “This is not supposed to happen.”
She stared as Luz went around the tunnel and put every single offensive glyph on every single romantic thing around them.
This is not supposed to happen.
The words echoed in Amity’s head and suddenly, all the happiness she was feeling vanished.
Of course Luz didn’t like her back. Amity was still lucky that Luz even wanted to be her friend.
The feeling she felt when Grom took her note and ripped it in two hit her again, now at full force. Before, she could imagine that Luz would never reject her. Now? It was real.
She put her hands on her knees, trying to hold back the tears, her eyes tightly closed.
She only opened them again once the boat stopped at the end of the tunnel.
Amity heard Luz get out of the water, struggling to breathe.
“This… was a nightmare.” The human said and if there was still any sort of hope in Amity’s body, it went away as the words that Luz had just said reached her ears.
“Yeah, it kinda was.” Amity replied, getting out of the ride, not trusting herself to look at Luz, “I'll… get out of your hair." She said, walking away from the ride, clutching her hands against her heart.
“Amity, wait!” Luz said as she stood up a few feet behind the witch, “This wasn't me! This was all Hooty's stupid idea.”
Amity had to repress a sob.
“Yeah. This was stupid.” She had to be strong. She had to be the little miss perfect, “I mean, us, dating?” She looked back towards Luz, with a forced smile and let out a sad chuckle, “That's stupid, right?” she wiped away the only tear that managed to escape, her fake smile vanishing.
Luz gasped and before they could talk further, Hooty appeared out of nowhere.
“NO! I DID IT AGAIN!” He screamed, crying full-on tears as he retreated his body from the tunnel. The house started shaking in unison with his screams.
“Oh my gosh, Hooty!” Luz screamed but it was too late. The shaking got worse and Amity was pretty sure the first thing that would collapse would be this tunnel.
She looked at Luz as some rubble started falling from the ceiling, almost hitting them.
“C’mon Amity, let’s get out of here!” she said, sprinting towards the staircase a few feet ahead of them.
Thye managed to escape just as the entire tunnel crumbled behind them.
“What’s going on?!” Amity asked as she closed the door to the basement behind her
“I don't know, but things always get weird when Hooty's upset!” Luz explained as the ground shook under them, both of them losing their balance.
Then, they both heard rumbling above them. But it was too late. A piece of the tower that was beside them came crashing down in their direction. Without a warning, Luz took Amity’s hand, pulling her down to the ground as they both braced for impact.
Amity closed her eyes, still holding Luz’s hand.
But the impact never came. What came was a sonic shout from the sky that amity recognized as the voice of the other demon that lived in the Owl House.
The voice wave destroyed the piece of the tower in dozens of pieces but not a single one hitting them.
Amity looked up at the sky as both of them were wrapped in a magical pink light. Amity had never seen something like this.
Then, she noticed Luz was staring at her.
Avoiding her eyes, Luz helped Amity get up from the ground.
They had no time to talk as Luz’s mentor came down from the sky, the demon she had adopted a few days ago in her arms.
“Are you two okay?” she asked.
Luz let go of Amity’s hand (wait, they were holding hands?) and turned to her mentor.
“Whoa! Not as okay as you!” Luz said as Amity stared at the older witch in front of her, who was in a completely new form. Different from the beastly one she saw at the petrification ceremony weeks ago, “Dang, girl! I have a few questions for later!”
Just then, Hooty appeared behind them, still sobbing and now disconnected from the house, which by what amity knew, wasn’t supposed to be possible.
“I failed you all! I FAILED YOU ALL!” he screamed into the sky, dragging his body around the ground.
“No, Hooty! You actually weirdly helped me! I'm like a Harpy Woman now!” Eda said.
“And I can explode things with my voice powers!” The little demon replied.
“But I still failed Luz!” the house demon screamed, still sobbing uncontrollably.
Amity could only stare at the bird tube with a confused expression. She had heard of house demons going through a rough middle-age crisis but this was far far off.
Amity could only wonder what he meant by failing Luz.
“Good luck, kid!” Eda said to Luz before she flew into the sky, grabbing Hooty mid-air and pulling him up with her.
“Amity-” Luz started but before she could say anything, the ground beneath them gave away as they fell into a hole that was the result of Eda pulling Hooty away.
Amity, for the third time in less than 10 minutes, lost her balance, falling to her knees.
“Oh, my gosh. Amity, are you okay?” Luz asked, her voice laced with concern as she walked closer to her.
“I’m all right.” She said and took once again Luz’s hand as she helped Amity up again. Amity retreated her hands, not wanting to make Luz even more uncomfortable after her feelings became clear in the tunnel.
“I was just-” Luz avoided Amity’s eyes again and Amity could feel a blush creeping up her cheeks for some reason. She mentally prepared herself for the awaited rejection, “I've been wanting to ask you something for a while…”
What?
“But I wanted to do it in the best way!”
What?
“And in the Tunnel of Love, I thought, “Amity's too cool for this”.” Her hands rested on her cheek as Luz finally looked in her eyes again, a goofy smile on her lips and an adorable blush on her cheeks. Amity recognized the shine in Luz’s eyes. It was the same shine that she had when Amity kissed her cheek.
I think you’re smart, cool, and classy.
The same and exact giddiness that filled Amity’s body when she read those words in the tunnel filled her once again as her cheeks flushed. She smiled, her hands clasped together in front of her accompanied by a smile.
“I'm not as cool as you think.” She said, bashfully.
“Okay. Everything is so crazy right now,” Luz took her hand off her cheek and gestured to everything around them, and I have no idea what my future holds, but” Luz stepped closer, both of her hands clasped together and a smile on her pretty face, “it would be so cool if you were in it. So, uh…” Luz blushed, avoiding Amity’s eyes.
As Luz took several deep breaths and tried to get whatever was stuck on her throat, Amity felt her brain fry for a moment.
Luz wanted to be with her. She wanted Amity Blight to be in her future. Luz Noceda wants Amity Blight in her future.
“DO YOU WANT TO GO OUT WITH ME?” Amity blurted before Luz, her face hotter than a cauldron in a Potions class. She immediately felt that weight that had been hanging on her shoulders fall.
Then, Amity covered her smile as she realized what she had just done.
“No! I was so ready!” Luz said, a smitten smile on her lips as she looked at her. Luz was looking at Amity Blight like this. And it was real. Not some kind of dream.
“I'm sorry, I'm sorry!” she apologized with what seemed to be the biggest smile of her life, waving her hand nervously in front of her, “You can say it.”
“Okay.” she took one final breath, “Amity Blight, do you wanna go out with me?”
“YES!” Amity had to refrain from crying. Her insides seemed to be complete and utter mush. Her bile sack of magic was so filled that she would be able to do some of the biggest spells ever!
“OKAY!” Luz shouted, not controlling her voice.
Amity stared at her, not sure of what to do next. Well, she knew what she wanted to do. She rubbed her hands, controlling the urge to finally hold hands with Luz. Not because they made an everlasting oath, not because they needed to save Willow, not because they needed to defeat Grom. But because they wanted it.
Luz must’ve gotten the clue as she awkwardly offered her hand to Amity.
Amity was more than glad to hold it. As she felt Luz’s thumb caress her other fingers and honestly, no dream could top this. The real feeling.
They both stared at their hands.
“Why is this still so scary?” Luz asked, her arm against her stomach.
“I don't know.” Amity said, her voice cracking in so many ways.
But… scary or not, Amity knew they could do this. Future Luz and future Amity could handle whatever came for them. They were together. And both Amity and Luz knew they weren’t letting of each other so soon.
