Ghosts In the Endzone

Summary:

Willie takes Alex on a haunting date to get revenge on one of Alex's high school bullies.

Notes:

For Goblinofthewords!

Disclaimer: author knows nothing about American football. Literally the things I had to google for this less than 1000K fic were shameful. "what is the kicker called in football" is now in my search history. Spoiler alert. They're called a kicker! Who knew?

Title comes from the 90s movie Angels in the Endzone. I thought I was imagining that there was a football spinoff to Angels In the Outfield but nope, it was real.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Just have faith in me, okay?” Willie pleaded.

“Yeah…nothing good ever comes from you saying that.”

Alex hadn’t been sure what to expect when Willie wanted to take him on a haunting date, especially not when their target was his former high school bully. Bullies and high school altogether was something Alex had been more than happy to leave in the past when he died, but the moment Willie learned about his high school bullies, he had been insistent that they go on a little haunting date for some payback.

And who was he to say no to a little haunting? Or a date night with Willie?

He just hadn’t expected that date to be so…public.

Apparently, his main high school bully- Jack Davidson- was currently the second oldest quarterback in the NFL. He had three Super Bowl titles under his belt, was worth a cool $180 million and…the universe just wasn’t fair. He and Willie stood on the sidelines of this Sunday’s game, Willie wearing a whistle around his neck that he had stolen from a referee.

There were television cameras all around; whatever haunting they did would be seen by possibly the whole country.

“I thought we’d start small,” Alex complained, “you know, maybe put dirt in his coffee or something.”

Willie snorted and clapped his shoulder.

“Hotdog, this guy’s is one of the richest and oldest athlete in the NFL. He’s been caught in multiple cheating scandals, he’s been divorced three times, he’s literally known for being a jerk. And, he made the mistake of bullying my boyfriend. It’s time he learned his lesson.”

My boyfriend. Hearing that would never not make his soul flutter.

“Just follow my lead!” Willie grinned, patting him on the back. “This will be fun.”

“I don’t even know anything about football!”

“That’s the fun part!”

Alex hesitated as he watched Willie jog onto the field, entirely unnoticed by lifers of course, blowing the stolen whistle multiple times and pretending to referee, causing mayhem while the actual referee freaked out. Biting his lip, he had to admit how completely adorable his boyfriend was being right now, and he couldn’t say no to poofing out to the field to join him.

They started out small.

They drummed on some helmets, breaking the player’s concentration.

Willie kept on randomly blowing the referee whistle and it really should have not been funny after the fifth time but it really was.

Alex easily found Jack Davidson. Willie ran along side him as Jack raced down the field, easily stealing the football from him, cheering with success as Alex burst out laughing. It took Jack a full yard to realize he was no longer even holding the ball. His boyfriend threw the ball to Alex, who casually handed it off to a player on the other team.

At one point while Jack was running, Alex danced around him, eventually managing to spin the quarterback around the other way.

(for the record, they never once possessed anyone)

For awhile, they let the game play per usual, casually watching from where they sat on top of the field goal. Somehow, despite their shenanigans the score was still too close and Jack’s team could potentially make a comeback with a field goal.

Obviously, there was only one solution to this.

The kicker on Jack’s team ran for the ball and…

Alex pulled it away at the last minute.

Charlie Brown and Lucy style.

Willie cheered him on from the sidelines, jumping up and down. His number one fan.

After the game the two of them hit the locker room to get back on Jack for one particularly traumatic bullying experience. Professional football locker rooms were way swankier than high school ones for sure, but they still had showers. And lockers for gear and clothes.

“This feels a little too mean,” Alex admitted quietly, as though they could be heard.

Only a few players, including Jack, remained as he and Willie lingered by the lockers. They both sported jerseys now- Willie had managed to magic their names onto the back of them.

“How many times did he do this to you?” Willie pointed out.

Alex sighed.

“Too many. And he did it to Luke too. And Reggie.”

“Reggie?” Willie hissed, slamming his fist against the locker. “Nope, that’s it, Hotdog, we’re doing this.”

He phased through the locker, grabbing Jack’s duffel full of his clothes and uniforms, his face completely serious as he handed it over to Alex. They were getting pretty good with their ghost magic by now, a little too good, including being able to make objects invisible and visible with ease. Right now, the duffle was as invisible as they are, and for good measure after the other players left they snuck over to the showers, grabbing the last of the towels too. As one final token of revenge, Willie managed to cut off the hot water so that the shower suddenly turned cold, sending Jack running out of it, finding the towels missing. He was swearing as he ran right passed the ghosts giggling in the corner.

“Did I deliver on this date or did I deliver?” Willie teased.

Alex was beaming as he tugged his boyfriend toward him, and instead of answering captured him into a kiss.

On their way out, they stopped by Jack Davidson’s empty locker for Alex to write:

Alex & Willie were here

Notes:

This fic was inspired by a scene in my fic Dance the Devil, where Willie finds out about Alex's high school bullies and demands to know names so they can go haunting them on their next date. Goblinofthewords wanted to see that scene in some form, it never happened in the fic but I finally came up with this idea! Better late than never, right?

Hope you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for reading!
