    Avery is very good at this. Derek is very bad at accepting it. They are both, slowly, figuring it out.

    A collection of soft moments set after the end of everything, grocery runs and bad Skywars games and 2am conversations and learning, little by little, what it means to just exist without the weight of the universe pressing down.

    Whatever you do at the crossroads, keep going forward.

    They did. This is what comes next.

    Whatever you do at the crossroads, keep going forward.
    The King is gone. Derek Hutchins is alive, somehow, improbably, stubbornly alive, and Avery is not going to waste that.

    Recovery is mostly boring. It involves bad hospital coffee, a couch that smells like laundry detergent, breakfast eggs, and a YouTuber who reads academic papers about forbidden knowledge at 2am because he refuses to let Derek be alone in this.

    It also, eventually, involves Skywars.
    Derek is very bad at Skywars. He is working on it.

    When a part of the cerebral cortex dies, it’s inevitable that the function that correlates one part to another loses its purpose.

    But all you need is a reconnection.

    A part of him was scared. Is scared. He could live a life beyond this. Could live a life forgetting Derek, a stranger he’s searched for longer than he’d even come to know. It would be easy, to forget. It would be simpler.

    But simple is New Year’s Eve spent alone at home playing Minecraft off a laptop he’d picked up in a locker he was never meant to pry open. Simple is watching hours worth of video content, of the gameplay of a man solving puzzles in a seemingly impossible situation on that sandbox game. Simple is being alone.

    Derek was always meant to reach Avery, and Avery was meant to be reached.

    This time, Avery means to do the opposite.

    The thing about time is that it's relative. If something happens in one moment it also happens in every moment throughout all of its existence.

    That is to say that when a fraction of a fraction of the King slips into Avery's mind on New Year's Eve, Avery also wakes up a year prior with omnipotence, a world's worth of grief, and his best friend's real-life address burning in his head.

    Along the way he picks up a baseball bat. It's a necessary provision for smashing Derek's laptop into a thousand pieces before he can so much as launch Minecraft.
