It all went by so fast.
One moment she was in the human realm, but she wasn’t there there. It was like watching a recording of her life. Seeing her mom, but her mom couldn’t see her.
Well, at first it seemed like she could. She was saying her name and talking in Spanish like they did in their everyday life. But then Luz heard a voice that sounded an awful lot like hers, even to the slight accent she picked up when talking in Spanish.
She wondered if this was a memory she repressed that happened many months ago. Months before Luz discovered that the demon realm existed. Months before she got stuck there.
And then she got pulled back, not being able to fully understand the situation.
The water of the lake she used to cross over filled her lungs as everything got black.

“…uz! Luz!” she heard a familiar voice call in the darkness, but her head was still spinning around as she had just been inside a washing machine, “C’mon! you gotta wake up! I can’t lose the love of my life like this!”
Then, it clicked. Amity.
“Amity loves me?” Luz said to herself before realization hit her, “AMITY LOVES ME! The prettiest girl in all the realms loves me!” she screamed, her voice echoing in the place. She couldn’t help but flap her hands excitedly.
“Okay. Calm down, Luz. Let’s get out of here first. Then you can tell Amity how you also love her.”
She tried focusing on her girlfriend’s voice, using it as a compass to find a way out in the darkness.
As Luz walked around, Amity’s calls became louder and louder, drowning the pain she felt at the back of her head.
Finally, when her voice was clear as it could be, the darkness faded and Luz opened her eyes with a gasp.
She was in that damn cave. The one with one of the lakes that reflected green trees and blue skies. She was laying on the shore and she could hear the water of the lake not that far from her.
But what grasped her attention was the fact that Amity was currently hovering over her, a shocked expression on her beautiful features.
“Luz!” Amity gasped, and Luz could tell immediately that she had been crying. Her cheek was wet, eyes were puffy, and her violet cotton candy hair was disheveled in all the direction possible. Her hand was currently on Luz’s cheek, her thumb caressing the side of her face.
“Hey, Ami” Luz said nonchalantly, the fact that she almost died forgotten as she stared lovingly at the most beautiful girl she ever saw.
“Titan, I was so worried about you!” Amity said, cupping both of Luz’s cheeks in her hands as another tear rolled down her own pale skin.
“Awn, you care about me!” Luz teased with a chuckle, slowly getting up and sitting on her knees to be on the same level as Amity, “I’m fine, Ami-”
Before she could finish her sentence, Amity leaned in and pressed her lips to Luz’s, initiating their first kiss.
They had been dating for two weeks now. Of course Luz thought about kissing Amity. There were times she would catch herself staring at the lips of her girlfriend, wondering if they were just as soft as they looked.
And Luz wasn’t dumb (at least not when it came to something she had read hundreds of times in fanfiction). She had caught amity staring at her lips a few times too. There had been some close calls, but they never went through with it.
Now? It was like Luz had been transported to those Young Adult romance novels she read under her blanket at midnight, with only the flashlight of her phone as a light source in the room.
Except those books didn’t tell how awkward it ended up being. But she had expected it. They were both inexperienced. Their noses didn’t fit like two halves of a whole. In fact, they bumped more than once.
Luz had barely registered what happened when Amity pulled back, her eyes fluttered open, revealing a determined look in that golden sea.
“Don’t you dare scare me like that ever again!” She said, her voice laced with worry as she still cupped both sides of Luz’s face. Finally, what she had just done seemed to sink in as her entire face blushed bright red, “Uh…”
The witch let go of Luz’s face and avoided eye contact, her hands gripping the hem of her dress like she always did when nervous.
“Wow,” Luz said, mesmerized by the boldness of the act, bringing the tips of her fingers to touch her own lips.
Finally, after some moments, she spoke up.
“That was the worst first kiss I’ve ever had,” Luz admitted with a chuckle and learning that Amity could somehow become even redder.
For a moment, Luz thought her girlfriend was mad at her. But then Amity grinned, the blushing not fading. She lightly shoved Luz’s shoulder with a chuckle of her own.
“Well, I know for a fact that this is also the only kiss you’ve ever had, making it the best first kiss you ever had!” Amity smirked, resting her forehead against Luz’s, both of her hands on her girlfriend’s waist.
Luz replied with some chuckles of her own, wrapping both hands around Amity’s neck and smiling at her, a blush on her cheeks.
They stayed like that for a few seconds, looking into each other’s eyes, smiles never ceasing. Then, Amity squeezed her waist and avoided Luz’s gaze, before clearing her throat.
“Do you want, maybe… do it again?” the witch offered a shy smile and Luz smiled widely.
“…yeah.” She tried sounding cool, but her voice sounded like a squeaky toy.
They both leaned in and this time, the kiss was slower. Their noses didn’t bump as much. Luz closed her eyes, basking into the feeling.
Luz was wrong earlier. Amity’s lips were way softer than they looked. And they tasted like strawberries, probably from Amity’s lip balm.
Finally, they pulled away, their foreheads still resting against each other, both girls sporting blushes on their faces.
“But I meant it, Luz.” Amity said after a couple of moments, “Don’t scare me like that ever again.”
“Don’t worry.” Luz replied, bringing her hand to push a few strands of Amity’s hair off her face “You’re not getting rid of the love of your life this easy.” Luz said with a chuckle and watched as Amity’s whole face turned red for the second time in less than five minutes.
“You… you heard that?”
“Yep.” Luz replied, dragging the ‘p’ at the end of the word. Amity pulled her forehead away and looked away from Luz, trying to hide her face in her hands.
“Titan, can we just… pretend that I didn’t say anything?”
Luz, on the other hand, wrapped both arms around Amity, resting her chin on her girlfriend’s shoulder.
“Why would I do that when I feel the same for you?” Luz replied, squeezing Amity a little harder.
“Luz, I- wait, what?” Amity looked at her, her mouth agape as she processed the words Luz had just said.
“You’re also the love of my life, Amity.” Luz nuzzled into the crook of Amity’s neck, a goofy smile on her lips.
“Did you hit your head or something?”
“Nope” Well, she did. But that wasn’t the point! “I am completely sane and in love with my awesome girlfriend!” Luz pulled away from Amity’s neck and pressed a kiss to Amity’s cheek. And then another. And then another.
Before she knew it, Amity was laughing at her girlfriend’s silliness.
As Amity’s laughter died down, she turned around and hugged Luz. They stayed like that in each other’s arms for what seemed an eternity, but they wouldn’t change that.
“I’m sorry our first date turned out like this, Ami.” Luz finally said it, thinking about how their day had started and how things had changed just in a couple of hours.
“What?” Amity pulled away from the hug, “Luz, I haven’t even thought about our date for the last 2 hours!” she brought her hand to Luz’s face, brushing with her thumb a little bruise there, “All I wanted was to see you out of that cursed lake!”
“Awn! You like me!” Luz smiled, putting her hand over’s Amity.
“Luz, we just confessed our love to each other. Of course I like you!” Amity rolled her eyes affectionately
“Yeah I know but still. It’s cute.” Luz leaned in and pecked Amity’s lips for half a second. Amity smiled as she got up from the ground, patting her knees to get the dirt out of her leggings.
“Let’s get you home. Eda and King must be so worried about you.” Amity offered her a hand, pulling Luz to her feet. Except they didn’t let go of each other’s hands as they walked away from the lake.
“And if it makes you feel better,” Amity started, once the night sky was above them, “I wouldn’t be mad if we called this” she looked back to the cave, “our first date.”
“Really?!” Luz beamed enthusiastically.
“Mmhm.” Amity hummed in agreement, a light blush on her cheeks.
“Gosh, I need to take a picture then!” Luz reached her free hand to one of the pockets of her shorts, but found no phone in there, “Wait, where’s my phone?!”
“Do you think you ended up dropping it in the lake?”
“Maybe. Ugh, I can’t believe this! All of my stuff…” Luz tried to control her tears. She had just lost the only way to contact her mamá. All of the pictures and videos she took during her stay in the boiling isles, gone.
“Hey, it’s alright.” Amity let go of Luz’s hand and rubbed circles into her back, “If you want, I can help you pick up a scroll to buy this weekend!”
“Wait, really?”
“Yeah! Make it our second date!” The witch smiled, kissing Luz on her cheek, “Hopefully it will be less stressful. Less pulling out of a magic lake.”
“Yeah, hopefully.”
Luz offered her hand to Amity. They held hands again under the starry sky as they walked back to The Owl House. To their home away from home.

Camila had just arrived home from work when her phone started going off.
She unlocked it, seeing that Luz had sent her a bunch of pictures and videos.
“Mija? I thought you had lost your phone at the campamento!” She called into the house as she opened a video of Luz who seemed to be in some kind of bedroom, “What is this video you just sent me?”
She pressed play, a little smile on her tired face.
“Holá mamá! You haven’t heard from me in a while! It’s been a week and a half since that petrification ceremony!”
Camila’s eyes widened. What was she talking about? What petrification ceremony?
She heard steps coming from the direction of Luz’s room.
“¿Qué? Luz? ¿Qué significa esto?” she turned to face her daughter, who was hidden in the shadows of the house.
“It’s alright, mamá.” She replied, "Todo estará bien."
