Work Text:
This was definitely not how Maya had planned for her day to go, not in the slightest. They’d started off, like any other day. The blonde captain giving her girlfriend a kiss goodbye before heading off to the station. Nothing exciting there. They’d just gone about their days just like it was a regular thing. Cleaning, doing drills, just the usual. Then they went to their first house fire, once again nothing was wrong and it was perfectly fine.
It wasn’t until the second fire did they have an issue. They’d been called to a school where some kid had set off a firework inside of a class room causing a lot of people to think that a gun had gone off instead, which had resulted in more injuries from the aftermath. From broken bones to bruises, some kids got crushed from trying to move. But they helped everyone.
It wasn’t until they were coming up to their last patient to help did Maya realize why the child looked so familiar. It was Ellis Grey- Shepherd. Meredith’s youngest. There were some students running around her but it was clear, some of them had already ran over the girl. But the blonde could see not far up the hallway more kids were on their way. And she knew, they weren’t going to stop. Maya had been the one to drop all of her items where they were and ran straight for the girl, picking her up as she ran past. But that’s because she knew, if she didn’t, the rest of the people running out the door would’ve trampled the girl and quite possibly killed her. But Maya knew, she could get to her in time, she was the fastest between all of them even with all her heavy turnout gear on. She became their child to take to the hospital, knowing Meredith needed her child to be safe. But, it was also where Maya found herself in a slight predicament. Currently seated on one of the gurney’s, in the back of the aid car, holding the child on her lap as she rubbed her back, the same child with a death grip on the blonde’s shirt.
She was feeling incredibly awkward. She wasn’t good with kids, not in the slightest. But she tried to wash away that feeling to just be there for Ellis. The poor child had a broken arm, nothing too serious, but it would need surgery and then a cast. But Maya would still ensure she was there for the child. Or at least until they got to the hospital for someone else to take over. Ellis just seemed to have a hold on the blonde captain, her little hands holding tightly onto the front of Maya’s shirt, them not being able to entangle the two but the Captain simply waved them away, leaving Andy in charge until she got home to the station.
Meredith had always been there for them when they needed it, now it was Maya’s turn to return the favor, in the sense of being there for her child. She could tell, from the looks that Dean and Vic were giving her, it was the last on the list of things that they had expected to see from the blonde but she didn’t care. She was putting her worries aside and being there for Ellis.
“You know, I’ve broken my arm before too.” Maya spoke, trying to create conversation with the child. Definitely not her territory. She should’ve got Vic in the back instead of her, at least she could talk to Ellis normally.
They sat there in silence for a few moments, Maya letting Ellis to talk only she wanted to. They‘d given the child a small dose of child pain relief, knowing the break was painful, she just hoped it was at a bearable amount for a child, something they didn’t often speak of.
“You did? How did you break that?”. the young blonde asked, her voice just above a whisper. Maya looked down at the small girl and smiled softly. She shuffled slightly on the bed so she was bit more comfortable, her back leaning against the high end of the gurney so she had a backing and crossed her legs with the small blonde sitting in the gap between them.
“Well, there was one time, when I was around your age, I was running. Now I’m a good runner and I never fall over when running, and when I fell, I just got back up thinking it was nothing. My father thought it was nothing too.” the blonde spoke softly, swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat, noting how quiet the front had gotten. She continued “But when I went to the hospital, I had a few scans and I got this really awesome cast. And that’s exactly what you’re going to get at the hospital after your scan. You’re going to get a wicked cast. Do you know what color you’re going to choose?”.
As Ellis thought about Maya’s question, she shuffled in closer to her chest, not realizing the way the older woman froze up slightly before relaxing. “I think I might go with blue. It was my daddy’s favorite color.. and mine.” Ellis spoke, as she took Maya’s shirt in her fingers with her free hand, giving it a slight twist as she held on. “And it matches your eyes too.”
The last part of Ellis’s comment caught Maya by surprise, she didn’t realize the little girl had been paying that much attention to the blonde’s eyes. Maya licked her lips before continuing “You want to know something? My favorite color is blue too. But not because of my eyes. It’s because my girlfriend looks so pretty in blue that it’s now my favorite. Don’t tell her that though.”
As those words left Maya’s mouth, she couldn’t help but chuckle quietly at the laugh that left Ellis’s mouth. She was glad, that despite the pain, she was able to make the little girl laugh. Feeling them coming to a stop, Maya looked up as there was movement at the back of the car. Feeling Ellis’s grip on her tighten and a head buried into her chest, Maya wrapped her arms around the child in a protective manner.
Licking her lips, she looked on as Vic and Miller opened the back of the aid car, pulling the gurney out as they did so. “Six year old female patient. Suspected broken arm after being trampled at a school fire. Ignore the fire captain, she’s not injured.” Vic spoke, winking in her friends direction.
Maya rolled her eyes with a slight smile in her friends direction. As they were wheeled into the emergency room and into a cubicle, Maya looked up at the surgeon’s that crowded the gurney but she could not spot anyone that she knew. With a frown, Maya shook her head “No thank you, it’d like to see Chief Miranda Bailey please. I don’t want either one of you on her case.”
As the residents and potentially interns just stood there staring at the blonde, she knew they were just thinking how could this blonde be calling the shots when she wasn’t even a surgeon? “None of you will be touching this patient until I get to see Chief Miranda Bailey. Now. Tell her Captain Maya Bishop is here to see her. Until she is here, you will not be coming back into this room. Now go. Go.” Maya couldn’t help but raise her voice, letting them hear the tone of voice the blonde would use when it came to her own firefighters if she needed them to either take her seriously or understand the severity of the issue. Something of which caused Vic to snort with laughter, watching as the surgeons scampered off with a tail between their legs.
“Looks like Captain Bishop is all sorts of scary when she needs to be. Even at a place that she certainly does not hold any command or authority.” Vic laughed as she nudged Dean slightly. Dean went to speak but stopped when the head that had buried its way into Maya’s chest popped up to speak.
“She’s not scary. She’s lovely and cuddly now take that back.” Ellis spoke with a small glare in the older woman’s direction, looking ever the bit of her mother. Maya bit her lip, trying to hold in the laughter of this child staring down Vic and Dean. Vic looked towards her captain and friend, trying to gauge what she was to do but at Maya’s shrug, the brunette spoke.
“Sorry for calling you scary. You’re definitely lovely and cuddly.” Vic apologised, winking in Maya’s direction. Satisfied with her response, Ellis turned her head to bury it back into Maya’s chest.
The blonde rolled her eyes before narrowing them in her direction before sobering up “You two head on back to the station. I’ll either hitch a ride or run back. Who know’s how long I’ll be here for.” the blonde spoke, indicating to the extra head that she grew.
Reaching forward, Vic ran her hand up Ellis’s back before moving it to Maya’s shoulder, giving it a slight squeeze before she and Dean headed off.
Letting out a soft sigh, the blonde shuffled on the bed again so her legs were out straight in front of her. But, Ellis didn’t shuffle. Her hold on the blonde tightened. Maya didn’t seem to mind though, it wasn’t like it was a strong hold. It just meant that she couldn’t reach her phone to message anyone that she needed. But that didn’t matter. Because within moments, the blonde spotted a very familiar short woman walking towards her, looking like she was going to kill the blonde.
“Bishop, I swear, if you’re here because you’ve hurt yourself I’m going to smack you.” Ever the Station Mom, she would indeed smack any fire fighters who got hurt, especially her husband. But the Chief stopped when she realized the blonde Captain wasn’t alone and that she wasn’t the patient.
“You won’t be smacking me don’t worry. I just seem unable to move at this present time.” Maya spoke, looking down at Ellis who had shuffled slightly so her broken arm could be out but her other arm was still holding onto the blonde for dear life. “This is Ellis Grey-Shepherd. She was injured at school today in the aftermath of a firework going off in a classroom. She has broken her arm and will require an ortho consult please.” Maya ran off the issues with Ellis.
Miranda nodded her head. She’d get Link to do the consult but the own child’s mother was in surgery, she was nearly done thank goodness. Ellis seemed perfectly content in the older blonde’s arms, something that was interesting to see because she certainly did not seem like a motherly person.
“We need to get her up for an x-ray but it seems like her grasp on you Bishop is quite strong and I doubt she’d want to let you go.” at the shake of the young blonde’s head, Miranda continued “You’re welcome to go in there with her but I need to ask is there any chance you’re...”
Even before Miranda got the chance to finish off her question, Maya was quick to shake her head no. “Definitely not. But speaking of, can you send off a message to Carina please? I don’t want her to hear that I’m in the hospital, especially in the emergency room because she will think it’s me.”
Miranda nodded her head as she pulled out her phone to do the thing that was asked before indicating for the interns standing off to the side to come over. “I’ll send her a message now. In the mean time, these interns will take your two up to get an x-ray.” Miranda spoke as she turned towards the interns standing before her “Get them to the x-ray now. Tell them it’s a VIP patient for the chief and that Captain Bishop will be going in with her. And if there’s an issues tell them to contact me. Understood?’. Miranda questioned. Once she got the nods of being affirmative, Miranda herself nodded. “Good, I’ll see you two soon.”

They hadn’t long finished up in the x-ray room did Maya and Ellis find themselves in a private room on the pediatrics's ward, the older blonde having changed Ellis into the children’s hospital gown that was provided. She had indeed broken her arm, in two places unfortunately, and the duo were waiting for Link to come in and do the consult. Bailey had instructed that she only wanted the best on Ellis’s case, and that was the Chief of Orthopedics and the Chief of Pediatrics, the later of which she hadn’t met.
Ellis’s grasp on the blonde had only relaxed to put her gown on before it once returned to being a strong hold grasp. It was odd, for the blonde, to be so content with having a child in her arms. She ran her fingers through Ellis’s hair, the touch seemingly soothing the girl because she wasn’t shaking near as much to what she was earlier but she knew the little girl couldn’t wait to see her mother. Where as the blonde, she couldn’t wait to see her girlfriend.
Looking up at the knock on the door, Maya turned her head to the side before smiling fondly. There she is. There’s the brunette of her thoughts. The woman of which she was falling, slowly but surely in love with. Maya reached her free hand out to her girlfriend, smiling as the brunette took it and moved towards her. Thankful Bailey hadn’t gotten in touch with Carina, letting the other surgeon be aware of Maya in the hospital. She knew, full well, that if Carina had found out she was in the hospital from someone else, it certainly would not have gone down too well.
“Hello bella, I think it’s safe to say I was surprised to hear that you were in the hospital. More so because you’re on the children’s ward. But now I understand. The bambino clearly doesn’t want to let go of you.” Carina smiled as she moved towards the beside, running her fingers through familiar blonde tendrils before leaning down to press a kiss to Maya’s head.
When the surgeon had found out the firefighter was in the hospital from an intern raving about some hot fire captain in the hospital emergency room taking charge, Carina knew it was hers. But when Bailey herself had come in to inform the brunette that Maya was fine and not in danger or the one hurt and to go see her once her surgery was over. But that is where she found herself. Coming into the Pediatrics ward to find her girlfriend. With a tiny blonde in her arms.
“Yes, Ellis and I went into the x-ray room and she got her arm x-rayed, now we are waiting for Link to come in and put her cast on. Bailey asked for only the best as well so that’s exactly what she got.” Maya spoke softly as she ran her fingers calmly through the girls hair.
The duo spoke amongst themselves, Carina taking a seat on the edge of the bed. If it weren’t for Ellis tracing shapes on her shirt, Maya would’ve thought the little one was asleep with how quiet she was. She probably wanted her mother. If she were in her position, she would too. Carina was about to speak when the door to the room opened, they were both expecting it to be Link but instead, it was Meredith. With a fond smile, Maya tilted her head as she looked down at Ellis “Ellis, I think if you look up now you just might see your favorite person. Your Mom’s here.”
Meredith wasn’t informed her daughter was in the hospital until after she was finished her surgery and when she had been told, she was surprised to find out that it was Maya Bishop her daughter was seemingly refusing to let go of. She was a nice enough person, but she didn’t seem too child orientated. Walking towards the duo, Meredith came to a stand before the duo, biting her lip as she took in the injury her daughter had sustained on her arm.”Hey Ellie girl.” Meredith spoke as she leaned down to press a soft kiss to her daughters head. Maya opened her arms, thinking the girl would move into her mother’s grasp, she was surprised when she just tightened her grasp on the blonde.
Maya looked up at Meredith curiously, the other one as confused as she was before she looked back down to Ellis. “Ellis, are you okay? I just thought with your mother here you’d like to go into her arms instead of mine.”
Ellis squeezed Maya’s shirt in her freehand before speaking “But you saved my life. You were the one that took me into your arms and saved me. I don’t want to let you go because what if I’m not safe?”.
Maya could tell by the sounds that left the other adults in the room that with what she had said, broke all three of their hearts. Biting her lip, Maya rubbed Ellis’s back gently before speaking “Well you want to know something? Even though I saved you today at school, your mom is your forever savior. She’s always there to hug and kiss you after you’ve had a bad day at school. And she’s the one that you want to kiss your booboos.” Maya spoke as she kissed Ellis’s head before continuing “And plus, don’t you want to tell your Mama all about the siren’s in the ambulance? I bet she wants to hear that.”
Ellis takes her head out of her chest before looking back up at the blonde of whose arms she was enclosed in before offering her a small smile “Or we can tell them about you becoming the Chief in the Emergency Room and yelling at every single doctor that came to see me who wasn’t The Chief because you had demanded only the Chief could see me.”

With a sleeping child in her arms, Meredith walked beside the other two women as they walked towards their respective cars. Maya ended up staying at the hospital until Ellis was discharged, the small child seemingly had a hold on the blonde, even though it weren’t physical anymore but it still made her upset seeing the girl hurt.
“Maya, I never did get to question the statements from earlier. My first one is what does Ellis mean by you saved her life?”. Meredith questioned softly as she rubbed her youngest child’s back softly as she slept.
“Today at school, when we got to Ellis, she was already on the ground having been hurt by some of the other kids who were trying to escape but I could see more children were about to be upon her again. So, I dropped my things to the ground and ran to Ellis and swooped her up off the ground. I was the only one of my team that would’ve made it to her in time. I’m glad I did.” she smiled fondly at the sleeping girl.
Feeling her hand being squeezed, Maya turned her attention to Carina who was walking beside her. She didn’t often get to do this with Carina, the whole walking with her girlfriend after she finished her shift, Maya loved it.
“Oh. And what did she mean about in the emergency room?”. Meredith asked softly. She’d heard many things in the hospital. Many about some feisty blonde in the emergency room telling off a whole bunch off doctors but she wasn’t able to hear it all.
“Well, we’d been wheeled into a cubicle. Ellis was in my lap on the gurney so it really was just us. And I’m guessing the resident who was doing the ER was there and they came over with a bunch of interns. So I told them no one was touching Ellis until Bailey came over...And then I put on my Captain’s voice and told them to go and get her now. With a bit of emphasis on now.” Maya couldn’t help but chuckle as it came out. Probably wasn’t the brightest of ideas then but Meredith would’ve done the same for her firefighters, giving them the best. And she has on occasion.
“Well, I thank you for saving my daughter and making sure she got the best care. I know a certain blonde firefighter will be her most favorite person in the world after today..Although she did tell me to ask you why your favorite color is blue?”. Meredith asked as she came to a stop at her car, unlocking it to put the young girl into her car seat.
With an open mouth, Maya looked towards Ellis with a fond smile on her lips. Cheeky little girl. Meredith turned back to the duo before her, waiting for a response.
“I told her blue was my favorite color too because my girlfriend looked good in blue.”she remarked, a smile forming on her face as her cheeks started to turn red.
“Are you sure it’s not red because of the color of your cheeks?”. Meredith grinned in the blonde’s direction, winking playfully. Shutting the door behind her, Meredith walked over to Maya and wrapped the smaller blonde up in a hug. “Thank you for saving my daughter Maya. Honestly. Thank you.” with a small squeeze, Meredith let go of the blonde and moved to get into the car.
“Of course Meredith, let her know if she needs anything just to let me know.” Maya smiled as she stepped back away from the car, her hand gone back to finding her girlfriends as they stood side by side watching the blonde drive away. Turning her attention towards Carina, she found the brunette grinning.
“What’re you smiling about?”. Maya asked as she wrapped her arms around Carina’s wait, pulling the brunette in.
“You mean other than you being a remarkable firefighter and person and letting that little girl hold onto you and not let you go, just so you could keep her safe?”. Carina spoke as she leaned in to kiss Maya softly before pulling away “I’m smiling at you because you told a little girl that your favorite color was blue just because I look good in it.”
Maya chuckled softly as she nodded. She certainly did tell Ellis her favorite color was blue because Carina looked good in it. Carina pressed another kiss to Maya’s lips before pulling away once more to speak.
“If we are doing the same thing then my favorite color is blue as well because it really brings out the color in your eyes and that is one of my favorite things about you.”
