Work Text:

The rebuilding of Heartland after complete destruction went better than anyone had hoped. Among the rebuilt places is a duel area.

Yuto had explained to Yuya that there used to be several on top of it not being weird to duel in the middle of the street.

Even before the destruction some duels took place on construction sites.

The duels in Heartland before Academia came were anything but safe, but you didn't get carded after you lost.

Apparently a very important tournament took place on a roller-coaster that forcefully ejected the duelist after they lost.

There were rumors that there was another inter-dimensional war, but not many people had a memory of the day and there were no signs of damage so many people dismissed it as a hoax.

Kaito however vowed it was true and he never jokes.

Yuya (and Yuto) wouldn’t have remembered that war even exists if it weren’t for someone screaming “Kattobing” at the top of his lungs eagerly facing everyone at the duel area.

How Kaito claims this boy ever came out victorious in a dimensional war Yuya and Yuto would never know.

Yuma does not seem that exceptional to him, but then again you can not really judge a duelist by only one turn in a duel.

What was weird is that Yuma does back-flips as if he is on an action field. Yuya had never seen such animated movement dueling a 'regular' duel.

Overall Yuya can see why some would like Yuma.

Heartland City was destroyed in an inter-dimensional war again. But Yuma won't let that stop him from dueling to his heart's content. Well, not anymore.

He used to…

Seeing all your friends die one by one does a number on your mental health, even though they obtained the Numeron Code to revive everyone afterwards the feeling will never be forgotten.

Yuma does a back-flip before running forward and drawing. His go-to-move when he is feeling the flow.

He draws the card he needs and wins the duel.

After telling his opponent what a great duel it was and he would duel them again, Yuma spots a familiar face.

He had never really interacted with Kaito’s new friends before, but that does not mean he does not recognize them.

“You’re Yuto right?” the black and magenta haired duelist asked.

“Yuya actually.”

People still confused them, even after Yuto doesn't really exist anymore.

“I see, I see,” Yuma smiles. “I’m Yuma. It is nice meeting someone else who had their soul split across dimensions.”

“Wait. What?”

The last thing Yuya thinks before the conversation continues is “OK, maybe Yuma is not ordinary.”

Notes:

Friendly reminder that in the anime Astral's soul got partially scattered across dimensions and Yuma is a piece. Also what is with Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonist shattering and/or merging souls?

Next up: Yuma and Yusaku
