Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Hope you guys enjoy this story, it's my first MacGyver/Macriley (multi-chapter) fic.

Riley sat in the war room as Matty advised the team on their next mission. She informed them of the importance of the job and what would happen if they didn’t succeed on their assignment, before she stepped aside to let Riley take the lead. Riley pulled up the blueprint of the museum they were planning on stealing the artifact from. “Tonight, is the only night we’re going to be able to get the stone.” Riley directed them. “They’re having an A-list party and most of the security we’ll be by the entrance with the celebrities but that only gives us thirty-minute window.”

The team nodded. “We got this.” The newest recruit announced.

“I know you do.” Riley assured with a wink. “Now go get ready you guys leave an hour.” She commanded following behind them.

“Riley.” Matty called. “Can you stay back for a second?”

She nodded closing the door behind her. “What’s up?”

“You should sit down.” Matty recommended sitting on the table in front of her. “So, I have some news.”

“Matty, I know you’ve been trying to get me ready to lead the team, but don’t you think it’s a little too soon.” She stated in worriment.

“I’m not going anywhere, at least not yet.” She chuckled caressing her cheek. “But you’re more than ready.”
Riley gave Matty a hesitant smile. “Okay, what did you want to tell me?”
“It’s Mac.” Riley’s mouth immediately dropped afraid of what Matty might possibly tell her. They haven’t talked about Mac for a while now, it was easier on all of them not to talk about him since they haven’t been able to locate him in years. Not knowing if he was dead or alive was taking a toll on all of them especially Riley. “He’s on his way back and should be here soon.” She informed her taking ahold of her hand. “I know this may come as a shock to you.” She expressed. “But I just found out this morning, and I don’t know exactly what went on, but I wanted you to hear it from me.”

Instant tears fell from her eyes when she heard the news. “He’s alive.” She exhaled, she’s always had faith that he was still alive, but he’d just been gone for so long that her faith sometimes faltered. But she knew that if she even gave herself a moment too accept the possibility of never seeing Mac again, she’d breakdown. So, she kept busy, with work and her son. “Matty, he’s alive, he’s coming home?” She repeated “Does he know?”

Matty shook her head. “It’s your story to tell.”

“I’m not ready.” She whispered. “He doesn’t know, he’s just a baby. He’s, my baby.”

“I know.” Matty assured pulling her in for a hug.

“I should go, I have to check on Jack.” Riley said rushing out the room, she ran towards the parking lot trying her best to control her breathing, in hopes she wouldn’t overwhelm herself. Her efforts were failing her as tears streamed down her face, she grabbed her keys from her bag and quickly sped out the parking lot. The whole drive home she was inconsolable, no matter how hard she tried tears continued to stream down her face. She’s never been so relieved and enraged at the same time. She wasn’t ready to see him, she wasn’t ready to tell him. She didn’t know how to tell him. She grabbed a few napkins from the console and quickly wiped her face hoping her son wouldn’t notice her distress. “Everything is going to be alright.” She breathed before she got out the car only to find Mac standing in the middle of her driveway.

“Hey Riles.” Mac greeted emotionally. “I’ve missed you so much.”

“Mac.” She gasped when she felt his arms around her, she quickly succumbed into his embrace and closed her eyes. She missed it, she missed him. But her life has changed, and she knew she couldn’t let herself get wrapped up. She gave herself a moment to have him again before letting go. “I’m sorry but I can’t do this right now.” She said pulling away and heading towards her home.

“Riles. Riles. Riley, please.” He intreated chasing after her. “Riles.” He called again his voice cracking which made her stop in her tracks and turn to face him. They just stared at each other for a moment before he pulled her into his embrace again letting her cry on his shoulder as she squeezed him tightly. “I’m so sorry, I love you so much.” He whispered.

“No.” She yelled pushing him away. “You don’t get to come back after three years and tell me you love me.” She wiped her tears away and grimaced. “You left me.” She yelled. “You knew how I felt about you, how much I wanted us to work.” She argued.

“I-” He drew his lips into a thin line and sighed. “It was fucking stupid of me, but I got caught up with this mission if I told you that all I wanted was to spend the rest of my life with you, you would have come I couldn’t risk the possibility of losing you.” He expressed inching closer.

She put her hands up in protest as she stepped back. “Our lives were at risk all the time.” She reminded him. “So, you’re telling me you fell off-the-grid for my benefit?” She disputed. “Because trust me there were no benefits, I went through hell.” She growled her face contorting in anger.

“There’s a lot you don’t know-” Mac started.

“Mommy.” A toddler mumbled wrapping his tiny body around Riley’s leg which caused her to freeze.

“Hey Jack, baby you have to go with grandma I’ll be there soon.” She replied completely changing her tone. But he just knowingly stared at the man standing in front of him. She quickly picked him up wrapping her arms around him protectively, like she was refusing to let the world around him penetrate the safety net she has created. “Mom?” Riley called making her way back inside the screen door slamming shut.

Mac has always been pretty good at never letting his emotions get the best of him, he always tried his best to stay calm even in the most intense situations. But when he saw those identical blue eyes stare back at him something came over him. “Were you ever planning on telling me?” Mac yelled running up the porch after them. But Riley was already by the door, closing the wooden door behind her. Tears welled around his eyes as he lost sight of his son. “God Riley, we have a son?” He stated breathlessly. “He’s mine.” He said possessively knowing without a doubt that child was his. “He’s my son, please just let me hold him.” He begged as the tears finally escaped him.

Seeing the tears in his eyes caused her to have the same reaction. “I don’t trust you, Mac.” She spoke lowly as her gaze fell to the ground. “Not anymore.”

“Riles, please don’t do this.” He pleaded. “He’s my baby, I’m his father.” He said yearningly.

“How can I trust you won’t leave him like you left me?” She questioned wiping her tears. “He doesn’t deserve that.”

“Never- I- Could-” He stuttered. “I’ll do anything.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t.” She uttered.

He shook his head in disappointment he knew there was no way to get through to her. “I never intended on hurting you Riles.”

“Even if it wasn’t your intention, I was hurt.” She told him before she headed back inside.

“My baby girl.” Her mom whispered pulling Riley into her embrace. “It’s going to be okay.” She announced rubbing her scalp, something she always done ever since Riley was a child to comfort her.

“I don’t know what to do.” She hiccupped. “I need to protect Jack; I don’t want him to wonder when he’s going to see his dad again.” She expressed. “I don’t ever want him to feel the way I have.”

“I know baby girl.” Diane sighed wishing she was able to fix everything.

After his reunion with Riley, he sped his way back to the Phoenix barging into the lab where Matty and Bozer were having a meeting. “You knew, I had a son.” He shouted in frustration. “Why did no one tell me?”

“Mac, please relax.” Bozer advised.

“You decided to go off the grid Mac, what did you want us to do?” Matty retorted worried about his current emotional state.

“I have a son.” He choked out before he collapsed on the floor in defeat.

“Mac man, I’m sorry you found out like this.” Bozer expressed kneeling down next to him. “What happened?”

“I went to see her, and she was so angry with me.” He stated bowing his head down. “And I figured it was from me being gone for so long, but then Jack came out and her whole demeanor changed. I don’t think she was planning to tell me. He was the one who came out to the porch. He looked right at me, and I just stood there.” He stated sorrowfully. “She took him away so quickly; she didn’t even let me meet him.”

“Just give Riley some time.” Matty advised. “It’s a lot for her.”

“I know.” He agreed in frustration running his fingers through his hair. “I wish she’d just let me explain, I just want to know my son.” He yearned keeping his son on the forefront of his mind.

“I know man.” Bozer comforted rubbing Mac’s shoulder. “And you will, I’m sure you will.”

“He’s beautiful.” Mac said joyfully just knowing he had a son made him happy. “He looks just like her, but his hair is so blonde and wavy, and his eyes are so curious.”

“He’s a lot like you.” Bozer told him taking out his phone and showing him a video. “He loves building things, he’s obsessed with robots.” Bozer knew it wasn’t exactly his place to tell Mac about Jack, but he hated seeing his best friend hurt.

Tears streamed down his face as he watched his son and the love of his life interact together. “Look at that smile, he’s so happy I know Riley is the best mom.” He desired to have that same relationship with his son, he knew Riley wasn’t keeping Jack from him to be spiteful, but he desired for things to be a lot different.

“She is, it was like they were made perfect for each other.” Matty added. “And he’s the sweetest, he makes everyone fall in love with him.

Hearing that brought a smile to Mac’s face. “I bet.” He blustered. “I just want to be a part of his life. I barely knew my dad, I don’t want us to have a relationship like that.”

“Blondie.” Matty buzzed wiping away his tears. “I have no doubt Riley will let you be in his life; you just need to have a little patience.” She caressed his cheek and grinned. “And remember to have a little patience with yourself, you tend to get in your head a lot.” She winked.

“Agreed.” Bozer teased shoving Mac’s shoulder causing him to pout. “Jack makes that same face.” Bozer told him with a chuckle.

Matty nodded in agreement before suggesting for Mac to head home. “You should get some rest, just take some time for yourself, you’re going through a lot.” She paused. “You’ve gone through a lot.” She repeated.

He frowned. “Yeah, I guess.” He stated sluggishly slowly getting up from the floor. “It’s been a really long day.”

The second Mac got home he took a warm shower and headed straight to bed. But ended up just tossing and turning just thinking about his current situation, and all he could have done to avoid going on the mission in the first place. Right when he was finally falling asleep, he heard loud banging on the door. Checking his security system, he saw that it was Desi on his front porch.

“Hey Des.” Mac greeted stepping aside to let her in.

“You asshole.” She yelled punching him in the shoulder.

“Ow.” He complained.

“Never do that again.” She demanded hugging him tightly. “I thought you died, then I thought to went rogue, you always talked about quitting so I thought you took this mission as your way out.” She rambled as she paced back and forth.

“Welcome. It’s so nice to see you. I’ve missed you too.” Mac mumbled sarcastically as Desi made her way to the couch.

“I’m glad you’re okay.” She said tapping her shoulder against his once he sat on the couch. “Do you want to talk about it?”
He shook his head. “No, not really.” He sighed. “That mission made me lose a lot.” He rested his back against the couch burying his face in his hands. “I can’t believe I have a son, and Riley doesn’t want me around him.”

“Listen Mac, Riley has had a rough couple of years and if it wasn’t for Jack, I don’t think she would have pulled through.” She informed him. “She was heartbroken when you left.”

“I know, but-”

“But nothing, she went through it alone. She wanted you to be there.” She expressed trying her best to explain Riley’s side of the story.

“I’m here now, why is she pushing me away?” Mac questioned.

She shrugged longing to give him the answer. “Maybe she just needs time to process everything, she hasn’t seen or talked to you in years and had your baby while you were gone on a mission not knowing if she’d ever see you again.”

“It wasn’t my choice.” He defended passionately, he hated that he hurt Riley, but he’d rather have her angry with him then put her in unsafe position. “It became so dangerous.” He confessed. “I couldn’t just leave, that would have put everyone in danger.”

“And you couldn’t tell us before you went off the grid, not a warning, morse code, or through your macventions?” Desi suggested.

“I couldn’t, these guys were way too smart they watched my every move.” He clarified.

“I get that, but I think Riley would have figured a way to get you out, she always does. We all would have had your back.” Desi reminded him.

“Desi, I really don’t want to talk about this anymore.” He shouted standing up from the couch.

Desi sat on the couch quietly for a couple minutes before she spoke again. “We had this complicated relationship; I never knew what you were thinking or what you wanted.” She exhaled. “But you and Riley.” She paused. “Were seamless, and communicated so easily, and I’d admit when were together it made me a bit jealous, but it made me realize you two were the ones who were meant to be together. It was always supposed to be you two.” She confessed for the first time. “You just need to work on getting to your communication back to where it was.”

“How?” He questioned sitting back next to her.

“Time.” She answered. “She gave up so much, and it took her some time to figure things out without you, now give her some time to figure how to do it with you.” She advised hoping to ease his mind a bit.

“I can’t imagine how hard it must have been on her.” He stated empathetically. “But I have a right to know my son, she said she doesn’t trust me anymore. She thinks I’d leave him. I could never do that.”

“And I’m sure she’ll eventually figure that out, but just like it’s hard on you to process everything, it just as hard on her.” She enlightened patting Mac on his thigh.

“When did you did you become so sensitive and wise?” Mac asked with a grin.

“Blame your son, he’s got me wrapped around his little finger.” She complained. “He’s lucky he’s cute.” She stated crossing her arms across her chest.

“I’m glad he’s warmed you up a bit.” He chuckled.

“Yeah well, must be hereditary or something, he definitely got it from Riley.” She joked.

“I’m sure, he did.” He chortled appreciating Desi’s commitment in helping him understand Riley’s apprehension. “Thank you for being here.”

“Anytime.” She pledged.

Hope you guys liked it, love to know what you all think! Thanks for reading! 😊

Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Chapter Text

Hi! I loved reading all your comments from the last chapter, I hope you enjoy this chapter just as much.

With everything that happened in the past twenty-four hours, Riley was emotionally exhausted. She was thankful for her mom; she knew the only reason she was able to sleep in was because of her. She checked the camera’s and found them together in the kitchen eating breakfast, she loved their relationship and couldn’t imagine raising her son without her mother around. She rolled out of bed and headed straight to the shower in hopes she could wash away her fatigue.

“Good morning mom.” Riley said kissing her mom on the cheek. “Thank you for taking Jack for me this morning.”

“I’ll always be here for you baby girl.” She promised kissing her temple. “Why don’t you stay home today huh?” Diane suggested brushing her wet curls away from her face.

“I can’t, I have mission today.” Since having Jack, Riley has cut back on going on missions, it was important to her to spend as much time with Jack as she could. Thanks to Matty, she’s only scheduled to go on missions that don’t take more than a day. “I should be back before bedtime.”  She told her mom leaning into her embrace.

“Okay.” Diane buzzed eyeing her daughter in worriment.

“I’m going to have to face him eventually.” She admitted with a shrug. “Might as well, get everything over with now.”

“And by everything you mean?” Diane questioned.

“Can we talk about this later.” Riley stated lowly looking back her son who was eating his food contently. “He already saw more than I wanted him to see.”

“Okay then, we’ll talk when you come back.” Diane bowed in agreement. Diane thought Riley was a wonderful mother and she couldn’t be prouder of who’s she become, even with the career she has and raising her son alone she’s never faltered. Which also worried her, Riley barley accepted help when it came to Jack and now, she has the opportunity to raise her son the way she’s always wanted, and refuses. Diane knew it wasn’t for self-interest, Riley feels she is protecting her son by keeping his father away, and even though she didn’t agree she respected her daughter’s decision. All Diane could do was give her some advice and let her make her own choices.

“Good morning handsome.” Riley beamed kissing her son’s forehead.

“Grandma make waffles.” He stated enthusiastically. “Waffles are good mommy.” He took a piece from his plate and offered it to her.

“Yummy.” Riley hummed taking a bite. “Mommy’s taking an apple to eat.” She told him as she grabbed an apple from the counter and poured coffee in her thermal.  “Have fun with grandma today, I’ll see you after work. I love you.”

“Good day work mommy.”

She chuckled. “Thank you, baby. I’ll see you later mom.”

If Riley was being honest with herself, she would have loved to take her mom’s advice of staying home in bed. But she didn’t want anyone to think she was trying to avoid Mac, because she wasn’t. She just didn’t know what to say to him, without hurting him. No matter their history Mac was her friend first and she still cared for him, but her son was her main priority. She wanted to make sure he was always safe, physically and emotionally.

“Morning.” Riley buzzed taking a seat in the war room for preparation on their next mission. She felt Mac’s eyes on her with every move she made, every little shift his gaze fell on her, his presence was distracting and by the time their meeting was over, she hardly knew what her task was.

“Remember, the printer is in one of the penthouse suites on the southside of the hotel.” Matty told them team. “You guys are up in ten.”

“Any advice on how to deal with Bozer has a boyfriend?” Desi joked as she walked out the room with Leanna.

“Hey, I’m a great partner.” Bozer defended following behind them.

Riley turned in her tracks accidently bumping into Mac.

They both spoke in unison.

“We should talk?” “Can we talk?”

“Listen Riles.” His gaze was on her before it fell to the ground. “I know I hurt you, but if you’d let me explain-”

“What is there to explain Mac? You were my partner; partners don’t just leave each other alone without saying a word.”

The way she was looking at him broke his heart, he’s seen Riley hurt before but never like this. “I-”

“You were my best friend before anything, and I trusted you with every part of me.” She expressed earnestly. “I never questioned why you did anything I always had your back. We communicated so well.” She paused. “At least I thought we did.”

“When I left for the mission, I thought I’d only be gone for a few weeks, and then things just started becoming this giant mess and I didn’t want you involved.” He combed his hands through his hair in frustration, before he started pacing around the room. Mac didn’t want her to think he was lashing out, or angry with her, because he wasn’t. He just wanted to speak his mind clearly and openly, without overwhelming her or himself. Adjusting back to his life that has changed drastically, has been tough on him. Losing the past three years of his life, losing Riley, and finding out he had a son he can’t have a relationship with, after everything he’s been through was way too much for him to handle. And as much as he wanted everything to be how he left it; he knew it was impossible especially after he made his decision to go rouge. “I wanted to tell you I did, I thought about calling you every day, but I knew if I told you, you’d come. You mean everything to me, Riley you’re my world, and it became so dangerous.” He uttered. “I lost my dad, my aunt, Jack.” He breathed taking ahold of her face. “I couldn’t imagine losing you, what if you went with me and you would have found out you were pregnant in the middle of the mission what would have happened?” He probed disgusted with the possible outcome. “I couldn’t protect you.” He pleaded wiping her tears.

Her hands wrapped around his wrist. “You could have told me.” She muttered gazing up at him. “I know how to protect myself.”

“I know you do. But this mission was unlike anything we’ve ever been on.” He confessed as he gently rubbed his thumb against her cheek. “And I know you’re trying to protect Jack but Riles he’s my son and I want to have a relationship with him.”

She closed her eyes for a moment trying her best to get her thoughts together before she spoke again. “He’s, my baby.” She whispered. “What am I supposed to say to him Mac?” She said slowly pulling away from his embrace. “This is your daddy you’ve never met because he’s been away on a dangerous mission, and we don’t know when he’s going to leave again because we have crazy careers.”

“Honey, we can figure it out.” He implored.

“I barley go on missions anymore, because I don’t want him to be parentless. We lost you, he doesn’t need to lose me too.” She expressed.

“But you have me.” He cried. “I’m right here.”

“For how long Mac? You know you can never get away from these missions no matter how hard you try.”

“I can-”

“It’s been just Jack and I for so long.” She whispered. “This job is your life, it’s always been.” She expressed. “How am I going to explain to him there’s a possibility he won’t see you for weeks or even ever again.”

He gazed into eyes and sighed. “That’s not true you guys mean everything to me, I’d do anything you want. What do I need to do?”

She shook her head. “I can’t tell you what to do, it’s your choice.”

“Hey guys.” Desi called knocking on the door before entering. “We’re on our way out.”

“We’ll be there in a second.” Riley told her.

He grabbed her by the wrist when she turned to leave. “Letting me be a part of his life would be the most important thing, before any mission, before any job, before anyone.” He locked eyes with her before he spoke again. “He’s my first priority Riley, I swear he is.”

“We should go.” She murmured gently pulling away her wrist from his hand.

Their mission was in Vegas, so they’re plane ride was only an hour long but with the silence in the room, only made it feel longer than it was. “We’re so happy to have you back Mac.” Bozer commented breaking the silence.

Leanna and Desi nodded and agreement while Riley stared out the window in reserve. “We’ve really missed you.” Leanna told him.

“We all did.” Bozer mentioned looking over at Riley, she remained stoic keeping her sight on the clouds.

He nodded shyly. “I’m glad to be back, I’ve missed all of you too.”

“We should get dress; we’re going to start descending soon.” Desi warned them grabbing their clothes from the closet. “Hey Ri, this one is yours.” She told her breaking Riley out of her focus.

“Thanks.” She hummed she stared at the dress for a second before she realized the reasoning behind why Desi gave her the dress. “We’re almost there?”

“We have ten minutes before we descend.” She answered offering her hand to help her up.

The quickly got dressed and got back to their seats as the plane started to descend.

“Bozer did you have to pick the most obnoxious ring from the jewelry box.” Desi complained sliding the large diamond on her ring finger.

“Leanna, the ring isn’t obnoxious right?” Bozer questioned looking at his girlfriend.

Desi posed her hand towards Leanna and pouted.

“I mean it is pretty bad.” Leanna admitted looking from Desi’s hand to Bozer remorsefully.

“I picked that ring with you in mind.” He grumbled disappointed that she didn’t like his choice in jewelry.

“Well now you know, what not to get her.” Desi teased pulling off her seatbelt.

“You know what, now I’m starting to understand how Mac felt.” Bozer half joked. “Well, it’s a good thing I’m married to the pilot and not you, or Mac.” Desi countered opening the door to the cockpit and kissing her husband goodbye.

“Take care of my wife.” He commanded eyeing Bozer.

“Oh please, you and I both know Desi doesn’t need anyone to take care of her.” Bozer told David as he got off the flight.

“You’re right. Hey babe, make sure you take care of Bozer.” He chuckled.

“Haha, you guys are so funny.” Bozer complained making faces at them. “Did I mentioned how much I hate the newlywed phase, you guys got married two weeks ago get over it.”

Desi rolled her eyes linking her arm in his. “Well now we’re the newlyweds so shut up.”

“Did I mention how much I missed you guys?” Mac chuckled following behind them.

Each of them had a job Bozer and Desi, were the distraction, while Leanna grabbed the case of the counterfeit money the casino already had stashed in the office. Mac was in charge of fixing the slot machines that were rigged with a special algorithm the owners used to let customers easily win. They traded their real money for well-made counterfeit money, that can’t be noticed by the naked eye. If he was able to engineer the machines to stop working and spit back their money, it would cause a long enough of a distraction for Riley to get up to the penthouse floor and get close enough to the printer to wirelessly disengage the chip.

“There’s only one guard in front of the penthouse suite.” She whispered into her com. “I got this.” She sauntered towards the guard giving him a flirtatious smile. “Do you mind, the lighting and the views are so much better up here can you take a picture of me?” She leaned in close pulling his gun from his holster knocking him out with it. She grabbed her laptop from her bag in hopes she was close enough to the printer to shut it down. It took her a few minutes, but she was able to hack into the printer and infect it with a virus to completely shut it down.  “On my way down now.” She told them heading towards the elevator.

The guards must have gotten a signal that the printer had shut down because the second Riley informed them it was down, they all rushed out the casino towards the hotel. Mac tracked a few feet behind yearning Riley made it down in time. He spotted her making her way towards the casino with a guard not too far behind her. He snuck behind one of the corner walls and grabbed her inspecting the halls to see if a guard was coming their way. “I think they saw you.”

“Shit.” She cursed scanning the floor.

“You’ve been in your head, since you left, and I know it’s my fault.” He whispered frantically. “Just forget everything I said, okay. You need to make it home safe.” He implored taking ahold of her face. “I’m sorry okay, just do what you need to do to make sure you get home to our son tonight.” He told her slipping out from behind the wall and knocking into one of the guards.

“Hey, would you happen to know where the bathroom is?” He asked trying his best to quickly come up with a plan. “Woah. Woah. Woah.” Mac juddered raising his hands up in surrender when the man pulled out his gun. “I was just trying to get to the bathroom.” He repeated.

“What’s taking so long?” Riley complained clumsily wrapping her arms around Mac. “I thought you were looking for a room, so we could have a little fun.” She smirked tangling her hands in his hair. “Who is this?” She stated drunkenly glaring at the guard. “Roleplaying? Really Mark? I’ve already told you, I’m not into threesomes.” She stated shoving him. “Why don’t you ever listen to me?” She argued hoping she was convincing enough to be let go she knew the other guards weren’t far behind and if they tried to fight, they’d get caught, so she improvised. “You’re such an ass.”

“Regina, wait I’m sorry.” He called running after her. “I do listen to you.”

“There’s an emergency exits over here.” She murmured leading the way.

“Thank you, but I could have figured it out.” He grumbled following behind her.

“Yeah well, we’re out now so it doesn’t even matter.” She disputed with a groan.

“You’ve could have gotten hurt.” He argued as they walked through the emergency exit. “Don’t ever risk your life for me.” He bellowed. “You need to make it home to Jack. That’s the most important thing.”

“Don’t you think I know that.” She shouted back. “I think about it all the time. I barley go on missions anymore but when I do, all I think about is assuring I make it home to him.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

“Well Mac, when you have a criminal record there aren’t many job options out there for you.”

“Oh please, you and I both know you can easily make it go away with a click of your keyboard.”

“And if I get caught? Then what happens I go back to prison and raise my son from a cell?” She stated.

“I can cover the expenses, whatever you need. You can stay with Jack.”

“No.” She thundered turning to face him. “I love my job, risks and all. I know how to keep myself safe, I’ve been doing it for years now.” She said crossing her arms over her chest.

He sighed drawing his lips into a thin line. “Riley.”

“Let’s just go Mac.” She told him.

Desi, Leanna and Bozer tried to lighten up the mood playing a game of Uno, both Mac and Riley refused to play and kept their distance from each other on the ride back home. Mac just sat there thinking of all the things he could have said to her instead of telling her how to raise their son. He wanted to apologize but he wanted their conversation to be in private. So, when Riley got up to go to the dressing room, he followed behind her taking it as his opportunity.

“Please.” She pleaded burying her face in her hands and breaking down. “I don’t want to argue with you, I’m tired of arguing and fighting.” She vented sincerely. “I spent three years hoping I’d see you again, praying you were alive and all we’ve done is argue for the past twenty-four hours.”

“I’m sorry.” He said pulling her into his arms and kissing the top of her head. “I know it hasn’t been easy, and this isn’t how I wanted it to be either.” He expressed pulling her closer. “You mean everything to me, and I can’t imagine my life without you or our son.”

“Then please just trust me.” She murmured lowly against his chest. “I’m not trying to hurt you; I would never want to do that.” She promised. “He’s already so much like you, he’s so smart and caring and even at the age of two an overthinker.” She gave him a small smile. “He loves so deeply, and I don’t want him to ever think that when you leave again it was because of something he did.”

“I would never let him think that.” He swore shaking his head. “But I trust you.” He stated sadden. “Do whatever you feel like you need to do for him. But just know I’m here, I always will be.”

“I’m sorry, I’m so late we got stuck in the hotel and-” She paused looking at the time. “Is he asleep already?”

“He was really tired, I tried to keep him awake.” Diane told her.

“It’s okay.” Riley sighed. “I’ll make sure it won’t happen again.”

“Honey, it happens to every parent. Don’t feel guilty.” She advised taking ahold of her chin. “You can’t be there twenty-four seven even if you tried.”

“I guess.” She shrugged. “It’s just hard, I want to make sure he knows I’m there for him.”

“I know he does, he knows we all are.” Diane assured. “He asked about him, you know.” She stated through a mumble.

“About who?” Riley questioned though she knew the answer.

Diane sighed. “You know exactly who. He called him, the man outside and asked why he was so sad. He was worried about him.”

“Great, I didn’t want him to see that.” She moaned slumping down on the kitchen stool. “I almost got caught today by the guards, and Mac freaked out and said I always need to make it home to Jack, and to never worry about him when we’re on missions.”

“Can you blame him?” Diane defended. “Riley, baby girl I know you’re trying to keep Jack safe but in the long-run you’re just hurting him by not letting him get to know his father. Mac is a good man and I have no doubt he’d be a great father.”

“How am I supposed to tell Jack?” She questioned.

“Just introduce them to each other.” Diane counseled. “Maybe just have him come around once in a while, let them get to know each other. Everything will eventually fall into place.” Diane guaranteed taking her daughter’s hand. She knew her past with Elwood and having Jack in and out of her life effected Riley and was partly the reasoning why she was keeping Mac from Jack. “Look how your relationship with your dad has turned out, and the great relationship you had with Jack. Don’t you think Mac and Jack deserve that chance?”

Riley knew her mom was right, as much as she wanted to shelter Jack from ever being hurt. But it would hurt him more not being able to see his father. “Okay, I’ll give him a chance, but just this once.” She swore.

Do you think Riley is going to regret her decision? Can't wait to see what you guys think, thanks for reading!

Chapter 3: Chapter 3

Chapter Text

Mac has been back at the Phoenix for about a month now, and ever since their mission in Vegas, he’s kept his distance. Riley stayed back most missions anyway so most of their interactions were in the war room but even then, it was minimal. It was eating away at him that he couldn’t see his son, and he tried his best to keep busy, and respect Riley’s parenting but Jack was all he constantly thought about. Mac even vividly dreamt about him; it was a recurring nightmare he’s had almost every night since he’s been back. It starts off perfect, he, Riley, and Jack are all cuddled on the couch together watching a movie and then suddenly it shifts. He’s in bed asleep next to Riley in a giant glass house, and he hears Jack call for him and when he goes to check his room Jack’s bed is empty. When he goes to look for him the giant glass house becomes a glass maze, and he sees Riley and Jack through the panels, but he has no way to get to them as he runs through the maze they seem to get further and further. When he finally makes his way to them the entrance is blocked by men that kept him from making his way home for the past couple of years. His nightmare always ended there, never knowing if he made it to them, never knowing if they were safe. Everything staying in the unknown. He woke up most mornings drenched in sweat and that morning was no different as he turned off his alarm to get ready for work. When he came out the shower and went to check his phone for the time, he was met with some text from Riley.

Morning Mac, it’s Riley.

Hey Riles, what’s up?

Can we talk when you get to work?

Sure, I’ll be there in 10.

He quickly got dressed and grabbed his keys, making it to the Phoenix exactly in ten minutes.

Hey, I’m here where should we meet?

I have an office 3rd floor next to the lab.

He gently knocked on the door waiting to be invited in, when he entered his eyes automatically fell to the small corner filled with books, toys and a small couch with the name Jack embroidered on it. “This is nice.” He commented trying to make small talk.

“Thanks.” She said shortly kind of wanting to cut to the chase. “So, I want you to meet Jack.” She blurted out.

“Seriously?” He questioned.

“Yes, I’ve been thinking about this for a while now and he deserves to meet you and have a relationship with you. As he gets older, he’s going to ask questions and I think it’s important he gets to know you now. Instead growing up in the oblivion and wondering about half of who he is and what his father is like.” She rambled looking towards the floor. “What do think?” She said breathlessly.

“Okay.” He grinned. “Yes. Where? When?” He asked excitedly.

“Tomorrow night.” She sighed taking a seat on top of her desk. “My mom is having a barbecue, and I think it would be easier for him to meet you while he’s around other people, it may be less intimidating.”

“Whatever you need to do.” He agreed.

“Mac, please don’t make me regret this.” She breathed closing her eyes. “Don’t you dare put any mission before our son.”

He rested his hands on her shoulders as she opened her eyes. “This is the most important mission. I’ll ever be on.” He swore gazing into her eyes. “I promise, you won’t regret this.”

“Okay.” She hummed.

“Thank you, this means everything to me.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

“Yes, definitely.” He hailed clasping his hands together.

By the time Mac made it to Riley’s house she was already sitting on the porch curled up with her knees against her chest as she bit at her lip, waiting from him to arrive. When she noticed his car pull up, she quickly shot up and made her way to him, which made Mac anxious. He really hoped she wasn’t waiting for him to tell him she changed her mind. “Hey.” He greeted nervously.

“So.” She started with a shrug. “I mentioned you were coming, I told him you were my friend from work.” She paused. “I’m still trying to figure out how we’re going to explain the whole dad thing. Also, he mentioned you to my mom before, so he might remember you.” She told him brushing her hair behind her ear. “We talked to him about it, but he doesn’t remember much.” She continued apprehensively; Mac noticed that was a new quality. Riley never rambled; barley ever showed uneasiness. Riley was always more of an observer, quiet, secure, only commenting when she felt the need to.  “He’s going through a phase where’s he’s asking a lot of questions, so try to answer them the best you can.”

He nodded.

“I’m sorry, I know this is a lot.” She apologized.

He stood quiet for a second before he spoke. “No, it okay. I appreciate you telling me all this.”

“We’re all in the yard, and I think Jack may be in his playhouse it’s his favorite.” She informed him.

Mac was meet by a few familiar faces, and a few people he didn’t know as he walked through the yard. He felt like all eyes were on him at the moment and wondered if they thought of him as an absentee father, careless of his son’s feelings. He quickly brushed away those thoughts when he saw Jack tangle himself between Riley’s legs.

“Jack.” She said in almost a whisper. “This is mommy’s friend Mac.” She told him.

“Hey buddy.” Mac beamed bending down to his eye level, he looked almost identical to Riley except for the blue eyes and thick wavy dirty blonde hair. “It’s nice to meet you.”

The toddler waved shyly keeping close to his mother.

“So I heard you like robots.” Mac started as he unzipped his backpack. “I made you this.” He told him passing him a toy robot. His eyes grew wide as he stared back at his dad in amazement. “Do you like it?” Jack nodded in excitement.

“He loves it.” Riley announced taking her phone out to capture the moment. “Go on.” Riley directed.

He pressed every single button, on the handmade android and laughed. “Look mommy.”  He grinned showing off his new toy.

“I see baby.” Riley responded squatting next to them. “What do you say?”

“Thank you.” Jack sang jumping on top of Mac and hugging him.

“Oh.” He chuckled breathlessly catching Jack in his arms. “You’re welcome, buddy.” Tears instantly pooling in his eyes.

“Are you sad?” Jack wondered taking ahold of Mac’s face.

Mac smiled and shook his head. “No, I’m actually very happy.” He paused taking seat in front of his son. “Sometimes people cry when they’re happy.”

Jack stared back at him puzzled. “Okay.” He mumbled lowly letting go of him face. “Robot.”

Riley couldn’t help but get emotional herself, quickly wiping her tears. She never imagined her son would ever meet his father like this, and though she was initially concerned for them to meet she was glad, they finally had the chance.

As the night went on, all of Riley’s tension eased as she observed how comfortable Jack felt around Mac.

“See baby girl.” Diane said wrapping her arms around her daughter. “Jack loves him already.”

“That’s exactly what I was worried about.” She joked leaning into her mom’s embrace. “They’re both just so easy to love.”

“Why don’t you take some time to talk to Angus while I feed Jack.” Her mom suggested kissing her on the cheek before she headed towards them. “Sorry to interrupt.” Diane announced. “But it’s time for you to eat Jack.”

“But Mr. Robot-” He stuttered.

“Mr. Robot isn’t going anywhere.” She stated winking at Mac.

“Promise?” Jack questioned.

“I promise.” He declared with a nodding gesture.

“He hasn’t left your side all day.” Riley stated walking up to Mac.

He smirked eyeing her as she made her way towards him. “He’s incredible, Riles.” Mac praised. “I had no doubt he would be. He’s so intelligent, and so polite.”

“Yeah, he’s great.” She sighed. “Can’t take all the credit. I couldn’t have done it without my mom. They’re like best friends, inseparable.”

“I’m glad he has her, your mom is amazing.” He complimented. “I’ve always wondered what it would have been like growing up with a grandparent.” He confessed as he observed how lively Jack became when he was around Diane. “Bozer’s parent were great, but-” He paused. “I don’t know, just seeing them together makes me wonder you know?”

“Yeah, I know what you mean.” She commented. “But I think we did pretty okay for two kids that came from non-traditional backgrounds.” She giggled.

“I think so too.” He grinned.

“Hey Mac, Riley.” Bozer called out. “Come try my famous lasagna before it gone. “It’s only been out for like two minutes and its already half gone.” He announced.

Mac chuckled. “I did miss Bozer’s food.” Mac admitted.

“After you.” Riley stated following behind him.

For the few hours they were all together, it felt like nothing has changed and Mac never left. They were all joking around, playing some games including one of Jack’s favorites which was hide and seek. He mostly hid with Riley but when it was her turn to count, Jack hid with Mac. Mac couldn’t remember the last time he felt this full of joy, and he knew being around his son had a lot to do with that. The night was coming to an end and groups of people said they’re goodbyes until it was just, Mac, Bozer, Leanna, Desi, and David.

“Well.” Desi started. “Boz, Le and I, all have an early mission tomorrow so we should probably head out.” Desi suggested hoping the rest of the group got the memo.

“Yes, we should.” Leanna agreed pulling Bozer by the arm.

“Ow.” Bozer yelped. “I about to get another slice of Mama Colton’s pie.” Bozer told them.

“I think you’re all pied out babe.” Leanna grumbled as she pulled Bozer away.

“But-” Bozer protested.

“We’ll see you guys tomorrow.” Leanna announced.

“See you guys tomorrow.” Riley waved taking Jack by the hand. “It’s time to get ready for bed baby.”

“Mr. Robot room.” Jack murmured.

“Okay, fine.” Riley caved.

“Yay.” Jack celebrated quickly taking Mac by the hand and bringing him inside.

“He already thinks you’re amazing.” Riley told him Mac, as he was being dragged around the room by Jack. “He only shows his room to people he really likes.” She commented.

“Books.” He expressed grabbing one of the books and showing it to Mac.

“The very hungry caterpillar.” Mac read aloud before taking a seat next to the bookshelf. “One of my favorites.”

“Mommy read too.” Jack called sitting on her lap when she sat with them.

Mac and Riley took turns reading page after page, as Jack cuddled closer to Riley tiredly rubbing his eyes. “After we’re done reading, it’s time to start getting ready for bed.” Riley explained.

“Robot stay?” Jack asked eyeing Mac.

“Yes buddy, I made the robot for you.” Mac clarified placing the toy on his nightstand.

“You robot.” Jack babbled.

“Oh.” Mac’s mouth fell agape. “I-uh.”

“How about we go brush our teeth and put our pajamas on and then Mr. Robot can read you one more story.” Riley proposed as she twisted her fingers around his curls.

“I’d love that.” Mac told his son happily. “You can pick another book when you’re ready, I’ll wait for you here.”

As Riley headed to the bathroom with Jack, Diane took the opportunity to catch up with Mac and see how’s he’s been feeling after spending some time with his son. “So, how’s it going?” Diane probed.

“I think it’s going really good; he seems to be comfortable around me. But I still want to give him his space to feel things out.” Mac stated enthusiastically.

“I think that’s a good idea, you and Riley will slowly figure this coparent thing out.” Diane acknowledged taking a seat next to him. “All that matters is that you’re both here for him as much as you can be.”

“I promise. Always.” Mac swore wholeheartedly.

“He already loves you, and maybe is some way he knows you’re already an important part of his life cause I’ve never seen him like this with anyone he’s met on the first day.” Diane acknowledged. “You’re a wonderful man Angus, but sometimes you just have to get out of the big ol’ head of yours.” She counseled taking ahold of his face. “Also thank you.”

“For what?” Mac questioned puzzled.

“For giving Riley time to figure things out, I know how hard it must have been.” She told him sincerely.

“Yeah.” He sighed bowing his head. “Extremely, I just hope I become someone he can always look up to, no matter what.”

She patted his back and gave him a small smile. “You’re going to be great.” She paused when she heard Jack making his way through the halls. “Do you hear his little footsteps, he’s so excited that you’re here.”

“Mr. Robot.” Jack yelled excitedly running towards him.

“Looks like you’ve already started.” Diane commented winking at Mac.

“Hey buddy.” Mac beamed embracing his son. “Did you want to pick out another book to read?”

“Yes.” He warbled pulling out as many books his little arms could hold.

“What are you doing baby.” Riley interrupted as she entered the room.

“Mr. Robot read to me.” He expressed looking back at Mac.

Hearing Riley call their son baby, filled his heart. He knew everything was a mess between them and the most important thing to him right now was to build a relationship with his son, but he also hoped to eventually build his relationship back up with Riley. She meant everything to him, and he was drawn to her like a magnet. His eyes just followed her as she made her way to the bookshelf closing the distance between them. “Mr. Robot does love to read.” She grinned looking back at Mac. “But remember I said just one.”

Jack picked up a book about a dinosaur in space and sat happily on Riley lap as they again took turns reading.

“One more mama.” He yawned.

“That’s up to Mr. Robot.” She whispered grabbing his blanket and wrapping around him.

Mac couldn’t say no, he didn’t want to say no. He didn’t want the night to end but he knew it soon had to. “Yes, of course.”

“You go ahead. We’ll just listen this time.” Riley told him nuzzling her son as she ran her fingers through his hair. By the time Mac got to the middle of the book Jack was fast asleep cuddled against Riley’s chest. “Eight-thirty on the dot.” Riley whispered.

“Just like that?” Mac mumbled lowly.

“Just like that.” She answered getting up from the ground and lying him in his crib.

“He looks so peaceful; I can watch him sleep all night.” Mac stated gently brushing his thumb against his cheek.

“For the first couple of weeks after he was born, that’s all I did.” She confessed gazing down at her son. “Well until exhaustion hit. No mission has ever made me as exhausted as being a mom to a newborn has.”

“Riles.” Mac sighed remorsefully.

“I’d do it again in a heartbeat Mac.” She replied, her eyes boring into his. “I don’t regret a second.”

“I wish I could say the same.” He yearned taking one last look at his son before they headed out his room. “I love you, Jack.” He said closing the door behind him.

The quietly made their way to the living room where Diane was patiently waiting for them. “I packed some food for you to take home Angus.”

“You didn’t have to do that.” Mac said thankfully.

“I wanted to, you made my grandson’s night tonight.” She said hugging him. “It was really good to see you.” She told him kissing his temple. “Have a goodnight.”

“You too.” He replied squeezing her.

“Thank you for having me tonight.” Mac told Riley as they made their way to the driveway.”

“Thank you for coming.” Riley added. “Jack loved spending time with you.”

“Anytime, I loved spending time with him.” He mentioned. “Thank you for trusting me and letting me be a part of his life.”

“You’re welcome.” She nodded. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“See you tomorrow.” He echoed enfolding her into his arms.

“Get home safe. Text me when you get there.” She told him before he got into his car.

“Will do.” He promised.

His drive home was silent, just the sound of the wind through his zipping through his windows. He didn’t want to hear any that would distract him of thoughts from today. He couldn’t have imagined of a more perfect day. He finally has a relationship with his son, and he couldn’t wait to see what it leads to.

Made it home.

Mac noticed the typing bubble was up for a while and then disappeared just for it to appear again before Riley’s text came through.

Thanks for coming tonight, sleep well.

Mac ached for the day he didn’t have to sleep away from Riley or their son. The day they could all be a family, he had faith that someday it would happen again.

Sweet dreams.

So Mac and Jack were finally able to meet. Do you think Mac will be able to keep his promise and be a permanent part of Jack's life? Do you think Riley would give Mac a second chance? I'd love to hear what you guys think. Thanks for reading 😊

Chapter 4: Chapter 4

Chapter Text

Sweet dreams…

She was lying on his chest tracing his palm, with her finger. He was fast asleep, while she was wide awake it was her nine month of pregnancy and sleep was no longer part of her daily routine. She was lucky if she was able to sleep two consecutive hours, but she didn’t mind she’d loved watching him sleep. He was finally back after being gone for almost eight months; it’s been an emotional couple weeks for the both of them. But Mac was ecstatic to find out he was going to be a dad never leaving Riley’s sight since he’s been back, and though at times his over protectiveness drove her crazy, she loved him for it. She groaned in pain, knowing it was part of the third trimester. Braxton hicks a reminder that Jack could be here at any moment, so she breathed through the pain. “Ugh.” She carped when she felt a shooting pain go down her leg, she involuntary wrapped her fingers around his hand and squeezing it.

“Ow. Ow ow.” Mac complained waking from his sleep. “Riley honey?” He questioned when he found her doubled over in pain. “You’ve been in pain for days baby, I think it’s time for you to go to the hospital.” He suggested kissing her forehead. “I think he’s ready to meet us.”

“But I’m not ready, I don’t know if I’m ready to be his mom.” She whispered as tears escaped her. “What if I’m not good enough?”

“You’re going to be the best mom.” He swore. “You already have been, you’ve grown a healthy insanely large baby.” He chuckled rubbing her belly. “There’s nothing you can’t do honey.”

“I love you.” She expressed kissing his chest.

“I love you too.” He warbled lifting her chin, so her lips met his.

By the time they arrived at the hospital, she was almost fully dilated. They quickly prepared her room and within the hour, they met Jack. She’s never seen Mac so content; it was like being Jack’s dad was part of his destiny. “Hi Jack, hey buddy.” He beamed looking down at his son. “I’m your dad, and this is your mommy.” He beamed taking a seat next to her. “Riley, he’s perfect.” He breathed resting his head on hers.

“We did good, huh?” She smiled looking at her son.

“I couldn’t imagine doing this with anyone else.” He encouraged kissing her. “Thank you so, so much.” He mumbled against her lips, before he rocked Jack to sleep.

She smiled watching them together, she never thought she could love something so much. “This is everything I’ve always wanted. You being here, us as a family.” She paused holding back tears. “I was so scared, that he wouldn’t get the chance to meet you.”

“I’m right here Riles.” He swore placing Jack in the bassinet and lying next to her. “I’m not going anywhere.” He assured pecking her temple.

She woke up with tears in her eyes, the dream was so vivid. She’s never dreamed of Mac being there while she gave birth, she’s had other dreams of him while he was gone. Mostly of he and Jack spending time together she was always the observer in the dream but in this dream, they were all together. And maybe it was her subconscious showing her what she could have had since he’s back. But what she experienced was a dream and her reality was something completely different. The dream awoke her a few minutes before her alarm, so she quickly brushed her teeth and got dressed before heading to Jack’s room to get him ready for the day and prepare breakfast.

“Here baby eat your oatmeal.” Riley begged her toddler as she ran around the kitchen packing his lunch. “This is what I get.” Riley grumbled upset, she had the time last night to pack everything she need for the day, but she was too lazy to get up from the couch once she got Jack into bed. Diane was gone for the next two weeks, and Riley was on her own, which she didn’t mind but things were a lot easier with her mom around. “Baby you have eat before we go.”

“Eggos.” Jack protested pushing his bowl away.

“You love oatmeal.” She told him trying to feed him as he turned his head in refusal.

“Eggos.” He demanded.

“Jackson, you’re so lucky I’m running late today.” She disciplined and she popped some eggos in the toaster and made some scramble eggs. “You’re at least going to eat these eggs, no excuses.”

“Okay.” Jack pouted.

While Jack ate, Riley ran around the house throwing some clothes in the dryer and grabbing some extra clothes for Jack since they just started potty training. Riley was thankful The Phoenix let her bring Jack with her to work whenever she needed to. It was unconventional but she couldn’t find a daycare that worked around her insane hours. Once she was done, she cleaned him up and threw the dishes in the sink before she grabbed her keys and headed towards the door.

“Robot.” Jack shouted before he ran into his room to grab his new toy. It’s been a week since Mac brought him the toy and he took it everywhere with him.

“Miss. Mattie.” Jack sang happily. “Morning.”

“Good morning baby blondie.” She said squeezing his cheek. “Riley go ahead and settle in, I got him.”

“Mattie-” Riley protested.

“Riley it’s okay.” She assured taking Jack by the hand. “Take a moment to breathe.” She advised taking Jack to their meeting room.

Jack eyes grew wide with excitement when he saw Mac standing in the middle of the room reading his plans for the day. “Mr. Robot.” Jack yelled running towards him leaping into his arms.

“Hey Jack, good morning bud.” He greeted cheerfully picking him up and spinning him around. “What is he doing here?”

“Riley brings him to work once in a while.” Bozer informed him.

“Robot.” He beamed showing off his toy.

“I’m glad you like it.” He chuckled kissing his temple. “Where’s your mommy?”

“Riley is just getting settled, she should be here in a couple of minutes.” Mattie told them. “So, we’ll wait until she gets here to start.”

As she made her way towards the war room, she could hear Jack’s giggle echoing through the halls. He was wrapped around Mac’s leg being dragged around the room as Mac pretend to be a robot. “I am Mr. robot.” He chanted Jack’s giggles just getting louder. She watched them from behind the door for bit before she entered. It brought her so much comfort knowing Jack felt secure around Mac.

“Hi mommy.” He waved.

“Hi Jackie.” She beamed. “Are you having fun?”

He nodded eagerly looking up at his father.

She walked up to them and bent down to his eye level. “Mommy and Mr. Robot have to get to work.” She told him. “So, I brought you some crayons and a book, so you can color for a bit.”

“I want to play.” He pouted gripping tighter to his father’s leg.

Mac looked over to Riley, before he spoke. “If it’s okay with your mommy, how about we sit together while I work and you color.”

“That sounds like a good idea, what do you think baby?” Riley asked Jack.

“Can-can you color with me?” Jack stuttered.

“When I’m done working I can.” He proposed detaching him from his leg and picking him up.

Riley gave Mac a small smile and nodded. “Well, I’ll be over here if you need me.” She told them.

For about thirty minutes they all sat in silence working on their individual projects, before they were interrupted by Jack. “Mommy can I play now?”

“Hey Jack buddy, if it’s okay with your mom.” He started looking over at Riley. “How about you and I take a break?”

“Can we go to the park?” Jack asked excitedly.

“There’s a playground outside the lab, which Matty decided to build just for Jack.” She informed Mac when he looked over at her puzzled. “Completely unnecessary, since I only bring him here once in a while.”

“You think unnecessary, I think otherwise.” Matty smirked.

“Completely spoiled.” She complained rolling her eyes. “And you’re not helping Mac.” She stated half-jokingly. “You have fun with Mr. Robot.” Riley winked.

“We’ll see you in a bit.” Mac said taking Jack by the hand.

“They’re so effortless together.” Mattie commented taking a seat next to Riley. “And you’re doing amazing. I know you’re probably billion thoughts running around in your head but you’re doing the right thing. You’re a great mom Riley, you always have been.”

“Thank you.” She whispered pulling her in for a hug. “I’m going to head to my office and do some work there.” She informed Mattie.

“Okay, if you need anything. Even just to talk, my door is always open.” Mattie said giving her a small smile.

Riley nodded before she headed to her office, she always worked faster in her office, and she didn’t want to put too much pressure on Mac with having to take care of Jack all on his own, since it was all very new to him. For the next forty-five minutes she worked getting through most of the paperwork she had to get through for the day. Before she headed out to check on Jack. “Looks like you two are having a good time.” Riley commented making her way to the playset, as Mac helped Jack on the monkey bars.

“Mommy.” Jack shouted wriggling out of Mac’s arms and making his way to his mother. “I’ve missed you mommy.”

“I missed you too baby.” She grinned kissing his cheek and pulling him onto her lap.

“Mr. Robot is my best friend mommy.” Jack told her shyly playing with the rings on her fingers.

“And you’re mine buddy.” Mac stated warmly, caressing his cheek as he took a seat next to Riley in the grass.

“Mr. Robot is a really good friend to have.” Riley mentioned twirling her fingers around his curls.

“Can we all be friends?” Jack questioned innocently looking up at his father.

“We’ll always be friends, baby.” Riley promised looking over at her son’s father, there relationship was currently far from perfect, but Mac was her friend first and she intended to keep it that way. “How about you me and Mr. Robot spend lunch time together today?”

“How does pizza sound?” Mac said eagerly, thankful for the effort Riley has been putting in to give him time with Jack.

“Jack loves pizza.” Riley commented before she whispered something in his ear.

“Thank you for playing with me.” Jack smirked before bashfully hiding behind his mom’s hair.

“Anytime bud.”

“Jack started potty training last week, and he’s been doing really well sitting on the potty we’re still working on the using the toilet part.” She informed him. “So, we should probably get inside.”

“I’ll see you guys later.” Mac bowed kissing the top of Jack’s head.

Mac and Riley didn’t talk much during lunch only talking if Jack asked questions. It was apparent that they both cared enough to put their feelings aside and spend time together for Jack’s sake. But three years of pent-up emotion was a lot on both of them, and neither of them wanted to continue arguing, especially in front of Jack. After lunch they went their separate ways to finish the rest of their workday. But Mac wanted to see how Riley was feeling emotionally, about everything since he knew everything that was going on can be emotionally draining.

“Riles, can we talk?” Mac asked when she found her in her office with Bozer.

“Hey little man, you want to come check on sparky with me?” Bozer suggested, he knew his best friend well and he knew the conversation probably wasn’t something they wanted Jack to hear. “You know where to find us.” He told them

“Do you feel comfortable with all this?” Mac questioned when he heard the door shut behind them.

“Mac you’re his dad, and he’s happy around you.”  She expressed. “As long as he’s happy there’s nothing for me to feel uncomfortable about.”

“Riles.” He sighed. “I feel like trying to understand how you feel, how you really feel is so hard.” He confessed slightly frustrated. “You’re just so distant.”

“I’m fine with you spending time with him, I love that you two finally met. So, I don’t know exactly what you want from me?” She questioned in frustration.

“To talk to me.” He quarreled back. “I know it’s not easy, and I know it probably won’t go back to how it once was, but I need to know how you’re feeling. Your true feelings.” He expressed. “Even if it hurts my feelings.”

“About what Mac.” She sighed. “Us?”

“Yes.” He hesitated, trying his best to articulate his words. “And I don’t mean it romantically, as much as I love you and always pictured my future with you, I know I ruined that. But I still want us to be friends and communicate.”

She hung her head in frustration. “What do you want me to say? That I wish you never left? That I cried for months? That I thought I’d never see you again and that I’d have to raise him without his dad? That you broke my heart? But even after all this shit, I can’t stay mad at you, that I don’t want to stay mad at you.” She finally admitted. “I don’t-.” She paused. “We’ll always be friends Mac, it just hard for me to trust you right now.”

“I know it doesn’t matter how many times I say it but Riles I’m sorry.” He pulled her into his arms resting his chin on the top of her head. “You guys mean everything to me, and I’m hoping that eventually earn that trust back.”

She wrapped her arms around his waist and held him tightly. “He loves you already.” She told him gazing up at him. “Please don’t ever leave him. I want you to be a part of his life, always.”

His eyes watered just thinking about losing anymore time from his son. “He has my heart, Riles.” He voiced through tears. “I don’t want a lose another second.”

She wiped his tears comforting him. “I know we have a lot to talk about, and we will take time to talk about all of it.” She breathed eyeing him, he always asks how she’s doing but she needs to know how he’s feeling too. She knows she put up wall when it came to Mac but in order for them to have a healthy parenting relationship, they needed to work on their communication. “But I need you to talk to me too, about how you’re feeling, if your overwhelmed, I know finding out you’re someone’s dad can be a lot, and everything that went on the past three years, with the mission and being gone for so long. I know it wasn’t by choice, but Mac what happened?”

He held his breath, he hasn’t talk to anyone about what happened. Matty even offered to talk to the therapist at the Phoenix, and he knew the smart thing to do was to accept that offer but he wanted to prioritize his relationship with Riley and Jack first. “Um I-” He stuttered his throat went dry as his vision went in and out with memories of the last three years. He wheezed his lungs gasped for air.

“Mac.” She took his face in her hands and gazed into his eyes. “Hey, hey.” She pulled him against her chest. “Breathe with me, breathe. I’m sorry. You’re here. We’re here. You’re back with your friends and family, with your son.” She felt him starting to relax under her. “We’re so happy you’re back. We need you here.” She voiced slowly leading him to the couch. “Are you alright?” She asked when he breathing got back to normal.

He quickly wiped his tears giving her a small smile. “Yeah.” He paused. “I’m sorry, that the first time that’s happened.” He’s been questioned about the mission before but that was the first time he ever experienced PTSD when he was asked about it. He knew talking to Riley would be a possible trigger, but he never thought he’d experience a full-blown panic attack.

She shook her head. “No, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have asked.”

“You have every right to.” Mac expressed he wanted to tell her why he was gone for so long. But currently he couldn’t. “I should probably make an appointment with the therapist Mattie was telling me about.”

She pulled him into a hug tangling her fingers in his hair. “I forgive you Mac, I hope you know that. I know it wasn’t by choice, I just wished things happened a little differently.” She confessed pulling away taking ahold of his hands. “I should have never directed my anger towards you the way I did, and I’m so sorry for that. But now I can see Jack is safe with you, and we’ll always be here, we’re family.”

“Thank you.” He said gratefully. “I was the one who asked you how you were feeling, and you had to talk me out of a panic attack.”

“Isn’t this how it’s always been?” She giggled.

“You’re absolutely right.” He chuckled. “I should probably head out and make that appointment.” He stated standing up.

She couldn’t deny she was worried about Mac, especially after what she just witnessed but she trusted he will get the help he needed. “You got this Mac.”

“Thanks.” He gestured before leaving the room.

Chapter Text

Happy Holidays, this break has finally given me a chance to update!  😊 Hope you guys like this chapter!

2 months later

It’s been three months since Mac’s been back, and he and Riley have come into a comfortable routine when it came to coparenting Jack. Every other day he’d spend his afternoons with Mac and once a week they’d all spend the afternoon together whether it’d be out to dinner, to the museum, the zoo, anything Mac could think of that made up for lost time. Tonight, it was Riley’s afternoon with Jack, but Bozer decided to make dinner for the team tonight at Mac’s place and he was hoping that’d give him more of chance to spend with Jack. He and Riley have also slowly progressed in their friendship, they’ve become a lot more talkative around each other and have joked about their old missions that’ve gone bad. He knew his relationship with Riley will probably never go back to what is once was, but he was grateful for what they currently have, because it’s been hard not having one of his best friends.

“Hey Riles?” He called as he watched her pack up or stuff to leave for the night. “Boze is making dinner at my place tonight and the team is coming over, I was wondering if you wanted to pick up Jack and come over?” He asked shyly nervously scratching the back of his head.

She gave him a small smile aware of his current timidness even after three years Riley still knew Mac like the back of her hand. “Yeah sure, I bet Jack would love that.” She commented. “I’ll be there like an hour.”

“Great, I’ll see you there then.” He beamed opening the door for her as she left her office.

When Mac opened the door for Riley, a huge smile was plastered over Jack’s face as he swung his legs excitedly around Riley’s waist. “Mr. Robot.” He squealed.

“Hi Buddy.” He chuckled caressing his face. “Unc Boze.” He screamed jumping out of Riley’s arms and running towards the kitchen.

“Hey.” Bozer greeted picking him up. “I made your favorite, spaghetti and meatballs.”

He wrapped his tiny arms around Bozer’s neck and squeezed him. “Thank you.”

“If it were up to Bozer, Jack would only be eating his meals exclusively.” Riley expressed through laughter, as she took off her jacket. “A few months ago, when he came with me to work, he literally threw out the lunch I made him and gave him the one he packed.”

He chuckled grabbing her diaper bag and jacket and hanging it in the closet. “Best worst uncle award goes to Boze.” He mumbled jokingly as they made their way to the kitchen.

“Heard that.” Bozer yelled. “I’m your favorite uncle right JJ?” He asked Jack as he put an extra meatball on his plate.

Mac and Riley looked at each other before bursting out in laughter. “Seeing as you’re his only uncle, I don’t think he has much of a choice.” Riley mentioned.

“I’m offended.” Bozer pouted crossing his arms over his chest.

Riley rolled her eyes before taking a seat next to her son changing the subject. “When did you get him this highchair Mac?”

“Um.” He hesitated in hopes she feels like he wasn’t over stepping. “Couple weeks ago, when he started coming over for dinner.” He told her. “Trying to feed him while he was on my lap was bit messy.” He revealed.

She gave him a knowing smile. “Well, thank you.”

“There’s no need.” He gestured sitting on the other side of their son. “Is the spaghetti good bud?”

“It’s yummy.” He announced with mouth full of spaghetti.

“Anything for my favorite nephew.” Bozer stated placing their plates on the table before joining them.

“We’re not going to wait for the team?” Mac wondered.

“Matty got stuck at the Phoenix with Russ, and David and Desi bailed.” Bozer informed them.

“And Leanna?” Riley questioned.

“She should be here any second.” Bozer said placing some bread at the table just as the doorbell rang. “Right on time.”

After dinner they all decided to go up to the deck and make smores for dessert, Riley kept Jack at a distance while Mac made him his dessert. She treasured how much Jack adored spending time with Mac, she could physically see how much love they have for each other. She was thankful how easy it was for Jack to transition spending certain days with Mac, it was a slow transition the first couple of weeks but when Jack started questioning on when he was able to go to Mac’s again, she knew she had nothing to worry about.

“So much chocolate.” Jack side wide-eyed when Mac came over to give him his smore. “It’s so big.”

“Jack baby, you want to come share with mommy?” Riley asked.

“Sure mommy.” He smiled slowly making his way to her as he tried his best to not drop his treat.

“So concentrated.” Riley giggled meeting him halfway. “Why don’t you take a bite first.” She offered squatting down, so they were face to face. “What do you think?”

“It’s good.” He sang. “Marsh...mallow is my favorite.” He said sticking his finger is the smore and licking the marshmallow off his finger. “You try mommy.” He said feeding her the cracker.

“Thank you, baby.” She beamed taking a small bite. “Your hands are all sticky now.”

“I’ve learned to be prepared for times like this.” Mac told her as he pulled a small pouch of wipes from his pocket. “Do you mind if I wipe your hands, Jack?”

He shook his head as he stuck his hands out. “All better.” Jack announced when Mac finished.

“All better.” Mac echoed kissing his son’s hands.

Jack giggled jumping into Mac’s arms as Mac showered him in kisses. “I love you Mr. Robot.”

“I love you too.” Mac said emotionally that was the first time Jack has ever said that to him, it was a moment he’d never forget. “I love you very very much.” He told him

Riley just watched them as tears fell from her eyes, her heart felt heavy with joy. Seeing them together meant everything to her, Mac being back was the best thing for Jack and she couldn’t be happier for them.

After about twenty minutes and few marshmallows Jack was curled up in Riley’s arms asleep by the fire. “Little man is knocked out.” Bozer mentioned through laughter. “There’s nothing like a belly full of food that helps anyone fall asleep.”

“I remember how tiny he used to be in your arms, now he’s almost half your size.” Leanna commented. “He’s growing so fast.”

“Remember how chunky he was? He looked just like the Michelin man.” She snickered pulling her phone out her pocket and scrolling through phone for a picture.

“What was he eating?” Mac chuckled, eyeing the photo. He noticed how much Jack has changed right now was the spitting image of Riley but when he was younger, he did see the similarities between the two of them. The same sloped nose, same eyes, even the same smile. It hurt him knowing he’d never have the chance to see his son that small, but he was grateful for the present.

“Milk.” Riley answered truthfully. “Just breast milk and formula at that point.” Jack wasn’t the biggest baby when he was born, he was long and lean, until he reached his third month he just wouldn’t stop growing.

“Poor guy, he looks like he’s about to explode.” He told her his eyes scanning every photo she showed. Most of them were of Jack in clothing that barley fit him because he was so stocky, every time she scrolled Jack just seemed to be getting larger and larger. “And what happened when he finally got to eat food?” Mac wondered as she scrolled further and found of photo of her feeding Jack one of his first foods. He noticed how much smaller her frame was in this photo, her hair looked thinner, her eyes were sunken, and it looks like she hadn’t slept in days, but she still had smile on her face. His heart broke, seeing her like that it angered him how much stress he physically and emotionally put her through. He knew now wasn’t the best moment to talk about it, so he kept it to himself.

But Riley noticed the worriment in his eyes, so she quickly put her phone away and gave him a hesitant smile. “When he finally learned how to walk, he lost a lot of the baby fat.” She informed him. “But he still has his cheeks.” She said happily softly kissing the top of his head.

“I’ve noticed that nothing wakes him.” Mac observed, the couple times he’s been around Jack while he’s asleep, he noticed that not even an explosive going off could wake him up.

“He can literally sleep anywhere.” She giggled massaging her hands through his curls. “No matter where I am, no matter how loud.”

“I think it’s hereditary.” Bozer half-joked, when Riley had the chance to sleep, she’d take it no matter where she was, she was a light sleeper during missions but once that mission was over it would be almost impossible to wake Riley up.

“Hey, hey I have a son now, I’ve grown out of it.” She defended.

“Right.” Bozer countered.

“Leave her alone Boze.” Leanna argued smacking his arm.

“Don’t defend her, you know damn well I’m right.” Bozer chuckled.

“I have an alarm now.” She disputed. “Plus, the monitor he yells out for me when he needs me.” She quietly admitted.

“See.” Bozer hollered making everyone burst out into laughter.

“I should probably get him to bed, he can’t sleep in my arms forever.” Riley said solemnly wishing she was able to spend more time with her friends.

“Actually, I wanted to show you something before you go.” He communicated getting up from the bench and heading inside. He led her to one of the guest rooms, which was no longer a guest room but a bedroom for Jack.

“Mac.” She gasped snuggling Jack closer, as they entered the room. It was a space themed room, with a night light the covered the room with stars and a small telescope by the window. The toddler bed was covered in galaxy bed sheets, with a bedside table that had a table light replica of his favorite robot toy. There was a dresser filled with a couple of clothes and diapers, and a box filled with toys. Riley was left speechless she truly didn’t know what to say.

“The little desk over there, is filled with crayons, paints and games.” He informed her. “I’ve been reading a lot about toddlers and how they learn, and the best way to speak to them about basically everything, even difficult family situations.” She didn’t say anything, and he just watched as she walked around the room observing everything, he was both excited and worried with what she might think. He cleared his throat. “Whenever you’re ready, whenever you think he’s ready.” Mac paused. “He has a space here.” He secured eyeing her in hopes she’d express her feelings.

“I can see that.” She said gently, her eyes filling with tears.

“Why don’t you let him rest in here, until you’re ready to go.” He suggested. “And maybe we can talk more in the kitchen?”

“Yeah sure.” She nodded kissing the top of Jack’s head before lying him on the bed. They quietly made their way out the room carefully shutting the door behind them. “I want you know, I’m happy. I’m so happy you created this space for him.” She looked up at him and smiled shyly. “I’m just emotional about having to share him.” She confessed. “I want him to come over and spend time with you, I never thought I’d have to share him it’s always been him and I, but now you’re back.” She breathed. “And you deserve to spend as much time with him as I do it’s just going to be a transition for all of us.”

“I agree, and it’s no rush.” He safeguarded leaning against the kitchen counter. “But I just wanted you to know he also has a home here, and that he’s safe with me. I’ve been going to therapy regularly and working on my PTSD.”

“I know you have, and I know he will be. Thank you, Mac.” There was bit of silence before she spoke again. “I was thinking since Mattie needs me to go to New York this week to meet with the president of some tech company, maybe you can stay with him. My flight is at three am, so it would probably be better if you come over to my house, my mom is having a girl’s night that day, so she won’t be home. I don’t know if I’ll make it in time for bedtime, but I’ll be back that night. But I’ll make sure I have everything written down, and you can sleep in my bed.” She offered.

“I really don’t mind sleeping on the couch.” He told her not wanting to invade her space.

“Wherever you’re comfortable.” She expressed. “He’s a morning person, so he’ll love that you’re also a morning person.

“Okay.” He grinned. “Thank you for this.”

“Don’t mention it.” She yawned pulling her hair up.

Something he knew she always did when she was tired. “Coffee?” He suggested heading to the pantry to grab a pouch of her favorite roast.

“Yes, please.” She perked sitting on top of the kitchen island, one of her old habits she always sat on the kitchen island when they lived together. Mostly just to watch Mac work on whatever creation he had at the moment, they barley ever used it to cook. “No macventions on the kitchen counter? That’s surprising.” She commented.

“I’ve moved everything up to the attic, since toddlers like to get into everything.” He told her lightheartedly.

“Probably for the best.” She snorted. She couldn’t deny how much she loved seeing Mac as a dad, she always daydreamed of what he would be like while he was gone. But seeing it in real-time was better than she imagined.

“I’ve seen what he could do with blocks, he can probably build his own robot if he got into my stuff.” He chuckled as he grabbed a mug from the cabinet, finding one of their old mugs that was gifted by Diane, the mug was covered in photos of Mac and Riley. Most of the photos were pictures of them with huge smiles plastered on their faces, when they were on dates or on vacation. He loved that mug, it reminded him of better times. He sighed before shifting the mug to the back of the cabinet and grabbing a plain black one. “Do you still like yours extra sweet?”

“Yes, I do.” She giggled. “But I only use two packets now, I’m working on myself.” She joked.

“Well, here you go.” He chuckled passing her two sugar packets.

“Thank you.” She mumbled blowing on her mug to cool it off before she took a sip. “I’m really happy you’re back Mac.” She disclosed looking over at him. “I’m happy you’re safe, and that you get to be a father to our son.” She said through a broken voice. “It has been really hard without you.” She admitted blinking back her tears as she placed her mug aside. “I’m sorry.” She wheezed burying her face in her hands.

“Riles.” He sighed embracing her. “You have nothing to be sorry about.” He held her face in his hands wiping her tears as he coddled her against him. “You did it without me, you could have done it without me you’re stronger than I’ll ever be.”

“I never wanted to.” She yearned tightly gripping onto his shirt as she sobbed. “I wanted you here with me. I know we never really talked about having kids, but I never thought I was going to do it alone.” She sighed. “Not for as long as I did, I thought you’d make it back before I gave birth, that we’d do this together.”

“I’m here now, I’m not going anywhere.” He promised, holding back his own tears peppering the top of her head with kisses “I’m so sorry for what I put you through.” He huffed thinking back to the photo. “I want to tell you everything, and I will. I promise I will, I just need a little more time.”

She gazed up at him with her puffy red eyes. “I understand.” She gestured her eyes never leaving his.

He gently swiped a tear as it fell down her face. “I want you to tell me everything too, even if it breaks me.” He swore resting his forehead against hers.

She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around his waist, taking in this moment between them. It’s the first time since he’s been back that she felt she can breathe again, but she had something to wanted to tell him. “Mac I-”

“Is everything alright down here?” Leanna wondered she had become worried after not hearing from them for a while. “Sorry.” She said rushing out the kitchen knowing she interrupted something after finding them embraced together.

“Hey Leanna.” Riley called quickly jumping off the counter. “It’s fine Mac and I were just talking.” She told her apprehensively putting her hands in her pockets.

“I made coffee.” He offered grabbing an extra mug.

“No, it’s okay I’ll just be upstairs with Bo-”

“What’s taking you guys so long?” Bozer asked. “Where’s Jack?”

Mac clenched his jaw, his body growing tense with every question. As each as much as he loved being with his friends today was the first time Riley has fully opened up to him since he’s been back. Before everything she expressed was behind a wall, she built around herself and Mac was standing on the other side with no way to get in. When a door finally opened, they were interrupted, and he couldn’t help but be frustrated. “Uh, he’s sleeping in his room.”

“You finished his room? That’s great.” Bozer expressed eagerly obliviously grabbing himself a cup of coffee.

“Yeah, I can’t wait for him to see it.” Mac said halfheartedly running his fingers through his hair.

“Hey Riles, can we talk?” Leanna whispered for only her to hear.

Riley nodded heading towards the living room. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to ruin whatever was happen-”

“Le, we were just talking.” She explained. “It wasn’t like that.” She paused looking back towards the kitchen. “It can’t be like that.”

“Does he know?” Leanna asked with worriment.

She shook her head. “Things are finally getting semi back to normal with us, I can’t tell him now.” She sighed slumping down on the couch.

She took a seat next to her enfolding her in her arms. “I know its hard Ri, and I know you hate hurting him, but I think he should know.”

“I know and I will tell him.” She stated truthfully. “Eventually.”

Detangling Jack’s hair in shower was always a fight every washday, so she did what any good mother would do, she bribed him on wash days he got an extra thirty minutes of TV time so he can sit still, and Riley could detangle his hair in peace. “Baby, mommy wants to talk about something.” She told him as she finished styling his hair.

“Okay mommy.”

She turned him around, so they were facing each other, his bright blue eyes stared back at her curiously. She felt guilty for bringing her two-year-old son into such a complicated life, but she needed him to know and wanted to explain this to him as clearly as possible, hoping he’d understand without becoming too confused. “You’ve been spending a lot of time with Mr. Robot.”

“Mhm.” Jack nodded happily. “I fun with Mr. Robot.”

“And Mr. Robot has a lot of fun with you too.” She told him with a grin.

“Do you know why you spend a lot of time with Mr. Robot?”

“Cause he’s my best friend.” He said innocently fidgeting with the small toy he had in his hand.

“Jack, remember when I told you about how babies like you come from people that love each other very much.” The little boy just looked at her wide-eyed. “What if I told you Mr. Robot was your daddy?”

“You love Mr. Robot?” Jack questioned.

She nodded. “I do love Mac.” She confessed. “He’s mommy’s best friend too, and he gave me you.” She kissed his temple and pulled him close. “Do you want to spend the day tomorrow with your daddy, while mommy works?”

He nodded eagerly. “I love Mr. Robot too.” He looked up at his mother confused. “He’s, my daddy?”

Riley giggled squeezing him. “He is, and he loves being your daddy.”

“He’s always my daddy?” Jack questioned inquisitively.

“He’s always been your daddy, and he will always be your daddy.” Riley answered, he’s never questioned her about not having a dad, but she knew he knew most kids did have dads because he’s been exposed to it, from meeting Riley’s dad to his toddler friend’s dads, and even from the books he’s read.

“Best friend?” He questioned in worriment.

“He can be your best friend and your daddy.” She told him.

“Wow.” He gasped. “Mr. daddy robot is amazing.”

She giggled. “He is, and because you’re part of him you’re amazing too.”

He took Riley’s face in his hands and smiled. “I love you mommy.”

“I love you too, baby.” She sang showering him with kisses. She knew he fully didn’t understand the concept of what she told him, but he understood enough, and she was glad he finally knew the truth.

“Hey, come in.” She said opening the door as she rushed around the living room and packed her bag.

“Do you need help with anything?” Mac asked as he closed the door behind him.

“No, I’m okay.” She huffed as pieces of her curls full out of her bun as she clumsily put on her shoes. “I put the list on top of the counter.”

He drew his lips into a thin line and headed to the kitchen. He could tell she was nervous having to leave Jack alone with him for the entire day and he understood her apprehension, but he wanted to keep proving to her that Jack was safe with him.

“All his food for the day is in the fridge, besides the eggs for his breakfast. He loves eggs, sometimes he can be a picky eater when it comes to breakfast but eggs are the one thing he will always eat.”

“Got it.” He answered his eyes following her everywhere she went.

“First aid kit and medications are in the hallway closet.” She informed him grabbing the monitor. “He normally wakes up around six-thirty, seven o’clock, so you still have time to get some sleep if you want.” She paused. “I feel like I’m forgetting something.” She stated out loud as she looked through the list.

“Riles, we’re going to be fine.” He promised. “I’ll text if I need anything.”

“I know and I trust you. I do.” She assured. “But this is the first time he’s going to be without me or my mom for an entire day.”

“I understand.” He told her. “I think I found what you’re forgetting, passing her, her rig.”

“Thank you.” She exhaled stuffing it in her bag, he hesitated before she spoke again. “So, I told Jack about you being his dad.” She started. “He’s seems to have taken it well, and finds you to be more amazing than before.”

“Yeah?” He questioned relieved.

“Obviously, he might not fully grasp the concept of what I told him, but he was so happy. And maybe it’s the idea of having a dad like everyone else.” She explained. “But he seemed not to get over the fact that not only are you his dad, but you still get to be his best friend.”

He chuckled. “Well whatever way he construes it, I’m just glad he knows and he’s happy about it.”

“Yeah, me too.” She agreed putting on her coat and grabbing her keys. “I’ll see you tonight.”

“See you later, be safe.” He mumbled against her shoulder as he engulfed her in his arms.

“Always.” She assured resting her head against him.

Riley quietly unlocked the front door; Jack should be in bed already and since it was almost midnight she knew Mac was probably asleep as well. When she entered, she kicked off her boots and headed towards his room only to find Jack and Mac cuddled together asleep on the couch. She couldn’t help herself and took a picture of them, she use to yearn for the day she’d see them together like this. She loved watching Mac become a dad, he’s everything she could ever want for Jack. As cute as they looked snuggled up on the couch together, Jack always slept longer when he was in his own bed. She gently tried to pick up Jack from Mac’s embrace and his grip only grew tighter as his eyes shot open.

“Hey, it’s just me.” She voiced.

“Riles.” He exhaled like he’s been holding on to that breath since she left. “I’m sorry, he couldn’t sleep so we ended reading some stories on the couch and just knocked out.”

“It’s okay.” She told him kissing her son’s forehead. “I think he just wanted to spend time with you, he doesn’t stop talking about you since I told him you were his dad.” She said heading through the hall and towards his room.

“Yeah?” He smiled surprised following behind her wanting to know more.

“He babbles then start singing mac, mac, mac.” She laughed lying him in his bed.

“He’s getting so big.” She stated nostalgically. “Thank you for staying with him today.”

“Of course, anytime.” He told her kissing his son goodnight before the headed out the room.

“You’re probably exhausted.” She expressed. “If you want to crash on the couch, I don’t mind.”

“I am.” He admitted through a laughter. “Toddlers are no joke, but I’ll be fine.”

“Okay.” She hummed as they walked towards the front door.

“Riles, I know it’s hard for you because it basically just been you and your mom, but whenever you need me, whenever he needs me.” He paused. “I’ll be here don’t ever hesitate to call.”

“I know that now.” She nodded embracing him. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He swore squeezing her. “Always.”

Chapter Text

As hesitant as Riley was to included Mac in Jack’s life, she couldn’t be more indebted. Becoming a parent isn’t something that comes easy even after months of preparation, it was hard for Riley to adjust, and she knew it wasn’t easy for Mac either. Learning he was a father after years of being gone, and a father to a toddler at that he never once acted like the glorified babysitter. Mac really took into account working around Riley and Jack’s schedule so there wasn’t any big changes Jack or Riley could handle. When Riley and Mac did have to work together, he’d stay with Diane but when they had opposite schedules, they each took and time with their son individually but still made sure one day a week they’d all spend time together. Mac was everything she could have wished for, for Jack and it since it was almost Father’s Day and she wanted to show just how much he meant to them.

“It’s Angus’ first Father’s Day with Jack, you three planning on doing anything special?” Diane conjectured taking a seat at the foot of Jack’s bed. “It was really sweet of him to gift us that spa day for Mother’s Day, and flower arrangements were just gorgeous.” She mentioned. Diane wouldn’t stop boasting about Mac for weeks after his gift to them, her mom adored Mac. She’s and Mac became really close when he and Riley started dating, it was more for her to keep an eye on him at first but after she saw how Mac treated Riley, a bond grew between them.

“It was.” She murmured as she tucked Jack into his bed. “I’ve been trying to think of something to do, maybe invite him over for dinner after he spends some time with Jack. You know he’s not much of a cook and he loves family dinners so I thought we could do that.” Riley shared looking over at her mother. “I was hoping you can make the peanut butter chocolate cake.”

“Of course.” She agreed with a smile. “I’ll go to the store in the morning and buy the ingredients.

“I think he’d love that, and so would Jack.”  She chuckled tickling him causing him to burst into laughter. “Grandma is going to make your favorite cake for your daddy.”

“Mr. Robot birthday?” Jack questioned curiously looking up at his mother.

She gave him a gentle smile, she loved how curious Jack was and couldn’t deny she got his curiosity from Mac. “No, remember last month when we celebrated me being your mommy?”

He nodded.

“Well now it’s your daddy’s turn.” She expressed. “You made us your mommy and daddy and we get to celebrate that.”

He scrunched his face together puzzled. “Surprise for Jack?”

She laughed shaking her head. “You get to hang out with your daddy, and you love being with your daddy.” Ever since she told Jack, Mac was his father she tried her best to refer to Mac as his dad in order for him eventually feel comfortable enough to call him dad.

“Cake for Jack?” He squealed giving his mom a smirk.

Riley gazed over to her mother and shook her head knowing mentioning cake would keep him up the whole night. “Mom?”

“Of course, you can baby.” Diane commented getting up from the bed. “You know the faster you fall asleep the faster you can have cake.” She kissed him goodnight before she headed out the room.

“Also, you have help me make your daddy’s gift tomorrow and you love to paint.” She commented brushing her hand through his curls.

He quickly shut his eyes pulling his blanket over his head. “Night mommy.”

She pulled the blanket back and kissed his temple. “Goodnight Jacky. I love you.” She whispered.

Jack was up earlier than usual, Riley guessed it was from all of the excitement from their conversation the night before. She dragged herself out of bed and set up a little arts and craft table for Jack to make his gift for Mac. “Your daddy’s favorite color is blue.” She mentioned dipping the brush in the paint before handing it over to him before she headed to make breakfast. It was a fight for Riley to get Jack to stop painting and eat his food, they don’t call it the terrible twos for nothing she thought. Within the hour they were on their way to meet Mac at the park to begin Father’s Day, Mac’s suggestion since Jack loved the park. “Your daddy can’t wait to see you.” She expressed unbuckling his car seat. “Are you excited to give him his gift?”

He hummed happily holding tightly onto the wrapped gift. “Mr. Robot daddy, and it daddy day.”

She took his hand in hers and made their way to the playground. “And what are you going to say to your daddy when you see him?”

“Appy…happy…fa..father’s day.” Jack stuttered.

“Good job.” She grinned giving him a high five, before she whooshed him out the car causing him to giggle. She took his hand in hers and walked towards the swings quickly finding Mac. “There he is.” Riley beamed pointing at Mac. “Remember what I told you.” Riley said. Jack ran as fast as his short legs could take him.

“Appy father’s day.” Jack announced proudly handing him over his gift.

Mac’s eyes automatically watered, though Jack didn’t understand the context of what he was saying even hearing him say father to him filled his heart. “Thank you, buddy.” He stated emotionally embracing his son. “You want to help me open it?” He pulled the card taped to it aside as Jack eagerly ripped open the wrapping paper exposing a framed picture of them sleeping on the couch together. “Look at that.” He stated emotionally. “It’s you and me, I love it.” Mac declared kissing the top of his son’s head. “Did you paint this?”

“Hmhm.” He hummed proudly.

“It’s beautiful.” He complimented kissing the top of his head.

“Thank you, Riles.” He smiled pulling her into a hug.

“Happy Father’s Day Mac.” She announced wrapping her arms around him. “Jack couldn’t wait to give you the gift.” She told him as she set him up on the swing. “I’ve never seen him so excited to wrap something. He tried his best but kept ripping the paper so in the end he was my tape holder.” She joked.

“I bet he was a pretty damn good tape holder.” He teased as he watched his son swing back and forth with a huge smile plastered on his face.

“The best.” She answered. “I hope you don’t have any plans for later cause, my mom and I are making you dinner.” She informed him with a nudge.

“Riles, no don’t go through the trouble.” He motioned not wanting her to go out of her way.

“It’s too late, my mom is probably already frosting the cake.” She bribed through a chuckle.

“Fine.” He sighed bowing his head. “Thank you.”

“Of course, you two have fun we’ll see you two later tonight. No backing out.” She warned pointing a finger at him, knowing how Mac could be when it comes to the reciprocation of gifts. “Promise me.” She demanded sticking her pinky out. She knew Mac always kept his promise, he hasn’t broken one yet.

“I promise.” He swore clasping their fingers together.

Riley and Diane ran around the house like two chickens with their heads cut off as they tried to prepare dinner for Mac. They knew he’d be back soon, and they still weren’t done cooking, and Mac always arrived on time for things, except when he had to go to events with Riley because she always ran late. Hence the current panicking she was experiencing, so she was hoping Jack held him up a little bit. The second she placed that last plate on the table she heard the doorbell ring. Parents always complained on how having kids, always made them run late and for that she was presently thankful. It gave her an extra twenty minutes to finish setting up.

“Mommy.” Jack growled in excitement when Riley opened the door.

“Jackson.” She roared back energetically. “Did you have fun today?”

“Hmhm.” He hummed before he raced inside.

“Seems like he had a horrible time.” She teased stepping aside so he can enter.

“I don’t know where he gets all the energy from.” He huffed.

“Me either.” She commented watching as he jumped into his grandmother’s arms. “But I’m sort of jealous.”

“Honestly same, sorry we’re late.” Mac stated as he took his jacket off. “Jack didn’t want to leave the indoor playground I literally had to climb in the tunnels and carrying him out-”

“Did he have a meltdown?”

“Huge meltdown, literally had to throw him over my shoulder and run out the door.” He admitted embarrassedly.

“I love the little toddler with my entire being, but the terrible twos suck.” She stated. “This morning it was a fight to get him to stop painting.”

“No book could have prepared me for that meltdown.” He observed his son, and he clung to his grandmother arms, looking like the sweetest little angel. No one would have ever guessed just thirty minutes ago he was screaming at the top of his lungs just because he didn’t want to leave a germ invested play yard.

“I don’t think anything can prepare us for whats to come Mac.” She smirked as she led him to the kitchen.

“Happy Father’s Day Mac.” Diane greeted pulling Mac in for a hug.

“Thank you.” He paused. “For all of this.” He mentioned observing all the different dishes and little decorations they had around the house. “This is really nice, thank you so much.” He stated appreciatively.

“Of course, you deserve it.” Diane complimented. “Now lets go eat.”

“Dinner, has been amazing.” He told them. “I can’t even remember the last time I had food this good. But really, you guys really didn’t have to go all out like this”

“It’s your first Father’s Day and you’re an amazing dad.” Riley said placing her hand over his. “You deserve every bit of it.”

“I have an amazing kid.” He praised winking towards Jack. Jack tried his best to wink back with no success just batting his eyelashes back at his father causing him to chuckle. “You guys make it easy.”

She gazed into his eyes before interlocking her fingers around his. “You do too.”

He couldn’t remember the last time he held her hand, but he didn’t want to let go. He was so tempted to kiss it and tell her how he couldn’t stop thinking about her and all he wanted was for them to be a family.

“So, who’s ready for dessert?” Diane asked breaking Mac out of his trance. “Chocolate cake, with chocolate chips, and peanut butter frosting.”

“You guys didn’t make my favorite cake?” He questioned with excitement as Diane made her way to the table with the cake.

“It’s also your son’s favorite cake.” Riley told him. “He loves peanut butter.”

“How about we share a slice together?” Mac suggested taking Jack out of his hair chair and placing him on his lap.

After dessert, Mac and Riley cleaned up the kitchen while Diane got Jack ready for bed. Diane’s suggestion, she knew they had a couple things to talk about and she didn’t want them to be interrupted. They cleaned in silence mostly, making small talk here and there about work and how their days have gone but once they were done the headed towards the living room to catch up.

“I never knew how much a holiday really meant until today.” He confessed. “Christmas use to be my favorite holiday, but Father’s Day just beat that out.” He told her. “Thank you for the card by the way, it really meant a lot to me what you said.”

“I meant every single word.” She nodded. “You’re the best dad, and Jack is so happy when he’s with you.” She placed her hand on his leg gave him a small smile. “I’m sorry you found out the way you did, you both deserved to know each other from the second you got back, and I shouldn’t have gotten in the way of that.”

“I understand why you did it.” He disclosed turning to face her keeping their distance minimal. “I just wish I was there from the beginning for you, for him, even for me. There’s a huge part of his life I have no idea about.”

“Do you want to see pictures? My mom made this huge photo album.” She told him grabbing a large photo album from the coffee table.

“I’d love too.” He grinned.

“I pretty sure she captured every single second from the minute I told her I was pregnant to his first year of life.”

“No way.” He said excitedly as he opened the photo album.

“That was my first sonogram.” She told him. “I cried like baby, I wanted you to be there.” She confessed. “I’d knew you be so happy; and that you’d be the best dad.” She spoke. “I finally started to notice a bump late into by third month.” She told him pointing at a picture. “By the sixth month there was no hiding it anymore.”

“Look at you.” He stated gazing over at her. “I can’t believe I missed this.”

She shrugged looking over at him somberly. “I thought you’d only be gone for a couple weeks; I’d at least thought you be here before I gave birth and then you went off-the-grid.”

“Ri-”

“I thought you’d tell me.” She murmured. “You know before going off the grid, we told each other everything. And I promise, I’m no longer angry with you, I just wish things ended up differently.”

“I wanted to tell you, for weeks I thought about how I made a wrong decision by not telling you. But there was a point when it got so dangerous.  I did things I thought I’d never have to do, worked with horrible people. Things I regret, that I hate myself for.” He hesitated. “My life was hanging on a string, I honestly thought I wasn’t going to make it back.” He confessed. “The thought of never seeing you again.” His voice cracked. “Now knowing I have a son; I can’t imagine my life without him.”

She nodded empathetically. “All I’ve ever wanted was for our son to meet you, you were just gone for so long and thought of you leaving for dangerous missions I didn’t want to put him through the possibility of losing you.”

“I understand.” He sighed. “Trust me I finally do.”
She buried her hands in her face and started to cry. “Being without you broke me, I knew that with our jobs anything could happen, but it was fucking hard.” She admitted. “Being pregnant, imagining a world without you-.”

“Riley honey.” He pulled her into his arms laying her on top of him just holding her. She tugged at his shirt sobbing loudly into his chest.

She wrapped her arms around him. “You mean everything to me Mac, but things are different now, Jack needs us. We use to risk our lives so casually, we can’t do that anymore. We have to be there for him.” She swore gazing up at him puffy eyed.

He nodded staring back at her with tears of his own. “I know, I’m starting to understand that maybe the reason my dad left me was because he didn’t want me to get close enough where it would hurt me to lose him, but I’m not my dad I would never choose my job over our son.” He stated intensely. “I promise.”

“I know that now.” She told him sitting back up, she tried her best to wipe away the dried tears with her sleeve smudging a bit of her eyeliner before she wiped away his tears. “We need to stop crying and being happy.” She chuckled. “You’re back and we get to be parents to this beautiful little boy.”

He gave her gloomy smile, knowing her can never fix the hurt she experienced previously the only thing he could do it fix the present. “You’re absolutely right.”

“Plus, I think you’re becoming his favorite, and I’m getting kind of jealous.” She teased nudging him with her knee.

He chuckled. “I’m just a giant toy to him, we both know he loves Diane more than anyone.” He commented grabbing back the book. “I mean look at this photo.” He said placing the photo album in the middle of their laps. “He’s literally staring at her in awe, like he just met his favorite superhero.”

She laughed in agreement. “They love each other the most.”

“You looked stunning.” He commented brushing his fingers over a photo of her at her baby shower.

“Once I reached my eighth month, I don’t think you’d say that the waddle wasn’t cute.” She giggled.

“I disagree.” He muttered. “I’ll always think your gorgeous, I always have.” He said gazing at her. “Even in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit.”  He smirked.

“Mac I need-”

“Mommy.” Jack murmured through the monitor causing them both stand up to check on him. “Hey baby.” Riley greeted picking her son up. “Are you okay?” He nodded before looking back at Mac. “You want to go with daddy?”

It shocked him to hear those words come out of her mouth, it was the first time she has said it around him, and it sounded like his favorite song. His son held his arms out for him. “I love you bud.” He expressed cradling him. “So so much.”

Riley kissed Jack’s temple before resting her head against Mac’s shoulder. “Happy Father’s Day Mac.”

“Thanks for making me dad.” He said kissing her forehead. “It’s the best gift I could ever get.”

“Thanks for being you and being here for us.” She complimented squeezing his waist. “You want to spend some time with me and your daddy?” Riley asked Jack.

Jack nodded, before the headed back to the living room. Jack was glued to Mac as they cuddled on the couch and watched television. Within thirty minutes Jack was back asleep, Mac just snuggled him closer. “I can’t believe I ever lived a life where he wasn’t part of it. It’s only been a couple months but being his dad has been everything I’ve ever wanted.” He confessed resting his head back on the couch.

“Let’s hope we feel the same way when he becomes a teenager.” Riley said as they both burst into laughter. “We didn’t really talk about having kids when we were together, and I experience so much grief not having you here with me in the beginning.” She admitted nervously rubbing her hands together. “But being his mom.” She sighed. “Everything clicked, that gaping hole I had in my chest was overfilled with this little eight-pound baby. I don’t think, I would have made it without him, I’d move galaxies for him.”

“Just tell which one and I’ll be right there with you.” Mac mentioned eyeing her with a smile. “And I guess, we didn’t really talk about kids or our future together. I think working for the Phoenix programmed us to just live day by day because none of us ever knew if we were going to live to see the next day.” He sat quietly for a couple of minutes not knowing if should say what he wanted to say, but he missed so much time from her that he no longer wanted to waste it. “But I did dream this for us. For our future.” He paused. “I’ve never pictured my future with anyone but you.” He confessed gazing at her. They just stared at each other for a while before he spoke again. “But you wanted to tell me something before what was it?” He questioned.

She hesitated. She was nervous to tell him, she didn’t want to hurt his feelings, she didn’t want to ruin their relationship. “I’ve been seeing someone.” She blurted out. “We’ve been seeing each other for a few months, but he hasn’t met Jack yet.” She breathed, eyeing him worried.

He gave her a small smile he couldn’t deny he was disappointed, but she deserves to have a life that didn’t include him especially after all these years. “As long as your happy, I’m happy for you.” He told her. “I’ll always support you.”

She blinked back tears. “Thank you, Mac.” She gestured. “You too.” She hesitated. “Have you?” She asked awkwardly. It would hurt her to see Mac with someone, but she also wanted him to move on and be happy.

“No.” He quickly answered. “Just want to focus on being here for Jack.” Building his relationship with Jack was his priority, he wanted to focus on being the best dad he can be. But he couldn’t imagine himself with anyone but Riley, he had no intention on moving on with anyone but her, but she already has, and Mac will eventually have too also.

“Of course.” She blustered embarrassed. “I would love for you to meet him, I was thinking of inviting him to Jack’s Birthday party in a couple weeks, if you’re okay with Jack meeting him.”

“Uh…sure, yes.” He stated surprised he was asking for her permission. “Why are you asking me if it’s okay?”

“Cause you’re his dad, and you have a right to know who’s around your son.” She expressed through a shrug. “Also, your opinion is really important to me.”

“You’re one of the smartest people I know, I trust you’d have good people around him.” He told her. “You already have.”

“I love you, Mac.” She announced taking ahold of his hand.

“I love you too Riles.” He echoed bringing her hand to his lips and gently kissing it. He was heartbroken but he’d never admit it to her he just wanted to see her happy again.

“Thank you for always being my friend first.” She whispered, kissing his cheek before she cuddled close to him. Tears threatened to escape her eyes, but she wouldn’t let them because it would expose, she was heartbroken too.

Chapter Text

“So, I heard you’re meeting Michael B Junior.” Bozer told him rashly as they finished setting up for Jack’s birthday party.”

“Who?”

“Riley’s little friend.” Bozer mentioned placing some cups and plates on the table.

“I thought his name was Kalei.” Mac stated puzzled. “That’s honestly all I really know about him.”

Bozer shook his head. “He’s apparently a friend of Russ’ and works a similar career to us.” He informed Mac. “Never thought I’d see someone who works in IT with a crazy six pack.”

“Sounds like Riley found a good match.” He muttered. “And how do you even know he has a six pack?”

He sighed. “You have no idea what he looks like do you?”

“Was I supposed to ask Riley to show me a picture?” Mac asked sardonically.

“It’s like Michael B Jordan and Denzel had a kid, he’s so pretty it’s insane.” Bozer described animatedly preparing his best friend. “Like you think your kid is beautiful? Imagine if they have a kid.” He revealed with a shrug.

“You really know how to make guy feel like shit.” Mac grumbled running his finger through his hair uneasily.

“Well get ready to feel like even more shit, cause he’s here.” Bozer warned elbowing Mac, causing his attention to fall towards a tall muscular man with his fingers intertwined in Riley’s. He hoped there was a possibility that Bozer was exaggerating on how good-looking Riley’s boyfriend was since exaggerating was one of Bozer’s specialties. But he wasn’t Bozer described the man perfectly, and he and Riley made a very attractive couple.

Riley’s smile faltered as she made her way towards Mac and Bozer, she was nervous to introduce them to each other Mac has seen her in relationships before and she’s seen him. But that was before their relationship, which there was never an official end to. And now they have a child together which made their relationship even more complicated. “Kalei, you’ve met Bozer and this is Mac, Jack’s dad.”

“Nice to meet you man.” Kalei greeted shaking Mac’s hand. It was firm but not overbearing like he was trying to prove he had Riley over him, but there was definitely a confidence to him, an awareness that Riley was in this with him and there was no competition.

“Yeah, you too.” He stated giving him a slight smile. He hated to admit he was jealous, but the idea of Riley in a relationship with someone else hurts him no matter how much he wanted to be happy for her.

“I’m really excited to meet Jack.” He announced taking ahold of Riley’s hand as he gazed into her eyes.

“Yeah.” She hummed leaning into his embrace. “I’m excited for you to meet him too.”

“He’s in the playhouse with Diana.” He informed them trying his best to be accommodating.

“Thanks.” Riley stated as they walked towards the backyard, as she passed by Mac, she took a hold of his hand as gently squeeze it. He knew it was her way of thanking him, but he didn’t know for exactly what.

“Hey.” Bozer called interrupting him out of his thoughts. “Let’s grab a beer before everyone gets here.”

“Sure.” Mac welcomed.

“Here.” Bozer stated passing over a shot.

“I’m not getting drunk at my son’s birthday.” Mac scolded as he opened the bottle of beer instead.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Bozer probed cautiously taking a sip of his drink.

“There’s nothing really to talk about.” He shrugged. “I was gone for years and didn’t even try to communicate with any of you. I didn’t expect for time to stand still for you guys while I wasn’t here.”

“Doesn’t make it hurt any less.” Bozer mentioned patting Mac on the shoulder.

“No, it doesn’t.” He admitted leaning against the kitchen counter. “But I want Riley to be happy, and if she’s happy with Kalei and Jack likes him, I’ll support it.”

“But Mac-”

“I really don’t want to talk about this anymore.” He stated chugging the rest of his beer. “I’m going outside to celebrate my son’s birthday for the first time ever that’s all that should matter.” He retorted throwing his beer in the recycle bin.

The minute Mac made it out the door, Jack was running towards him at full force. “Daddy.” He squealed his arms spreading open ready to be embrace.

He chuckled scooping his son up in his arms. “Hey buddy.” He grinned kissing his son’s forehead.

“It’s my birthday.” He announced proudly pointing down at his shirt that had a little robot holding on to balloons leaning against the number three.

“The big three.” Mac celebrated. “Your daddy’s big boy.”

“Big boy.” He repeated excitedly pulling Mac into a hug.

“I love you so much Jack.” He mumbled squeezing him close. He promised himself to never miss another birthday again, Jack was his whole world and he planned on being there for him for as long as he can.

“Let’s get a family picture.” Desi suggested pushing Mac and Riley together.

“Jack baby, look at auntie Desi.” Riley insisted pointing at the camera, but Jack was too busy staring down at the cake trying to dig his fingers in it.

“He’s definitely your son.” Mac commented before they both burst out into laughter.

“Jack wrap your arms around mommy and daddy.” Desi suggested as he held on tightly to both their faces. Riley and Mac just looked at each other with huge smiles plastered on their faces.

“Do you think he’s having a good time?” She questioned humorously.

“I think he’s pretty content.” Mac joked before tickling his son. “Right bud?”

Jack let out a loud giggle before he let go of them and begged them to him down, when he saw his grandmother come out with a tray of cookies.

“Like I said your kid.” Mac muttered as Jack ran towards his grandmother.

“Please, I’ve seen you run towards cookies plenty of times.” She retorted eyeing him. “I’m truly surprised you didn’t run right behind him.

“Your mom does make the best cookies.” He declared watching as Jack took a huge bite out of his cookie.

“Point proven, he’s definitely our kid.” She emphasized playfully shoving Mac. “Go get the damn cookie.”

“Hey.” Kalei called embracing Riley.

“Hey.” She grinned wrapping her arms around him. “So what do think of my crazy family so far?”

“They’re great.” He complimented.

“I know Jack can be a little shy, but he’ll warm up to you.” She told him as Jack zoomed passed them making his way to the jumping castle cookie in hand.

“Jack.” Mac called running after him. “You have to eat your cookie first.”

Kalei chuckled. “He keeps you guys busy, huh?”

“You have no idea.” She warned.

“Don’t worry so much, Jack and I will become best friends before you know it.” He assured kissing her temple.

“I know you guys will.” She leaned into his embrace and smiled. “Thanks for coming today.”

“Thanks for letting meet Jack.” He murmured gripping her waist.

It was the first time Riley was introducing him to the whole family, and it unquestionably had her on edge especially with Mac around. But Kalei was a good guy, and she was happy with him she no longer felt like she needed to keep her relationship between just them.

“You’re really going to let this man flirt with your baby mama in front of you at your son’s

birthday party?” Bozer pestered joining Jack and Mac by the jumping castle.

“Riley is not- well she is.” He paused “The mother of my child. But Riley is my-”

“The love of your life, soulmate, eternal flame.”

“Riley isn’t mine Boze.” Mac corrected. “Not anymore.” He said before walking away.

“Couldn’t be more wrong about that.” He muttered. Bozer knew there was still some feelings between Mac and Riley and it was more than just because they have a child together. When they had that mission where Riley was poisoned by the bride’s grandmother and Mac had to create an antidote to save her, was the first time he noticed their feeling towards each other. Mac didn’t leave Riley side the whole night. But then Desi joined the team and Mac got into a relationship with her but knew even then his feelings for Riley didn’t subside. It was Desi that finally made the decision to break it off with Mac for the final time in front of Riley and forced them to confess their feelings to each other. Desi was in full support of their relationship, but it wasn’t until they found David, Desi’s ex-fiancé and now husband were they fully comfortable with finally getting together. There was never any closure with Mac and Riley and Bozer knew they’ll probably never be if they each decide to move on.

Mac sometimes hated the Bozer could read him like a book, but what was he supposed to do shove Kalei aside and beg Riley to take him back. He couldn’t deny watching Kalei wrap his arms around Riley caused some jealousy because that could have been him, that should be him with her and their son as a family. It was everything he’s ever wanted but he gave that all up when he decided to go rouge on a mission and that will be something he’s always going to regret.

“Daddy.” Jack called as he tugged at Mac’s pants.

“Yeah buddy?” He asked squatting down to his level.

“Who’s that?” The little boy questioned looking over at Riley and Kalei who were seated close together in deep conversation.

“That’s mommy’s friend.” He answered. “And he makes your mommy happy.” He stated wanting his son to know he supported Riley and her relationship.

“You make mommy happy.” Jack observed looking over at his father.

“Everyone that’s here makes mommy happy.” He expressed enfolding him in his arms. “Especially you.”

“You make me happy.” Jack warbled grinning from ear to ear.

“And you make me happiest person in the world.” Mac responded kissing his hair. “I love you so much.”

“Hey you two.” Riley greeted kneeling down on the grass. “Guess what Jack?”

“What?” He wondered excitedly.

“It’s time to sing happy birthday and eat some cake.” She told him standing up and reaching out for his hand.

“Yay.” He shouted clapping his hands together. “Come on daddy.” Jack called holding his hands out so he could walk together with his parents.

“You guys are the cutest little family.” Desi commented snapping a picture of them as they made their way to the dessert table.

Riley and Mac eyed each other before quickly turning away. Riley’s gaze fell to Kalei hoping that Desi’s comment didn’t make him uncomfortable, but he just gave her a reassuring smile. Riley has never really talked to Kalei about her relationship with Mac only that he was over seas for work and now starting to build a relationship with Jack but never about her previous relationship with him.

“We’ll all always be family.” Bozer announced standing next to Desi to take some photos. “We can’t break that promise.”

“Always.”  Riley agreed before she looked over at Mac.

Mac nodded. “Always.”

“So, who’s ready to sing happy birthday to my favorite nephew.” Bozer announced as he picked up Jack and spun him around.

“Happy birthday.” Jack insisted as he pointed to his cake.

“You heard the man.” Bozer declared before everyone burst out into song.

“Do you have everything?” Riley questioned as she carried over her sleeping child to Mac’s car.

“I’m pretty sure.” He answered. “But if I don’t, we have everything we need at home.” He promised.

“Did you grab some leftovers?” She asked as she buckled Jack into his chair.

“That’s the first thing your mom put in my bag.” He chuckled.

“Of course, she did.” Riley stated rolling her eyes. “Well, I guess I’ll see you guys Monday morning.” She murmured kissing Jack goodbye.

“Enjoy the rest of the weekend Riles.” Mac winked before he pulled off the driveway.

Riley made her way back to the yard and found Kalei throwing out the rest of the trash. “Ever thought of becoming a garbageman?” Riley teased helping him pick up the rest of the trash.

“I don’t know, I kind of like working in IT, it lead me to meet a pretty amazing woman.” He complimented.

Riley blushed. “I don’t know I have a feeling you’d look really good in a jumpsuit.” She really liked Kalei and enjoyed spending her time with him, but she couldn’t help but feel guilt that she’s moved on from Mac. “Do you want to go for a walk?” She asked throwing the garbage in the pail before heading inside to wash their hands.

“Sure.” He nodded.

He slipped his hand in hers and pulled her close as they walked together. “You know we’ve been dating for a little over six months and I feel like I barley know you.” He commented tenderly, he was intrigue by the mystery behind Riley but he also wished to know more.

“What do you want to know?” She questioned wrapping her arm around his bicep.

“Have you always wanted to be a mom?”

She hummed not really knowing how to answer that question, Riley was never one to think about having kids she always found her future to be uncertain from a very young age. But she decided to answer him truthfully. “No.” She exhaled. “Mac and I never really talked about it, since our job can be so hectic.” Her gaze fell to the floor. “I had the IUD but somehow even with that, Jack wanted to come to this world and now I can’t imagine my life without him.”

Her answer brought a smile to his face. “For what I’ve seen and heard you’re an amazing mom, do you ever think about having other kids?”

“Maybe, if I switch careers.” She paused. “It’s so hard right now with one, sometimes I miss putting him to bed or being with him in the morning. I just don’t want to risk missing anything with Jack or any possible future children.” She expressed releasing some tension.

“I understand.” He said rubbing his thumb over hers. “I’d really like to get to know Jack more, what do you think, you Jack and I have a movie night?”

“I think he’d love that.” She grinned gazing up at him.

His hands cradled her face drawing her in for a kiss. “I love you.” He confessed openly. Being introduced to her family tonight really sealed it for him, he knew he wanted to take his relationship with Riley to the next level if that something she also wanted.

She gave him a small smile before wrapping her arms around his waist and deepening the kiss. “Let’s head back, and maybe I can stay over at your place tonight?” It would the first time in their relationship that Riley has ever stayed over his apartment. Their relationship has been slow paced, and Riley appreciated that Kalei respected her boundaries. He’s never rushed or questioned her about anything and was grateful he worked in a similar career and understood that between work and Jack her schedule could be chaotic.

The vibration of her phone cause her to wake up, it was a facetime call from Mac. So, she rushed out the room trying her best not to wake Kalei. “Hey.” She murmured when she saw Mac on the other end. “Everything alright?”

“Yeah, sorry if we woke you, he just really wanted to speak to you.” Mac told her passing over the phone to Jack.

“Morning Mommy.” Jack shouted enthusiastically.

“Morning baby.” She snickered. “Are you having fun with daddy?”

Jack nodded showing her a new toy he was playing with. “New robot.”

“My aunt Gwen sent him over a birthday gift.” Mac informed her as he sat on the floor and placed Jack on his lap. “He doesn’t even care for the one I made anymore.” He chuckled.

“I highly doubt that he brings that thing everywhere.” Riley said taking a seat on the couch.

Mac noticed Riley’s surroundings were unfamiliar to him and figured she stayed at Kalei’s house, another pang of jealously ran through him and he hated it.

“I don’t know, she also made this one by hand and I have to admit it’s way cooler than mine.” He joked observing the toy.

“Good morning, babe.” He heard a familiar voice call, she beamed from ear to ear when he came over to kiss her.

“Morning, I’m just talking to Jack and Mac.” She voiced cheerfully.

“Good morning, Mac and Jack.” Kalei waved. “What are you two up to today?”

“You want to tell Kalei what we’re doing today bud?” Mac asked him.

“We’re going to the farm.” Jack said excitedly throwing his hands in the air. “I see cows.”

“Are cows your favorite animal?” Kalei asked grateful that Jack was getting comfortable enough to have a conversation with him.

“Mhm.” He hummed happily. “They’re so big and soft, I like giving them food.”

“Sounds like you’re going to have the best day with your dad.” Kalei celebrated.

“Dad my best friend.” He told Kalei proudly looking up at Mac.

“That’s awesome, your dad must be really cool.” Kalei mentioned looking over at Mac.

“I don’t know, I think he’s just saying that cause he’s stuck with me.” He joked kissing the top of Jack’s head.

“Mac’s the best, and the greatest dad.” Riley praised.

“Thanks, Riles.” Mac said bashfully. “I should let you guys go; we should probably start getting ready since it takes forever to leave the house when you have a toddler.

Riley chuckled. “Very true, have fun. I love you guys.”

“Love you too mommy, see you tomorrow.” Jack squealed before he hung up the phone, not giving Mac a chance to say his goodbyes.

“See Jack is already starting to love you.” She commented gazing over at Kalei.

“Good, because I was really close to bribing him with some money.” He joked pulling her on to his lap.

“You’re an idiot.” She grinned wrapping her arms around him.

“I’m happy you’re here.” He confessed caressing her thighs.

“Me too.” She stated kissing him. “We have the rest of the day together, what do you want to do?”

“So many things.” He flirted lying her back on the couch and climbing on top of her.

“Do tell.” She seduced tangling her legs in his.

As Mac got Jack’s bag ready to take him to the farm, he could stop thinking about Riley and how happy she looked he’s never really seen her like that with any of the guys she dated before him. She knew introducing Jack to Kalei was a big step in their relationship, but it must be getting really serious between them, and Mac couldn’t help but feel heartbroken. He knew their lives would move on without him, but he just never thought it was going to hurt this bad. “I’m happy for Riley.” He muttered to himself. “She deserves this.” He was hoping that the more he tried to convince himself the easier it would get.

Chapter Text

“I’m really happy I got to spend most of the weekend with you.” Riley confessed through a smile, as that sat together in Kalei’s living room eating take-out.

“Yeah me too.” He grinned pulling her in for a kiss. “I’m also happy I got to meet Jack, he’s a really cute kid.”

“I mean he is my kid, why would he be anything else but cute.” She joked taking bite of her food.

He shrugged in agreement. “I mean you’re not wrong, you’re gorgeous.”

Riley’s gaze dropped blushing from his comment.

He lifted her chin up so he’d stare at her. “And so intelligent and kind.”

She placed her food on the coffee table taking ahold of his face and kissed him. His compliments overwhelmed her at times. When he confessed, he loved her the night before, she didn’t know what to say. She cared a lot for Kalei and had strong feelings, but she wasn’t sure if she could say she was in love with him. “You’re really sweet and insanely handsome.” She grinned brushing her thumbs over his cheeks.  “Thank you for being patient with me.” She acknowledged before kissing him again.

“Always.” He promised.

Mac tried his best to be present during his time on the farm with Jack, but he couldn’t stop thinking about how one mission has ruined his entire life. Because of his choices he’s lost Riley, lost years with his son and no how severe PTSD. He thought that after months of being back things would get easier but see Riley with someone else intensifies all the hurt.

“Daddy look, big cow.” Jack shouted excitedly.

“Yeah buddy, did you know they can chew up to eight hours a day.” He informed him disrupting him from his thoughts. Mac promised he’d be there for Jack, and that’s a promise he’ll never break if he had to go to more therapy then so be it. He’s going to be the best father he can be for his son and a good coparent for Riley, he needed to get over his own feelings.

“So much food.” He blustered.

“Yes.” Mac chuckled. “They eat a lot of grass.”

“Can I eat grass?” Jack asked wide-eyed and wonderous.

“Yes, you can eat some types of grass.” He answered. “You probably already have.”

Jack ripped up a couple blades of grass and shoved it in his mouth, but once he tasted the grass, he quickly spit it out. “Yucky.”

Mac chuckled. “It’s not supposed to taste good bud.”

“Cows should eat pancakes.” He demanded.

“Cows can’t eat pancakes; they’ll get tummy aches.”

“Can we have pancakes?” He asked excitedly.

“We had pancakes this morning bud.” He reminded his son through a chuckle.

“Okay.” He pouted.

“Come on, I want to show you my favorite animal.” He grinned placing him on top of his shoulders.

“Mama.” Jack cheered as he ran towards her and jumped into her arms. “I wish you came to the farm; I missed you.”

“I missed you too baby.” She squeezed him tightly kissing his temple before her eyes fell to Mac. He looked exhausted like he hasn’t slept in days, Jack seemed to be fine. They normally would communicate to each other if Jack was sick or having a hard time sleeping but he never reached out she wondered what was keeping him up.

“How was your weekend?” Mac blustered nervously, putting his hands in his pocket.

“It was great.” She nodded giving him a small smile. “Thanks for asking.”

“How was yours, Jack kept you busy?” She asked in hopes she’d get some clue of what caused his exhaustion.

“It was good, we went to the farm as you know.” He started rocking back and forth on his toes awkwardly. “We did some painting and went to the park, so yeah you could say we were busy.”

“Great.” She gave him a small smile before looking over at Jack. “Sounds like you had a lot of fun with your dad.”

“So much fun.” He celebrated.

“I should bring him inside my mom is dying to see him.” She announced.

“Right, I’ll see you tomorrow bud.” He kissed his forehead whispering something in his ear to make him giggle. “I love you.”

“I love you daddy.”

“I’ll see you at work Riles.”  He murmured before he headed towards his car.

“Thanks for taking him to the farm, he didn’t stop talking about it yesterday.” She murmured taking her gear out her bag.

“He has a new obsession with cows I’m surprised he didn’t bring his new stuffed animal to your place.” He informed her.

“I don’t need any more toys in my house.” She groaned.

“Noted.” He chuckled looking over some notes for their next mission. “Kalei is really nice, Jack really liked him and you’re happy.” He stated making conversation. “I’m glad everything worked out.”

“Yeah, me too, he’s great.” She murmured taking a seat next to him. “Are you ready for our mission tonight.”

“Lack of sleep, money laundering assholes, it’s going to be the best night ever.” He complained scrolling down the screen.

“When was the last time, we actually got to go on a mission together.” She mentioned. “It will be just like old times.” She celebrated trying to cheer him up.

“It has been a while.” He mentioned.

Later in the afternoon they were both in the war room, as Mattie informed them of their mission.  “It’s just you two tonight.” She told them. Mattie rarely sent them on missions together, unless both of their expertise were needed for the mission.  “This should be a quick and easy mission; you should be in and out. Mac you’re a very wealthy sports agent and Riley is a sports therapist, you two are business partners on the hunt for some rookie baseball players that are looking to get MLB contracts.” She told them. “These other sport agents.” She stated sarcastically. “Aren’t the purest of agents and are looking to deceit these young hopeful players into corrupt binding contracts.”

“And we’re there for?” Riley wondered. “We can’t really contract them into our nonexistent baseball team.”

“That is true.” Mac added.

“Let’s just say I know a guy.” Mattie notified them artfully. “You’re up in ten.”

Thanks to The Phoenix Mac and Riley were able to get all the rookie players offers they couldn’t refuse, leaving the fraud sports agents without any players. Like Mattie promised the mission was quick and easy and they headed back to the Airbnb they left their gear in.

“We did it.” Riley celebrated giving Mac a high-five.

“We still got it.” He teased grabbing his bag.

“I’m just going to change out of this before we head to the airport.” Riley told him before heading to the bathroom.

“I’ll be here.” He stated putting away their supplies into their bags. Once he finished packing their bags and went to set them by the door, he heard a car swiftly pull up before they were barraged by bullets. Mac threw himself to the ground trying his best to make it to Riley as fast as he could.

“Riles.” He screams in a panic. “Riley.” He shrieked when he noticed bullet holes on the bathroom door. He quickly stood up rushing into the bathroom pulling her into the corner of the shower shielding her with his body.

“I’m okay, I’m okay.” She murmured ardently when the bullets finally stopped. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah I’m-” He stammered before collapsing to the floor.

“Mac.” Riley yells urgently. “You’re bleeding.” She tells him as his lower body starts to drench in blood.

“I- I didn’t realize-” His pulse swiftly starts to slow, and his eyes roll back.

“Mac.” She shouted desperately. “Mac no.” She echoed searching for her phone frantically. “Stay with me okay.” She begged putting pressure on his wound. “Don’t leave me.” She sobbed. “Baby, please don’t leave us, we just got you back. We need you.” She pleaded caressing his face. “We need you.”

The team was quickly alerted, and The Phoenix truck appeared minutes later to take Mac the nearest hospital. Riley never left his side on the car ride there even when the pulled him on the stretcher she was racing to be with him. Seconds after entering the hospital he was declared dead and was rushed into a room, Riley just steps behind them.

“Mam, you can’t be here right now.” The warned her.

“Please no.” She pleaded pulling herself away from them.

“Mam, you’re bleeding you need to get some medical attention.” Another nurse told her.

“I’m fine.” She shouted heatedly.

“Let’s just bandage your arm.” The woman gently suggested. “I can’t leave him.” She howled.

“They’re going to do everything in their power to make sure he’s okay.” The woman promised taking a hold of Riley’s hand.

“I just want to be with him, please don’t take me away.” She sobbed.

Soon after another nurse quickly came out. “He’s still alive but we’re taking him to emergency surgery.” She informed Riley. “Please let yourself get some medical attention.”

A bullet grazed Riley’s arm, she let them stitch her up and bandage her arm but refused all other medical attention before she headed to the waiting room and waited to hear some news about Mac. She waited for what felt like an eternity, pacing back and forth in the waiting area, before she received a call from Kalei. “Hey babe.” Kalei greeted through the phone. “Is everything alright?” He asked when he noticed her puffy eyes.

“There was an accident during our mission.” She whispered honestly.

“Are you okay? Where are you I can-” Kaeli stated franticly.

“I’m fine, Mac’s hurt.” She stated emotionally. “They had to resuscitate him.” She told him as years rolled down her cheeks. “He’s in surgery right now.” She cried. “I don’t know if he’s going to make it.”

“What can I do?” He yearned sadly feeling helpless he couldn’t be with her.

She shrugged not really knowing what to do or say. “There’s nothing we can do.”

“Whatever you both need please just let me know.” He told her supporting. “I’m here for you, for Jack I’ll do anything.” He swore.

“Thank you.” She hummed giving him a small smile.

“Riley Davis?” A doctor called

“Hey, I’ll call you back soon.” She stated before rushing towards the doctor.

“Okay I love-” He started to say before the screen went dark, it seemed that she forgot to hang up before putting her phone in her pocket.

“Are you, Mr. Macgyver’s wife?” The doctor asked her.

Without hesitation she answered. “Yes, I’m his wife.”

Kalei couldn’t deny hearing it broke his heart, he didn’t even know they were once married or somehow were still married. As broken hearted as he might have felt he didn’t want to invade their privacy, so he hung up.

“Your husband is okay.” The doctor told her. “He had a couple bullets lodged on his side. He has a couple broken ribs and a pierced lung; it looks like two of the bullets went through his back, but it caused no damage to his vertebrae.”

Riley just nodded anxiously.

“He has been responding well to the blood transfusion, but we have to keep him in the ICU for examination.” He informed her. “We’re setting up the room now and you should be able to see him within the next hour.”

“Thank you.” Riley stated emotionally.

Riley couldn’t keep her eyes off the heart monitor watching it beep steadily as Mac slept in front of her. He looked helpless. She’s never seen him so frail and it pained her to see him like that.  “Hey.” He mumbled sorely. “You, okay?” He questioned, from what he remembered she seemed okay after the raid, but he could tell that she’d been crying and hadn’t slept. He was worried that she might ended up hurt.

“You’re asking me if I’m, okay?” She stated wide-eyed. “You’re the one in a hospital bed.” Her eyes scanned him up and down before she started sobbing.

“Riles.” He breathed taking ahold of her hand. “I’m alright.”

“You lost so much blood.” She informed him through tears. “You had a blood transfusion.” She paused. “Your heart stopped beating.”

“I’m still here Riles; I’m not going anywhere.” He swore.

“We have to be more careful.” She pleaded as her eyes bore into his. “We need to make it home to our son.” She declared exhaustedly resting her head against the bed.

“We will, I promise we always will.” He stated weakly.

Two days later

It was late and they just got to the hospital in L.A., she waited until he was asleep before she slipped out leaving him a note that’d she’d be back, and just wanted to check on Jack. She called a taxi and got home right before Jack’s bedtime. When he rushed into her arms every traumatic moment from the past couple days disappeared.

“I missed you mommy.” He told her squeezing her with all his might. “You work mommy?”

“I missed you too baby, yes I’ve been working.” She murmured peppering him with kisses. “I’m here to get you ready for bed maybe we could read a couple of stories.”

“Come on.” He stated taking ahold of her hand and rushing to his room.

He was so excited to be with her after being away from her for almost four days, that’s the longest they’ve been apart, and she didn’t think she could go another second without seeing him. When he mentioned how much he missed Mac her heart broke. She didn’t tell him about the accident all she did was assure him he’ll see him soon. By the time he fell asleep his arms were wrapped around her tightly not wanting to let her go. She brushed his curls away from his face and kissed his temple before lying him on his bed. “I love you so much Jack.”

“Baby girl.” Diane called when she heard him come out of Jack’s room. “I know you have to head back soon, I packed you some food and some clothes.”

“Thanks mom.” She mumbled as she pulled her into a hug.

“Everything is going to be alright.” She secured running her fingers through Riley’s hair letting her breakdown. She knew Riley had a strong exterior, but she didn’t want her to keep holding it in.

“I don’t think I can do this anymore.” She revealed to her mother gravely. “This is what I was afraid of, we’re always so careful on missions and we rarely go together anymore.” She informed her mother through tears. “It wasn’t supposed to end like this it was supposed to be in and out but somehow they found us, we didn’t know they were armed.” Her cries started becoming more desperate. “We could have lost him. Jack would have lost his father, the father he loves so much. How would I explain that? How would I fill that void?”

“Baby girl.” Diane comforted her bringing her to the couch. “He’s alright, just think about that he survived you didn’t lose him; Jack didn’t lose him he is still here.”

“He almost died.” She paused. “He did die.” She cried out. “I can’t do this again.” She sobbed resting her head on her mom’s lap releasing all the stress from the past couple days.

“Riles you don’t have to be here, I’m fine.” Mac told her when she made it back to his room with her night bag in hand.

“I want to be here.” She expressed earnestly.

“How’s Jack?” Hoping he wasn’t spending the last couple days worried about them.

“He’s okay, he misses you.” She stated honestly, resting on the small couch in the corner of the room.

He frowned not really knowing where to start. “I’m so sorry Riles.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry about, we didn’t know they were armed.” She responded shortly.

“I should have known, I was careless.” He muttered trying to catch her gaze.

“Mac it isn’t anyone’s fault, all that matter is that you’re okay and Jack still has his father.” She told wrapping herself in a blanket. “We should get some rest.”

The next morning, the doctor’s informed Mac he was being discharged later that afternoon but would need at least two weeks to recover and a month before he can start doing his regular activities. Riley already planned to stay with Mac until he recovered, and though Mac refused she insisted until he finally gave up the fight. She was nervous to let Kaeli know but out of the respect of their relationship she wanted him to know sooner than later.

While Bozer, Leanna and Desi helped Mac settle down back home she went to visit Kaeli. “Hey Jack and I are going to be staying at Mac’s for a bit until he recovers.” She murmured in hopes he wouldn’t get angry.

“Okay.” He sighed.

“Are you upset?”

He shook his head. “I understand why you’re doing it and I trust and respect your decision, I just-” He paused. “Don’t love the idea.”

“I know.” She murmured pulling him in for a kiss. “But I should be back home within two weeks.” She assured him. “Once he finishes taking all of his medication and is all set with his physical therapy, I’m all yours.” She assured rubbing the back of his neck.

“You promise?” He smirked pulling her on to his lap.

“We’ll Facetime every night.” She grinned wrapping her arms around his shoulders. “Thank you for respecting my decision.”

“Thank you, for letting me know.” He groaned before pecking her lips.

Before she headed back to Mac’s she went to pick up Jack, she planned on spending the next two weeks with all three of them together and though it worried her that Jack may get accustomed to all three of them living together she rather take the risk than not having him with them at all.

“Daddy.” Jack shrieked in excitement trying to rush to Mac’s side.

“Jack, baby.” Riley started before leading him to the couch where Mac rested. “Be gentle with your dad he’s hurt okay.”

“Daddy, you got a boo boo?” He asked wide-eyed taking a hold of his face.

“It’s just a little booboo, it doesn’t hurt to bad.” He informed his son, trying his best not to worry him.

“Can I see?”

“I have a band-aid on it.” He informed him. “Maybe I can show you once it’s all better.” He didn’t really know how to explain to his three-year-old son what happened, and he hoped that he’d eventually just stop probing.

They decided on pizza and Jack’s favorite movie, though he asked Mac about the bandages on his body and if they hurt, he didn’t really ask anything further which relieved Mac and Riley. “I’m going to put him to bed.” She whispered gently pulling him off the couch. “Did you want anything to drink?” She asked as she headed to the kitchen.

“I should probably get up I’ve been sitting for hours.” He told her slowly getting up from the couch.

“Let me-”

“I’m okay.” He stated quickly making his way towards the kitchen.

“I was thinking about making tea.” She told him grabbing some mugs from the cabinet.

“Did you get that on the mission?” Mac questioned eyeing the massive bruises on her side when her shirt lifted as she grabbed the mugs.

“I’m fine.” She muttered placing the mugs on the cabinet.

He gently raised her shirt and noticed that the bruise covered most of abdomen and some of her back. “Did you get yourself checked out?”

“If I had internal bleeding, I wouldn’t be here right now so I’m fine.” She told him walking past him.

He caught her by her arm and frowned. “Please talk to me.” He begged.

“I’ve had worse, these bruises are nothing, you’re the one we need to be worried about.” She stated emotionally.

He pulled her into his arms wrapping an arm around her shoulder. “This happened to both of us not just me.” He murmured. “Let me take care of you too.” He told her kissing her temple.

She sighed leaning into his embrace gently wrapping her arm around the side that wasn’t injured. “Okay.” She whispered resting her head against his shoulder.

“That kid sleeping in that room over there needs both of us, we have to take care of each other.” He proposed gazing down at her. “When was the last time you iced your ribs?”

“I haven’t.” She stated honestly.

“Well, it’s starting today.” He grabbed a bag filling it with ice before taking ahold of her hand and leading her to the couch.

“What happened?”

“When the bullet grazed my arm, I fell against the sink I hit my side pretty hard but I’m okay, I promise.” She stated locking her eyes with his.

“Okay.” He murmured not wanting to agitate her. “I kind of need you to do this coparenting thing.” He joked trying to lighten the mood. “I don’t think I’d be able to do it with just Bozer.”

“Same.” She giggled.

“I love you Riles.” He avowed brushing his hand through her curls.

“I love you too.”

For an entire two weeks Riley crashed at Mac’s in Jack’s room. For the first week the worked-on projects from Mac’s house, she helped him with dinner, cleaning up the house, they’ve lived together as friends before so they were comfortable, they both just hope it wasn’t something Jack would get used to it.

“Do we all live together now?” Jack questioned over breakfast.

“No baby.” Riley quickly answered. “Mommy is helping daddy until he feels all better.”

“Can grandma live here too?”

The enthusiasm in his voice broke Riley’s heart, sometimes she dreamed of all of them together, but she has learned to accept it as it is. “Maybe after breakfast we can go visit grandma.” Riley proposed. “Once uncle Bozer comes in the afternoon, we’ll go see grandma.”

“Riles, I’m fine you don’t have to wait for Boze, I’m feeling a lot better.” He stated as he hobbled towards the medicine cabinet.

“These medications can have some serious side effects.” She reminded him passing him over some water. “I’m not leaving you alone.”

“He missed you.” Riley chuckled telling her mom. “Bozer is over, so Mac isn’t alone.”

“Can I stay with grandma?”

“You don’t want to be with daddy, uncle Bozer and I?” She asked surprised since he loved being with Mac and Bozer.

“Daddy can’t play.” Jack murmured sadly.

“It’s okay.” Diane told her. “I’ll take him out for bit and bring him back for bedtime.

“Okay.” Riley murmured before pulling her in for a hug. “Thanks mom.”

“No problem, I hope you’re taking care of yourself.” She demanded.

“Yes, I swear I am.” She answered as she made her way to her car. “Mac makes sure of it.”

“Good. Tell Mac I love him and if he needs anything, I’m just a call away.” She assured.

“I’m pretty sure he knows since you call us at least three times a day.” She reminded her mother through a chuckle. “I’ll see you later mom.”

“I love you, my Riley.”

“I love you too.”

“How are you healing?”

“I’m better thanks to Riley.” He informed Bozer.

“So you guys have been staying together, how’s that been?”

“It’s been good, we just hope Jack transitions well when he has to go back home.”

“Hey, I’m back.” They heard Riley call from the kitchen. “Jack wanted to stay with my mom, so I guess it’s just us tonight.”

“The real question is, will you two transition well after all this?” Bozer disputed placing his hand on Mac’s shoulder.

“She’s in a relationship and she’s happy.” He answered annoyed with himself for even entertaining Bozer’s antics.

“Didn’t you say you remember her calling you baby before passing out.” He whispered when he heard her slowly come up the stairs.

“I could have been wrong, maybe I was hallucinating.” He spat lowly regretting even telling Bozer what he heard.

“I brought takeout.” She announced when she made it to the balcony, she placed the bag on the picnic table and looked over and Bozer who was eyeing her with a smirk on his face. “What were you two talking about?”

“Oh, just Mac’s sudden death experience.” Bozer said nonchalantly.

“You’re an ass.” Riley and Mac stated in unison before falling into a fit of laughter.

“Ow.” Mac complained placing his hand on his side where his wound was located.

Riley looked over towards Mac worriedly “You okay?” She questioned rushing to his side lifting his shirt to check the wound. “It’s bleeding, we need to clean it up.”

“Boze, can you get the first aid kit that’s in the kitchen closet? There are also some sterile pads in my bag if you can bring those too.” Riley implored looking back at him anxiously. “One of the stitches opened.”

“Riles.” Mac gently lifted her chin up gazing down at her fretful eyes. “I’m alright I promise.” He assured caressing her cheek.

“Just let me stitch it back up.” She insisted leaning into his embrace. “I don’t want it to get infected.”

“Okay.” He murmured. “I appreciate you for helping me.”

“Of course.”

“Found it.” Bozer announced breaking the little bubble Mac and Riley were in.

“Thanks.” Riley murmured before she sterilized the tools. “This should be quick and painless since it’s just one.” All her concentration went into making sure Mac’s injury was clean and sutured in ordered for it to heal quickly. “All done.” She told him taking off her gloves.

“Thanks Riles, don’t where I’d be without you.”

“Ditto.” She smiled.

“So are we going to have any of this takeout or are we just going to let it get cold.” Bozer complained. He could no longer take the slow burn happening between them it was obvious they were still in love with each other, and Bozer can no longer stand watching them torture themselves over it.

Chapter Text

“What if he hates school?”  She questioned as she packed Jack’s bag it was his first day of preschool and Riley wasn’t ready at all to send him away.

“Ri.” Her mom reprimanded. “He’s going to be fine.”

“I think Riles, is the one that isn’t going to be fine.” Mac teased as he filled his lunchbox. “Jack loved meeting his teachers and the other students when we visited.”

“Yes, because it was only a couple minutes not half a day.” She pouted as she finished finger curling his hair.

“Once you take off those headphones you better get it together.” Diane demanded kissing the top of her daughter’s head. “He can’t see you like this he’ll get worried.”

“I know.” She pouted before taking a breath and taking off his headphones.

“Mommy, I didn’t finish my story.” Jack complained.

“I know baby, but it’s time to go to school you can finish your story later.” She promised kissing his forehead.

“Let me get a picture of you three.” Diane insisted pushing them altogether in the kitchen. “Say first day of school.” She cheered as Jack shouted it out the loudest. “Okay, now get out of here before you’re late.”

“I’m so excited to go to school.” Jack celebrated clapping his hands together as they drove in the car today.

“We’re so excited for you baby.” Riley murmured looking back at him watching him as he swung his legs back and forth enthusiastically.

“We’re here.” Mac announced as he parked the car.

“Yay.” Jack squealed.

“Mommy and Daddy will be back in a couple of hours to pick you up.” Riley assured eyeing her son who was barely even listening too eager to sit with his classmates.

“Have a good day buddy, be a good listener.” Mac stated kissing his cheek.

“You did great.” Mac told her wrapping his arm around her as they walked out the school and towards the car.

“Thanks.” She chuckled through tears wiping them away resting her head on his shoulder. Once they were in parking lot she felt his breath hitch like he was trying to hold something in. “Hey, you, okay?” She questioned looking up at him.

He just shook his head emotionally wordless not knowing how to process his thoughts leaning against the car in defeat.

“Mac.” She whispered embracing him resting her head against his chest. “Just breathe.”

“I’m just glad I’m here, with you.” He wept. “That I got to experience this, taking him to school, being there on his first day. I didn’t miss it.”

She embraced him tighter looking up at him with tears in her eyes, she didn’t think about the emotional toll this would bring Mac. “I’m so happy you’re here too.” She expressed kissing his chest. When they were together, she’d always kiss his chest whenever he was overthinking or worried or going through a rough time it’d bring him down. Sometimes old habits die hard.

He wrapped his arms around her shoulder kissing the top of her head. “Thank you.” He sighed it closing his eyes, taking in this time. Selfishly he took this moment as his, she was his, they were a regular family, they were together, this was daily. Though it wasn’t, they’ll never have the relationship they once had. Living with Riley and Jack the past couple weeks brought him so much joy and knowing it was all about to be over broke it his heart. Knowing that this was something he could have had hurt him. Sometimes there were small glimpses, of what could have been. But that was it, tiny little moments. And just when he feels like he’s ready to accept it will never be the same again she kisses his chest and gazes up him like she use to, like her heart was still his.

She caressed his back giving him a small smile. “You know if we just stay here, it will be time for pick up.”

“Would that be such a bad thing.” Mac suggested.

“Who’s the one having trouble letting go now.” She teased taking ahold of his hand. “Let’s go home.” There’s a small awkward silence she knew it wasn’t her home it wasn’t their home not anymore. It was his but spending the past couple weeks with him, with Jack as a family she enjoyed every single moment of it.

“I’m going to miss having you as a roommate. Living with other adults is nice.” He teased. “As much as I love our child, there’s only so much you can talk to a toddler about. Though are morning talks about the amount of syrup that goes on food can be quite enlightening.” He joked as he watched her pack her bag.

She giggled rolling her eyes. “You still have me until the end of the week.” She enlightened. “I thought he’d get over his pancake and waffle phase by now.”

“Still going strong.” He answered. “And Riles, you don’t have to.” He stated sincerely. “You stayed for two extra weeks. I’m completely recovered now.”

“I don’t mind.” She murmured. “I kind of miss my old room, there’s a lot of memories I have in there.”

2018

“Are you sure you want to live with me?” Mac question as he wrapped his arms around her waist.

“I already do.” She smirked draping her arms around his shoulders.

“I mean in my room.” He chuckled brushing his nose against her.

“I mean I basically do live in your room.” She beamed. “I spend every night there.” She flirted.

“I know how you’re not much of a morning person and I am, and how I sometimes talk in my sleep and I-”

“Mac, babe.” She murmured brushing her finger over his lips. “I want to go to sleep and wake up to you every morning even if I might regret it some days.” She giggled. “I love you. I love everything about you.” She stated kissing his chest.

“Well just know the room is here if you ever do get tired of me.” He grinned gazing into her eyes. “I won’t be offended.”

“I don’t think that could ever happen.” She seduced pushing him on to her mattress. “But I think we should get one last good use of this one since it’s not going to be used as much.”

“Okay.” He whispered against her lips. “I love you Riles.”

“I love you too Mac, always. My heart will always be yours.” She promised.

“My heart always has been and always will be yours Riley Davis.” He stated passionately pulling her in for a kiss.

Just then her phone wrong breaking her out of her daze. “It’s Kalei.”

“I’ll be up on the balcony if you need me.” He stated giving her a somber smile.

“Hey.” She greeted when she found him on the bench looking out towards the sky.

“Hey.” He echoed. “How’s Kalei?” He wondered honestly. Mac liked Kalei he was kind to his son and towards Riley he’s always been respectful of his relationship with Riley and though it pained him that Riley was with another man he was grateful she was with someone like Kalei.

“He’s good.” She sighed sitting next to him. “He was just asking me about Jack, and how drop off went and how you were feeling.”

He nodded. “He’s a good guy Riles, I’m glad you found him.”

“Yeah.” She hummed.

They sat up in the balcony together talking, as they waited until it was time to pick up Jack. They laughed and bickered like they use to when they were the best of friends. When were stuck together during quarantine, when Aubrey broke things off and Riley had nowhere to go, all the nights they spent here after missions just hanging out, it was their safe haven a constant.

“You know I tried to live here while you were gone, to make this our home for Jack and me, waiting for you to come back.” She confessed. “It was really hard, everything in here reminded me of you. And sometimes it’s what I wanted, because it’s felt like you were here. Sometimes I’d just sit in your closet and close my eyes because it smelled like you but after a while it faded and I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t feel you anymore. I thought I lost you and being in a place that was a constant reminder of what I lost I couldn’t be here anymore.”

“Riles.”

“Please don’t feel guilty Mac.” She implored. “I’m just telling you this because, as much as I pushed you away when you first got back I was so relieved you were alive that I was able to see you again that our son had his father.” She stated emotionally. “When I thought we lost you again during that mission.” She paused. “I don’t think I would have ever been able to recover if we did.” She hiccupped. “We just got you back, I didn’t know what I would tell Jack. How I’d be able to tell him.”

As much as he wanted to comfort her, he knew she wasn’t done saying what she needed to say. And he was determined to listen and take it all in.

“I don’t think either of us should be out in the field anymore, unless it’s an absolute emergency.” She told him unswervingly. “It’s not either you or I.” She demanded. “I don’t want Jack to at least have one of us I want him to have both of us.”

He nodded. He couldn’t deny it was something that was going to be a big change for him, but he knew it was the right thing to do for her and their son. “Okay.”

“I know it’s going to take a bit to get use to more for you, since I’ve been working less and less out in the field.” She told him somberly. “This isn’t an ultimatum, it’s completely your choice. But after our last mission I’ve been thinking about it a lot. You don’t have to decide today just take your time.”

He shook his head in agreement. “I think you’re right; we’ve been doing this for over a decade now I think it’s time we step back there are so many new recruits they can handle it.” He expressed brushing his fingers through his hair. “It’s going to be hard, but I know it’s going to be worth it. Especially, for Jack, he deserves us to be there for him as much as we can.”

“Are you sure?” She almost pleaded gazing into his eyes.

“Yes, I’m positive.” He promised. “I’d do anything for Jack, I do anything for you.”

She quickly wiped her tears away and jumped into his arms. “Thank you, Mac.”

He chuckled hugging her tighter. “You don’t think Jack will start getting sick of us, now that he’s going to be seeing us more?”

“Hopefully not until he becomes a teenager.” She joked. “We should probably head over to the Phoenix and talk to Matty before we go pick him up.”

“Hey Matty, can Mac and I speak to you about something?” She asked apprehensively rubbing her hands together as they walked into her office.

“It’s going to be fine.” He whispered into her ear grabbing ahold of her hands.

“Make it fast, I have to head out in ten.” She stated eyeing them.

“Mac and I were talking, and we decided that we no longer want to work out in the field we wanted to do more internal work unless it’s an emergency we’d rather just help out from the Phoenix.” She expressed.

“We both want to be as committed as we can to Jack, he’s our main priority.” Mac started. “But we love our jobs we love our team but us being here for Jack it’s what’s more important.”

“Okay.” Matty shrugged.

“Wait that’s it just, okay?” Mac questioned surprised.

“Yes blonde, I love baby blonde and I’d do anything for him even if that means losing two of my best field workers. Honestly, I’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner.”

“Thank you Matty.” Riley beamed. “This really means a lot to us.”

“I’ll see you two tomorrow.” Matty winked.

“Mommy, Daddy.” Jack shouted running towards them at full force.

Riley squatted down catching him when he ran into her arms. “Hey baby, how was school?”

“Fun, I made new friends.” He stated dynamically. “I met another Jack like me.”

“That sounds great buddy.” Mac celebrated kissing the top of head. “Mommy and I really missed you today.”

“Me too.” Jack murmured squeezing Riley reaching his hand out for his dad grouping them in a hug together. “I love you.”

“We love you too baby.” Riley stated emotionally squeezing them tighter.

3 Days Later

“Jack, mommy and I will are going to drop you off at school tomorrow but then mommy is going to pick you up and you two are going to sleep back at your grandma’s.” Mac informed him. “I have to go to work, but I’ll see you on Saturday.”

“Me and mommy come back?” Jack questioned.

“Mommy is going to stay back at grandma’s, it’s just going to be you and me.” Mac explained brokenheartedly. As much as he wished to give Jack the typical happy little family, something he never got to experience either the consequences of his actions caused the same dynamic to be passed down to his son.

“But I want mommy to come.” He pouted.

“Mommy can visit anytime she wants.” Mac promised looking over at Riley.

“How about you me and daddy have a sleep over party soon.” Riley suggested looking over at Mac.

“That sounds like fun.” Mac agreed. “Mommy and I will plan it out.”

“Go to sleep baby, we’ll see you in the morning.” She stated kissing his forehead.

“Promise?”

“We promise.” Mac swore.

The second Riley closed the door behind her she could see how agitated Mac became as he ran his fingers through his hair and paced around the living room. “Mac?”

“I’m going to go for a jog.” He blurted out before he headed out the door.

He was gone for forty-five minutes, and Riley decided to wait up for him, she wanted to talk to him. She needed to know what was going through his head. “Hey.” She called as he walked through the door. “Can we talk once you get out the shower.”

“Sure.” He mumbled defeatedly.

“What’s going on?” She asked passing him a beer.

“Because of me.” He started. “Jack has a broken family.”

She shook her head puzzled with what he was saying. “I don’t understand.”

“Because I left, Jack will never get to experience a normal family dynamic.” Mac complained.

“And what exactly is a normal family dynamic Mac?” Riley questioned. “What family is normal?”

“He’ll never know what it will be like to live with his mom and dad.” He complained angry with himself, angry at the repercussions of his actions. “I took that away from him. Our possible future I took that away from us.” He bellowed.

“Mac, I hope you know that, you’ll always have a piece of my heart; I didn’t know what being in love truly meant until you.” She gave him a small smile as she brushed her thumb against his cheek. Her eyes started to water as she tried her best for emotions not to get the best of her. “You have been the only person I pictured a future with, I was so happy when I found out I was pregnant.” She professed sitting on the couch. “Well, I was freaking out at first.” She jeered. “But I was so happy to be having your baby.” She quickly wiped a tear that slid down his cheek as she gazed into his eyes. “And even though we never really talked about it, I knew you’d be happy.” She whispered emotionally. “I was starting my own family with the man I couldn’t picture my life without. And then you were gone, and I had to learn to be without you and be mom.” She shrugged. “I had to relearn how to be happy, without you. I knew I’d never be fully happy in a world without you but just when I felt like I was finally getting my footing you come back and knock me right back over.” She admitted solemnly.

Mac hung his head is disappointment. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” He cried burying his face in his hands. “I’m so sorry I fucked up everything.”

“We’ll always have each other even if it’s not in the way we pictured.” She pulled him towards her chest embracing him. “We’re going to be okay Mac.” She promised running her fingers through his hair. “Stop carrying it around, it isn’t your fault you didn’t know.”

“The mission was compromised Riles.” He hankered gripping onto her like his life depended on it. “They found me and forced me to work with them, if I didn’t work with the terrorist, they threatened to kill innocent civilians and the city was filled with children.” He wailed. “I couldn’t do it. I did things I never thought I would do, things I have to live with.”

“Mac I know you, I know your heart.” She told him kissing the top of his head. “You did what you had to do to keep who you could safe.”

“And because of that I lost you, I lost time with my son.” He retorted sitting up on the couch gazing over her. “I lost the life I wanted.”

“Bab- Mac.” She quickly corrected taking a hold of his hand. “I want you to be happy, you deserve to be happy. You can still find that.”

“You and Jack make me happy.” He sighed resting his forehead against hers.

“I with Kaeli now.” She hummed. “I really care about him, I’m happy.” She mentioned as tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I know, I’m happy for you. I am.” He stated brushing the curls from her face. “I never deserved you.”

“You deserve everything.” She swept her thumb against his lips as her gazed locked with his.

“I’ll always love you.” She promised.

“And I you.” He inhaled. “You’re it for me Riley, I’ve never loved someone like I love you. I’ll never love someone like I love you.”

“I need you to try.” She advised heartbroken it would pain her just as much to see Mac with another woman, but she can’t just leave Kalei she cared for him and there was a possibility of a future with him. It wasn’t easy for her she doesn’t think she could love anyone like she loved Mac, but she was willing to try.

“Okay.” He murmured.

2 Days Later

“Hey baby.” Kalei greeted pulling her into his apartment before kissing her passionately. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too.” She grinned kissing him again.

“It’s been almost a month since we saw each other I couldn’t go another second.” He told her wrapping her arms around his shoulders. “I love you babe.”

She kissed him eagerly tugging him towards the couch never pulling her lips from his as she tugged at his shirt. “Yeah me too, I really missed you.” She sighed straddling herself on his lap. “Let’s make up for lost time.” She flirted.

“I’m really happy you’re here.” Kalei announced as they ate dinner together in his dining room.

“I’m so glad we finally have sometime to spend together.” She stated elated interlacing their fingers together.

“I don’t ever want to go this without seeing you again.” He necessitated.

“I actually told Matty that I was looking to do more work in house, which I hope means we’ll also get more time to see each other.” She beamed playing with his thumb.

“I’d love that.” Kalei grinned.

“Yeah, me too.”

“I should probably call Mac soon and say goodnight to Jack it’s almost time for him to go to sleep.” She informed Kalei.

“I’ll finish putting the rest of the dishes away, you go ahead.” He suggested.

“Hey.” She beamed when Mac popped up on the screen. “I was just calling to say goodnight to Jack.”

“Oh Riles, I’m sorry.” He stated. “He’s already asleep, we had a pretty hectic day and it tired him out. He fell asleep while we were reading a story, I’d thought he’d stay up long enough to speak to you but for the first time in a while sleep actually won.” He chuckled.

“Lucky you, share your secrets.” She giggled. “I guess I’ll see you guys tomorrow then, love you.” She stated unconsciously.

“Love you too Riles, sweet dreams.” Mac glimmered.

He wasn’t trying to eavesdrop on their conversation, but his kitchen was right next to the living room, and it was hard to ignore. Hearing how easy it was for her to say I love you to Mac wounded him, they been together for over a year, and she hasn’t said it once to him. “Ri.” He called as he walked out the kitchen. “Can we talk?”

“What did you want to talk about?” She questioned nervously. She wasn’t sure where the discussion was going to go. Possibly taking their relationship to the next stage and moving in together but she wasn’t sure if Jack would be able to handle such a big change.

“Riley, I need to know.” Kaeli started. “If I wasn’t in the picture, would there be anything stopping you from being with Mac?”

“Why are you asking me that?” She wondered, out of all the things she thought he would ask that wasn’t one of them.

“Riley it’s been over a year since we’ve been seeing each other.” He reminded her. “A few months ago, I told you I loved you and months later you still haven’t said it back. At least not directly.” He mentioned in frustration. “But whenever you’re on the phone with him, there’s always an I love you. It comes out so easy there’s no thought.”

“Kaeli.” Riley murmured as her eyes filled with tears.

“Please just let me finish.” He demanded sensitively. “I love you Riley, I’m so in love with you. But I can’t force you to love me, especially when you’re in love with someone else.”

She shook her head. “I’ll always love Mac, but I’m not in love with him.” She told him grabbing ahold of his hand. “I want to be with you.” She begged.

“Riley when he was in the hospital, I heard you say you were his wife.” He stated his voice cracking after every word. “Are you guys married?”

“No, we’re not.” She told him honestly. “We have a fake marriage certificate just in case one of us were to get hurt in a mission and we needed medical records.”

“You didn’t even hesitate.” He murmured.

“Either you’re refusing to love anyone again because of what happened or the only person that has a place in your heart is him.”

“Yes, I was hurt-”

“I can’t continue being a place holder for you until you figure out your feelings.” He disclosed taking ahold of her face. “I love you Riley, but I can’t do this anymore.”

“Please-” She stammered. “I love you; I do.”

“Riley, I know you care for me, I know you love me.” He wavered eyeing her with tears in his eyes. “But you’re not in love with me, you love him.” He’s been knowingly lying to himself when it came to her relationship with Mac. Even when he first met Mac at Jack’s birthday party the way she looked at him. All Kalei wanted was that maybe just one day she’d look at him like that. She never has and he’s come to realized she never will.

“I’m sorry.” She stated breaking down gripping on to him tightly. “I never meant to hurt you.”

He pulled her into his embrace whispering into her ear. “I know you didn’t.” He stated calmly.

“You’re a really great guy, you deserve someone who loves you wholeheartedly.” She stated. “I wanted to be that for you, I really did.” She confessed.

“I know baby.” He murmured wiping her tears. “Can I just kiss you one last time?” He asked earnestly.

She nodded wrapping her arms around his shoulders as he kissed her passionately. She kissed him just as fervent, almost as an apology, she finally understood what Mac was saying on taking away the future someone thought they had with you. “I’m sorry.” She murmured against his lips. “I’m so sorry.” She stated pecking his lips one last time.

“I hope you let yourself to be happy Ri.” He stated kissing her forehead.

“I hope you do too, I hope you find your person.” She yearned. “Being loved by you is a beautiful gift.”

“Thank you.” He stated giving her one last kiss. “I hope you and Jack have a full beautiful life whether you choose to be with him or not.” He avowed.

“Hey hun, I thought you were going to stay the night at Kalei’s.” Diane stated surprised to find her at the front door.

“We broke up.” She sighed as she pulled off her boots.

“Oh, baby girl.” She murmured pulling her daughter into a hug. “What happened?”

She shrugged tears filling her eyes.

She knew with just the shrugged exactly what happened. “Baby girl.” She whispered eyeing her. “You love him, you always have.”

“I hurt Kaeli.” She criticized. “I never wanted to hurt him.”

“I know baby girl, but you can’t help who you love.”  She advised comforting her daughter.

“I don’t know what to do.” She blubbered.

“When you’re ready, you let yourself love him without any hesitation.” Diane murmured squeezing her tightly.

“I don’t want to be hurt again.” She pleaded eyeing her mom.

I'm sorry it took me almost a year to update hope some of you guys are still out there and you enjoy this chapter! Thanks for your patience truly appreciate it! ❤️

Chapter Text

Riley couldn’t deny she’s had a miserable couple of weeks since she and Kalei broke up. She deeply cared for him, and she was very happy with him. She never wanted to hurt him and that really broke her. But her love for Mac was something she couldn’t just push away. She loved him, her love for him was something that could never dissipate. It was strong and unmovable.

She hasn’t mentioned to Mac that she and Kalei broke up. She didn’t know how to say it she honestly didn’t want to say it’s just a louder reminder of how she hurt Kaeli. So, they worked together, they coparented together, and she was thankful that Mac hasn’t asked about him. She knew she would have to tell him eventually but today wasn’t the day.

“Morning Riles.” He greeted taking a seat a couple chairs from her in the computer room.

“Morning Mac.” She murmured giving him a small smile.

“Sorry I missed school drop off today.” Mac sighed turning his chair to face Riley.

“It’s okay.” She murmured; she knew Mac had to be at the Phoenix earlier than usual to send the other recruits on their mission. “Jack missed you.”

“I missed him too.” He mentioned solemnly.  “But I plan to take him out tomorrow, tire him out I think he’ll have a lot fun.”

“Where are you guys going to tomorrow?” Riley wondered.

“I was thinking the farm, then out for some lunch and then to the museum.” He informed Riley before getting back to work.

“He’s going to love that.” Riley stated giving him a small smile.

Mac couldn’t wait to take Jack out today, having a son brought so much joy and fulfillment into his life. Though he and Riley never talked about kids, with jobs like theirs they never really thought having kids was in the cards for them. Mac was grateful for whatever miracle that sent Jack to him, and to have Riley has the mother of his child he will forever eternally grateful for that.

“Hey, I know you had plans to take him out today but he’s sick.” Riley informed Mac as they entered the house.

Mac frowned. “Is he okay?” Reaching out for him and holding him close to his chest. “Hey buddy.”

“Hi daddy.” Jack stated solemnly.

“It’s just a little cold, he’s just been very tired.” She told Mac rubbing Jack’s back. “I know you really wanted to see him so that’s why I brought him over, but would you mind if I stay?”

He shook his head. “Of course not, I bet he’d feel better if you did.”

They spent most of the day together cuddled up on the couch with Jack, neither of them minded they enjoyed each other’s silent company. Watching a marathon of Jack’s new obsession the show Bluey which Mac and Riley also liked watching. “You know there’s been a few times where I catch myself watching this show even after Jack goes to bed.” Riley giggled.

“I thought I was the only one.” Mac chuckled. “It’s actually a really funny show and really well written.”

“I agree.” Riley said and they both threw their head back in laughter earning a puzzled look from Jack. Mac ended their night making them grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner before they got Jack ready for bed and staying in bed with him until he finally fell asleep. “He’s out.” Riley whispered quietly before she kissed his forehead and got out of bed.

He looked over at son and kissed the back of his head. “Feel better bud.”

“Do you mind if I spend the night, I just want to make sure he’s okay. He tends to get up at night sometimes when he’s sick.” She informed Mac.

“I don’t mind. Coffee and Die Hard?” He suggested grabbing mugs from the cabinets.

“Sounds great.” He chuckled as they headed towards the kitchen. He patiently waited for their coffee to be done before he joined her on the couch. “I can’t wait to let him stories about Jack, he would have loved being with our son.”

“I’ve told him a bit about Jack, and how much he would have loved being a grandpa to him.” Riley told him a bit somberly. Riley never thought about losing Jack, he was so resilient she always saw him as superhuman. “I never thought we’d lose him.”

“Me either.” Mac sighed.

“What do you think he would have thought of us having a son together?” She sneered trying to lighten up the mood. “Y’all two together?” She started mimicking Jack’s Texan accent. “You two did the hokey pokey and now ya’ll are having a baby?” She laughed.

Mac chuckled. “Then he’d ended it with one of his weird Jack quotes and a threat.” He said looking over at her. “You better there for them twenty-four seven or I’ll shoot you in the hokey pokey and make sure you’ll never be able to shake it all about ever again.” He drawled in a southern accent.

“That’s exactly what he’d say.” She laughed.

His laughter quickly subsided. “He would have murdered me for leaving, and rightfully so.”

She shook her head in disagreement. “You didn’t know, it was partly my fault for not saying anything. He would have found you, not told you why he dragged you out the mission and locked us up in a room together until told you.”

“If things were different if Jack was still here, what would it be like?” He wondered blissfully.

“Jack could fix almost anything.” Riley stated pensively. “He would have made sure that we all would have had our happily ever after.” Tears streamed down her eyes, and she quickly closed them she couldn’t face Mac she couldn’t look into his eyes. She’ll tell him the truth about Kaeli about her feelings she just needed more time. She didn’t know what got into her she shouldn’t have said that, but thankfully Mac didn’t say anything he just passed her over a box of tissues before turning on the TV.

They ended up falling asleep before the movie ended, exhaustion hitting them so hard that they didn’t end up waking up until Jack shook them awake.

“Mommy, daddy.” Jack called waking them out of their sleep.

“Yes baby?” Riley muttered still half asleep, feeling something firm under her. Somehow she ended up nestled up on top of Mac using his chest as her personal pillow.

“Mommy, daddy.” He repeated before he started babbling on.

Mac started shuffling around his hands roaming his surroundings before opening his eyes. When he realized what it was his eyes shot open and she was staring right back at him. “Sorry.” He quickly muttered.

“It’s fine.” She hummed giving a soft smile. “Even when he’s sick, he’s still a morning person, just like his father.” Riley complained slowing getting up her hands unconsciously sliding down his sides.

“Let’s play.” Jack demanded pulling Mac by his arm causing him to quickly sit up.

“Your hair is a mess.” Riley laughed brushing his hair back with her hand. “Come on baby, daddy is tired he’ll play with you later.”

He took ahold of her hand and squeezed it. “I’m fine Riles, why don’t you get some rest, I got him.”

“Are you sure?” She questioned.

He nodded reassuring her before letting go of her hand. “The guest room is still all set for you.”

“Thank you.” She said giving him a small smile.

Riley just tossed and turned in her bed for fifteen minutes before she realized she probably won’t end up getting any sleep, so she decided to jump in the shower. Thankfully she always carried extra clothes with her everywhere she went.

“Mommy, mommy.”  Jack called running towards the guest room.

Mac ran after him failing to catch him before he reached the door. “Jack wait mommy is-”

“Mommy is awake and drying her hair.” She answered as she dried her hair with the towel. “I couldn’t sleep. But to be honest that’s the best of slept in a long time.” She confessed. “I was thinking of grabbing us some breakfast. In the mood for anything specific?”

He didn’t hear a word she said, his focus was on her. The way her towel was wrapped around her body how her wet hair glistened around her shoulders and the way she was looking at him, she hasn’t looked at him like that in a long time.

“Daddy.” Jack hummed tapping him on the leg which awoke him from his trance. “Daddy are you hungry?” He was hungry but it wasn’t for food he thought to himself. He bent down and wrapped his arms around Jack picking him up. “I’ll get whatever you’re having, you’re less likely to eat my food when we get the same things.” He mentioned awkwardly laughing trying his best trying to act like he wasn’t completely distracted by her.

“Wow.” She said sarcastically. “So now you’re just being greedy.” She scoffed. “Fine I’ll get two things I want.”

“Oh, and I’m the greedy one.” He chuckled standing up with Jack in his arms.

That earned him an eye roll. “What do you want to eat baby?” Riley asked as she walked over to them.

“Pancakes.” He celebrated clapping his hands together.

It took all of Mac’s strength to stop himself from checking Riley out, she was so close to him he can smell the scent of her shampoo and see the water droplets on her skin. Her eyes were on Jack and his eyes were on her as he involuntarily licked his lips. She’ll never understand the hold she has on Mac, and that hold is something he’s just going to have to live with.

“I’m going to get dressed.” She mentioned as her gaze locked with his. It was intense and it took her breath away, she was so stupidly in love with him, but she was too afraid to tell him.

He cleared his throat. “Right, we’ll be in the living room.”

“Bluey?” Jack asked resting her hands on either side of Mac’s cheeks.

“How about we get some juice and read a book, we watched a lot of Bluey yesterday.” Mac told Jack politely.

“Food should be ready, I should be back in like ten minutes.” Riley told them.

“We’ll be here.” Mac answered.

“Hey I’m back.” She announced.

“So, what two things did you get for yourself that I get a bite of.” He joked.

“Well.” She started taking the food out the bag. “I got way more food than we need.” She admitted. “I got some chicken and waffles, and I also got some breakfast sandwiches.”

“And pancakes.” Jack added.

“Yes, and pancakes for Jack.” She beamed kissing her son’s temple as she set his plate of pancakes in front of him.

“That sounds amazing.” He said as he watched her spilt their breakfast.

“Would you mind dropping Jack off at my mom’s later, she wants to see him and Matty needs me at work, and I bet mom would love to see you too.” Riley added and she washed away her breakfast with some coffee.

“Yeah of course.” He assured passing over some utensils.

“Thanks Mac, I couldn’t do this without you.” She stated gently bumping her shoulder against his.

“You’ll never have to.” He swore. “Never again.”

“I know.” She whispered wrapping an arm around his waist.

“Grandma.” Jack squealed a bit nasally due to the cold he still had.

“My Jacky.” She announced with equal enthusiasm pulling him in for a hug.

“Hey Diane.” He greeted pulling her into a hug.

“Hi Angus, how are you?”

“I’m good, I’m doing a lot better.” He told her. “How are you?”

“I’m great, now that my grandson is here.” She beamed. “And how’s Jack doing.”

“Better.” Jack quickly shouted.

“He’s definitely better than he was yesterday.” Mac told Diane. “But still has a bit of a cough and runny nose.”

“Some grandma cuddles, will make him feel better.” She stated squeezing Jack. “Why don’t you come in, I wanted to give you something.”

“Sure.” Mac murmured.

“Jack why don’t you go into the playroom and grandma will meet you in a second.” Diane suggested to Jack.

“Okay grandma.”

“I’m glad you’re doing better Mac; you really scared us you know.” Diane mentioned.

“I know I should have known-”

“I know you did it to keep Riley safe.” She told him grabbing ahold of his hand.

“I’ll always keep her safe.” Mac promised. “I’d do anything for them, for you to keep you all safe and happy.”

“I know that I never doubted it.” Diane assured him brushing her thumb gently across his hand trying to comfort him. “But she’s so afraid to lose you.”

“That won’t happen, we’re no longer going on missions.” He informed her. “Unless it’s an emergency, Riley and I are trainers now.”

“She didn’t tell me you, also stepped back.”

“Yes, I did. I don’t want to miss anything else. I want to be the most present for Jack and for Riley.” He told her.

“I know it was hard trying to get through to Riley the first couple weeks you were back, but she thought of you every day from the day you left until the moment you came back. It took a toll on her emotionally and she just didn’t want to put Jack through that.” Diane confessed.

“I know.” Mac nodded.

“I want you to watch this, she had every intention of having you in his life from the start.” Diane defended passing him a USB port.”

“Thank you, Diane.” Mac murmured pulling her in for a hug.

The second he got home, he rushed to his office and connected the device to his computer seeing file after file of short videos and photos of Riley throughout her pregnancy and pictures of Jack and a newborn until about two years old. After he was done scrolling through pictures he started to watch the videos on file.

February 2018

Riley was sitting in one of the work rooms at the Phoenix with her phone propped up on her desk recording a video she wanted to save for Mac to show him once he got back. “A month without you and all I keep thinking about is the last night we spent together. I know we spoke a few days ago and I you said you don’t know when you’d be able to call again so I decided to make these videos to show you once you get back. I have a surprise to tell you, something I found out this morning, but I don’t want to say it on camera at least not yet I’m hoping you’ll be back soon enough to tell you in person.”

March 2018

Riley was sitting in her mom’s living room with her mom’s cat resting on her lap. “I miss you and I can’t wait to see you. I love you so much Mac, see you soon.” Riley stated blowing a kiss to the camera.

April 2018

Riley was lying on their bed with the phone in her hand, and tired eyes. “It’s been hard to sleep lately this bed has been so lonely without you. But I’ve had plenty have company, especially lately. Hope you’re safe out there. I love you, see you soon.”

May 2018

“Hey Mac.” Riley greeted she was sitting in their office, where he was currently sitting with a huge smile on her face. “I honestly, thought you’d be here by now, it been almost six months.” She sighed sadly. “I’m rambling.” She paused she took the pillow that rested on her lap and put it on the floor. “I know I mentioned I didn’t want to saying anything until you got back but I can’t really hide it anymore. I’m pregnant, how? I don’t know. I guess by some miracle this little baby wanted to be here even though we were being safe. I’m rambling again.” She stood up turning sideways to show her little bump. “We never really talked about kids being a part of our future plan but, this little guy had other ideas.” She sighed. “I know you’d be really happy if you were here. I wish you were. But we’ll see each other soon.”

June 2018

She was in her old bedroom in her mom’s house resting at the edge of the bed camera in hand and a solemn smile on her face. “I’ve been staying with my mom lately home doesn’t feel like home without you. He’s been moving a lot in there and I’ve had a lot of cravings, the doctor said he’s doing great and he’s healthy. Matty, Boze and Desi are excited to be honorary aunts and uncles since neither of us have any siblings.” She giggled. “He has so much love already, we can’t wait to see you stay safe, we love you.” She expressed rubbing her belly.

July 2018

She was back in her old bedroom lying in bed with just a sports bra as her belly bulged out in front of her. “Hey Babe, I miss you.” She expressed. “It’s starting to get a little tight in there for him we’ve been told he’s a pretty big boy.” She laughed. “For the first few months he wouldn’t let me eat anything the morning sickness was slowly killing me. But lately it’s like I can’t stop eating.” She chuckled. “I’m thinking of naming him Jack, I know Jack would have loved that. And I know you’d approve. She reached out to the side of the bed bringing a small machine into the camera frame. “Oh, I got this doppler that I know you probably would have made if you were here. Do you hear it?” She beamed. “I can’t believe we’re having a baby we’re just two months away.”

August 2018

“So, we made it.” She said somberly grinning at the camera. “Baby Jackson James MacGyver should be here any day now.” She stated emotionally rubbing her belly. “We just finished setting up his room.” She told him picking up her phone and panning it around. “I’ve decided to stay with my mom until you get back and then we can decorate the extra room and create his nursery there. But here we went pretty neutral some grays and earth greens even added a little daybed. I’ll probably be spending most of my nights here anyway.” She paused for a couple of moments before she spoke again. “So.” She breathed shakily. “I. Um. Never thought I would do this without you.” She confessed as tears streamed down her face. “I thought having a baby would be, an us thing never a me thing. I love you, please stay safe for us alright.” She cried wiping her tears before turning off the camera. “Hope you’ll be here soon.”

Early September 2018

This video wasn’t being recorded by her this time, there was someone behind the camera and he guessed it was her mom. “Hey stranger, it’s finally nice to meet you.” Riley greeted when they laid him on her chest. He could see she’s never felt so elated and solemn in the same breath. “I love you.” She expressed gently kissing his hand. “Can’t believe I’m your mother, never thought I’d say those words.” She wept caressing his cheek. “You look just like your dad; he would have been so happy to see you.” She whispered tears escaping her. She tried her best to keep together but once the nurse took him away to clean him up, she broke down. “I can’t do this without him.” She murmured lowly before the camera turned off.

He wiped his tears and once again for the millionth time since he’s been back on how different things could have been different. How he could have had the family he’s always wanted. He has his son, and promised to give him the best life that he can even though he could no longer give him the family he deserved. He can’t change the past he can only change the present and though he no longer has a chance with Riley, he has a chance to be the most present best father and the most present coparent he can be. He checked the time on his phone and texted Diane to see if Jack was ready to be picked up, only to find out Riley was already on her way back with him. He went to the bathroom and washed his face washing away any distress that was visible. Then decided to head to the living room and wait for them on the couch. Once Mac heard Riley’s car pull up on the driveway, he headed out the door even before she was able to get out the car.

“He fell asleep.” Riley informed him. “But I gave him a bath before we headed back here.”

“PJ’s and everything.” Mac murmured pulling Jack into his arms and kissing his forehead. “I love you buddy.” Holding him a little tighter.

“I’ll bring in his bag.” Riley told him before following behind him.

He tucked him tenderly into his bed peppering his small hand with kisses, as Riley kissed the top of his head before they both headed out the room. “I bought some ibuprofen, vapor rub and some tea for him. Just to have some extra here instead of having you bring them back and forth.”

“Thanks.” She murmured. “Do you mind if we talk before, I head out.” she stated quietly.

“Sure.” Mac murmured.

“Let’s head to the balcony we always have best talks there.” She told him.

“Okay, I’ll bring Jack’s monitor.”

“It’s the perfect night out.” She expressed sitting on the bench. “Look at the stars.”

“It’s beautiful out.” He stated nervously he was afraid what she wanted to talk to him about. Hundreds of thoughts run through his mind, like were she and Kalei moving in together, or were they getting married or having a baby. That would probably break him, but he’d be happy for them and for Jack to have a sibling. Whatever she planned on telling him he needed to be happy for her no matter how much it hurt him.

“Yeah.” She murmured gazing up at the sky before her gaze locked with his. “Mac, I love you.” She started as tears already started rolling down her eyes. “I fell in love with you so deeply that even the idea of being with someone else seemed nearly impossible. But I moved on, and I was happy but then you came back and wall I built around my heart just for you shattered. But I tried to build it back up with anger, make it bullet proof. But even then, I knew you’d get through it.” She shrugged wiping away her tears. “Mac you are who my heart has always wanted to be with. No matter how much I’ve tried to fight it.”

“Riles.” He murmured emotionally.

“Kaeli and I broke up, a few weeks ago.” She admitted guiltily shaking her head. “He was really good to me, and I hate that I hurt him.”

He’s broken her in so many ways, in ways he might never be able to fix but he swore to spend the rest of his life trying to put together every broken piece. “I am so sorry Riles, I never meant to-”

“I know Mac.” She sighed. “I’ve seen you be happy for me and supporting me. So please don’t feel guilty. You are who I am meant to be with. I’ve always known that, but I just need a little more time.” She expressed.

“I will wait for you for the rest of my life Riles, even if we’re old and gray and all I get is just one day with you.” He professed. “That’d be enough for me. I love you so much Riley and I will spend the rest of my life being the best partner you deserve.”

“I love you, Mac.” She crashed into him sobbing into his chest, she felt such a sense of relief no longer fighting what she felt about him and was grateful he respected that she needed more time. Part of her was excited to see where her future with Mac will go, to be a family to give Jack a loving two parent household. But the other part of her was petrified not knowing if everything will work out between them or the possibility of losing him again.

“I love you Riles.” Mac cried wrapping his arms around her. “I will wait for you, for as long as you need Riles. I love you so much baby.” He announced kissing the top of her head.
